so ive been trying to root my moto x for about a week now, started out on android 4.4 went through the steps to the best of my knowledge i got it downgraded and rooted on the 4.2.2 camera update and write protection unlocked, ran the adb command to check if write protection is disabled and get "0" as i should, yet something somewhere just isnt working. when i get to the last steps with the adb shell commands i get a permission denied error, ive tried everything it seems like done countless hours of research but nothing seems to work... ive even tried @640k s automatic script get to the end and get
Code:
Checking for root... drumroll, please...
!! Your device doesn't appear to be rooted !!
The SU was not found or was not installed!
Its really starting to seem like i just screwed something up beyond repair at SOME point and it isnt possible to root it now, im running moto x 1060 on verizon.
any help is appreciated. id really really really like to get my root up and running but im losing hope on it
Look in the general section for my guide how to root 4.4 but sounds like supersu needs to be installed you can do that via the market or with a flashable zip.via the recovery. After you install supersu download root checker and see if your rooted if not I'll get on the computer and post the link to my guide if you can't find it

We've heard that you can root the LG Optimus 2X with Z4Root. Is it permanent or temporary?
No supporting evidence just yet, but rooting this phone should be a piece of cake.
I used Z4root on two samples of the 2X, no issues what so ever. These were however pre-release roms, but I couldn't imagine any differences from the final release.
And yes, it's permanent. I had some app testing to do and tried Z4root just for fun and it worked like a charm.

Cool. I have already ordered one. Is the root reversible? E.g. can one root an unroot as if nothing happened?
I'm holding the 2x in my hand right now and unrooted it. (didn't try adb on it for confirmation but tried clocksync, which refused access (superuser has disappeared as well). Rerooting at the moment.
Once again this is a pre relase rom so I can't guarantee that the final ROM will have the same functionality.

Thanks. Can't wait to get my hands on one.
Good news dave. My understanding is that the main issues with the Optimus 2x so far have been regarding the massive amount of bloat apps as well as some instability in day to day operations (browser and messaging seems to crash from time to time).
Are you experiencing these? Would you be able to remove some of the bloat apps and see if it breaks anything in the LG rom?
UHOH!

I'll take a look at it, I've got an early version of the 2x which I'll try to push the new system dump to. I've rooted it and while using adb shell it looks like I've bricked it! uhoh!
Bricking a pre-production version of the best phone on the planet isn't quite what I wanted to do! I'm stuck in a boot loop and I manage to get a limited connection when booting it into the bootloader. However, probably because of pre-production status, the bootloader will let me go up and down using the volume keys, but it won't let me select any of the options!
When in the bootloader, I do have some type of recognized connection via the PC. DDMS recognizes the phone, ADB doesn't let me access it.
I'll chill on doing anything to the "good" phone for now (hope you understand)... but if I get the bricked one started, I'm back in the game .
Feel free giving me tips or trix to get it up and running.

Do you have a preproduction model like Dave or a sales sample?
On mine Z4root simply quits...after saying "Aquiring root shell" ... will try an other version, hope that will work...
Do you have a temporary root? After z4root locks? I tried with a later rom and got the same issue. However after accessing it with ADB shell it clearly has root "#" is showing and I have permissions I otherwise wouldn't have. However it seems like the root is temporary. Weird thing... I'll continue hunting for alternative solutions.
BTW, my other X2 may rest in peace. After a friend helping me out we managed to get the phone into fastboot, the kernel must have been intact, the system was completely wiped. Pushed the system through ADB and rebooted. Now we can't get it into fastboot at all... RIP ;(

Wow, sorry to hear your loss...sad story.
Anyway, I heard that it is possible to root 2.2.1 devices with Super One Click, but I can't get my Optimus 2x connected to adb, somehow Windows 7 doesn't wanna install the downloaded Google USB Drivers...
The reason Z4root doesn't work on firmwares 2.2< is that the exploit it uses to gain root rights has been fixed in those newer versions

After update OTA to version LS670ZVC, machine is unable to be rooted at this time. I am sure someone is working on it.
I returned this previously rooted phone Saturday feb 12 for replacement due to HW fault. Got new phone home and saw the phone was auto-updating to the LS670ZVC version. Which kept me from using Zroot as I did in the past. Drat! Tried many tricks found on other android forums to try and root.
The skinny of it is, if this update was applied OTA, we are SOL for now. If you updated using LG software via computer, you can root it still. If you haven't updated from version 9, don't do it until an exploit is released.
I have another thread going on this same issue. I have tried using superoneclick. Even though everything looked ok it didn't make a difference. Did a root checker it said busybox was ok and I know that SU is ok. Just looks like they "fixed" the exploit for now...

Mmmm, sad about the old one, however I got my second device so I'll unroot my it and then try the SuperOneClick option.. I'll let you know. Once again this is a sample but the rom is dated from 2010-12-14 so it must be quite close to production ROMs.

So from the beginning I updated from notification on phone from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2. Then bricked after trying to gain root acess. Finally able to flash jb 98.72.22. Tried for days to find a root that worked. Couldn't get motochopper to gain root. Tried god knows how many others. Finally got virtual box, imported Root_Bionic_JB.ova and still wouldn't work. Keep coming across su binary issues. The closest i got was with the virtual box installing superuser. But when I trying to update the binary says unable and to send a log report. What am i doing wrong? is it a step im missing when unzipping to desktop? everything goes smooth until cmd gets to rooting, then says failed. cleaning. press enter to reboot and close. Im about to lose my mind! Please some assistance. I sick of failing every attempt from every suggest forum (quietly sobbing )
You need to go back to what has been proven to work. Moto chopper 2. Not to be insulting BUT I know from experience, just BC you can't get something to work the first couple of times you try it doesn't mean it does not work. Period. Now, where did you get hung up on the Ubuntu exploit? List all that you did.

Well, not to be insulting, but it was my understanding that moto chopper would only work if temp rooted or had gained root acess previously? I may be wrong. Anyways, the prob. with unbuntu is thing i guess froze (but still ran) after patiently running it like six hours. Last screen at was installing-reinstalling previous "somethings" but I figured need a system clean and would try again. gotta be easier way. so here is my linux minimal screenshot attempt. running root bionic jb ovf file. noticed where it starting going wrong is
chmod: pwn: operation not permitted.

phone may appear to.......
/system/bin/sh: /storage/rfs0/pwn: not found <-------Right here i noticed the file path on the phone and it's ---> storage/rfs1 Would that have something to do w/ it?
nothing ever vibrates and reboots in flash. got bad flash or something?
MotoChopper works on non TI (OMAP) CPus that are in Motoroal devices.
Coincidentally, it also works on ASUS Tranformer Infinity (and the Prime as well, IIRC).
It does not work on the BIONIC.
The method that works on rooting the JB build on the BIONIC is one that is based upon the older RAZR method - see http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/16518-root-motoshare-2-old-bug-new-exploit/

Ok so using virtual box the ova Root_Bionic_JB_20130501-4 the fourth ubdate of the orginal release. Now i suggest erasing all superuser apps installed your self and anything to do with them. When it's done right, it will appear on it's own and work flawlessly. No uncertianties about it. Then i've posted a screen shot of the commands with notes to help understand easiest. The instant the command to press hardware key or power/or each volume itself is the instant you want to press it. Now the reboot is instantious kinda itself and gotta be noticing phone unless have ungodly long boot up let me know if the screen shot helped what you were asking.
i have previously unlocked bootloader and rooted my device using the Hasoons all in one tool kit and then had been using ard 12.1.
I then fancied trying the latest GE 4.3 release (stock) which i downloaded and flashed and all seemed fine however when i went to check root was still there i have the icon but get a message saying that there is no su binary installed. I have tried to use the toolkit again to go back the root procedure in the hope i can re-install what ever is missing however for some reason now the tool kit comes up with an error message in the box saying waiting for device or device not recognized.
I have tried to sort the problem but now feel i am just going round and around in circles and really dont have the knowledge to put it right as im quite new to the flashing and modding side and dont fully understand all the terminology, im sure its probably something really simple to fix for those who know how so would really appreciate some advice.
My overall aim would be to be running the stock rom (or might even try the new arhd 4.3 ge) with root so that i can then use the volume + to wake mod as i find this really usefull as my power button is quite depressed and hard to use.

hello you are in need of the new 4.3 superuser.zip
http://download.clockworkmod.com/test/superuser-4.3-beta3.zip
if you are using CWM, when it asks to fix su upon reboot, select NO
Wow thank you!!!!!
You have no clue, or maybe you do, how lost I got trying to root my HTC One. This is all new to me, but this forum has helped massively. I found that the supersu zip I had was the older version when I already had 4.3 uploaded before rooting. This community rocks!
why do my gapps processes keep crashing?
NM forgot to full wipe
So I have the same issue - my only question is that I am running 4.4 now. Does this super user file still work or is there a 4.4 version?
Just use "SuperSu" if you face any root acces issues

Hi there, Im new to the rooting world, I have a htc one m7 from sprint trying to sim unlock it, as far as I know I unlocked the bootloader, tampered it, and rooted, but no access to super user so I can sim unlock it. I downloaded and installed this App that you mention, but still keeps saying no binary updated, and with this 4.3 version says there was an error installing superuser. Please help, I dont know what to do.
I was having this same issue on my Note 2 (4.3). I seem to have found a way to restore root that may help you as well.
I think this issue may be caused by the SU app & binary updates. Uninstalling the updates has restored root for me.
Go to:
Settings > More > Application Manager > All > SuperSU > Uninstall updates
(menu options may be slightly different on other devices)
This will roll back SuperSU and hopefully restore your root access.
Let me know if this helps.
Any updates on this? I'm trying to get root on an HTC One M7 that I just purchased and I'm running into the same error.
Thanks!
UPDATE:
So I'm trying the reddit instructions again, and I'm making more progress than before. Here's where I'm at now: Everything works flawlessly until I get to step 19. I get a message saying "can't create /sys/kernel/uevent_helper: Permission denied" and my phone never reboots. I've browsed through the comments there and everyone else who gets hung up there just repeats previous steps and has it work (which I've tried) or can't remember how they got it to work. I thought I'd reach out here and see if anyone has any suggestions now.

Hey everyone, I've been desperately trying to root my Moto X and I just can't get it to work. I ordered mine about a week ago and I've spent the last two days tinkering away with no success. I've rooted my Droid X and my Droid Razr Maxx in the past, so I would say I have a moderate level of understanding, but I'm stumped by this one.
I tried going the easy route using the Moto X Root Script but it continuously failed for me. I would have posted there, but unfortunately since I'm not the most active user, I haven't even made it to the 10 posts mark so I'm not allowed to... so then I took to the internet and used these instructions I found on Reddit to run through RockMyMoto manually followed by MotoWpNoMoto. I successfully achieved root on 4.2.2 and then accepted the OTA to move to KitKat. However, my phone went into a boot loop and I couldn't get it to respond to anything, so I flashed back to 4.2.2 to try running through the process again. Now, I can't get it to root on 4.2.2 anymore, and I'm not sure what's going wrong.
MotoWpNoMoto does tell me that write protection is already removed, but I'm still not getting anywhere. After flashing back to a clean 4.2.2, I try running the first part of SlapMyMoto, and it says it's all successful, but then when I accept the OTA and try to proceed to the second part of it where you push install.sh, I get an error saying "Install script failed! You received a Permission Denied error while attempting to load the install script into the UEVENT_HELPER. This means that root was not successfully obtained." If I try downloading SuperSU from the marketplace, it tells me no SU binary is installed and the SuperSU can't install it.
Does anyone have any ideas on where to go from here?

I rooted my phone a week ago, I kept with the stock Rom for a few days, then installed a Renovate sense 6 Rom which seemed to work well. I had SuperSU installed, plus a few other apps, but then all of a sudden I got an error message when trying to open SuperSU saying the binary was missing, so I downloaded a root checker which said I wasn't fully rooted! After looking on the forums to find a solution I relocked my boot loader and unrooted the phone. Trying to find a stock RUU for my phone ( unlocked Europe version ) was a bloody nightmare. Also getting it to install on my phone was a pain, but probably more to do with my computer having a slow moment.
Is it really worth all the hassle when I can all go wrong in a couple of days ?

the phone never come unrooted .. you never had root installed properly
when it's flashed correctly from recovery it will not just go away
http://download.chainfire.eu/396/SuperSU
Flash that from recovery and you'll be rooted
I had SuperSU installed, everything was fine, anything I did with the phone worked. After a week it said the SU binaries were missing, and you couldn't get into SuperSU to do anything, but previously you could. If the phone was never rooted correctly like you say, i would have had this problem from the start.
Also after rooting I used a root checker which said I was rooted, but after this Su binary issue started, it said I wasn't rooted.
Still, I'm back to unrooted now, and the only reason I did it was to get Sense 6, which has since come out as an update, so I'm no worse off

This is a rom issue not a root issue. Could have also been an issue with the kernel. To be honest if you dont really use the root functions then there maybe no need for you to have it. To be honest most people dont really need root. They just wanna seem cool with some things they can show off on their device instead of using it for anything important or handy. I would advice to judge for yourself. Take the extra options/security risk and weigh it against remaining stock which has less options/secure.
I agree with the previous post, if you don't know what it is, you probably don't need it. As far as SuperSu disappearing, it sounds like either you didn't install it correctly or something changed. The ideal way to install SuperSu is to install via the recovery. And even so, if you reinstall your OS, you will need to reinstall SuperSu. Software does not simply disappear, something had to be done to hasten it's departure. An easy fix to your issue would have been to download the SuperSu zip package from http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu, and install it via your recovery. What I personally don't like about locking a bootloader is that now it says TAMPERED at the top of the screen.
Your issues seem to be with the restoring to stock process which HTC do make a bit convoluted, triggered by the root error not rooting itself.
Now to answer your question: My main reason for rooting is I want to take fine grained backups. Second is lots of clever people have come up with mods and improvements I like to install over the stock Sense ROM.
If you don't need anything that needs root, no need to root. Simple as that.
