[Q] Alternative to Kindle app? - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My wife just got a Lumia 920 last week, and she mostly loves it. (She's coming from iOS, so her expectations are pretty high.) She's impressed with the GPS, with the Nokia streaming music service, with how responsive most of the interface is... but she hates the Kindle app.
It gets terrible reviews on the Store. It crashes, loses sync with the server, content just disappears... it's unusable. Is there any alternative here? She's not too big on the official Facebook app either, but at least in that case she can use the web version.

Well, there's plenty of e-reader apps if that's all she needs. Fiction Book Reader is my preferred one (reads both epub and mobi/prc, is quick and very good at remembering location, etc.) but I don't have any other devices I'm trying to keep it synched with. Odd about the troubles with the Kindle app, though; I used it all the time on my WP7 device (sideloading the books, since I'm not a fan of the store's DRM, but this required file system access) and had no significant troubles.

[Q] OverDrive App for Android?

I want to "borrow" ePub books from the local library, but I really don't like the idea of installing dedicated DRM software on a PC and managing a local "library" of ebooks and THEN doing file transfers every time I want to load a title on the Nook.
It does seem as if an OverDrive app for Android was released
http://overdriveblogs.com/library/2...ps-for-iphone-and-android-now-support-ebooks/
"Now your customers will be able to download both EPUB eBooks and MP3 audiobooks directly to their iPhone, iPod touch, or Android phone/tablet. New users can search for “OverDrive Media Console” in the Apple App Store and Android Market, while current users will be alerted to update the existing OverDrive app on their devices."
Is this working for anyone on the NC? Does it avoid entirely the need for PC involvement, and let you download library books directly to the Nook?
Any downsides, fallout from the DRM, or other issues to consider?
yes, it works! Obviously, you must be rooted. If you stay on the stock rom, it worked best for me if I kept the stock browser as "default", otherwise when you attempted to download a book, a different browser like dolphin would get confused and just display gibberish.
Overdrive works great on my nook. I use it all the time. It totallly eliminates the need for anything on your PC. The only thing I have seen is that it can be easier to search on the PC, though when I do that I just check out the books and download them on my nook.
Oh I issue you may have is that you will need to disable the time settings from provider. If you do not you will not be able to turn on the adobe dem feature. Enjoy, feel free to PM me if run into problems.

The point of the NookColor/tablets in general?

I absolutely love the NookColor. Its got a great design and does way more than it was intended to, thanks to the android community and developers and ofcourse even Barnes&Noble for their official Froyo release.
However, I have had it for a couple of months now. Messed around heaps, tried all the roms and the novelty is running out and I just dont know what to use it for anymore. I never actually used it much apart from for trying out new roms.
The gadgets I find myself using most on a daily basis:
- For calling and texting, I use my HTC Buzz/Wildfire.
- Due to Android's poor music capabilities and the size of the NookColor, I still use my iPod touch for on the go music.
- And I still find myself using my laptop for internet and doing university work.
This is not meant to be a complain-session but I was just wondering what you guys find yourself using your NookColor/tablets mostly for? What makes you go back to using it on a daily basis?
Just trying to find some uses for rejuvenating my interest and actually using the NookColor more on a daily basis.
Do we really need to fill the "gap between the smartphones and laptops"? Does a gap even exist?
Reading a book, watching videos are the soul reason.
Yeah, a lot easier to carry CFD/fluid mechanics/thermodynamics books in pdf format than physical format Also, it's nice for hulu and messing w/android, but I know what you mean. Out of college idk what I'd use it for. Just something around the house to look up something real quick, or to play pewpew2
im a gradstudent and working professional. they both come in handy when you can do textbooks or reference books with the e-reader apps. also, i love my laptops but when im in bed... its a lot easier to use the tablet for web surfing and email than having a really hot laptop to carry.
my gf likes it to play sudoko on a larger screen than a cell phone.
I have 2 of them, one is more or less permanently in my bathroom including charger. It has replaced all the stacks of magazines that used to clutter the place up.
-Portable real internet (BBC News, Hulu, ESPN3, etc.)
-Games (especially emulators controlled with Wiimote)
-Google Maps with Bluetooth GPS
-Creating Word documents
-I use a calculator on it a lot
-Calendar and scheduling
-Facebook and networking
-Getting Amazon's free app a day

Portable real internet indeed - handy for recipes!!
NPR news app (much easier to read).
I tend to use my phone for music, but the NC is better with Winamp (my ipod touch is in the hands of my kid now).
Youtube videos for gaming (been using for Lost Odyssey on the 360 to find treasure I missed)
Gamefaqs
checking email
Facebook once in a while
A lot of this I can't stand to do on a phone...but works great on the NC.
Making router / firewall /etc changes or grabbing the network password when someone needs it - DD-WRT router - handy and saves booting up a computer to do it.
Bank application / paypal app to check balances.
I would say #1 would be ebooks - but I read mostly on my e-ink Nook.
Killing time on the couch while the kids are watching Dora or whatever.
The Nook Color is my prefered way to surf the web. I love that I can sit back on the couch and hold it like a book while surfing.
I also read books, watch movies and play games on it. The last few meetings I've had I've used it to take a few notes.
Since getting the Nook Color I've hardly touched my netbook, and since getting the netbook I've hardly touched my laptop. My desktop is a whole different animal, however.
I honastly see no benifit of using the ipod music player over the android one. Coverflow looks nice but takes forever to get anywhere. I suppose the music u might lik erl is nice but I never touched it

For me, I use it probably 70% of the time to read books. My state library (NH) has an e-book program. I have 2 weeks with each book before it self-deletes, so this kind of forces me a little to use it more as an e-reader.
However, I like having it to surf the web quickly. It's also a great planner and to-do list manager (I use the Get Things Done method with Evernote). so I find it really useful for quickly jotting down notes and tasks.
the rest of my time is used watching tv shows that I always said I wanted to watch but never had the motivation to go find them (Breaking Bad and Sunny in Philadelphia being the two I'm watching now).
Could I do this all on a laptop? probably, but I find this size tablet to be much more ergonomically friendly for when I want to use electronic media (bed... at the breakfast table... on a plane).
There's no shame in not finding a use between phone and laptop for another device. If the nook or tablets aren't for you... don't worry about it. the good thing is you can probably sell your nook for about what you bought it for. experiment over.
I got to read the news and magazines. I watch alot of movies on it. Use it every day while my wife jogs.

I wan to keep on topic but this is a noob question. Those that are using google maps with Bluetooth GPS. What is the GPS for? Meaning are you actually using it in your car kind of like a Garmin? I'm assuming google maps can be used without the GPS part to simply scroll around the maps.
Also is there any way to use a Bluetooth headset to make Skype calls?

Do you find selecting text to be difficult? About 90% of the time I can't get that little slider to slide.

Yep. It is fun to have such a large GPS in the car.
I use mine mostly for:
1) Browsing ...
2) Email / FacebookMail
3) Gaming (but am a bit frustrated with the lack of scaling in a lot of games)
4) Getting a license to each daily Amazon free app (I could use my phone, but don't, since I don't mind cluttering up my Nook) ... never know when I might go back and actually use one of them.
I find it most useful in the car/airplane but also just as a capable carry-along device with decent screen.
I have a Samsung Captivate (which I do use more for music) ... but when able I definitely use my Nook over it for things like browsing and email. I also have a very nice ultra-portable Win7 notebook (HP 2710p) ... which when my Nook is charged I basically never use unless I need to do something over my work's VPN.
The more I use my Nook, well, the more I use my Nook. I use it enough I'm just about convinced to plunk down more $ for a "real" tablet (camera, WiFi, GPS) later this year when the 3rd gen tablets start hitting the market.
The only thing I wish for is something like the iPad case with built-in keyboard, as I would like better typing.
When home, like I am now, I still use my desktop PC almost all the time and don't see it changing. But otherwise I'm surprisingly happy to pull out my Nook.
PS. One thing that got me using the Nook MUCH MUCH more was this case (I modded mine with a leather punch to open up holes behind the speaker ... if you do this just do a circlular pattern in the center as you'll start hitting magnet/metal out to the far left/right of the speaker area). It works great in easel mode both for in-lap use as well as a VERY convenient way to rest it over my hands when holding it up.
i got it because i wanted an e-reader...the fact that it's also a tablet is just an extra perk...that being said, the only thing i really use it for in that capacity is e-mail and light web surfing...but i think it will come in especially handy when traveling and i won't have to pack several books or laptop just for i-net access
75% reading books
10% news+email
5% few games
5% youtube+IMDB movie trailers
5% other tasks
I don't have an Android phone (still working on my previous generation of 'feature phone'), mostly because I can't use one during most of the waking hours.
So the nook suffices as an android surrogate. What's it do? Probably every thing you do on a phone, but on a bigger screen and only in the confines of my wifi bubble at home.
Because I dual boot between an android OS and the nook stock experience, I spend about 50/50 in each. When I'm in nook mode, it's to read. When I'm in AndroidOS mode, it's to get real time information (weather, news, calendar/agenda, etc).

[Q] Can you help? - Apps for using nook with limited Wi-Fi

CM7/nook offers fantastic flexibility and power, but it is disappointing that it loses so much of its capability when there is no wi-fi available.
There must be others in the same boat. What good apps or work-arounds have you found for maintaining functionality away from wi-fi?
So far "Angry Birds" is the only app I use sans wi-fi.
Back in the day of phone modems, software would often allow you to download information for later review so the phone would not have to be tied up (yeah, I'm that old).
For example, it would be nice if there was a way to cache articles from favorite journals in "Pulse" into memory. Right now, Pulse only collects enough info to tease if you don't have a connection!
Thanks in advance for the help!
Read It Later has offline reading.
I put books on it
I load articles in GReader for offline reading of blogs. Doggcatcher for viewing Podcasts.
And I have tons of books and mags on my sd, but I guess that's not what you wanted to read
Laters is great for my Read it later List.
And - just like you - I enjoy playing Angry Birds Rio quite a bit.

What do you use yout tablet for?

Was interested in seeing what everyone does with their tablets as i feel im not using my to full potential.
I mainly use mine for searching net, reading websites, watching Youtube, check emails and twitter reading a paper or mag and maybe the odd game.
Thats about it for the most part.
what else can it be used for?
i use mine for:
- taking notes (asus super note)
- capturing my ideas (adobe collage)
- reading books (ezpdf reader, polaris office)
- learning french (about 13 different dictionaries and conjugation apps)
- searching and surfing the web (firefox, opera mini)
- checking forums (xda premium hd, tapatalk hd)
- reading Quran (Quran android)
- messaging
- email
- maps (i travel a lot these days)
- camera (don't judge me )
- watching movies and tv shows (mx video player)
- music (play music)
- games (cut the rope, angry birds, fruit ninja thd)
and just for the sake of using it to full potential i sometimes hit my sister with it or use it as a japanese hard pillow.
Is Asus Supernote the same as The Supernote that's already on the Tablet?
If not can you link me to it please.
Thanks
Pretty much everything! Moved from iPad to this and because of the extra openness I rarely use my Mac or PC when I'm not working now... Some things I use it for:
Portfolio - Displays my graphic design work
Perfect photo viewer
Kindle (Best e-Reader, you can give it it's own brightness etc.)
Social hub (Seriously, Samsung Social Hub is one of the best social network aggregators I've seen, works especially well in portrait)
Skype (Seriously try this, the future is here guys, Star Trek ain't got nothing on Android!!)
Magazines (Zinio lets you subscribe to magazines, save the paper etc.)
It has replaced my newspapers (I'm all digital now, I just read the news sites/apps)
Gaming (Makes a great little games console, never going to live up to an Xbox or PlayStation but it certainly gives portable stuff like PSP and DS a run for its money with the big screen and very affordable games!)
Games console emulators
Evernote
"Cracked!" Reader app (very magazine-ish in portrait mode)
Comic books
Radio & podcasts (Great broadband radio apps, good speakers, win!)
Route planning on Google Maps
TV/Movies when away from home (As long as there's wi-fi, Netflix works great, if not, I stock it up with some films)
Development (I am an iOS and Android developer)
Things I DON'T use it for:
Writing on this forum - the browser seems to have a tendency to just stop working if I try to send a relatively long post on this forum and some others, not sure if its my network, the browsers or the device.
Music - My iPhone does the music bit, and 16GB with no SD slot is pushing it a little with music.
Instant messaging - Mobile OS multitasking isn't ready for IM, it really needs to be something you keep present on the screen no matter what you're doing the way you can on a Mac or a Windows computer with a good sized screen. I'd use it for IM if Samsung had made a TouchWiz overlay IM program like they have with their calculator, calendar etc., but switching to and from IM+ just isn't versatile enough.
isnt adobe collage like 15$?
An interesting post as I think the tablet form factor is not being used to its full potential.
For me surfing and reading the two biggest uses as with everyone else.
Other uses for me:
- Home media player with HDTV connector. MK video player plays more formats than Xbox or PS3 and easier to connect than laptop. I use ES explorer to connect and stream to NAS.
- Microsoft Instant Messenger (try Office talk). Great when not in front of work laptop. Can use any IM really and saves you firing up computer.
- Have tried VNC and Teamviewer. Need to setup static IP but useful if in other room. Contemplating whether to leave work laptop on all day and just vnc.
- Highly recommend installing Overskreen Browser. Useful browser which acts as a separate window on top of what you are doing. Combine this with a web app and you have a second reference window. For example, check address while on Google maps.
- I have Documents to Go so can open all Microsoft word, excel, PowerPoint via Dropbox account. Still won't replace working on desktop as not all features are enabled, like pivot tables in excel or transitions in PowerPoint. This is still for reference and look up.
I've tried note taking but quicker to write out notes. For this size, an active digitizer would be the killer app.
Interested in what other people do as well.

- Browsing mainly and reading news via Pulse. And Facebooking and IM'ing a lot.
- Sending links to my PC via 2SendTab when needed (music or videos from Youtube or stuff I need to look at the next morning)
- Remoting into my PC via PhoneMyPC (the best remote app out there) and doing pretty much everything from my bed. LOL.
When I'm not programming at home, I'm pretty much on the tablet all the time and my PC turns into my home cinema and that's it. I would gladly stop using it alltogether as long as Photoshop and other productivity tools were available on Android (which I hope soon).
i don't think you're supposed to have a supernote *already* on the tablet unless you have a transformer prime.
check this post, it's really useful:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204931
and no. adobe touch apps are all less than 10 bucks.
i don't mind other apps. just adobe collage gave me the feeling that i would enjoy using it.
also adobe photoshop touch was good. but it's nothing compared to the pc version and i wouldn't use my tab for photo editing.
I keep noticing people referring to Tapatalk HD on this forum, but I can never find an HD version, just a nasty stretched out mobile app. I used to use the HD version on iPad so I'd love to have it on my tab... Where are you guys getting it??

using it as a car front end looks really awesome if you have 3g/4g
-General web/social uses
-Making small changes to websites I manage (Droid Edit Pro)
-Reading (kindle or ez pdf reader)
-Gaming (Android games and n64oid)
-Blogging (write in google docs then post from pc...blogger's app is terrible and the website is bad on mobile devices)
-Music (Google Music)
-GoogleTV remote
-Google+ Hangouts
-Netflix while laying in bed.
I use mine for the following:
- Ordering takeout (especially dominos making your own pie is great)
- Making online purchases like Ebay & Amazon. (Paypal is great)
- Reading (Magazines, XDA, Manga, Pulse)
- Watching videos (streaming media, anime, youtube)
- Location services (maps, train maps & timetables)
- Gaming
There is an increasing number of tablet friendly(customized) apps that make things very easy. I am sure i use it for more but can't think of them all.

I use my tab for a variety of purposes, most of which are mentioned in others' posts. Mainly it's a great tool for consuming the information & entertainment on the Internet. Although some strides are being made in productivity (e.g. Adobe touch apps), tablets still come nowhere close to the capability of a desktop for work.

[Q] Purchase nook hd outside US

Hi everyone. I am planning to buy a noble Hd but I live in Europe and I have a couple of questions.
Will I be able to fully use it or will i loose any features? I plan to istall cyanogenmod. I mainly need it to read so will i be able to insert ebooks and read them?
The most important is that need to read from the web.does the crome browser support article view?
Does it worth to buy it or not?will i have access to all android apps?
Thank you in advance!
If you install Cyanogenmod you will lose the Nook app store, which isn't a great loss. You will still be able to buy/read Nook books if you install the Nook app, but you will need to either find the apk or install the 1mobile app store, as the Play store will say the app is incompatible if you're running Cyanogenmod. CM11 (Android 4.4) will give you vastly better performance than the stock ROM, though, which is a heavily customized and somewhat locked down Android 4.1. As long as you install a gapps package you will have Play store access on CM. Play store and various Google apps are built into the latest stock ROMs, so either way you can have Play store access. If your books are DRM-free there are many choices for epub readers. I prefer Overdrive Media Console, Readmill and Play Books (note that while Overdrive and Readmill can load locally stored epubs, Play Books requires you to first upload the book you want to read to the Play Books site and then re-download the book through the app). Those are just my personal favorites, though; there are a ton of epub readers out there. Fabrik is also another outstanding epub reader, but I don't use it because it's very slow to load. If you are using the mobi format you can use the Amazon Kindle app. I can't tell you much of anything regarding the capabilities of the Chrome browser, as I prefer Opera or UC Browser, nor can I vouch for article view, as I'm not sure what that is supposed to mean exactly. You might investigate the Readability app if Chrome doesn't do it for you, but the capabilities are the same as any other Android phone or tablet, so if you have an Android phone you can test out Chrome in advance, before you buy the tablet.

Thank you for the immediate and full of content response. I am about to buy the Noble, I just have to check for the article view. It is actually a mode on mobile browsers witch remove all unnecessary content in order to read articles, opinions , actually anything written in the web.
Ah, well, that sounds pretty much like what Readability does. Like I said, I don't know if Chrome does that or not, but if it doesn't you should be able to share the page to Readability and then it'll do it.
Barnes and Noble in the US only ships within the US. You'd need to use a reshipping company to received the nook in the US and forward it to you. shipito.com will do this for about €35. Alternatively B&N's UK store currently has all Nook accessories for £5 (http://www.nook.com/gb/store/accessories). Again, if you're not in the UK you'll have to get it reshipped.
The latest Nook firmware doesn't have the Nook Browser, and it was this that had ArticleView. Anyway when you install CyanogenMod all the Nook apps will be removed, but you'll be able to install almost any Android app. As such you may want to ask the visually impaired community if there is an Android browser that fits the bill.
