Micro SD card suddenly unreadable - Galaxy S 4 Active Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have scoured the other forums, but I wanted to post a thread with my exact symptoms. Last night, my phone just stopped recognizing my micro sd card, which unfortunately contained some important data. I tried the card in other devices and it is not recognized in them either. It's as if the card is not even there. At this point, I could probably contact samsung or sandisk and get a replacement card, but more importantly is extracting the data. Is there a program or method I can use to capture the data from the card even if it's not being recognized. I don't have access to sd card reader, but I could pick one up if necessary. Currently, plugging the phone into a computer does not show the card as existing at all, much less reading any data. Any advice is appreciated.

There are a lot of programs out there that you could use to attempt recovery of the files. I was able to recover a lot of data on a friend's micro sd card a few years ago. There is a pretty good article here http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/storage/3481659/how-get-files-off-corrupt-sd-card/
Best of luck to you.

I had the exact same thing happen about a month ago. The card said 'ejected, safe to remove' or something along those lines at some random time. I took the card out and neither of my 3 computers would read the card. It didn't error, it just did NOTHING, like it didn't exist. The only thing I cared about were the pics so I tried 3 different adapters, still didn't work. I ended up cleaning the contacts with alcohol (TINY bit on a q-tip) and put the adapter in the reader, THEN the micro SD card. After about a dozen times inserting/removing it finally read the stupid card. I pulled the pics and did a full reformat in windows (unchecked quick format) scanned it for bad blocks and formatted again after putting it back in the phone. I set google to autobackup my pics to G+ now. It hasn't done it since but I definitely won't trust my SD card with anything I can't easily replace or isn't constantly backed up.

Try Flickr for backup online, you have 1 Terra-byte space there. @ Google+ it's 1G
http://www.flickr.com/
(for uploading there are several options, i use the one below, but other work fine to i think.)

Have fun

I don't think the sdcard socket works very well on these phones. My sdcard stayed to act up, and when I opened up the phone, I found it unplugged. I know it was firmly seated when I installed it. Days could easily get corrupted if the card has a flaky connection.

I just had this same issue happen to me a few weeks back. My mico SD inexplicably unmounted from my phone, tried to plug it into my computer using my SD adapter and it acted as if nothing at all was plugged in. I did a google search and found some recommended programs to try and retrieve data from corrupted SD cards, but nothing worked since the computer wouldn't even recognize anything was plugged in. I tried plugging it into my netbook, my Mac computer at work, one of those photo lab machines at Target--nothing would recognize there was a card plugged in. I was distraught because I hadn't thought to backup my photos in months, and I did not want to lose them.
However in my searching for a solution, I saw many people mention Recoverfab (recoverfab.com), a professional in Germany who has a good success rate at recovering data from these SD cards that won't mount. I was sold the minute I saw that if he is not able to recover your data, there is no charge. I contacted him and filled out the order form. Shipping from the midwest, my card got to him in little over a week and he had my photos recovered the very next day. Depending on the size of the card it can get a little pricey, but for me it was well worth getting all my pictures back. I'm going to be sure to set my google+ account to backup my pictures going forward now, but if I ever had something like this happen again I would use Recoverfab again without hesitation.
I hope this helps, and good luck on retrieving your data!

Thanks for sharing the manual ways and providing information about other product. Moreover, I need to suggest Remo Recover tool that is capable enough to restore data from unreadable Micro SD card.

I hope you have managed to recover your data as I can understand your situation as I was scratching my head a few days ago in a similar situation. After doing a lot of googling, I was able to recover the SD card with the entire data and am using the same micro sd card without formatting.
My card was not showing at all on any of my laptops and on the phone it stated blank SD card.
Step 1
You can attempt to fix it using the desktop windows' built-in chkdsk utility.
Open up command prompt (start->run->cmd.exe) and type
chkdsk /X /F
My SD card reader is F:\ drive, so i used the following command:
chkdsk /X /F F:
Either it may ask you to repair and you may follow the instructions or it may say chkdsk is not available for raw files (this is the message I got not to worry as the sd card at least shows up)
Step 2
Download the Windows version of TestDisk.http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
(free software)
Unzip the downloaded file to your C: drive and open C:\testdisk-7.0-WIP > right click " testdisk_win.exe" and select run as administrator (the program doesn't have to be installed).
This may take time, even hours depending on the size of your SD card, so be patient.
A. At the first window select “No Log” and press Enter.
B. Select what drive to analyse, choose “Proceed” and press Enter.
C. Select partition type – option 2 - EFI GPT and press Enter
D. Confirm at "Analyse" with Enter to proceed. The drive/partition will be analysed.
E. Confirm at "Quick Search" with Enter to proceed.
F. TestDisk should say “Structure OK”. Choose the drive/partition to fix. (OPTIONAL: Press*p*to list your files - here you can copy your files to the pc; Files listed in red are deleted entries. Go back to the previous display)
G. Press enter to proceed.
H. Select “Write” and press Enter
I. Press “Y”.
J. Press and close TestDisk. Reboot the computer.
Hope this helps and do let me know

SD card unusable
Hi
New user here
I have a 32 Gb micro SD (SP Elite) that has suddenly become unusable. It has no data on it that I can't afford to lose.
I use it in my Galaxy Tab S tablet as a place to store ebooks, music, movies etc when I travel so all can be replaced easily.
I believe the problem started when I had the tablet plugged into my PC and I deleted some files from the SD at that time. Ever since then the card is unusable. The tablet doesn't see it any more with its own file manager but if I install it into a USB-micro SD holder and then to my computer I can at least see it but I'm told I need to "format this card before using".
A "quick" format fails immediately and a long format runs till the green bar gets to 100%, long pause, more flickering lights on SD holder then fails.
I`ve tried the CHKDSK but that says unavailable for RAW drives.
Tried several free recovery programs but most just want to help recover files.
My best hope seemed to be the TestDisk program and I`ve trying various things but I`m out of my depth with many of the options.
On my first run through it found no partitions so I tried setting one up starting from 1 and ending at the number it suggested. I then went back to the PC and tried a long format that went all the way to the end before failing (see above).
Second attempt:
I start TestDisk, select No Log, identified the SD card, selected partition type INTEL/PC, ANALYSE.
Now I have some result ...
Invalid FAT boot sector
1P FAT32 LBA 0 130 3 3852 227 23 61888512
1P FAT32 LBA 0 130 3 3852 227 23 61888512
No partition is bootable
I suspect I might just have to create a boot sector but I'll hold off in the hope that someone will offer some help.
I could easily replace this card as it's not that expensive but it seems they fail fairly frequently so I'd like to learn how to recover one if possible.
Thanks

SD card problem resolved
Problem turned out to be with a USB hub I was using. Just for "fun" I tried the SD in a USB port at the rear of my desktop and it formatted!!!!
Files copied with no problem and are recoverable/readable.

I am trying this method on my daughter's SD card that stopped working today. It won't even show up in her phone, my phone, or my PC. I have gotten to step F, but mine comes back saying "The following partition can't be recovered" and it listed one partition. What can I do from here?

How many partitions did it list. If it listed more than one then try the other one. At point F you could try typing P and list the files and check if these are the correct files if yes you have an option to copy them to computer as well.

I got this error, can anyone tell me if I can go anywhere from here?
Analyze cylinder 8/1992 : 00%
Read error at 7/230/32 (lba = 126976)

I have a similar issue... My S3 stopped reading my sd card last night and I've been scouring the internet ever since trying to find a solution. At the moment, None of my devices can read it.
If I plug it into my computer, right clicking the card freezes explorer and I have to pull it out otherwise it crashes explorer after a while.
Opening the testdisk program would leave it scanning indefinitely. (Please wait.........)
edit:I'll try leaving it in my computer for a few days. Because I tried overnight. T_T
Formatting doesn't seem like an option because I can't interact with it in any way from my computer
I've tried Testdisk and Zar but to no avail.

You may try to take out memory card and then connect micro SD card to computer with a card reader, you can then try this sd card data recovery solution.
The sd card data recovery solution helped me before. hope that it helps you also.

Where do we go now?

@Albergman - What happened to your higher calling of finding a fix for the problem?? You bowed out with formatting the card. As I read your post, I was hoping that you would be a god-send since your problem seemed identical to what I am having now. Main difference however, I want to save my data - so unlike you, formatting is not an option for me(not the first one at least). I have tons of games progress data and car maintenance data (very precious) that would hurt me to see lost (looking for suggestions for back up options for these app related data).
So far, I have tried zar and recovered pics and videos (which are already backed up automatically). Ran the TestDisk for detecting partition but took a long time (64GB card) and the PC restarted to install Windows updates http://cdn3.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/mad.gif . Will try that again, maybe later.
So now trying out the partition recovery on zar. It has detected the file system (fat32) but the offset is 0kb, which is concerning. But I will let it complete the process and remain hopeful.
Hope to get this resolved with the help from the community.
Update:
The Zar partition recovery mode seems stalled at 99%. Will have to use the task manager to kill it.

Error with Zar
Repeated the attempt to recover partition with Zar but got an error - Unable to continue: Unsupported filesystem (see screenshot). Can anyone suggest anything that I can go other than format?

SD card is unformattable and yields "invalid media or track 0 bad "
So i posted a thread a few hours ago and a user directed me to this thread. I am going to try this tomorrow on my friends SD card when he gets into work but do you think this will work with the problem i'm having? as a refresher, whenever he inserts his SD card into his computer it says it must be formatted, which then goes on to fail(just like all of you in this thread) when he inserts it into his GS4 active or my GS4 it says "mount" but never mounts. I've tried programs and cmd ideas but nothing worked as well. I've attached my thread for reference but i will check in tomorrow and update how this method went. Fingers crossed

I just had the same problem. The card was detected but wouldn't read in my GN4 and wasn't recognized in the reader on the desktop. Swabbed it with a little alcohol and was able to view on the computer but not the phone. Backing it up as I type to reformat and restore a few files to see what happens.
Thanks for the tip! :good:

Storage card pretents to be empty when it is not?

I am running Duttys March 4 Dual Touch, No Cube on my Kaiser. Probably unrelated, but yesterday every thing on my 6GB Sandisk Storage Card disappeared
About 750mb of data! The card appears empty in File Manager until I select "Show all files" when a single folder called WMDRM containing a single 132kb file shows up.
If I go to Settings> System> Memory The storage card shows 738mb used and 5084mb free. So it appears the data is there but inaccessible. If I browse the card from activeSync the same is also the case. Properties tell be 738mb used, but nothing is visibel except the single small file.
Any ideas on how I might be able to get it back? Really want to get my data back....

You may have scrambled your files.
Put it into a USB card reader and try to access it on your PC - if it looks the same there, try looking at it with a good file undeleter like Fix-It Utilities or Norton, see if you can recover anything.
I just had a laptop hard drive fail on my last week, so I feel your pain. Fortunately I had fairly recent backups so I didn't lose too much.
Makes me think of someone's tagline I saw once:
"There are 2 kinds of people in this world, those with a backup plan in place, and those that have not yet had a catastrophic disk failure"
Good luck!
Search this site for SD CARD2
Most likely the issue is cause by the infamous Win CE bug.
If I have not posted the solution here, do a google search in the Web, you'll find detailed instructions.
[Edit] Your data is there, so don't do anything foolish, or else you'll have to reinstall everything. The SD CARD2 issue is very simple to resolve.
Thanks guys. Had a look as SD CARD2 threads and they did not seem to relate to me. Ran Pocket Mechanic and its Scandisk feature on the Card and it reported loads of "lost clusters". I then ran it again with "Automatically fix errors" and "discard lost clusters" and it merrily removed them all. So now my 738mb of data has gone. Rats. Oh well I will just start again a fresh and hope it does nto happen again.
i feel your pain. it's happened to me quite a few times on my XDA II, and once recently on my Kaiser when i damaged the mini-usb port (entirely my fault) and it started writing corrupted data onto the card when copying files over through activesync
I've since taken to keeping copies of my card data in addition to backups of my device. i usually carry 2 cards with me, one backup and one "current"; and i also keep backups of my SD cards on my PC, just in case.
Strangely, After a few hours most of the data on the card spontaneously returned. One minute it was empty and the next it had all the folders and files back again. Albeit with a lot of lost clusters and a heap of files reported as 32kb. Was able to recover a lot of the stuff and have got another 2GB card to use in the mean time.
Is there much point in reformatting the card? From experience, does anyone know if formatting might "fix" whatever caused it to lose clusters and go bad? Am considering sending it back for a warranty claim but how can I ascertain if it is actaully faulty once I reformat it.
Reformat or replace?

I have had USB flash memory seem to be faulty, especially when trying to transfer large amounts of data for a backup - then rebooted and re-inserted and had readable data. I would try reformatting, and then back up often and watch it like a hawk. Or, if it wasn't too expensive, just discard. Or, try to get a replacement - I did get an SD card replaced once at N/C because it wouldn't read in anything I tried it in, and I complained and was heard.
I bought a replacement 2GB panasonic microSD in Japan a couple of days back. (Always find the memory quality excellent there.) Their eyes were out on stalks when they saw my 6GB card. Must not be wideley available there yet. Anyway I plan to use the 2gb for the time being to rule out hardware and software causes. Have reformatted the suspect 6gb card. Will soon start using it again with everything backed up to the max and hopefully the problem will not return. I have been flashing a few different ROMs. Because of this I am becoming ever more reliant on the Storage Card for system recovery. So cant afford to have a dodgy one.
Hi, folks.
I use a HTC cruise with WM6.1 from Bepe. This morning, all files from my 8GB miniSD card just vanisehd!!! I removed the card from the phone and tried to access the files in windows with a sd card reader, but no file was seen. Although, there was only 3,5GB free!!! The files weren't there, but they kept occupying space. I used this software to recover the files. Awesome! They were all there, except for the ones stored in root. Also,I had to rename all root folders, the subfolders were OK. I just had to filter files marked as "good" and then copied them to my HD. The phone is working as usual, but I can't explain why exactly this happened? Would it be a vicious virus? A joke from Micro$oft? Any ideas?!?

All Storage Card Files Gone!

I've been using a 6G ScanDisk card for the last 6 months, without any problems. I needed to move some files from the Tilt's internal memory to the Card, and to my surprise there was only a folder named "FilesToBeDeleted" on the Card. I DID NOT CREATE THIS FOLDER! Oh, and by the way the folder was empty!
Checking the storage of the card from the Memory Setting of the PPC, shows about 3 G in use, which is about what I had on it.
Can anyone shed any light on what could have happened? I can re-format the Card....but is it going to loose data again? Is this something that has happened to others?
Thanks for any help,

i have read that this has happened to some people .. not me yet (fingers crossed) don't know what causes this. You could try a recovery software and see if you can get the stuff back.
Can you or anyone suggest a recovery software? Checking the MicroSD on my laptop shows 2.88 GB being used, (and of course 2.78 GB Free) so the data should be there. I have also saved additional data to the card and it works fine.
Just wondering...is there some kind of virus out there that would do this? For all the data to be "hidden" and a new folder to be created....the card just didn't create a folder by itself....
WM a card killer
The same thing happened to my 4GB SD card in Blue Angel (twice ). It seems to me that WM kills allocation table while writing to the card. I tried lots of different soft to recover my card and finally PC Inspector File Recovery did the job. I used card reader and this soft on PC to recover most of my files but the folder and filenames were sometimes messed up. When using PCI FR do not mark to many files to recover/save at the one time because it crashes.
Don't save anything on your card before recovering !

Yup, I used that program too. Recovered "missing files" problems on my previous hw6515 and twice on my TytnII 8GB micro SDdisk.
I've always had that "FilesToBeDeleted" folder too, it's normally hidden and when I delete it it comes back. Nothing special, just some folder the system wants there for some reason apparently, just like the other couple of hidden ones like WMDRM. If you didn't see it before and it now appeared it might have been hidden and the same thing that corrupt the FAT unhid it for some reason.
If you can see 2.88GB used on the PC, are you sure you have also have forced hidden files to display? Your data might be there but just hidden for some reason.
I have also saved additional data to the card and it works fine.

NEVER EVER do that to a media with a problem you might need to recover data from. This might just have ruined your last chance. On the opposite, when possible like on SD cards the first thing you'll want to do is set it as read-only.
When files are deleted, only their reference in the file table are, but the data itself is still present on the media, which allows recovery. But the locations the data is saved on are now marked as free, and anything you'll write on the card now can overwrite it, causing definitive loss.
Thanks a ton!!! The PC Inspector program worked great!! I was able to recover my files Next step, I guess, is to format the card and use it untill it decides to wipe my files out again. Of course my failth is the card will never be the same, and I'll keep a back up of the card also.....actually I was foolishly keeping the back-up for my Tilt on the card...can't trust that method anymore!
Thanks again for all the advise and information. As with all problems, you can always treat them as "learning opportunities", or...... throw the d*** thing out a window!!!!!
Same problem here, just ran into it last night and it's driving me nuts. Is there a way to recover/format the card from within the kaiser? Unfortunately the card reader I have has a max size limitation of 2gb and the card I'm using is 4gb - lame. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Borrow, lend, or steal another card reader.
When I purchased this MicroCard, from ScanDisk, it came with a SD adapter plus a USB Card reader. I threw the USB Card reader in my desk thinking that I would not need this. I found out, by accident, that this USB card reader was the only way I could read the card on a PC. Built in card readers on both my home desk top and laptop would not access the card....
Just passing on this little bit of information, because it never occured to me that I had to use that USB Card reader!
This happened to my girlfriend's phone too. One day some of her programs just didn't work and most everything was gone on her card. Never fixed it, just reformatted card. Scary though.
Yeah, I tried recovering the data using TestDisk, saw some recommendations for it from others with the same problem, but wasn't able to get anywhere with it unfortunately. So in the end all I could do was format it and start over. Ahhh, backups... if I'd only made one.
I think this is a WM issue. Since other devices have the same problem.
here is a quote from another thread

I have the same issue with my tytn2.
Sometimes when i play some mp3s from my SD card and the device goes to standby or the program is closed my SD card is suddenly empty.
Removing the SD card and put it back in usually fixes it, sometimes a softreset also works.
So i believe this is a WM issue

Any hints on how to disable this? I did a quick search and found mention of it but nothing detailing how to control it. Thanks.

I disabled it w/ kaiser tweak. Still i have the issue
Has anyone had the issue while pretty much not ever using Windows Media Player mobile? I was playing DRM'd audio files, is that possibly a common theme?
Could it be Moving PIE Cache?
Happened to me too. 8GB card. Just getting back up and running...wish I had read this last night. I put a bunch of stuff back on the card. Oops. Oh well. I think the common thread may be:
moving your PIE Cache to the SD Card.
Anyone else with this problem also move PIE Cache? Used Memmaid 2.0 to change it.
different in my case, I haven't changed any of the cache settings for PIE.

SDHC corruption problem

My 16gb sandisk card got corrupted yesterday and apparently it has something to do with this file EncFiltLog. I cannot copy anything to the card, cannot delete anything from the card and cannot format it. I found the solution in Blackstone forum...but as a kaiser owner I cannot benefit from it because we don't have DISK MODE on kaiser. Apparently it's been cooked in a few new roms for kaiser but Disk mode doesn't work. Has anyone successfully fixed this on kaiser? I,ve spend 60 pounds on the card and I don't feel like buying another one especialy if the problem might occur again.

PROBLEM:
Now, the problem all started when try to format the micro SDHC on the phone or on the PC with card reader.
Tried with differ format program also low level not worked.
DONT USE THESE!!! Waste of time!!!
SOLUTION:
So after doing some thinking about the situation, I figured that there was a problem with the card inserted and find the file EncFiltLog on it.
It is the WM 6.1 encription file. You can't delete, move files from or in to the SDHC.
The best way to solve this issue, as the hard-reset DOES NOTHING to fix this issue, would be to have windows hopefully find the connected device and format it. Here are the EASY steps which DO NOT involve using a dozen computers and has provided the same result EVERY time; which is a working on my 8gig memory in my HTC HD.
1. Connect the HD to the computer and select DISK DRIVE as the option on the on-screen popup on your phone. Don’t select ACTIVE SYNC. If you miss it, then go into your phone and press START>SETTINGS>CONNECTIONS TAB>USB to PC and select the bullet of DISK DRIVE and hit ok.
2. On your computer, (USING A WINDOWS XP MACHINE), go into your "My computer"
3. A window for will open with two columns.(If not, change the view to "Group") We are looking at the RIGHT side right now. In there is has three categories, and we are only focusing on ONE of them. LOOK for STORAGE which should be the center category.
4. Click with right to the desired "Storage device; A: ; D: E;", it will take a minute or two depending on your computer speed and environment to populate your hard drive and connected memory devices.
5. You will eventually see your PHONE internal storage listed. IT WILL TAKE SOME TIME BECAUSE YOUR PHONE INTERNAL STORAGE IS CORRUPTED!
***BE SURE WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT IS IN FACT YOUR PHONE AND NOTHING SOMETHING ELSE LIKE YOUR MAIN HARD DRIVE OR SOME OTHER STORAGE DEVICE WITH IMPORTANT FILES ON THERE***
****I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU FORMAT THE WRONG DEVICE***
6. Choose format and let it format the drive. This should also take a few minutes. Select FAT32 and name is whatever you want! Let this finish COMPLETLY!

I received a corruption error a few months back because windows media player decided to sync my media files to my storage card. what error did you receive when you attempted to format it? I do not want to sound arrogant but when you placed the card into the micro sd/sd adapter did you unlock the adapter?

Yes that was the first thing i did. I tried formatting it on my laptop with 2 different apps and also on my PPC without success. I'm able to copy about 90% of my files to my laptop's harddrive but cannot save anything to the card or format it. The problem occured yesterday when I was creating a new Word document on my PPC... it wouldn't save to storage card and some error window poped out. Since then the phone has been a mess. It was barely usable because I had a lot of programs on my memory card which were used all the time by the ppc, had to hard reset and it's fine now of course until I try to browse files on my card.
I'm guessing that you didn't have any problems formatting your card?
Windows native formatting program gave this error: Windows cannot complete formatting
SDFormatter: the memory card is write-protected. please release the write protect switch"(have tried formatting the card with the switch in both positions to no avail)
some ppc formatting app "told" me to check whether any programs placed on SDHC card are being used by the system at the moment
I had the same problem with my 8 GB SDHC card. I spend few days trying to find solution. Most likely you card is gone for good. There is only one thing that I didn’t try and that maybe could work is to format card on Linux. They said it helps in some of the cases. Good luck with your card but be ready for the worst.

Thanks...I've tried deleting files and formatting under linux using Qparted....didn't work
Yes this doesn't look too good....I think the only thing I can do now is to look for a Kaiser rom with working DISK MODE and try to use HD users solution.
SDFormatter V2 from Panasonic
I once had the probleme and I did use the mentionned program.
It did solved my issue.
You should be able to find it for free on internet.

Perhaps this is different than I've experienced, but multiple times my SD card has become unreadable on my Tilt, and I just run a disk check on it, it finds weird/bad stuff, then it's fine again when it's done.
Not sure what's going on with that, as I've never made any sense of the chkdisk files that are created that are parts of the bad data.

Thanks all, I've tried that Panasonic formatting program hell I have tried at least 10 other programs for formatting, repairing and checking(chkdisk didn't help either) cards none of them have worked. And the most annoying thing is that I sent an email to sandisk on thursday last week and they haven't replied yet...I'm going to claim warranty replacement.
Do you have a digital camera? If so try and format with that as i had a simlar problem again a SanDisk to which the computer would not format, the phone would not format yet i used Fuji DSLR to format and it worked.

Crap...I do have a digital camera but it uses XD cards they are of different shape than SD's. I'll try to find someone with a SD capable digital camera.
Thanks.
Ok looks like my dad has a SD camera one problem though it is some ancient device it's not SDHC capable. Will it work and if it will, won't I waste my card in some way?

Will need to be SDHC compatable and as i say i can't be sure every camera will work, just did for me but if your going to have ti exchange it or it's duff then whats the risk?
Sounded like last ditch efforts to me
to bad ther is no followup on this matter, but i would advise a digital camera to. it always helped me out. lowlevel format on a nikkon dslr!
Have you tried this little baby.... http://www.cnetx.com/format/download.asp
The trial allows you to format without purchasing, but it's worth buying for the next time it happens - I was stuck with all other programs not working until this one.
Good luck.
Ps. Sorry if it doesn't work and I get your hopes up!!
Had a similar problem 2 days ago with my micro SD SanDisk Class 2 8Gb that I use on my HD. Became corrupted after trying to erase some movies while connected to my PS3.
Tried this: www[dot]sdcard[dot]org/consumers/formatter [didn't work: Micro SD write protected]
Tried GParted on Ubuntu, didn't work!
Tried MiniTool Partition Wizard and other XP formatting tools, didn't work!
Tried formatting with the SD inside the Blackstone and connected to PC, didn't work!
Got VERY frustrated and bought a new cheap micro SD 8Gb class 6+adaptor [1300Yen, about 15Eur]
Now I followed the Digital camera trick, and formatted the corrupted microSD in less than 5 sec!!!
I think it doesn't matter what phone you use the SD in, any relatively recent digital camera will do the trick for you.
THANK YOU

MicroSD Car Messed Up

My SD card has started acting up on me. Recently, a ton of folders with gibberish symbol names showed up. I can't delete these folders in either my phone or my PC. These folders have nothing in them. I can't transfer files to or from it. While in my computer, the card window will occasionally freeze and tell me the thing has stopped responding. I have made sure the lock switch is open on the adapter. I'd like to flash a new ROM but the card won't even open in my PC. Says I need to format it before I can use it, but no method (freeware, Explorer, CMD) will work. I get thrown messages about how it won't work or whatever. In fact, I was trying diskmgmt.msc while typing this earlier but I got a BSOD memory dump. First time I've had one on this PC. Anyway, anyone know what I can do? I just want it to work, I paid a lot for this card. I have a feeling it's because I let the device format it, but I dunno. IF it helps, I'm running Win7 x64. Thanks.
Like you said, your MicroSD is probably done for. You might try to format it using your PC. But it probably won't work.
Some manufacturers offer lifetime warranty on flash memory so you might be able to swap it for a new one since this obviously isn't your fault. I've done so with at least two memory cards before (but then again I'm from Europe so it might be different for me).
I'm on my second MicroSD card, after I started getting warnings that certain files couldn't be accessed.
Actually, the second one (both are 8gb: first was a SanDisk, 2nd is a Kingston) gave me a warning yesterday.
Never has this problem with other phones... I don't know if the MicroSD format is prone to this sort of thing, or it is an interaction with the X1 - but it doesn't inspire confidence.
I think I will do a weekly copy of all files from the card onto my PC.

[Q] SD card Help

If this is in the wrong section I apologise
Hi, well my milestone started getting really slow and crashing,
the back touch button at the bottom panel then stopped working and then the SDHC card could not be read by the phone.
I sent the phone off to be repaired, however the microSD won't connect to the computer. Searching on google has brought me no help at all (just those rubbish 'tech-help sites' which copy and paste from each other...)
the computer will add a drive (unused drive letter of D) which is shaded out, and says
'please insert a disk into drive D'
So I think that it has broken. Is there any way of recovering data? there's photos and alot of stuff on it.
thanks very much,
Ross
What you probably need (unless your card is really damage), is to format it, anyway if you search on the net there are some free programs that may help you to recover data from an SD (I don't remember which ones, you have to search them by yourself..)
If you need to format it, sometimes is just enough connect the SDcard and disconnected again and let windows see it as a new drive, then it will ask you automatically to format it.
I recommend (to avoid problem like this in the future) to do the FULL format not the quick one.
If with windows won't work, you can use a software to partition hard drives, like this two (the best actually):
http://download.cnet.com/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html (support linux partitions for app2sd)
or:
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm
I recommend you to try first with Partition Wizard Home Edition, I had your same
problem a couple of times and this sofware always helped me, and, if in the future you are planning to flash new roms and modifiy your phone, just as a suggestion, is always better backup your SD, on your PC or on a pen drive.
Good luck, and let me know if you will succeed..
Thanks for that, I tried this out, but unfortunately none of it could help me
My SD card won't connect at all, the drive appears but it won't show a card at all, even in the partition tool, or the windows control panel, disk manager
thanks,
Ross
Is it a 16gb card?
On windows xp, you may have a problem seeing it.
You would need a card reader that can read 16gb sd cards if this is the case.
I know this because I've had a devil of a time making an ext2 partition on my 16gb card this week
I finally managed to do it but nothing I did made windows xp see the card through an older card reader. I had to keep the card in the phone and use the phone as a card reader
it's an 8gb card, and I use windows 7 sorry, I bought a 16gig one as a replacement, and it reads fine, I just want to get the data, I can't even re-format cause it won't recognise it :/
