A couple of weeks ago I noticed that my power button felt different on my Z1. At first I thought it was my imagination, but more and more I was sure something wasnt right.
Last week on the way to work, my colleague who also has a Z1 used my phone to look at something and his first comment was "Whats up with your power button??"
It has no definite feeling when pressing it, its almost impossible to tell if you have pressed it or not, it looks and feels recessed too.
When trying his phone it was exactly as I remembered it to be, when you push it you can feel as response (small click or resistance), on mine there is nothing!
So I contacted Sony Xperia, who were suprised by the described issue. Long story short I have to return the phone to them for a 5 - 7 day turnaround repair.
Anyone else had the same issue? Or even sent their phone back to Sony in the UK? I am a little concerned that once it is prised open to be repaired it will never be the same again! All in all, for the £550 I paid for a premium handset, it is the first one that I have had any hardware issues with.

I saw a problem like that with a device of my friend and he felt exactly in the same way, it's a faulty botton, have to be replaced.

I can truly understand you. Same here. I always get a mid range phones and never had problems. This one I paid a lot of money, issues everywhere. I sent mine back to Sony as well, but for different reason.

Was your device ok when it came back? All the edges aligned, sealed etc etc?? It is a worry for me, how do I know it is waterproof still for example?

Mine do not come back yet, I sent it back via warranty 2 weeks ago. I will let you know. Anyway Sony Service have to provide best service for your phone and it should be still under warranty even when the phone come back to you but in which condition this is a mystery for all of us.

They said 5 - 7 days on the phone Friday, if you sent it two weeks ago and are still waiting then that's pretty poor I think.

I think is needed a experience because you have to take apart all phone and I will suggest to let do this job to Sony. And of curse it will have to be seal again to make the water resistance working again. If you do all of this the warranty will be gone.
An update on mine, it got worse and now has been sent back for warranty repair at Sony, well they use a company called SBE Ltd in the UK
I'm not very impressed to be honest, this is the first phone I've had to return to the manufacturer for repair, this was meant to be a quality product. So there is at least 3 people with the same problem, maybe more who haven't noticed. Potentially there is an issue with the design or button component.
In so cheese off as I have to use a crappy Nokia Lumia 800 Windows phone for the period it is away!
I have been looking at a Nexus 5 or Note 3 as a replacement, selling mine on eventual return from repair..
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I'm having issues with my volume down rocker. It is much harder to press then volume up it also doesn't have the clicking sound volume up gives when you press it. Of course I'm within my return window so I'm waiting for my replacement phone to get here so I can ship the one I currently have back

at first i have rooted my phone so the warranty is already gone..and Because I live in Iran and there is no experienced or official Sony branches to do the stuff i have to pay a lot of money to ordinary people who have the tools for doing it and praying really hard to have my z1 remained water resistance..and another problem is that this button is very well designed and has a good material which it doesnt get gray or orange after a while.for sure the replacement doesnt have the same great quality and thats a failure :|

Ok, but if the button still working I think is not worth to open it and risk much more, BTW is not the button problem but the hardware component under the button.
Z1 button issue
I'm from India and have the same problem with the button. I bought Z1 around October last year. The button started getting worse gradually from the beginning of January, and now there's absolutely no feedback on pressing. It almost feels as if there's a spring under the button.
If anyone has given the phone for repairs to Sony for this issue, please reply. I'm also worried about the waterproofing and other possible damage to the device, specially given the fact that it's got a non-removable back so opening up the device might be a mess.
I've seen a video on YouTube about the z
As far as the Z is concerned there are about 4 screws and the rest is glued. Front- and backside.
Now, you can guess if the phone is still waterproof after putting it back together.
Even with skilled techs and the appropriate equipment I highly doubt it.
Here is the link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPN930fohyo&feature=youtu.be
It's a German video but I think the pictures speak for themselves.
Best thing you could do is to ask the repair center for a guarantee on wich you can depend on (written of course)

Using my Z1 for nearly a month now and the device power button was slightly a bit wearing off but that wasn't my concern. I'm just worried bout the waterproof capability. If the Z was glue front and back, How long can it last with all those nature element?

It can be forever if you use the device properly and you you keep in mind to don't use the flaps a lot and keep them clean. Flaps like that can do great job for 2 years without problem but time and natural degradation is on they way, so if you will replace the flaps after this time is fine to me. But if you keep leaving the phone in you car on dashdoard under the sun all the time clearly this can compromise the assembly and the sealing of the phone. So practically depend of how you use your phone.

Yes , opening the phone for a button will be a mess and maybe is not covered by warranty so if the button working well I will not be worry about it. The day when it will not work then you will get the new button.

I started this thread, it is definitely a problem and you should get it repaired. Mine was sent back and now has been repaired, not very impressive for a "premium" handset!
It was only away for just over a week.

Yeah, I'm thinking of giving it in next week. Very disappointing from a flagship phone. Did yours show any visible sign of damage after repairs? Even scratches etc.?

Hi all just wanted to know if anyone has heard of this happening before. I got the XZ on the day of release and yesterday when I took it off charge i noticed a crack in the LCD. The phone has no physical damage whatsoever, no cracked glass or chip or anything, its in new condition. I'm particularly careful with my phone and do not recall it ever being dropped or misused. Any advice?
Sorry i am unallowed to post a link so i have attached a photo

Hello, I have some big problem with my Xperia Z since yesterday:
The power button stopped working. It doesn't do anything. I can't lock the screen or unlock it. I did not drop the device or something, it just happened.
Sometimes when I press volume up, it acts like the power button and asks if I want to shutdown etc. Also I had the problem that my screen was upside down yesterday. I could not get it good and even changing the launcher did not help. Really strange, as if my sensor was completely going nuts.
Anyway, I am backing up right now, and I will try a factory reset. But this is just strange. I am running 4.2.2.
Anyone an idea what is going on?

I recently had it in the shower, but with the flaps closed.
Does it look like water damage?
I've recently had the same problem.
Also took in the shower, but because the backglass was lifted slightly from the case because of the overheating problem, water came inside and messed everything up.
Phone is now being repaired. And they said it is water damage.

Just explain to them that, the flaps were closed but still water got in to the phone.
I got the same button failure when water went in during shower. Got a replacement from Sony.
I have sent it for repair. Not to the default repair center in the Netherlands but to another company which is specialized in repairs too. Cleaning the device costs 20 Euro. There is a chance other components will be broken too after opening/cleaning, but they will try their best.
I have chosen this option instead of returning to the shop/Sony. That because the devices in the Netherlands are sent to a company called Dynafix. Although they have 'fix' in their name their reputation is that they do not fix phones. They sent you big bills for unfixed phones. Mine has waterdamage and colored stickers anyway, so I already knew for 99% chance that I will have the phone returned unrepaired and have to pay a lot of money just for them to see the colored stickers. Or the chance that they will repair it but that it can cost more than 300 euro (they say they swap a lot of components and charge you a lot)...
I will update when I have my Xperia Z back.

Good luck. Yes I understand. Service center folks are far from being considerate, atleast here in India. They lack knowledge and it's hard to reason with them.
Hello,
After submerging the phone under water it seems that the power button is pressed all the time.
Did anyone have this issue? Did the button start to work after a few hours?
I will try to dry it up....
It seems that all the new phones have issues. (Just switched from HTC One)

Update:
They have 'repaired' my Xperia Z. They swapped the mainboard. It did cost €235...
But I haven't been able to use my device anymore. When they gave my device back I noticed the following things:
- proximity sensor is not working
- notification led is not working anymore
- light sensor is not working anymore
(all those functions worked before I brought the device to them)
I went back to the store and told them about these problems. They said: for 35 euros we might be to fix this.
They tried but where not able to fix. I have not paid these 35 euros.
When I came home I accepted my loss of these sensors and I started installing my device and apps.
But there are even more problems!
- At a random time my device switches off, even if battery is full;
- Sometimes I can boot;
- Sometimes it even doesn't boot... Only wipe with Flashtool or through recovery can get the device booting again.
So I have paid an extra €235 and I can still throw it in the bin....
I think I am going to contact Sony...

You should have contacted Sony in first hand. Now that the phone has been messed up by a third company, they can claim that the warranty is voided!

I got some kind or real strange behavior just a secound ago.
My Powerbutton seemed not to work even after pressing it a few times, i than called myself and it worked (first though the battery would be empty).
Afterwards it worked again, no problems whatsoever.
What could that be? It wasnt dropped or washed or whatever, indicators are white
Hi Guys
Yesterday I took my phone out of my pocket and immediately realised it had 4 or 5 thin cracks emanating from the left, roughly where the charging flap is.
This is a MASSIVE headache. The phone was perfectly fine one moment as I recorded a video with it... I then put it in my pocket and when I removed it 30 mins later it had broken. I did not drop, bang, bash, knock nothing it. I paid cash for my phone so I have guarded it with my life. I never had anything else in the pocket with it and it was loose fitting shorts.
Now normally this would not be the end of the world, but I am on holiday in South Africa. I live in the UK so warranty repairs I assume would have to happen there. I have Amex insurance on it, usually they are very good, but if they send me a new phone I would likely be liable for a huge chunk, as in 40% of the value, import duty.
If they make a cash value payment to me I can buy the phone here, but then if it breaks in the UK the service centre there won't touch it.
I honestly feel really angry about this. I sold my iphone 5 in September and bought this phone, knowing full well that perhaps the biggest price I would pay would be the drop in after sales care. I would have been able to live with the crack until I get back to the UK, but like I said my phone is totally unusable.
Oh yes and I am only going back in May!! That is 5 more months so I can't be without a phone for half a year...
Has this happened to anybody? My circumstances are pretty unique, but can anybody offer any advice at all? surely people's phones break while on holiday, Sony can't just turn their back on me?
Thanks,
Johann

Ok my only camera is my phone, but I will borrow my mum's phone tomorrow and take some pictures in the light. I have heard about spontaneous cracks with the Z ultra but not really Z1... I would be keen to know if anybody else discovered cracks...
Hi I didn't end up taking a photo but thought I would post an update.
I called Sony Mobile South Africa and they will NOT do a warranty repair here as the phone was bought in the UK (Why did I leave Apple??) however if I want to I can have them fix the screen for me for R4000 which is £236!! Plus the phone would have to be couriered to Johannesburg about 1600km away from Cape Town...and couriered back at my expense....
I then contacted Sony Mobile UK and a warranty repair can only happen if I courier the phone to the UK and pay for the courier back to SA. One of the major risks in this would be potentially being slammed with an import duty on the phone of 40% which would be about £240... even though I do not live here and will be taking the phone with me back to the UK in May...
In the end I had to courier it to London at £40 today my partner will now collect the phone and send it to my insurance company who will then either fix it or replace it.... my partner will then send the phone back to me at approximately £70.
Why am I telling you all this? Basically, don't let your phone break when you are on holiday... especially if you are on a long holiday like me, 5 months...
Sony's aftersales care is PATHETIC compared to Apple... I keep on asking myself, why did I do this? I knew it at the time and it was perhaps the single biggest thing putting me off leaving Apple... little did I know my phone would break just 3 months after getting it...and that a cracked screen in Xperialand means UNUSABLE screen... unlike my apple phone that had cracks in the screen for many moons before I bothered to fix it.

I have this issue as well, sent mine in today.. Not a single case, same issue as the Z...
Hello All,
My Z1 has recently begun to give off a sort of feedback when it vibrates (via the speakers).
I've ran diagnostic tests on my phone and all tests seem to come back positive and error-free.
However, when I run the Vibration test, sometimes the vibrator works perfectly fine (for about two runs), and then it vibrates with the negative "ZzzzzZzzZ" sound.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue with their Z1? Perhaps someone else (if anyone is experiencing it as well) can further elaborate on the issue. Would really like to get this issue fixed without having to send it back to Sony :crying:
I have the same problem with my Z1 (6903). There's a weird buzzing sound from the speaker right after the vibrator activate. Would love to be able to fix this without sending to Sony as well.

Ahh, that's unfortunate. I live in the Bahamas, so doing that is pretty difficult for me at the moment. Were you able to go to any Sony store, or did you have to go directly to a service center? How long did you have to wait for your replacement?

I submitted my phone yesterday morning and person in charge told me they will try to do any sort of update first and if still there is an issue, they will replace it. I will suggest you to go directly to service center.

Ohhh that sounds tooooo far from your location. Try repair your phone via SUS or PCC. But first take full backup. Hope this can solve your issue. Though chances are very less.

Yeah, unfortunately. Considering this is such an expensive phone with "top-quality components", you'd have expected more..
I'm also having the squeaky vibration problem...
Hi, I'm also having the squeaky vibration problem. My phone is about 6 months old and I've been having this noisy vibration squeak for at lease 6 weeks now. I'm running slimkit evo 8.1 on a unlocked bootloader. Before I try to get it fixed by Sony, do I need to reset back to stock and lock my bootloader?
Could anyone give me some pointer to what I could say to get the phone exchanged for a brand new one? I can't be without a phone for 2-3 weeks (estimated service time by resale store).
I have a 5 months old z1, and ive had this issue since the first month i bought it....i guess its a weak point, which is pity for a flag**** phone...

Hi macooz,
Sorry for the late reply. If you are sending it back to Sony, you should always revert back to Stock, as custom firmwares void your warranty.
You could simply tell them that your Vibration Motor is not functioning properly (giving off a squeaky noise instead of an actual vibration) and you would like for it to be either repaired / replaced or have your entire phone exchanged for a new one.

I agree with you. Issue is that because the phone is encased in gorilla glass, it makes it a bit difficult to change any parts on your own. Disassembly videos are available on YouTube, but who wants to take the risk of breaking their phone's casing and then have to replace additional parts?

Hi,
No work around , besides trying to do it yourself and losing your warranty.
Was without my phone for a month and a half. Eventually got it replaced.

Unfortunately, I agree with Soka on this one. I have had the replacement Vibrator for months now, but a little reluctant to open my device as it requires heating and having to purchase new adhesives and so on. I am getting those items in the very near future though, so I'm going to go ahead and do it!
My best piece of advice would be to purchase a replacement back (in case you crack / break your original one while removing it) and replacement adhesives before actually performing the DIY Fix.
Hi there Im facing this problem too, I open a new thread but then @soka pointed me to this one, I record a video from the sound
they had already replace the vibrator and the main board, but the issue still continue, here is the thread I open:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z1/help/problem-sound-vibrator-t2922957
Hope to get fixed or replaced soon
Well, finally fixed my vibrator problem. I opened the back of my phone using a Hot Air Gun and pry tools, then replaced the vibrator module. Unfortunately, this seems to be the only valid solution.

I don't know why, but I'm sure I didn't do it. My Sony Xperia Z1s C6916, which I bought from T-Mobile USA, suddenly had a crack in the screen, across the screen, left to right. The screen now is unresponsive and keep reading wrong touch controls. I cannot use it anymore.
Now I google it and found it's a well known problem amongst the Xperia Z series user, and that Sony, most of the time, won't recognize that is a manufacturer defect, and won't repair it under warranty.
As much as I hate it, I need to get it fixed. Question is.... to those with a similar problem, did you send your phone in to Sony for Screen replacement on any Z series ( Z, ZL, ZR, Z Ultra, Z1, etc.). To those who paid for the repairs, how much was it? I just wanna know because a local mobile phone repair shop can do it for $150 USD, more or less.
However, as much as I would hate the Sony right now, I trust them for repairing on their own products, resealing it the water-resistant ways, Though you can make sure that I'll treat it like any other phones, water-resistant or not.
What I'm concern about is the cost. Xperia Care online are idiots who can't tell the difference between a Sony Xperia and a Samsung Galaxy.
Also, I contacted Sony via email, twitter and facebook. I asked how and where to send the phone in. None have reply. on via email, they gave me the reference number.
What I need is for them to open a case, RMA form and number, and an address for me to send it to.
They are taking it awfully slow and I'm hating them for it.
If I could choose, I would want to send it straight to Sony HQ in Japan for repairs.
Have you tried calling them? Their customer service is very good.

I have to deal with support of various manufacturers daily (working as an it professional)
In Germany it's like this:
As end user your reseller must look at the case. If you bought it in a store go there and ask them.
HOWEVER
I've discovered that most of them are stupid and/or non cooperative.
So your best chance is calling the Sony support. Go to their website and look up their telephone number. When you call them you most likely need to give them some kind of serial (imei). After, tell them your problem and you most likely will get a return sticker. Send in your device via mail and get a repaired (or new) I device about a week later.
I've discovered that this way is the fastest and less troublesome way to deal with broken devices

I'm in a similar situation. TMo US took one look at it and said they won't fix it, and then informed me that I didn't have device protection on my plan (thought I had, grumble grumble) so they can't do anything for me. Called their claims department, was again informed that they cannot do anything for me.
Has anybody had luck with Sony HQ performing repairs? Or, has anybody had any luck with swapping over a clean screen and digitizer from another Z1s? I can follow teardown and rebuild guides to make the swap, and have all the small device tools necessary to swap the screen.
Meanwhile, my wife has no phone until we find some solution ...

Subscribing to this thread, because I noticed exactly the same thing yesterday. Took phone out of pocket and the bottom right of the glass is cracked. Not affecting use (for now) because it is in the large bezel area, but I did nothing but take it out of my pocket. Please let us know if it is repaired under warranty by Sony - I know TMo is going to say it was my fault.
Don't some of you use a leather pouch to protect the phone? It takes most of the pressure on the screen when in the pants or something

Never been much of a pouch (or case) user. If I knew the phone glass would crack spontaneously, I probably would have done something different (like not buy it).

If you want to save a lot, you can try to replace the screen by yourself. But it is hard job...

Sony fixed my cracked phone, free of charge. I guess it was under warranty. They didn't even contacted me, they just ship it back to me with a UPS tracking number.

Wow you really got lucky! Either that, or Sony knows there's a problem with their phones and don't want to get into a whole debacle about it.

I really feel I lucked out. I was thinking I need to pay 200-300 USD for repairs and was dreading it. I even didn't wanted to send it in because I didn't have the money to spare.

Well ok then. Looks like it is time to try and find a backup phone to use for a week or so while I send mine in.

Any idea how long after they received it you got that tracking number? They've had mine for a little over a week and I'm just curious. Thanks
In about 2 weeks, i remember i sent it via fedex 4-11, they receive it 4-15 and i received the tracking number on the 25th.

This is a good method to reduce cost, but you'll have a higher chance in losing your water / dust resistance. You can also damage your phone if you're not careful. Not sure if people really care about the resistances though.

I sent my phone in to Laredo as well, my phone didn't have a warranty associated to it and they replaced the screen (along with some other parts) for free. If you want water/dust resistance, shell in the $25 for inspection / shipping and see what they'll charge you. For me they just repaired it without leaving an email or phone call. If they charge you an unreasonable price ($150 < x) then have them send it back to you and repair it yourself or have a third-party vendor do it for you.

In fact , the Sony customer support can't guarantee water resistance either after disassemble your Z1s.
The oem precut adhesive should not cause any problems with ruining your ip58 waterproof.
I've done lcd swaps and it should be properly sealed if you use that. As I've read, brand new Z1s have leaked water aswell so it might be about luck.

This just happened to my bf's z1s. He put it in his pocket when he got out of the car, walked into our apt, and when he took the phone out it was completely cracked and the screen was unresponsive.
He's sending it out today be checked by Sony. The rep made it VERY clear that the "engineers" would look at the phone and determine if it was a manufacture defect or not. If it was a defect, they'd fix it and return it. If not, then they'll call and discuss repair options.
You might not be able to tell from the photos, but the cracks are under the glass, and it's clear that it's not do to user abuse. Hopefully the "engineers" see it the same way.
Posts like these helped convince us that sending the phone to Sony was worth a shot, so I just wanted to share our experience. I hope he has the same success you did with getting it fixed. I'll update in a couple of weeks on the verdict.
PS: for anyone else that faces this issue, TMO insurance will not cover this without a $150 deductible. We were told that regardless of what caused the crack, they don't exchange phones with cracked screens. The TMO rep we talked to def didn't believe that the crack happened spontaneously. Don't waste your time.
