So I went back to stock OS to play around for a bit. I've realized how used to I am to the Softkey bar in CM10.x/CM11 ROMs. Is ther anyway to replace the stupid Amazon softkey bar with Google's stock Android softkey bar?

Maybe play around with the systemui.apk, would be kinda interesting because while I prefer cm, I do like the way Amazon's soft key bar hides itself in full screen mode, reclaims a bit more space for playing a video.

Yeah, it's nice to for videos and gaming. But still, I prefer to have my home button in the center. I'll play around with the SystemUI.apk a bit. I'm guessing I'll have to disable Amazon's SoftKeyBar.apk as well. It would also be nice to enable recent apps as well, but maybe that's biting off more than I can chew for right now. Anyways, I think I'll play around with it.

It looks very nice and fluid on the xoom. I like the new lay out it has for Honeycomb. The new store front UI is very nice as well. I like the scrollable Recommended For You across the top, and layout in general. I do like how in the settings it now shows which device name it is labeled as so you can change it on the amazon website to correctly reflect which device is which. I think my only gripe is that you can't change the background to a sepia effect so its more comfortable to read on.
My xoom updated automatically. I went to my apps on my Nexus s and it wasn't showing it as available for update, I had to search for it manually to perform the update. So for anyone not seeing the update on possible other devices do try the manual search in the market.

Nice, millions times better than before but it would be nice if they added page turning animation and soother scrolling.
Any screenshot ?
yeah, i played around with it for a while. its a little buggy still, but a definite improvement. at least there is negative space around text. it would be nice to have better animations, two column support, and better overall horizontal screen responsiveness. the store in particular is borderline useless in horizontal orientation. about 30% of the way there
APK please?

I do tend to agree with both of you, while one of my main loves for Honeycomb is its drive to be very functional in landscape it does leave much to be desired in any apps as far as portrait goes.
Animations would be nice as would the two pages per screen, I guess owning a kindle myself it seems like they try to keep the app geared more like the device itself. I'm still surprised there aren't color options to increase ease of readability and provide longer battery options, two things the device itself captures but while Amazon designs the app to be more device like not just software like, fails to capture here.
I'm guessing the lack of these features leads to desire to want a kindle. Wouldn't want all the creature comforts and selling points in an app that could potentially steal your devices thunder.

Under my settings all I see is Deregister This Device.
Device Name
And the option to use the volume buttons to change pages
No color controls. If I'm missing something please show me. I'd love to change this. I know some of the other readers in the market have this option.

You should have a brightness icon in the action bar, fourth from the right. Color options are there.
Can you sideload books into the Kindle app? I tried copying a mobi file to the kindle directory but it doesn't work..
Yes I have sideloaded books to kindle. Specifically some mobi files on android development from commonsware. I just dropped them in the kindle folder and they showed up.

I'm not a huge fan of the layout now with the size of the gap around the text, there is a huge ammount of real estate wasted.

Ok finally got it working. I had to force stop the kindle app first and restarted it before it could see the new books.
Are you sure the kindle app automatically detects the books once you copy them over to the kindle folder?
nice app but I like more to read ebooks on my Kindle. better for my eyes

No I am not sure of that. I may have not had the Kindle app running or I may have hit "sync and check for new items." I have a few books I need to add to my xoom so I will try again today and pay attention.
On a different note is anyone else having problems with text select? It used to be the kindle app had a magnification of the text so I could tell what was being selected. They did away with that but kept the crappy handles. If they shift to the honeycomb text select I am fine without the magnification but using the small (kindle specific) handles I can not tell where I am which makes it difficult to grab a precise section of text.
Edit: I should mention I am at the smallest font size. I read mostly technical books and the more text I can get on the screen at once the easier it is to follow. Particularly sample code. On large font sizes text selection is not as much of a problem.
Does anyone know if text to speech will come to the Android Kindle??
What Ver do you have? im on 3.2.0.35
Any thoughts on the best launcher for the Dell Streak 7?
I'm using ADW currently, but don't really like it. I use Zeam on my Streak 5, and switch off with Go Launcher, but neither of those work on the Streak 7.
Thoughts?
I use Go Launcher on my Streak 7....I like it because it was free, has lots of customization options and it lets you add multiple icons to screens instead of one at a time.
I couldn't install it from Android market though,,,it said my streak 7 was incompatible so I got it from manufacturers web site & it installed/runs perfectly.

I have my streak 7 rooted and running 2.2.2 which it came with if that's what you mean?
Go Launcher is the best.
For me ADW was the best one, due to their high density icon hack (the best looking ever!). Few months ago it started not working, but I am still using ADW out of habit.
I use lightning, small, fast, stable, free as custom as I need, nice feature that I haven't seen on other launchers you can select independent layouts for horz/vertical much nicer than getting everything perfect then flipping on it side and it sucking.
ive been using Halo launcher it works ok.
go launcher hd for tablets
There isnt as many options as Ex but the dock is on the bottom in landscape, like tablets are supposed to be. Im on CM10 and the tablet patch doesnt work on the latest version, so the tablet format is what drawed me to this launcher. There are 4 free themes that are pretty good, and the EX themes apply icons and wallpaper. Its much smoother than Trebuchet on this particular version of CM10

Go launcher hd ... Oops ITS IN THE TITLE
Any experiences with Apex launcher ?
Anyone know if there is a theme out there for tablets that makes the tablet look like the kindle fire? I found one with a google search but it doesn't work well with tablets because the images are too small.
Curious as to what you all use, see what the majority is.
Errm, what's a Phablet?
I assume he means the phone style (stock) vs. tablet style (requires root).

Just a term I heard used, because the UI is hybrid tablet/phone. Phone + Tablet = Phablet.
Will be using rob43's Salad Bar II as soon as it comes out.
Tablet mode is unsatisfactory to me, as the back button is put on the far left of the screen, while I favor my right hand.
Stock but fully locked in landscape mode.
tablet mode
Just got mine today and turning in tablet was the second thing I did (after rooting it ). I'm not fully committed to it yet. There seems to be a bit of wasted space on the home screen where you can't put widgets or icons but I think I prefer it to phablet.
I tried Tablet ui, but in my opinion, it wasn't that good. I actually love the phone ui as it looks just right and to me, it's perfect just the way it is
I am using true tablet mode, I exclusively use my N7 in landscape, unless an app forces me to use portrait so it just works better.
Phone UI.

I want to use it in tablet mode but i keep reading about issues people are having so i haven't tried it. I did like the layout on my transformer prime better.
Mostly i dislike the centered navigation buttons(I use mine in landscape pretty much always) and the landscape lockout on the home screen. If someone could modify the launcher only into tablet mode without a dpi or build.prop change I'd try it.

There's a free app called Set Orientation that lets you lock everything in landscape mode.

It's called Hybrid UI. Phablet UI would be something designed for actual phablets, such as the Galaxy Note.
I enjoy the hybrid UI. I'm already used to my Galaxy Nexus and it's great to be able to have them set up almost identical to one another. I like the having consistency between my devices.
I'm digging the latter, but I prefer to name it the 'tablone'

not a fan of the true tablet mode on this guy ..... I like it set up just like my GSIII
As my SIG states....

Using the hybrid atm. Sounds sad but I'm too lazy to switch it over plus I got a replacement coming and it would be pointless for me to. I actually like the hybrid myself.
I did a quick search of the Nook HD forums but didn't find anything about hiding the dock so started this thread. If there is another, please point me to it. Thanks.
Setting up a couple HD's with CM10.1 and lots of games & such kids, for Christmas. Kids are 6-10 years old. I'd like to hide the Dock. I don't think CM10.1 allows it to be hidden but I'm not sure. Anyone have any insight? How about a good alternate Launcher app that would allow it. Suggestions?
