Hello,
I was wondering if it is necesarry to install security apps on my android. On my previous windows Mobile device I had installed a few, but they made the device laggy.
1) Do android security apps make the device also laggy?
Second I got the feeling there is no real threat (yet) for viruses for mobile devices. But I am an noobie, so
2) Are there mobile viruses to worry about? Or How necesarry is it to secure the device with anti virus apps.
Then there is the ani theft security.
3) cool, but does anyone have real experiance with that (working i hope)?
And finaly.
4) What apps are there to be recomanded by you?
thanx in advance
i dont think is a need for now as i dont counter any virus & my mobile is always stick to me so if really will be stolen... i will accept the fate -.-"
it does lag the mobile abit.
Hi,
For security i am running the following apps;
- wavesecure beta
provides protection against theft etc.
you can remotely wipe and lock your phone and track your phone
it also provides the option to backup your data ( sms etc. )
- lookout mobile security
same options as wavesecure beta + a virusscanner
I'm running the rooted generic 2.73.*** rom with the custom 1.91 teknologist kernel...
No lag whatsoever....

You probably havent felt the pleasure of completely lag free phones...well anyway, there potentially can be viruses for rooted phones.Apps are scanned by google before they get published on the android market, so 99.9% of the market apps are safe. Besides, if an app is malicious, it will probably need root access, which will pop up a message for it.
I also use lookout on my hero, it is a gr8 security app, and i beleve is nesessary as android does have a high vulnerability for malicious software

you see what permissions the app requests, you shoot yourself if you give a calculator access to your calendar, sms and contacts
and you can easily sniff what you app is sending to the big internet.
The biggest problem is that apps could steel your data!
I don't know if google scans the apps and how good they filters bad apps out! (Someone knows?)
lookout also a backdoor program that able to monitor ur mobile process. if im not wrong pls correct me & im sorry if im wrong. gameguard on those online game make me think this way xD
Hi,
I searched but couldn't find in this forum the answer of my question.
So, is an antivirus software necessary for Android? i can see a many of them on the market. But i don't want to install something that only "appears" do a lot of things but actually does nothing.
i personally think antivirus is essential, you have it for your pc right ? why not for your phone ? especially since android is open source, its easy for someone to make a virus and pretend its an amazing app.. even so our phones have everything on them.. contacts. passwords, personal info. email messages, saved bank details. i highly recommend antivirus for your phone.
i use lookout mobile security, its free ( or 30day free trial for pro ) and it scans every new app installed, it updates regularly, and best of all, if you ever lose your phone or have it stolen. you can go on to mylookout.com and block the phone / wipe all data / even track it down thru gps (even if gps is disabled ) all via your pc. its well worth it..
Thanks for the reply !
Actually i was wondering if Android is linux based, it could not be affected by a virus.
What you are talking about is more of a malware/spyware related problem (like stealing passwords, CC numbers etc.).
But if a software can prevent that kind of stuff , its well worth it.
Just wanted to know does Lookout mobile security makes your SGS( I am Assuming) slow ?
You can try avg pretty fast.

Sure it can be, the scale of viruses written for Linux is just smaller than is for Windows OS (imagine how many people use Windows), but since Android is growing at a really fast pace, I think that AV programs will be needed in the future if not now (at least for average users).

Not, that I have noticed it. It's pretty light weight...
I don't think so, not yet at least. Android is designed so that when you install apks or market apps, you are shown the permissions they require. This goes some way to helping you decide whether an app is trustworthy or not.
If in future, we get a spate of viruses/fake apps hitting android, then it might start becoming a standard feature. If you follow sites like xda or android websites daily, you will probably hear about any viruses before you even get the chance to download them (imo).
In the meantime, antivirus apps probably just reduce your battery life and performance...
No not at the moment. If your phone isnt rooted then apps wont have full access to system files, so in that sense i guess your protected to an extent.
If you only install apps from trusted sources then you should be fine. Perhaps over the coming months you may wish to implement a security solution as threats emerge more often.
Personally im awaiting a solution from ESET if ever. If it is somewhat similar to their desktop sloution but optimised for android then im hoping it will be just as light on resources. Avg just slows my phone right down. In any case im sure that you can expect a slight decline regarding phone performance with a security solution implemented.
every one has their own opinion, personally i cant see what harm it can do having a antivirus, lookout for me doesnt slow down my phone at all, and its reassuring knowing that all my apps get scanned regularly, some think its easy to get a virus, some say different, least if you do have an anti virus, you know your covered just incase,,, plus the extra benefits of lookout are superior...
Hmm.. Appreciate you all replying
As for AVG , i never trusted it to be working(on PC).So i am going to lookout for something else... like Lookout
Seems it is still a debatable issue that is an antivirus really effective on android platform.May be some hardcore developer can answer it more clearly.
I see some paid Antivirus softwares on market, can't make out there worth.
So the question still remains the same....Is an antivirus necessary on android ?
well looks like you will have to make your own conclusion on that one... there are free anti viruses out there, so you cant go wrong
hey i am using data with af wall plus with root & xposed
but still below apps are using data & cant restrict them ?
android OS
GOOGLE SERVICES
can any one suggest me xposed another mod to restrict these apps from using data ???
Please see screenshot & help me guyz !!
I'm assuming you mean afwall+, and you've configured those apps not to be allowed to agrees the internet yet somehow they do?
I use afwall myself since the days of my old note 2 and never had issues, but look into the following solutions, maybe they'll help :
A vpn style firewall, there's one listed in the xda labs app
Enable afwall xposed add-on, reboot, go to its settings and tick the fix download manager leak option
In afwall settings, your can enable the vpn control, then restrict those apps to vpn access only, maybe it'll help.
Can't think of any other options atm, i hope this helps you.

XPrivacy. You can restrict network permissions on both those apps and any other apps you want. Infact you can restrict pretty much any permission you want with Xprivacy.

Lightning wall
Check out this xposed firewall called LIGHTNING FIREWALL
valid alternative? not real alternative?
Did someone tried: PMP = protect my privacy ?
available from the playverse and selected stores near you.
Afwall+ with it's granularity is a powerful tool.
Xprivacy is a strong and brillant project with a community.
So back -for sure for me- to the opening question: PMP is good for the phone (and the "my" that's in the phone)? Is flexible enough to fully control all the little happy apps running around in the phone...?

For the data leakages the answer in post #2 by @ticktock666 is the way to go.
But for that to work in a proper mode: check that afwall+ has all the rights from the start (the veryvery start)...
Also afwall+ gives the users a pretty fine granularity when it comes to the rules.
..or did you noticed (captured? logged?) data leaks in other moments of your device work-day?
(es.: on wifi? on data? during the switch from one to the other? a single app? a sequence of apps? our beloved playframe-g-whatever?)

These two are in my next "round robin test".
Good testing and Keep us informed.

NetGuard?
How do you detect leaks? Do you disconnect Wi-Fi/mobile data on reboot?

I don't see any screenshot.... What I use is Xprivacy Pro because it can restrict any Android permissions, and it lets you know what permissions were used, and when. It can be used to show application usage data, and parameters used by data. However pro version of Xprivacy is required for those features. I would really recommend it, but I know it's a lot to take in at first. If you don't know much about Androids, and how they work, then it's probably not for you. There are detailed instructions on how to use it properly.
You can find the the developer's detailed help page here - https://github.com/M66B/XPrivacy#xprivacy
The XDA community forum on Xprivacy is here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/xprivacy-ultimate-android-privacy-app-t2320783
I hope that this helps you out. Good luck, and I hope you figure it out.
Best of luck to you....
Totall noob here to xda,
Is there anyway to basically delete everything and straight up use a google pixel/stock android rom? I want to de-samsungize my phone as much as I can basically lol.
Hi and welcome to XDA!
Unfortunately, the answer is no.
You could unlock, Root, and use a custom rom that has the Pixel experience.... That would require a lot of this forums reading and understanding on your part!
Btw, nice avatar! Cheers

the only roms that exist currently are GSI roms, those are not 100% compatible with all of the hardware features.
you can for now disable a lot of but not all pre-loaded apps. you can put apps you don't like into deep sleep, you can limit their use of background data and usage stats. you could change your launcher from the play store, you can alter the scale of the screen rendering from developer options without root.
I've never looked in there, but the Samsung store has themes, maybe one of those can better mimic stock android !?
Just got my first Mi device (11 ultra) on China rom. Anyone having problems refreshing outlook? I had changed all permissions to allow and still no dice. I also cannot find a way to disable the privacy protection all together, any hints? cheers
Answering my own question after going through all settings. Solved with turning on unrestricted data in special app access. I'd still love to get rid of this privacy protection though. It's too heavy
Thanks for sharing the findings .
This can be proven useful with other apps as well
Cheers !
