Help Xperia Z1s Status Bar Turns Grey in Settings/Dialer - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

No idea what has caused this... but when I enter settings it goes from Black (nova launcher) or transparent (stock xperia) to a dull gray.
Thanks in advance.

I should also not the the bar along the bottom with the back, home, and app switcher buttons turns the same color.

It has always been like this for me on stock.

Not a dark grey, but a lighter dull flat grey on top and bottom.
Does it change color when you enter settings from the stock launcher?

This is really stressing me out. Whether I messed something up or it was like that all along... it looks horrible.
Is there a way to change android settings menus (as well as the notification bar/bottom button bar) to black and get rid of this horrible white/grey theme that doesn't involve an unlocked bootloader? I'm hoping to find an easy fix for this once root is available.

Same thing on my phone, if you use nova launcher to change the bar color it works except in sonys custom settings, which probably means the color of the bars there is handled different hence why nova launcher can't change it. Would probably need something like a custom rom/root or maybe 4.4 to do this.

This is stock and normal. You're like the third person I've seen complaining about this today? I don't understand why it's a problem.

Uh yeah.. It's supposed to do that.

Honestly it's not a problem aside from the fact that it's unsightly. I was afraid messed something up.
So even without nova it would still turn grey?

Yep, this is controlled by the Dialer and Settings APKs - you won't be able to change it without modifying those APKs or a custom ROM/app which supports forcing status bar colors. I'm not too involved in that stuff, though, so that's about as much of a jumping off point as I can give you.
To be honest, I didn't even notice it until people started getting excited about. Different folks...

I think it's simply a case of the status bar/button panel (whatever it's called) blending the default black color with the white-ish background of the app. I assume it's just the application of translucency and alpha blending. Change the bgcolor of those apps, probably goes away. Maybe there are some other white-background apps to prove that theory.

Good catch. I replaced stock Messaging with 8sms to fix group threading. 8sms doesn't have the gray bars, even with the light theme, but stock Messaging definitely does.

[App] Inverted Gmail Updated 12-29-10

This is a modded version of the Nexus S Gmail app that was originally here posted by idkwhothatis123.
In this version the message window is also black with white text. It also has some sweet changes to check boxes, mini message headers, and menu icons done by dreamsforgotten that give it a nice clean look.
It runs great on my Epic on a stock deodexed DK-28, and it also runs well on my wife's Droid1.
Just flash the zip through CWM.
12-29-10
I changed the "read" message color to a dark grey. Quoted text is grey instead of purple so it's a lot easier to read.
Hope you guys like it!
Here it is. You guys are awesome, I'm gonna try it now and if it works i'm going to include in the update to Mysterious Beast.

so rad. thank you.
Glad you're liking it guys! I've been wanting this so bad!
Now we need to start on an inverted Gtalk. I may start working with it tonight.
Now the g-talk is something I ben wanting .. Wish it had color options with each friend.. that'll be nice

I was thinking about that too. I think that would be a tough one to pull off though.
Thanks! The best one out there. Would be even better if you could implement the Show images always on mod to this.
Just an idea to throw out there -- anyone else feel like the "marked Read" email should be black and the Unread should be Grey (since the Black is the base and the grey is the highlight.. in my mind)?
Thx again for posting this awesomeness.
I agree with ya. I was looking at it last night and that shade of grey is just too light for my taste. After I get xmas over with I'm going to get to work on it.
I'm thinking a dark charcoal grey for "read" and black for "unread". Or switch them all together. Look for a change in a couple days.
I'll look into the show images mod too. I'm not familiar with it but look at it.
I'm excited to see you got the email view to show black also!
You are amazing! Thank you!
This is great my only issue is with the Links like url's and e-mail addresses are very hard to read as the color is a dark blue, anyway to change this? maybe a lighter blue or grey?

I agree %100. I'm going to get to work on it as soon as th crazyness of the holidays are over.
The problem with the color for links is that the framework that dictates those colors. Changing the framework will change it "globally" and would make it look goofy in other apps. I'm going to play with it a bit and see if I can do something with it in the app alone though.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to do it, by all means pm me and I'll be happy to try it!
I am definitely going to change quoted text color, the "read" messages color, and few other things.

That sounds like an error message that launcher pro gives when shortcut is there, but no application. Make sure the zip was completely downloaded, and that the flash didn't give u an error afterwards.

Day one with HTC one

Hi all,
I'm coming from and SGSII and I'm in the process of trying to setup my One how I like it. There's a few things troubling me though.
-The blacks of the screen don't seem especially black and it seems there's no way to adjust the contrast. The whole screen seems a bit flat/grey
-The menus are black text on white, I much prefer the white on black of the SII
-The scroll 'brakes' too quickly as your finger comes off the screen, it's like sliding something on sandpaper as opposed to ice. There's no 'mega scroll' flick
-I've had to download a task manager killer but I cannot end google+, gmail and googlemaps. I don't want them.
-The icons on my SII are a lot better
-I'd like the notification bar to be black
-On the SII I have gps switched off but weather apps still work, with the HTC gps has to be on.
-I'm going to have to root this phone to get adfree aren't?
I'm using nova launcher so a lot of things are similar but those things above are really bugging me. I've googled all of them and had no luck so let me know if I'm missing anything.
Thanks.
I didn't read your whole post but to get white text on black you are going to have to go with an inverted Rom, like d3rp or 42One I am sure there are others but those two come to mind.

Thanks, I might hold off on rooting for a while.
The main thing I wanted to check was that I wasn't missing an obvious settings and that the screen was working properly, it's VERY flat and grey compared to my SII.
Overall it's doing a good job but the screen is going to have to take some getting used to.

This is the difference between AMOLED and LCD. The contrast on the One is pretty much the best available on a phone LCD, but it is still an LCD, and cannot match the black levels of AMOLED.
-The menus are black text on white, I much prefer the white on black of the SII
The menus on the SII are white on black because white is a very expensive color to display, battery-wise, on an AMOLED screen. Inverted roms, or themes, will fix this for you.
-The scroll 'brakes' too quickly as your finger comes off the screen, it's like sliding something on sandpaper as opposed to ice. There's no 'mega scroll' flick
Depends on the app you're using. If you're speaking about within Sense (settings, app drawer, etc) then yeah I guess, but I'm not sure why you would need the long scrolling in such short lists.
-I've had to download a task manager killer but I cannot end google+, gmail and googlemaps. I don't want them.
Uninstall/disable them via settings>apps or kill them with an app.
-The icons on my SII are a lot better
rofl

Theme

You had to root your S2 to get that too.

Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated. Much as I feared the about the screen. It's a shame, I do really like OLED. Those are the two big things now, the screen and lack of centre button. It's stupid because most apps now have a black bar at the bottom which takes up about 10% of the screen for the 'options' button. A button would be much better. If it had those two things it would be the perfect phone in my eyes.
Makes sense about the menus, I checked out the 42One rom and it looks pretty good. I spent yesterday getting everything set up so I'm going to wait to root and flash.
The scroll/flick behaviour is a bit different but some lists do have a 'mega-scroll' so that was me I guess, I'd still prefer it if it was a bit looser.
I found the only option was to disable certain apps, I guess I won't be able to get into removing stuff until I root the phone.
Maybe I should have said i don't like the stock icons, I still prefer the SII one but have since downloaded some icon packs so we're all good there.
On my journeys I saw someone had written a little program to guide you through rooting your phone so I'll have to find that again. I'd also like to backup my stock setup in case of warranty issues further down the line.
Thanks again.

You can use the HTC Logo as menu button. But you'd need a custom kernel that supports that.
AMOLED displays are usually very over saturated compared to IPS LCD displays. But IPS will give you a more accurate color and truer whites and blacks.

The HTC logo doesn't have a capacitive sensor, the "logo button" feature actually uses the first row of pixels immediately above the logo as a button.
Not trying to attack anyone here, just want to make sure that the information is explained a bit more.

Yep, it's the tradeoff you made when you picked LCD.
If its any consolation, displaying white on your S2 actually caused the display consumption to go up drastically (sometimes double the power required) while on LCD the screen uses a much more consistent amount of power. The whites on your One -should- appear as truer whites, while yes, the black will be more washed out.

Useful to know, thanks!
Thanks for the input, being brand new to HTC I'm still learning what's available.
Ideally I like Nova so I'd like to keep that. I'd like the general menus to be white text on black BG, I can clean things out with Titanium and stop ads with adfree.
From what I can tell I'm going to need to root the phone and then install a rom.
Are there 'pre-optimized' roms? Are there any Roms which are basically stock except for the colour flip? Can I get 4.3 in there as well? That middle button would be great too. My SII came with swype, I miss that.
I've found instructions on rooting but a little unsure which rom to go for, konfuzion's suggestion of 42One looks ok but I don't know what's out there, supported and up to date.
If you have any more thoughts they're always welcome
I'm gonna need some help on this guys.
I'm in the UK on the EE network, can I download any rom or do I need a specific 'EE' one?
Do I need a rom if I just want superuser privileges and a reversed/inverted menu? (also be able to install titanium backup and adfree)
I think I can handle the rest of it.
Thanks.
Well you most likely have a gsm one so you wouldn't want to flash anything in the sprint one section. And seeing as your gsm i believe there are a few roms over there that are 4.3

Nexus 6 Amoled Display Artifacts [THREAD CLOSED]

I've had my Nexus for only 2 days and I've noticed some artifacts on my display. I've included screenshots using Screen Test app which show some horizontal lines on my display and also vertical lines but these are more vivid on the device itself they don't seem to show so much in the screenshots. These lines are visible regardless of what I use as wallpaper. Anyone else having this issue or is this normal?? Will this clear up over time or do I need to send it in for an RMA??

LMFAO....
Ok, so because you are obviously clueless about the distinction between hardware and software, any visual artifact caused by the AMOLED display **CAN NOT** appear on a screenshot.
Those lines you are seeing are due to the DITHERING algorithm used to generate the gradient that you are displaying. Gradient = the progression from white to black through multiple degrees of gray. This is a function of SOFTWARE, not hardware. RMA will do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for this.
I understand there are different gradients, this is different, what I'm seeing is lines gradient or not but they are obvious even when not using the screen test app, they are visible everywhere at anytime doesn't matter what background or wallpaper I'm using. There are vertical lines also that look like they are baked into the screen.
Well then send it for an RMA? i dont see what your purpose of this post was, to ask if its normal to have baked in horizontal lines? its not.
i dont see any lines on my display, so i would sent it back for a replacement. i guess i was one of the lucky few with a device with no issues, the only issue i found was that i did not get any lollipop with the device, see here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/missing-lollipop-nexus-6-t3046877

I definitely cant see anything on the screenshot. As for the camera photos, its tricky because they are a little pixelated, probably due to the contrast.

I think it might be a good idea to go to an optometrist to make sure that the lines aren't caused by your eyes.
Your going to have these vertical lines had them on all amoled screens. But if your seeing them on say like your home screen and other places I'd get a replacement. But if you only see them say with just a white or gray screen I wouldn't worry about it. If you want you can try this app out on Google play... Amoled burn in fixer.. Good day
Thanks for your comments guys, I believe I do have an issue with my display therefore will proceed with a DOA replacement. Cheers

You can use ultimate dynamic navbar pro to do this. I currently have my navbar transparent. Also, it expands your desktop when you make your navbar transparent so you really do have more screen real estate. Unfortunately, it won't let me post the link for it but you can find it in the play store

Bro we are asking for a STOCK navbar with a transparent background meaning that black covering the text behind the buttons is gone. Just as it would be on the homescreen and recents menu lol.

I understand that lol. The navbar I posted is UNB's basic theme but is customizable if you purchase it and can be transparent. It's obviously not a stock hack or anything but I was confirming it's an identical solution that works for 5.1, assuming you're rooted.

I bought it awhile back, didn't do what I wanted an had 4.4 Navbar icons didn't enjoy it.
Using layers the customize my Navbar icons.
Guys, is there something new? I also want to disable the black color behind the buttons
woookay now.
1 : The devs don't owe us, anything. They can build whatever the hell they want. Plus, most roms now are some sort of kang of another. Why else would most roms have pertty much the same features then?
2: This is all on the assumption that apps don't theme the navbar, and that they have coded the app to display at where the navbar is. I've done a fully transparent status and navbar build for my nexus 4 and while it works fine on launcher, it would bug out with artifacts when using other apps or it just returned to grey.
BUT, devs are amazing so they could probably make this work. However, there are much more important things to be done before modifying on the looks of android. So please, just be patient or try and do it yourself.
Obviously you guys don't feel the way I do.... I hate the navbar. I don't use it. Such a waste of screen. Have you tried something good like pie or an alternative to the navbar? I'd suggest that. But to each his/her own.

It looks like a burn in but it dissapears in the app drawer and is visible on a screenshot. Got it like a month or so ago. Only visible against a black background.
Any ideas what it could be?

It would be much easier to spot any problem with your display with a uniform dark background. The current black background with non uniform white patches is a bad choice.
Here is my own. It cant be a burn in as its visible in the screenshot and disaperes if i watch a video, look in my gallery ect. Only visible on homescreen.

So you have to download ANOTHER app, just to mask an issue, which can be truly fixed by using a different wallpaper? That makes no sense.

What? "Another app" implys you've downloaded one in the first place
I think your mistaken in thinking his wallpaper has the gradient actually in the image, it does not. It happens with any black wallpaper !
This has been happening as long as I can remember on my Sammy devices... It does not effect live wallpapers therefore you set your wallpaper with a live wallpaper app that lets you choose your own image.
That's all

Sorry if I misunderstood. You linked an app to download, soci assumed you were saying he needed to download an app to his device.
I have a Galaxy S7 Edge, two S8 pluses, and the Note8 I'm using right now. I actually have a black wallpaper on it now, and no distortion or funny light.
As I said it's his wallpaper.

OP hope you see the fix and no need to worry about your screen being damaged. Cya
Wait.
Are they talking about the gradient looking thing at the top of the screen? That's normal for the statusbar to do that. There's an app called L Speed (for rooted devices) that lets you disable it since it's a RAM flag that creates that effect.
If it was screen burn-in, we wouldn't be able to see it in a screenshot, lol (which they do, but because it's software related, baked into the phone's settings).
