Kindle Fire HD ver 11.3.1.0
Rooted
For some reason every book reader app ive tried crashes the kindle. At least i think its a crash. It basically goes down like this..
- start kindle
- start up my book reader (tried moonreader+, aldiko book reader) now using calibre on pc to convert books to mobi
- read book for around 40 minutes or so then it restarts itself
- wait for it to finish starting back up
- read but this time it crashes quicker
- kindle restarts and repeat the process
- keeps resetting quicker and quicker and eventually i just stop reading
This only happens when trying to read books. It also seems to trigger the crash in the future. If i was to open a reader, close it and play a game or something eventually the kindle will restart. Games never crash my kindle but only if i open a book reader first it seems to crash it eventually.
Would a bad root or bad books cause this? The kindles sleep setting is set to disabled and ive tried different book readers then finally settling on calibre and just converting them from epub to mobi. Also tried using that wakelock app and it does nothing.
What sucks is my wife wanted a kindle so bad for reading books and the kindle does EVERYTHING else except book reading
Also i just realized if i were to go into the settings menu and just leave it there, eventually it would restart itself the same way it does with books but im not sure if its the same thing cause i had it charging when that happened.

Enticed by the 1.8 Million books and claim of free books I installed the Kobo reader on my rooted NC.
The app loads and you can browse books in the catalog BUT when you try to open a free book or a preview of a book to purchase the app crashes out.
It seems to work fine on my Droid X so this seems to be a Nook-ism....I wonder if the screen size is an issue?
Anyone else tried this or had any luck?
thanks
Chris
I had a ereader that used kobo before we got the nook. I just downloaded the app so we could use the books we had already bought with them. I can see my books on the shelf, but it still says "waiting to download" and never does.. i hope somebody can help us with this.
Kobo
I had the same problem on my Rooted Nook Color.
Kobo loaded and then showed "waiting for download" on each of the books (I have about 65 or so).
I rebooted my Nook to make sure there was nothing hung; then I ran the program and let it sit for about an hour. When I cam back to check on it, it was just finishing the last of the books.
Now it works just fine, and new books download into it with any delay. I am not sure what the problem is when it first downloads your library; but I got tired of quitting the program and decided to let it run as long as it wanted to.
Good luck!
It downloaded my books and then mentioned they are working on the issue. I downloaded a preview and it opens and then immediatly crashes back to my library.
I did a reboot, log out log back in and remove and reinstall. Still have same issue.
I logged a support ticket to see what they say but I am guessing it could be related to the screen size OR it requiring a unique hardware ID i.e. phone number for account/licensing purposes.
If I hear back from Kobo will post anything of interest here.

Re: the downloads hanging, mine worked after I did a "clear local data" and re-inserted my microSD card. I'm guessing it stores books on the card.
I still can't open books though. Same error as above.
Update: The app still doesn't work, but if you connect your NookColor to your computer via USB, you can copy your Kobo books from Adobe's Digital Editions software. You will first need to go to your Kobo account on their website, download the book into Adobe Digital editions. Then connect your NookColor to your computer via USB. Once it is recognized, open Adobe Digital Editions. It should find your NookColor. Authorize the Nook, then you can drag and drop books from ADE into your NookColor's icon on the left. They work fine in the B&N ebook library. No pretty covers, though, at least on the ones I copied over.
Having this problem too after trying to read a book I bought at Borders.com. Any workaround to get Kobo to work or is the Adobe software trick still the way to go?
I created a book from a PDF using Calibre. The book works fine in that program, but I can't seem to figure out how to get Google Books on my XOOM to find it. For that matter, I can't even find the books that are already loaded when I browse the folders on my computer. I created a folder called Books and dropped it in there, but there isn't a way to browse the XOOM file folders from Google Books to find it.
How would I go about making this work?
Thanks!
Why not use Aldiko?

Aldiko seems to have problems with the margins since it's unable to get rid of the notification bar. Fbreader works okay, but it doesn't work with font formatting.
use the nook app, it works perfect
You can fix the margin issue in Aldiko and it works great after that. I would still like to find where the Google Book app stores books just like so many other people here but until then Aldiko works just fine.

It stores the books here Data/Data/com.google.android.apps.books/
But I dont know what format its in, or how to convert an ebook into that format.
Nook app works great, except for a few things.
It force closes randomly when switching screens, but never really closes. lol
It keeps forcing portrait mode for some screens, which is frustrating.
It's just not as pretty as the Google Books app!
But it did the trick, I suppose.
I can see the /data (I'm using Astro file manager to browse) folder but mine is empty eventhough I have pinned one of the books already and chose to make it available offline so I can find it. Is there anything else I need to do to see /data/data? What format are the books in?

How? If I put the margins under 50, the top line gets cut off at the top. I'd rather put it edge to edge.
I use 70 for margin and 16 font size
Coolreader
I'd strongly recommend Coolreader (https://market.android.com/details?id=org.coolreader). it gives you lot more options to customize the reading experience
Can not load your own books with Google Books
Just an FYI. Google books does not offer the feature to add your own books. You have to use another e-reader app. I like Aldiko, because you and can add your Adobe digital editions to it.
I've been using Aldiko for a few years now and love it. I've never had a problem with it using my own Calibre and eCub books on several different devices.
However, I've been looking for another app that will sync my bookmark so that I can continue to read on another device from where I left off on my previous device. I have a CM7 Nook that I read in bed, but would like to read the same book during the day from my G2 and then carry on that night on the Nook again.
I've heard Aldiko is looking into this, while Kindle and Nook 'already' have this. My problem is that I've never been able to sideload using either app. I suspect this was a 'feature' in earlier versions but I haven't been able to do it using the latest versions.
I'd love to see Google Books allow sideloading and will standby for that (or Aldiko), whichever comes first and really does work!

The top line cuts off in Aldiko for me too. This was very disappointing, as I really enjoyed the app on my phones.
Moon+ Reader seems to show epubs properly and it has a good night mode, so that's my reader for now. Hopefully Aldiko optimizes for Honeycomb soon.
I use Aldiko and kindle on my phone. But on the Xoom I have been using kindle and Nook. I had no problem sideloading all of my epubs into Nook. Nook does a much nicer job than Aldiko on the Xoom, especially in landscape.

This should be stickied somewhere. You just made my ereader app of choice usable again. TY!!
anyone know why I can't change the margins on a pdf I loaded? One of the samples that came with the app allows for adjusting the margins, but not the PDF I loaded. The only thing that appears in Settings is Brightness and Orientation. Please help, thanks!
That's just the nature of a PDF - it's static. Zooming is all you can do.

If you're not rooted, you won't be able to see the contents of the data folder.
Nook
I'm using Nook for this. All you need to do is drop the epub file in the My Documents folder under the Nook directory.
Hey all -
Got the Nook Color for the wife for mothers day, put the downloaded ZIP to upgrade the STOCK...
Is there a way to just add the Kindle app? wife has a metric ton of kindle books. she definitely needs to keep the kindle books...
Without rooting, I don't think you'll be able to get that app on there.
You could go get calibre and hunt around the internet and convert the kindle books to epub format.
Hello. I'm running cm10.1 and using the latest YouTube app.
After watching several videos perfectly and say using another app for a while, when I go back to YouTube, it doesn't load any video. It loads the description and suggestions but not the video. I tried restarting the WiFi and clearing the data of the YouTube app but only rebooting the tablet fixes it.
Any ideas?
This is the error
YouTube (20804): MediaPlayer error during playback [what=1, extra=-2147483648]
Did your ROM come with host time ad-blocking? Mine did and certain videos wouldn't load until I cleared my hosts file... Actually it was just about any video in HD.

No, hosts file is clean.
Actually I can load literally any video for a while and after approx. half an hour I cannot load any video.
I am planning on buying this (FIRE) tablet for reading books . But recently I came to know that kindle doesn't support epub format. As you know epub is probably the best extension for books.:laugh: I am now in a fix that if I can use moon+reader pro to read such formatted books or not.
can anyone assure me? :angel::angel:
Thanks in Advance.
If you are on 5.01 you can install the Google Play store and then will have access to install Fbreader which does work on the tablet for epub format books. I can't confirm about moon reader as I've never used it but fbreader does work. Amazon app store will say fbreader isn't compatible but it does work.
There is also Aldiko, which is the best book reader app for Android IMHO.
Along the same lines, has anybody had this problem?
I have Nova Launcher installed as my default launcher (not sure if this is part of the issue or not) and the book reader app (whatever variation of the Kindle App is installed) is unable to see any .mobi files that I have sideloaded into the kindle folder.

It can if you put them in the kindle folder in the system memory, not on a card. All my books I can read.
Thanks for the reply - I have actually put them in the kindle folder ... they are just not being seen by the kindle app. I think that I am just going to have to restore / re-setup the tablet and see if it still happens. I might have tweaked something somewhere and can't remember what it is / was.

I'm having the same problem. I have a bunch of mobi files and it's only showing 2 in the library.
If I open any of the other mobi files from a file viewer it opens the files just fine in the Kindle app. However it won't save reading position etc because the book is not in the library. Highly annoying!
The Kindle app in the Play store does not have this issue. I tried replacing the built in Kindle app with the one from the Play store but didn't manage to do it. Even when I delete the original Kindle app and sideload the APK it crashes and launch.
I use Calibre to convert them to mobi. So far, so good.
Moonreader
Moonreader supports all ebook formats. Is easy to use and has night mode.
I have moved on to the Cyanogenmod 5.1 and am using the official Kindle App now so I haven't had any problems recently - having said this, it started working at some point (registering my .mobi files in the app) but I can't explain why it happened.
+1 for Calibre (run on computer) to convert ebooks to/from different formats.
