[Q] Nook extremely slow unless running ROM from SD - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hoping that someone might be able to give me some insight and/or direction.
I've been running CM 10.2 off EMMC for a while now. I started having some issues with slowness and I was interested in CM 11, so I put CM 11 on an SD card so I could dual boot. CM 11 ran well. CM continued to run worse and worse. Bluetooth would timeout, web browser was extremely slow...it was pretty unbearable.
CM 11 ran like a dream so I decided to put CM 11 on EMMC. After I did so, it ran just like 10.2 did. It took 10 - 20 minutes just to get through setup. Gmail would timeout (and reboot) when it tried to sign-in. Apps wouldn't load. I would click on buttons and it would take 1 -2 minutes for the the NOOK to respond.
When I put CM 11 on, I did a factory reset (a couple of times).
So, I decided to put stock back in...without CWM...pure stock. Well, it is still slow. Booting from SD card runs fine.
Any ideas what could be wrong? I'm running pure stock now, so I could take it to B&N, but I don't remember when I purchased it. I'm not sure they would do anything.
I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Yes, you are suffering from LAG and need to run TRIM to fix it. But be careful as these devices with certain internal chips can be bricked running TRIM.

In the updated 01/18 CM 10.2, Verygreen re-enabled Trim. So can I install that update if my device has the faulty chip? Thank in advanced for your answer

Thanks. I was running CM 10.2 with the trim-enabled kernel. Also, I had completely wiped /data and all the caches.
I noticed in settings (which took forever to load) it said I had used about 10 gigs or so...which I thought shouldn't be the case if I had formated /data and did a factory reset from CWM. I did a hard reset with factory restore and now things are moving along well.
Do you still think it was the LAG issue? I thought that formatting /data and /cache would fix the LAG (also I thought running the trim-Kernel would fix it too. Perhaps TRIM didn't have a chance to run because I've been dual booting? Although the reason I went to the dual boot was because of the slow issue.
I don't know...perhaps I reflashed a 10.2 ROM and forgot to flash the Kernel, but I've been on the same 10.2 rom for a while.
Either way...things seem to be working now...but now I have to start from scratch to get CM 11 on EMMC.
Thanks for the response!

There's a thread over in Android Development that discusses the TRIM related issues. It seems the only chip effective is rev. 5 (if I remember). I believe I have the rev. 6 and have been running the trim enabled kernel since last October or November. Sorry my memory is so faulty. If you need me to, I'll find my chip again (have to wade through the very long 10.2 thread to see what the command is since I've forgotten).

Some people say it is safe to do. I have tried it myself with no issues. You have to ask yourself if your device gets bricked can you afford to replace it? If no don't do it.

Your issue was you did not really FORMAT /data with those CWM commands. Because the HD/HD+ uses an emulated internal sdcard (/data/media), it only ERASES part of /data keeping the media files intact. So all of your earlier media files remained even after CWM /data format and factory reset commands. The only way to really format /data is to go to mounts and storage in CWM and format 'data and datamedia'. Then it really FORMATS all of /data (including your media files in /data/media) and gets rid of lag. Of course your hard reset and factory restore did that too.

Okay. That makes sense, although I wasn't aware of that behavior. Guess running TRIM manually would have fixed my issue. It took a while, but I have CM 11 running now. Thanks for all your work on that. It seems much faster than 10.2.

Hello XDA community let me start by saying thank you for sharing all this great info. I finally made the decision to install over my B&N HD OS and go full Droid using cm-10.1-20130615-UNOFFICIAL-hummingbird-emmc. Its running like a damn beast BUT one little thing is irking me. Whenever I download an app/game EVERYTHING seems to go to the internal memory and not my freakin' empty 32gb micro sd :good:. Furthermore, I don't even see the option in apps to "move to sd". How can I remedy this issue?
P.S- Yes the Sd card is formatted correctly and can be seen in storage.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Apps2Sd is not supported in CM10.1.
And verygreen has the emmc version of CM10.1 set to use internal memory by default and there is no setting to change that. But I have developed a flashable zip that will swap internal and external SD's so that the default goes to external. See my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and look at item 4.

Is this fairly reliable ? I purchased a 32GB model, thinking I would need it but, after 2 weeks I am hardly using any space. Perhaps I should return and get a 16GB model instead...

I don't get any reboots, but many users do. I think it depends on what apps you have installed and which run in the background that might be causing the crash and reboot.

Hey Leapinlar I tried your advice and I'm not getting any results. Here is exactly what I did.
1. Boot into CWM wiped the system and cache
2. installed cm-10.1-20130624-UNOFFICIAL-hummingbird-emmc
3. installed NookHD-HDplus-SDSwap-for-verygreen-CM10.1-on-emmc-rev2-(06.16.13).zip
4. Boot into cm-10 went into settings then storage (Verified MicroSD is detected 29gb)
5. Installed HD Widgets and it automatically goes to the Internal Storage
Am I doing something wrong? Please tell me I am lol...
I also do a reboot and try again but no luck. Any other advice? Maybe something I can do manually?

The swap does not effect where things get installed. They will always get installed to internal memory. The swap only effects where apps download and save their media files.
If you are running out of room to install apps, delete or move some of the media files from internal memory. App installation files and internally stored media files share the same free space. If you get rid of some internal media files, more apps can be installed.

[Q] Performance Issues on both Stock and CM10.1 ROMs

Hi There
I got my Nook HD+ a couple of months ago, and I've started noticing quite a bit of slowdown in Apps, in particular getting a lot of "xxx isn't responding, do you want to close it - Wait/OK messages.
I've installed various tools to monitor CPU/memory etc but not been able to. Running Cleanmaster to clear memory and caches sometimes seems to give some brief respte, but not for long> I also used Malwarebytes AV and found a trojan dialler, and removal of that againseemed to help for a little while, but the problems came back a few hours later.
I therefore decided to give the CM ROM a try and installed 10.1, and which I really like the interface and woul dlike to carrry on using it, it would seem that the problem is even worse on this version of Android. The basic laucher itself isn't too bad, but applications are barely usable, which initially made me wonder if I've got a hardware problem.
I'm using a Kingston 8GB memory card (I did read somewhere that somebody else had problems with speed on a similar SD card, but as far as I'm aware Kingston should be a decent brand)
I've been reading through the forums about the trim issue, and it would appear I have the MAGDA eMMC which is suseptible to the trim bug, here are the details on my version:
$ su
# cd /sys/class/block/mmcblk0/device
# cat name
MAG2GA
# cat manfid
0x000015
# cut -b 19,20 cid
6
# cat date
10/2012
There seems to be a fair amount of debate about wwhether it's safe to try the fstrim fix along with 10.2 on this version of the chip. I'm also wondering if pulling the SD card and trying a hard reset might be worth trying.
Would anybody be able to to offer me some guidance on whether this is likely to be the trim issue, and whether I'm safe to try fstrim/Lagfix?
I have tried to read up as much as I can before posting, but there's a lot of information and I'm not entirely sure how much of it is currently in date, so I'm still not entirely certain whether this is what's affecting me, and what the best course of action from here is. Apologies in advance therefore if this has been covered elsewhere.
Thanks very much in advance.
Alex.
It does sound like you are experiencing LAG and are in need of trim. But you have the buggy emmc chip and I would not recommend it. Try booting to your CWM SD and going to mounts and storage and format 'data and datamedia'. See if that helps. An ordinary factory reset does not really format /data and will not make it better. That is why you still had LAG after installing CM10.1.

Thanks very much for the reply.
I've booted back into CWM, and the Mounts and Storage menu gives me the option of mounting or formatting several partitions:
/sytem
/cache
/emmc
/data
/sdcard
There doesn't look to be an option for "Format data and datamedia" however (I get the impression this should be a distinct option?).
I tried formatting just /data, after doing so and booting back into CM it started to run through the initial setup. The CWM version I'm using is v6.0.3.2.
A bit of further googling suggests that /data/media is hosted on /sdcard, but if I navigate through the filesystem it looks like my personal data from the stock install is /emmc, but I'm a bit wary of formatting this in case it affects the stock ROM. Coudl this be what I should be formatting instead?

Are you running CM10.1 on SD? I thought you replaced stock with CM10.1 on emmc. That was my basis for saying you need to format 'data and datamedia'. It uses the same /data that stock used, thus carrying over the LAG problem. An SD install puts /data on the SD (unless you used the hybrid SD install which then does use the same /data partition on emmc).
And I am not talking about /data/media. I am talking about 'data and datamedia'. That option actually formats all of /data including /data/media. A format /data with CWM does not "format" anything. It erases all of /data except /data/media, leaving your media files intact. An actual format is necessary to remove LAG.

Leap,
Thanks for this! I did format 'data and datamedia' and this fixed the lag I have been experiencing. I had to register w/CM and it reloaded some apps from Google play and I had to re-install other apps using Apps Back-up and Restore. Not ideal having re-install periodically (monthly?) in order to keep it running smoothly.
This proves to me that these tablets need TRIM. However, I have an HD+ 16GB with MAG2GA Date:11/2012, FwRev 0x06. Do you think it would be safe to try KitKat on SDcard or would that still subject my Nook to bricking?
BTW, Bought this on the Mother's Day deal so, still under warranty
Thank again,
josim

And the lag when running from SD is likely caused by the brand and class of your SD. It needs to be a SanDisk class 4.

To get around having to re-register and re-install everything, do a nandroid backup with CWM and after the format 'data and datamedia', do a CWM restore. That will put everything back but your media files. To save them, back them up manually to your SD or PC and manually restore them later. I know this is a pain to do but it is better than bricking your device.
And I don't know anything about kitkat on SD and trim. Even on SD some things are on emmc.

Right, understood. Sorry, when I made the original post I think I don't think I fully understood the purpose of the eMMC chip, obviously if it's running on a separate filesystem can't be the same problem. I've now got a Sandisk card on order, will give that a try next and go from there.

[Q] SD Install has bricked my HD+

I have an issue that seems to be similar to those suffered by a number of people. I'm just having difficulty understanding the cause of it, and the solution. I have a nook hd+ that no longer boots as a result of trying CM11 on an SD card.
I installed CM11 to an SD card (as I was nervous of altering my nook) using bokbokan's excellent instructions. Initially it seemed fine but this morning it was unexpectedly out of battery and will no longer boot.
The symptoms are similar to this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2611769, this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2736347 and this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2649061&page=2 except that the posters there had previously replaced the stock software and overwritten the emmc.
When the SD is in, it locks up on the Cyanoboot screen, when the SD card is out I only get to the black screen with 'Nook' on it and no further. It looks like the SD install has messed something up on the internal emmc. Hard resets and multiple failed boots don't appear to help.
I can occasionally (but not always) get it to reboot to CWM recovery by reinserting the card and holding down N and lock, but I get a lot of errors such as "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log", "W:failed to mount /dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.1/by-name/cache on /cache failed:No such file or directory" and "I:Can't partition non-vfat: /emmc (ext4)". When I go to 'Mounts and Storage' in CWM, I cannot mount anything (e.g. "Error mounting /boot!").
I chose to go down the SD card install route (using ) in order to avoid touching the stock install on the emmc, but now the whole thing is dead.
Reading other threads, it sounds like either:
1. The emmc is bricked due to some firmware bug. The impression I get from reading around is that CM11 was supposed to incorporate a workaround for the issue. If the emmc is the problem, I have to return the Nook and hope to get a working one.
2. The emmc has (somehow) become corrupted, I have to put a different version of CWM on my SDcard (so it will install to the EMMC rather than the SDcard, and because CM11 uses a different version), using the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35811322 and then reinstall a stock rom to my emmc. I then have to reregister the Nook (not sure if this is essential) before being able to use my CM11 SDcard install again.
If it is the first problem, I would like to know how I can check to see if the emmc is indeed broken.
If it is the second, I would be grateful for any help in understanding how and why the SD install has messed up the emmc, and whether the steps above are likely to bring it back to life.
It sounds like your emmc is indeed bricked. I would go for the warranty exchange now. Just because you installed CM11 to SD does not mean it does not use emmc partitions. It still accesses and uses many of them (cache, rom, bootdata, /data/media, etc.). So there is opportunity for a brick. I would exchange it now while the cyanoboot logo does not show when booting without the SD.

Thanks to both for replying. I feared that was the case.
I'm a bit disappointed that the SD card install (generally the option for those who want to leave the nook untouched) can in fact ruin the machine.
I've contacted the Nook website and will see what happens.

Just take your device to a store. They will exchange on the spot once they verify your registration on their computer. Of course don't tell them you were running CM, even on SD.

Thanks, but there are no BN stores in the UK. They don't even sell the Nook directly from their uk website anymore. I have to post it to the Netherlands and see what happens.
So, after 2 months, and a lot of arguing with customer services, I have finally got a replacement Nook through the post.
I am still keen to try CM, but want to be really sure that my Nook doesn't get bricked again. Is there any way of checking whether an sd card install is likely to trigger an emmc failure on my new Nook?

The best way to avoid bricking by CM11 is to not try CM11. I run CM 10.1.3 and have heard of no one bricking when running that.

[Q] Upgrading my ROM version

I haven't installed a recovery e.g. cwm.
Cheers
So what you are saying is you are running an early version of CM10.2 that does not have TRIM activated and you have started to get lag. You have the bad memory chip and are worried to run something newer with TRIM activated. So now you want advice about what is safe to run. You also still have stock recovery installed. Is this a correct interpretation?
I don't know the best answer for that. The stable CM10.2.1 is supposed to be safe, but I have no proof of that. I know a lot of users have reported bricked devices with CM11, with no explainable reason why. I suspect TRIM with the bad chip.
It is a tough question. Maybe someone else has some comments.

Exactly what I meant to say. Thanks for explaining it better leapinlar
I just had another thought. You say you do a factory reset and it helps temporarily. You might try going to mounts and storage in CWM and format 'data and datamedia'. That is a real format of /data. The factory reset and format /data does not really format /data. It erases the contents of /data except the /data/media folder where your emulated internal sdcard is. So it is an erase function rather than a format. Also some of your lag may be due to your media files. A clean real format of /data may help. Also format /cache, that is where your system dalvik cache files are stored and if you're are not factory reseting, you should do the cache separately.

Nook HD not charging since CM11 install
This morning I installed the latest CM11 build (M11) on my daughter's Nook HD. Prior to that I was using the stock ROM with no issues. Since installing the ROM the tablet will not charge; rather than showing an orange light the device shows a green light whenever the charger is connected.
It seems possible that my cable has failed at the same time as performing the install, though a little unlikely.
Thank you for your help.
CM11 - TI OMAP drivers going to get updated?
As seen here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-hd/general/updated-ti-omap-video-driver-sluggish-t2912381
Just curious if we'll see these get rolled in...
Thanks for all the hard work!
I updated my Nook HD+ from CM 11 snapshot 10 to 11 OTA , now there is frequent automatic-touches or ghost-touches on the screen without me touching the screen. Any help?
Newbie Questions - B&N HD+
Hi - i am going to flash my B&N HD+ for the first time. i have been reading the forums and instructions and have few questions.
i want to do this without SD card (i can go buy one but i if not needed, i prefer not to use it). is this possible? in the EMMC thread, i still see that the SD card must be used for the flashing/booting. so essentially, to flash CWM 6046, is it possible to not use SD card? and if so, can someone tell me how to do that?
Thanks
Ali

No, you must use an SD. There is no other way. And I suggest you use the dummies guide linked in my signature.

NookHDVolumeAdjuster for CM11 or CM10.2 ?
Is there a version of NookHDVolumeAdjuster that runs under CM11 or CM10.2 ? I am using version 1.0 under CM10.1.3. When I tried CM10.2, the sliders were all stuck at the far left. I need the sound higher volume, so I can't upgrade to CM10.2 or CM11. thanks.
Image Links?
Links to the intial sdcard image and recovery image in the original "[Q&A][Nook HD/HD+] EMMC CM11 install - updated 08/17" post are broken (nook.rootshell.ru appears down, from my perspective). Are these available elsewhere?
Thanks.

You can go to the dummies guide linked in my signature. In post 7 of that thread is everything you need for running CM11 on the HD/HD+.

Nook HD plus and Gapps error status 6
Good morning,
I was working on flashing my nook last night with
cwm-recovery-ovation-6.zip
cm-20141224-NIGHTLY-ovation.zip
I have tried many different versions of stock, modular-full, modular-mini and gets a status code 6, I have successfully flashed gapps-kk-20140606-signed, but when I try to use it, the playstore just hangs like it is loading. Can someone advise the steps I need to take to successfully install a working version of gapps?
I have tried factory wiping several times and flashing the various versions of GAPPS.
Thanks in advance for any assistance that you provide.

I'd suggest that you try resetting the Google Playstore app: go to Settings->Apps->Google Playstore, and do a "force stop" and "clear data" (after which you'll need to re-enter your Google (Gmail) account login/passwd).
CM11 M12 - Device Temperature
Hi all,
After staying around on CM10.2 for a long time due to a few issues with earlier snapshots of CM11, I've decided to upgrade to M12. Finding it runs great on everything I'm doing - definitely smoother performance. One thing I am concerned about is the temperature hike of my tablet, particularly when charged and running a game (in this instance, Terraria). Is anyone finding the back running quite hot? Can feel it on the screen and the left side of the device, but the temperature reading of 32C/90F doesn't seem that bad... it does feel worryingly hot though. Not sure if it's something on my end or a common thing with CM11, but I never had this on any other build.
As a sidenote - do the developers accept donations?
Audio stuttering in Rayman Jungle Run
I just did an SD card install of CM11 on a Nook HD+ and it's been working well (thanks!), except that I've noticed that the audio in Rayman Jungle Run and Rayman Fiesta Run tends to stutter / warble, making it unpleasant to listen to. Youtube and Great Big War Game sound are good. I'm using cm-11-20141129-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-sdcard.zip with its initial sdcard image for ovation (sdcard-cwm-early9.img) from the first post. The micro SD card is Samsung class 6 16GB.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Well, what I did, is I found the thread here that describes how to put B&N's OS v2.2.0 on a bootable microSD card. Once I had that working (it's not like B&N is ever going to update the firmware), I did a backup of the Nook's internal storage, and then installed CM11 on the internal storage.
That should solve your performance issues.
Note: You mention an HD+, but then refer to "Ovation", which is the name for the HD, not the HD+. You may want to edit your message to clarify the situation.

ovation = HD+, hummingbird = HD.

Oops, since the files I used to install CM11 clearly say ovation.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I would have done an internal install, but when I tried to backup the built-in firmware 2.2.0 using CWM 6.0.4.6 (from the OP), I got an error due to the /system partition being unmounted (I'm recalling this from memory; I hope I got it right). I tried using the mount option in CWM, but that failed too. I then said "screw it with the backup... I'll find another on the web", and then tried to do an emmc install of the latest milestone (M12) from the cyanogenmod download site (using SDCARD CWM-based 6.0.4.6 booted from SD... not internal memory), but the install failed with a "status 7" error (IIRC). I also tried using an earlier microSD image (sdcard-cwm-early7.1.img) and tried to install a backup of stock 2.2.0 firmware that I found from another thread here (thinking that maybe I had borked my own from an attempt at installing recovery CWM), but that finished too quickly (yet no errors), and on reboot it didn't appear to have overwritten my own stock firmware. After these efforts spanning a half dozen or so hours of reading, experimenting, etc., I was able to at least get the SD card install working, so I said screw it, I'll just use SD card. But I would really prefer an internal install as you suggest.
I wasn't able to get CWM to boot from internal memory, only SD card (Samsung 16gb class 6). I didn't try very hard though. Maybe this is the reason I can't do an emmc install or backup? Can you only backup internal memory after having booted from CWM recovery (on internal memory, not SD card)?
I was able to find a post somewhere that related the /system problem to rooting, but I never have rooted my Nook HD+ (manufactured Dec'12).
After reading more about the slow 4kB random write performance on most SD cards, I'm thinking of getting a Sandisk class 4 card, but I'd rather not go there if not necessary.
Thanks again.

It looks like you used the installation files meant for creating SD-based ROM image
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2679899 or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=42406126&postcount=7 for info/pointers on EMMC installation.

This worked! I now have an emmc install of cm11 M12 from the cyanogenmod site. Since I'm running Ubuntu GNU/Linux, not Windows, I replaced steps 1 to 3 in your instructions in the above link with (at terminal prompt, with microSD card inserted but unmounted):
gunzip emmc-cwm-early3.1.img.gz
sudo dd if=emmc-cwm-early3.1.img of=/dev/sdb
I then mounted the microSD card and copied (as root) the zip files as in your link, all with terminal. The unmounted /system partition error did not appear, and the M12 install went fine! When wiping I had an error related to sd-ext missing, but from some more searching I concluded that it was benign.
Thank you for helping me out. I was starting to give up before the help I've received here. I'm generally really pleased with the performance of cm11 on Nook HD+ so far. I'm not yet noticing much difference between emmc and sd-card installs, performance-wise.
Unfortunately, the earlier performance problem (sound stuttering/warbling in Rayman Jungle Run) is still there using this internal / emmc install vs. the earlier SD-based install of cm11, which suggests that the problem is in cm11 itself. On stock firmware (version 2.2.0 I believe when tested), Rayman Jungle Run ran fine (no sound problems at all). The sound problem may be a slowdown problem, but it's not severe.
