I've got an incredibly irritating WiFi issue that seems to be different from other complaints I've seen in this subforum. It's not that WiFi doesn't work, or that it disconnects randomly from my home router. It always turns on, and once I establish a connection it maintains it ad infinitum.
However, some amount of time after the WiFi is turned on and connected to a network, it becomes incapable of scanning for or connecting to other networks without reboot. I plan on using my tablet a lot during travel, so this is a major problem for me. Even if I've saved a network I regularly use, when this bug occurs, I cannot switch from my current network to that saved/known network. Specific example: say I'm connected to my home router, then I go get in the car and turn on my phone's hotspot. The HD+ will refuse to recognize the phone hotspot is even available, giving only the options to "Forget" or "Cancel" when I click it on the network list. All the while, WiFi is still on and working properly with the home connection.
Is this a known issue with the HD+, or is it possible/likely that I have a faulty sample? Has anyone found a workaround?
Your title says CM10 and CM11. Do you mean CM10 or CM10.2? I run CM10.1.3 stable and do not experience that issue.

Sorry, I meant to specify that but wasn't able to edit the OP after submitting. I've tried various nightlies of both CM10.2 and CM11. Have not tried CM10.1 since I just received the tablet last month.
Think Wifi scanning is a known problem with CM 10.2 on HD+. Just turn your wifi off then on to work around the problem.

For me, when the issue occurs, turning WiFi off and on does not help. The only solution is to reboot.
However, I scoured the Internet some more yesterday and found someone on another device who claimed disabling Google's auto-scanning for networks even while WiFi is turned off (apparently introduced in 4.3) solves this problem. I disabled that feature and so far have yet to have a problem scanning. I'll update the thread after a few more days with whether this solved the issue permanently.

I had the issue on CM 10.2, but not at all on CM11. CM 11 has worked fine for me.

I'm running unofficial cm10.2 and experiencing the same problem. I did not have the problem with cm11, but cm11's network performance was sporadic and generally sub-par.
My thanks to verygreen for his work on both cm10.2 and cm11.
I like the 1.5 MHz over clocking.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I doubt I'd have found that on my own. I tried the suggest fix, and thought it had worked, but just before checking the HD/HD+ forums this evening I took a look at wifi-manager, and then the Wi-Fi portion of settings and there were no other networks visible. It did seem as though it took longer for the problem to show up this time.
Thanks again.

Ok this is not your typical "my wifi wont connect issue"
i have tried a fios router, linksys cisco router w/ dd-wrt and linksys router stock. I first had cm7 on sd and assumed that was the issue so I flashed to emmc. It works great but the wifi stalls after about 3mb of transfer (or a couple of minutes of light usage) and i have to restart wifi with the power widget and it starts working again. EDIT: droid x and moto bravo work perfectly with these routers at the same time of the issue.
I already disabled wifi sleep policy.
I am using CM7 stable installed to emmc. its works fantastic otherwise but this is making it completely ususable for me. I dont think its a bad wifi chip since wifi was solid with HC on sd and seemed fine with stock nook 1.1.0
if i try to install an app it dies 75% through, if i try to play a youtube video it buffers 75% and then dies. it seems anything more than a simple web page lookup kills the wifi stack.
I havent had time yet to really dive in (been porting CWM to the motorola bravo in most my spare time) but hoping there is a simple fix out there, maybe i need to switch to dalgrin's kernel? but it also mentioned wifi issues and seems 2 weeks older than the kerenl supplied w/ cm7 but i am not sure.
This makes the nook completely unusable. Id rather not flash something else, it seems other people are having success w/ cm7 so I would like to work this out.
any ideeas? thanks
that sounds like possibly defective hardware honestly.... But you say it was fine on other ROMs so I dunno. I have had fewer problems on CM7 than Froyo myself. In fact CM7 has been solid with wifi. I wander around a lot with my NC and use many access points.
Do you have a logcat dump per chance?
If nothing is in the log, what is output of dmesg? Anything there that might suggest what's going on?
Also you might try checking out the command line program "wpa_cli". See if it helps you narrow down the issue. You can turn on additional debugging there.
Or, if you know how to rebuild your uRamdisk, appending "-DD" to the wpa_supplicant line in init.encore.rc would also give you more info in logcat...
One last thought-- if you are using dalingrins oc kernel, he took out a lot of debugging stuff (for speed), so if you want more info, revert to cm's stock...

I hope its no hardware, its over 30 days old, i didnt get the extended warranty and I have a ghost armor on the screen
good to know your wifi is solid w/ cm7 and its not a general cm7 wifi issue. what encryption are you using?

You have 1 year manufacture warranty.
Hello-
Its very unlikely to be Nook issue. I have had this issue with laptops and its always the ISP or the router.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
mg
I had almost identical symptoms. I disabled encryption on my router and have had zero issues since.

Check out my thread on wifi http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959823&highlight=dummies
My guess is that it's something in the wifi chip driver ir the wifi software stack. I have the identical symptom where on youtube, it stops after a few mb of download. (Note for mine it was stock NC with auto-nooter 3.0.0) The fix for mine was to set the router to 802.11 g only. So try this test:
1. set the router to 802.11 g only
2. turn off encryption
Let us know what happens.
I'm thinking that these devices have varying wifi quality.
My Nook Color is rock solid with wireless, regardless of encryption. WPA2 AES works as well as no encryption. I use my NC regularly with about 5 different access points around town. I'm using Dalingrin's 1100 MHz kernel with CM7 stable.
On the other hand I have a Motorola Droid that barely works unless I either turn off encryption or go to 802.11b! Those Droids were rather notorious for poor wifi. It does the same thing the OP mentioned - it stops transferring after a few megabytes although it says it's still connected. The wireless must be disabled and re-enabled.
It's AES, plain and simple. Turn it off on your router. if you're using WPA2, set it to WPA.
Your problems will go away. Now go to this thread, star it, and add your info please: http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=3314

Lol I was 99% sure of this. I had the same problem on 2.6.29 kernels on my dx. it magically went away on 2.6.32.
I am using AES, I was going to try to turn it off next, now I know
thanks.
Fattire, thanks, I checked wpa_cli and it just fails to find anything and the scans fail once the issue happens.
The one thing all those routers I tried had in common was AES, its the only thing I really trust. I guess i will have to setup a stub network and seperate AP for the nook color
thanks!
After setting the AP to WPA2/WPA Mode the Nook's wifi is working perfectly under CM7 (except for needing to be restarted after the screen is off when sleep policy is on but i beleive this is a common documented issue)
thanks!
I posted on the cm7 thread and hopefully they will get this fixed asap.
Hey all,
since a couple of days I have a problem with my wifi, it keeps switching on and off (I can see the checkbox activating and deactivating, every couple of seconds, at the moment it is unchecked and says "error")
as I said, the wifi worked before
I am running cyanogen 7 (http://android.doshaska.net/cm7) on Milestone
- But I have also tried MIUI, with the same problem
does issue sound familiar to anyone?
Maybe it is an app which force turns my wifi on/off, is there any way to check which one it is (as far as I know I don't have an of them, eg juice defender, tasker installed)
Many thanks
Have you tried other WiFi networks? Because the same error being reproduced across two different ROMs seems a little unlikely.
Well, the problem is that my wifi doesn't stay on long enough (just a couple of seconds) to scan/connect to any network.

So it isn't a problem connecting to a network, it's a problem of the wifi not even being able to turn on?
Well "technically" it does turn on, but it switches off immediately

wow, i just logged in to search for this issue myself. I have that same issue across multiple roms also. The one that did work was the Telus Lite Eclair. I liked that one, but of course I wanted to check out others. Each one was the same as you describe. Wifi scans, disconnects, scans, in a loop.
I have done searches on google for wifi disconnect loop android, and seen some stuff about kernals and stuff that is over my head at the moment. If some one has an idea on how to get it working that would be great.
I wipe before any install, I've went back to stock and it works, everytime I went to the Telus Lite one it also always worked. I dont know if theres a clue there or not?
Im on an Telus milestone in Canada, on Telus network if that makes a difference.
And since I think this is my first real post, Thanks for the work guys.
Not sure if this would work, but this is the first result that popped up: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/koush/75782-wifi-disconnect-loop-cm6-final.html
EDIT: People are saying that Hidden SSIDs and MAC filtering can cause problems when trying to connect to the WiFi network. Try forgetting the network, making the network visible(protected if you wish) and reboot the phone and try again.
ok, time for a stupid question...
where do I find suitable kernels?
I can't find anything about this (roms and kernel tweaking is a is pretty well documented though)

As far as I know, you won't be able to change the kernel on the Milestone at all, due to the locked bootloader.

a little update, I checked my settings on my router and there was nothing really out of place. For poops and giggles I installed Shawdowmod, and it works with out issue with my wifi. Go figure. Anyway, think im keeping it.
Thanks for the help.
hmmm, good to hear you figured it out.
I just went back to stock and guess what? still nothing
maybe I'll try that rom and see
Ok so I recently rooted my beautiful touchpad and now the Wifi has just stopped working! Ive wiped data, dalvik and all the other good stuff, reinstalled my rom and it seemed to work. After rebooting the device, it stops working again. Im getting SERIOUSLY frustrated with this device....

Wifi on CM Touchpad can be iffy due to the fact that the drivers have not been fully sorted out yet. For some it works perfectly, for others it is problematic.
There is a whole thread in the development section dedicated to discussing this which also has lots of suggestions for improving things for people where the wifi is problematic.
The problems I have with wifi seem to happen at the edge of my router's range. My network is on channel 9, and I've never changed it, since all the lower channels are saturated in my condo building.
On WebOS, wifi works fine.
On CM9 a0.6, wifi was fine and I wondered what everyone's problem was.
On CM9 a2, wifi would cut out when I tried to actually use the network when I had half or fewer bars. I could wait a minute and it would usually come back for a few minutes. No problems when the signal was strong.
On CM9 4/16 nightly, wifi works much better, failing maybe 1% of the time compared to before.
I was previously having issues staying connected using cm9 and aokp builds. Disconnects were really bad and so I went to my router settings. I have a Linksys router with both wireless G and N. I disabled the N signal and set my G signal to channel 1. Wi-Fi is working better than ever and have not had any disconnects since the change. So apparently the N signal interferes with the hptouchpad's reception. I am using latest cm9 nightly. Hope this helps someone

So after a long wait and having updated my boss's SGS4 to the sweet chocolaty kitkat, I came across an official CM 11 nightly for our beloved cappy, (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2557481) I tried it and for a nightly it running exceptionally except for one thing that sent me back to SlimBean, I can not get whatsapp to connect by any means. Everything else is working beautifully but this D: it even downloaded from the playstore just fine (as opposed to all the errors said to be caused by ART) I tried all the lib fixes I found that said it got whatsapp working again but non of them did the job. Any one that has got it to work?
Try to check your APN settings. It worked for me.

The APN actually was cleared but that wasn't the problem as I was trying to connect with wifi, however the problem was fix on the nightly right after that n.n been working great with ART the only problem I seem to be having now is the occasional deep sleep which the phone wont wake up from without a reboot. Not really sure what's causing it.:silly:
You can always try a different governor/scheduler setup to fix the wake problem.

Hi guys,
Recently got my nook HD+ booting again and is now running CM 10.2.1.
I remember before I had stopped using it, it had issues connecting to wifi or when it was connected, very flaky or slow..
Has anyone else encountered this issue? Is there an easy fix?
10.2.1 has always had those issues go back to 10.1 or up to 11
