Hi, I've searched the forums here for a while but have honestly not found the answer so I hope someone can help. I have an S III I9305 which I updated OTA to the official 4.3 last week. the baseband version is I9305XXUEMK1 and the kernel version is dated Thursday 12th December. From searching I've only found the baseband I9305XXUEMKC which I believe was dated around end of November 13.
I simply wanted to know if there is any way to go back to the official 4.1.2 (i.e. as it was before the update to 4.3). I have not rooted the phone or done anything else with my phone. I have read all the stuff about Knox which I believe could prevent the phone to be downgraded without voiding the warranty, but this is not really a big issue for me as I've had the phone for over a year now. I was not ever planning on rooting the phone or adding any custom roms either. Just looking for a way to restore the phone as it was really!!
Hope anyone can help, and advance apologies for what is probably a very nooob question.
thanks
edited to add: I am on T-mobile (EE) in the UK, as I understand that AT-T cannot downgrade without bricking the phone.

The 4.3 bootloader (Knox) does not allow any downgrade irrespective of Knox flag status. This is an issue many users are not happy with.
Sorry.

thank you for replying to me, this is thoroughly annoying and I am gutted that I didn't see the problems people have described before updating! Just assumed that an update would be an upgrade!! clearly not. Is there anything else that I could do to make this bad situation slightly better? or have a made a rod for my own back?
appreciate you taking the time to reply.
Standard reply .
Factory reset .
Or flash a stock or custom rom .

There is nothing you can do for now except to wait and see what developers come up with. I would advice not to update to 4.4 kitkat yet unless you are sure you want to do so. There is no way back from 4.4 to 4.3 either.

i wasn't aware that 'no way back' can be fractioned into bits haha
please stay polite with your goys fellows, they can insult you as well
thank you all for taking the time to reply.
I think i am going to stick as I am for now. Incidentally, I ended up doing a factory reset and the issues I was having with the battery drain and lack of email notifications have all been fixed! so I am fairly happy now!
that's good to know that there is no way back from 4.4 either, this will make me more cautious for any future updates!
peace out.

Hi Guys, been reading up on Android for a while and have to say you guys are awesome some really great info in here.
i just have one quick question if someone would be so kind to help.
i was awaiting the ICS update and checking the Facebook page (and here). wasnt feeling experienced enough to do the whole root and mod stuff yet (hopefully soon)
but on the facebook page. i noted this link for a simple official upgrade
http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/424364/how_update_your_samsung_galaxy_note_ice_cream_sandwich/
i followed the procedure (perhaps very stupidly)
came straight here to see what new magic i could make
and saw the "Public Service Announcement"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633938
did i screw up here guys? kinda freaked! if so....should i revert back. is that an easy thing to do?
maybe im reading too much into it
thanks the help ill be sure to thank anyone
You should be fine. This is really affecting what seems to be the rooted version with chain fire. I have the official stock lpy and have no issues. So I would just recommend staying where you are at the moment and don't attempt to root or go into cwm.

lol you just freaked me out aswell, but i guess this has nothing to do with the official stock Germany ICS release, right!? Cos i Flashed it yesterday and its working great so far!!!!
Or is this something that can happen down the line?
The announcement is for ICS repacks from previous leaks
+1 ! i'm also hesitant on rooting and flashing because i'm too busy at the moment and can't be bothered with a bricked phone.
The announcement you're refering to is quite old though and concerns ICS repacks that were built using leaks while the official G-Note ICS from Samsung was still under development.
If you flashed your phone using the official ICS downloaded from samsung directly you shouldn't have any problem.
Also, i'm not 100% sure about this but i think flashing (even an official and clean stock rom) can go dreadfully wrong (=bricked phone) if there's a problem (like a powerfailure or computer crash or if your cat jumps on your phone and disconnects the cable) in the very first phases after you launched the operation. That's when the program installs all the required boot files on the phone and if those are missing, it just will never turn on again.
I also asked some folks in another post on the forum and they assured me that most roms are safe to flash if they we're built from stock roms. So since GB has been out for so long, it's pretty much safe to flash any GB-based custom rom. Now that ICS is out, it'll be pretty safe to flash custom ROMs based on ICS in a month or two i guess.
I'm too inexperienced to give advice but i think you'll be fine. Hope the above info was useful.
A guy sold me an ATT Moto X and he neglected to tell me it was rooted. So now I'm stuck with root that I don't really want on this phone. I tried using RSD Lite and the All in One Tool that was posted on here but nothing would work with my computer. So, now im just looking for a stock rom I could flash but I can't seem to find any on here for ATT. Any recomendations to fix this? Lastly, would flashing the 4.4 leak that was posted in the General section work? any help is appreciated.

As long as you are on 4.2.2 you should be able to rsd lite back to the most latest 4.2.2 firmware.
Either way, you can flash the 4.4 leak with fast boot

you probably are doing something wrong with flashing the stock FW. check the threads that talk about it and you should be fine. If you are running mac then there is a thread for that. if not then there is a thread for that as well. post in those threads with questions and you will get answers. i wouldn't take th 4.4 leak because you don't seem like you want to toy with your phone. It's possible that those people that took that leak might have to do a little or perhaps a lot of things to eventually take the real OTA. This has happened with other phones. You don't seem like you want to do that much tweaking so just go to those threads and ask questions there and explain what exactly you are doing and the errors you are getting.

*** AS I SAID EARLIER I WILL UPDATE THIS OP (Original Post) IN ORDER TO REFLECT ANY INFORMATION THAT COULD BE OF INTEREST ON THE SUBJECT ***
Hi there!
I have bought my device a couple week ago and since I did not know about knox, I just allowed Samsung to install the 4.3 update that was pushed to my device.
I have since decided I want a custom ROM on my phone, and when I started researching, I found out pretty quickly that knox may cause issues.
I don't really care about voiding my warranty, because I have now tested the device and made sure it is works, and I'm usually careful about what I flash.
The thing is, I have read so many things about knox that I don't know what's true and what's not. Unfortunately I don't have all the links to everything I've read, but i'll update this OP with the links later (some posts were worth reading and very interesting)
So, what I've read about once you've got knox:
- You cannot get rid of it (everyone pretty much agree on this)
- There are ways to root without tripping knox to 0x1, so you keep your warranty, but what about unrooting? Or do you just flash a stock rom not rooted? I guess you keep the bootloader as it is?
- even flashing stock 4.3 will trip knox (really? always)
- if you have knox, you cannot flash anything below 4.3, even custom ROMs, or you'll have issues with wifi, etc. (this is what I've read somewhere, what seems to be a fact is that if you try to downgrade the bootloaer to anything smaller then you may break wifi and other features)
- and it gets better: once you've got knox, if you flash a 4.4 ROM (custom, of course, since there is no 4.4 stock for our device yet), there's no going back to anything smaller (not even 4.3)
Some of the above statements are clearly facts at the present time, until knox is cracked, if it is ever, but some of it sounds like BS, or at least i hope it is, because otherwise I'm not about to flash anything :-/
And this is just the beginning, I'll keep updating this post, and I'll try to separate fiction from facts. anyway, feel free to comment on these and give me answers if you know things for a fact (no guesses please).
Now I gotta go, sorry!
Cheers,
fa
Edit:
You will find a lot of threads on knox especially in the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 forums. But I guess most of the info on how knox works is valid for our device as well (I9305).
A lot of people seem to place a lot of hope in one of the greatest Android devs: Chainfire.
Here are a few links with info on knox, for those who like to read:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447832
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2597774
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2569349
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447832 <== This is actually a thread you want to follow. Very interesting, but there's a lot to read. If a solution comes to get rid of knox, that's probably one of the first places on XDA where they'll talk about it.
It would be great to know if there is hope to see a knox removal tool.
Meanwhile, I see the following different scenarios. Could you share your experience and tell me how it works for you? As answers trickle in, I'll update this post with the answers themselves or links to the posts where the answer is provided:
1) You don't have knox: lucky you, enjoy and DO NOT UPDATE TO 4.3 or flash a 4.3 ROM with knox bootloader, or you will one day regret it!
2) You have knox. So if I got it right, there is no way to change your bootloader, but there are various scenarios:
a) you don't care because you're happy with stock and no root (then keep moving, nothing to see here, I wonder why you are even reading this...)
b) you want to keep your stock ROM and default kernel, but you want to root. I have read many threads where it is said to be possible. WHAT'S THE BEST WAY FOR THIS?
c) you want to keep your stock ROM but you want another kernel: IS THIS POSSIBLE, and if so, WHAT KERNEL WORKS/DOESN'T WORK?
d) you want to get rid of the whole Samsung ROM, so you want to flash a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) and a custom ROM/Kernel. So what works, and what does knox prevent you to do in that case?
Cheers,
Fa

This is an idea, fabecoool. There would be nothing wrong if someone is responsible for making a guide/tutorial/ to our terminals in version 4.3 Stock with all this questions. There are many people who are lost right now and this would be helpful.
Many people do not know that really brings the version 4.3 and this will help them not to get into trouble.

Flashing stock wont trip knox. Once ur on official 4.4 with new bootloader u wont be able to downgrade no matter where u come from. Knox or no knox. Official 4.4 will have a new bootloader which prevents u from downgrading. Sounds like apple doesnt it. Lol

Do you mean that you won't be able to downgrade to a stock ROM smaller than 4.4, or to a ROM (included custom ROMs) smaller than 4.4.
Anyway, it does sound like Apple indeed.

Well yes, you're lucky. Especially if you care about custom roms, if you do, don't flash official stock 4.3. Even if you like the Samsung UI (touchwiz), I would recommand you find a 4.3 stock without Knox. Just look for it in the forum.

Greetings!
There is a lot of paranoia theme Knox, from my point of view the only problem is the warranty for ODIN and flash an earlier version, I do not see another problem. However, those who want to return to a previous version do through recovery, I've done it many times and have not had any problems (have a look at my signature) those ZIP'S I've modified to share. Try!

There is a thread for the international version but what you need to do is get an apk that changes your "custom" status to "official" then you will be able check for updates. I do believe this thread will get you started. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2383484
If you have deleted any apks then it may mess up any updates you take. Or go to sammobile and look for 4.4 firmware for your phone and use Kies to install.
The 9005 can receive it's latest update thru kies, or by going into the settings menu, tap general tab, and scroll down to about device, then system update.
I have only change the md5 file with kies not the rom....I wanted to make the phone rooted not to change the official rom...can I correct this problem with my updates without change the official rom from my phone??? Or is there any app to do that???

I see.
The other reply that I made with the link in it. Follow that link and install what it tells you to install.
After you install it you can make you phone show an "official" status which will allow you to check for updates.
I do not know where the guy in the YouTube video got his firmware.
There is firmware available for the SM-9005 at www.sammobile.com but they seem to be country and carrier specific, I do not know as I do not have that phone.
You may be better off getting instructions in this section of XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3?nocache=1&z=7992070960968063
Good luck and be careful not to brick your phone.

Sir I think you're looking for opinions on what to do and that's not what xda is here for. You're not even in the right sub forum for your device. We can talk forever about the pros and cons of custom roms over official releases. If you're worried one bit about knox counter, then do the official release. If you're comfortable with modifying your device and you can follow directions, I recommend you focus all your attention to this sub forum for your device here! The omegadroid link you attached can be found here on xda! I highly suggest you read through the 3000+ posts that users like you made. That might make up your mind for you.

Hi all!
I've been reading all day about how to SIM unlock my I9305 UK 3 Hutchison 4.1.2, and I'm getting somewhere, but feel I've hit a dead end with the sources available online and here. If I've missed something obvious I'm sorry! Would really really appreciate some guidance on where to go next.
I need to downgrade from 4.1.2 to 4.1.1 to do the simple unlock trick from the phone dialer code, but the first impediment is I can't find any UK 3 Hutchison firmware for the I9305 anywhere, not on any of the main firmware sites (http://www.samsdroid.com and http://www.sammobile.com) or here on XDA forums, or using Google. Neither 4.1.1 nor later versions.
So first off, if anyone knows where to find that then I guess I'm sorted? Even if I found 4.2/4.3 then I think I could downgrade to 4.1.1 using any carrier's firmware, then sim unlock, then flash the newer 3 Hutchison firmware and be ready for OTA 4.4, right?
If not, I need to know the implications of flashing a ROM from a different region/carrier. I'm going to sell this phone, and Kitkat might be coming out soon, so I need it to be able to accept OTA updates, and this is what I can't find clear answers on.
The ROMs I can find are:
non-UK, non-3, stock 4.1.1 firmware at samsdroid.com, a few versions from different European countries, all from a particular Euro carrier.
And from here pre-rooted UK 4.1.1 EE carrier firmware. My reading suggests that the rooting shouldn't be a problem, that an OTA update will unroot it, which is what I want. But they're not 3 Hutchison.
So what 4.1.1 ROM is best to flash, and how do I get it to a state where it will accept OTA updates?
I think that covers it, let me know if anything isn't clear.
Many many thanks you lovely people!
The would be you best bet, I've run it and its great and although its says it's an EE Rom there is no carrier bloatware, in effect stock Samsung

Hi, thanks for replying!
I guessed this was my best bet, but can you or anyone confirm for me, what will be the situation with OTA updates after flashing it?
Thanks!
PS. Don't want to take any unnecessary risks here seeing as I can't find any 3 Hutchison firmware to use as a backup! If only I had that, I could experiment more...
Rooted phone OTA update may well fail on install and phone refuses to boot . See multiple posts .

Oh right, thanks for clearing that bit up!
So what about the issue of using another carrier's firmware?
If I use th EE pre-rooted firmware and unroot, or use the European firmware? Can I then receive OTA updates or do I have to do something or is it not possible?
Thanks

They said 'may' fail, so I guess it's fine for some, disaster for others.

The quote " They said " implies that you haven't used it, so on what basis do you feel experienced to comment...
What's the method you gonna use to unlock the phone? Please tell me.

I think it's pretty obvious from the thread I haven't tried it!
Just trying to interpret JJEgan's words. They cite 'multiple posts'. So I guess the task, when I'm at home, is to search for these posts and decide for myself if there's anything to it. Don't mean to offend you by not taking your word on it, but 1 is a very small sample size!

Multiple posts means multiple users have posted help OTA update has failed usually at the same % in every case phone has been rooted .
Obviously if other multiple users have not had a problem they are not going to post help i don't have a OTA problem due to root .
Searching may not be that easy as many users don't exactly describe a problem in the title .
Me try OTA no i never use stock but i have read the majority of posts on the I9300/05 forum to know that some have a problem with root and OTA .
If it is actually totally untrue better get RootSu to remove it in the sticky .
I have no idea what accusation you think I'm making against Liquid Perfection, and I'm fine with appearing like a newbie, my true identity.
Is there anyone out there who isn't a horrific internet cliché who knows what will happen if I flash a different carrier's firmware on my phone and try to OTA update??
Mod Edit
Thread cleaned.
Please stay on topic.
Thank you

For anyone coming across this in future: I decided to take the plunge and flash 4.1.1 EE software on my 3 network S3, and behold, OTA update worked just fine. No problems so far. Fingers crossed it stays that way!
