Safe Mode - Nexus 5 General

For those of you who don't know, Safe Mode is similar to what you find on a Windows computer. If your phone seems to have some sort of Malware, Virus or even an annoying bootloop then you can put the phone in Safe Mode to remove the app that you suspect is causing havoc. Its a great tool for anyone with major software issues.
HOW TO GET INTO SAFE MODE: Press and hold the POWER button then you will see 3 options (technically 5 but who's counting). Press and hold POWER OFF until the Safe Mode option pops up and your phone will reboot in Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode you will see a water mark that indicates that you've successfully done it correctly.

Hey, this is very interesting. As Nexus users, I trust most of us shouldn't need to use it due to recent nandroid backups we should all be keeping, familiarity with adb we should all have, acute awareness of sketchy looking apps we should all possess, and the end-all fix of factory image installation readily available.
But still, this is interesting. I booted up in to it to experiment. I tried launching Pandora and it worked at first. It got to the splash screen and even a screen after that; one telling me about a new feature of Pandora, but then it force closed after about 3 seconds. I was kind of surprised it even got that far. I wonder how far, programmatically, it got. That feature screen I saw might have been downloaded prior to me booting up into Safe Mode, was cached, and meant to be seen the next time I launched the app. Either way, it was interesting. I also noticed all non-system apps were removed from the app drawer. The only way I could launch Pandora is because it left the icon on the tray at the bottom of my home screen. I find that interesting because it was programmed to remove the icons from the app drawer, but not from the home screen? Also: its claim of all third-party apps being disabled is technically incorrect. It just disables all non-system apps. I have SuperSU, Cerberus, and AOSP browser installed as system apps and they are intact in Safe Mode. Under normal circumstances, I suppose the claim could hold some substance. Although, with carriers and their bloatware apps, the term "third-party" kinda gets skewed...
Anyway, whoa. Back to the original post. Nice find, OP. It's pretty cool that Android has such a state.

Yeah, the SAFE MODE feature should only work for SYSTEM APPS and not 3rd party ones. Its a great feature for anyone having bootloops with apps such as SETCPU (if you mess with the minimum CPU speed and you run into constant bootloop).
I'm glad I could contribute my find with others in this community.

This trick I knew from before but day before yesterday I found a new one....here it is
so just power off you device and then power it on, then let the google logo go and after the boot animation starts just keep pressing the volume down button until u get back to the lock screen and there it is.

Question, Im in a bootloop and my Nexus wont go past it. I can get to recovery mode. Tried a few things and still in a boot loop. Anyway to get to safe mode if my phone wont turn on to get to the power menu?

I'm honestly not sure how to do SAFE MODE unless the phone is booted up. If you can get into recovery then your best bet would be to WIPE the data & CACHE.
I'm not sure what even caused your boot loop since you posted limited information. If that doesn't work then tell me more and maybe I can help solve your issue.

Hello, I'd like to solve a problem with the annoying google search widget on recents @Lollipop and a user says in order to solve it I need to jump into safe mode and hit the recent button once, after that the widget should be gone.
I followed the instructions to get into safe mode, but I went into bootloop ?
I had to restore my backup afterwords
Why this could happen? Thanks for reply!

Thanks! Somehow I managed to trigger this on my standby HTC 610 and had no idea what it was. Had the same watermark in the bottom corner so it's built in to android

bro does it really work???

(MOD) LbsTestMode.apk Fixed ( Better GPS MOD )

After testing for a few Day, seems the LbsTestMode.apk is what is Screwing up GPS..
I've taken the time to rip apart the app and fix the settings in it ( SUPL & Port ), can truly say in my Results I can now get gps working 100% everytime / every factory reset now when opening maps..
I've included 2 version of this Mod, One is For Stock Rom's & Vibrant1-9 Series Rom's. The Second is for Hybrid & Frankin-Twiz Rom's, please Download the Correct one.
Doesn't Matter How you install it, as You can't adb install to /system/app! That only leaves Adding it to a Rom & Flash or ADB Push or Root explorer.
After Adding the App to /system/app folder you must do a Factory reset so the Correct Settings apply off the bat!!!
Download for Stock Rom's & Vibrant1-9

Download for Hybrid & Frankin-Twiz Rom's

Enjoy

So there are other changes in builds of your custom roms? Im not sure I followed that last part.
Second is this just a simple swap and run, any advantages to having it a runnable in the launcher drawer or just ease of access vs the pound code.

This has Nothing to do with what your Build on... Works on stock build as well.
Launch-able app is main for people that wants to just open with out having to pound it... Also helps as some of my Builds did not include this app..
when you say Factory Reset. Do you mean to do a factory reset of the phone or to just delete GPS Data? If you say factory reset of the phone is there a way to do that with out having to back it all up and restore all your settings.

Yes that's what a Factory Reset Mean..
However, you can try Deleting the GPS Data & reboot the Phone & let me know how that works.
Results after I did factory reset, Lbs GPS Data Reset, then first acquire.
After caching the GPS data from the towers (75 seconds) following are the test screens.
After the data is downloaded for the initial positioning from the cell network the sat locks were progressive and quick.

Does this mod just change the default values of the settings (SUPL and port), or does it change some other behavior of LbsTestMode?
Also, are these modded APK files compatible with the new leaked Vibrant ROM?

I had the GF test it when she went out with her sister earlier, her signal took a minute or so to lock in and cache, and once they hit the highway not even a glitch. Straight as an arrow in maps and navigation.
The files from the new ROM and this fix makes it run about as perfect as one can ask given hardware constraints.

[WORKAROUND] SDspeed 1.0: Full speed SDcard transfers with 2.6.37+ kernels - New apk!

SDspeed 1.0
This is the first iteration of the new graphical SDspeed. Its an apk and requires you to be rooted. It allows not only mounting but cache adjustment also. Just slide the slider, click set, and then mount. To unmount, just safely remove device/unmount/eject on your host computer and disconnect the cable. The GUI is not the cleanest right now, the set button is offset because there is currently a hidden “Set at boot” checkbox to the left of it. I haven’t had time to implement that feature yet.
Get it at http://www.incredikernel.com
Older console version:
http://www.incredikernel.com/?p=165
Edit: Since I know this is going to be asked. Yes this should work with all kernels > 2.6.35, not just mine.
Reserved....
Is this a one time thing or do you have to enter commands in every time you want to transfer?

Every time. No easy way to make it permanent without putting out my own ROM. As much as I would love to do that. I don't have time.
Edit: I might make an easy graphical frontend for it at some point though, so you just hit a button on screen or something.

It may help to increase your cache also. I think when I do the gui for it, I'll toss in a slider to increase the cache also.
Just got around to using this. Good work, works great. I was averaging 4.3Mb/sec

duh, unplug and plug it back in. i shouldv'e tried that first, but i panicked, and it's late...oh well

APK works well with a few caveats:
- large cache inflates speed initially
- speed still seems to settle around 2.25MB/s
- mount button text doesn't change to let user know it's done anything, or that button can be used to unmount (which apparently it doesn't do)
Also, consider implementing the mount/unmount button as a widget and/or notification toggle. One of the most irritating things with CM is how many touches it takes to mount the SD card, especially with the warning.
The new apk works great!
Working great thanks chad

There are clearly still some other issues preventing maximum transfer rate. Not exactly sure what at this time though. I need to tinker some more.
As for the other things, its all stuff I've considered already, I just haven't had time to implement them. Meaning I still need to learn/figure out how. Since as of yesterday morning, I knew absolutely nothing of java and using the SDK. Haha. I just started it yesterday and wanted to put out what functioned so that people don't have to go into the console every time to mount the sd. Plus I'm debating how much time I want to spend on this, since its an issue that should eventually be fixed up stream, not a permanent solution.

This App will help you enable the on-screen SoftKey (like the one present on Nexus devices) easily. Please make sure that you have a Rooted device. Navigating via SoftKey is easier than using hardware buttons specially with the big screen devices (e.g. Note 2). Also this app can be used with your phone if you somehow damaged your phone hardware keys. It is compatible with stock and custom ROMs (like CyanogenMod, AOKP etc). Please note that some stock launcher may seem a bit odd as they were not designed to go nicely with the on-screen button layout. To fix this issue use any other launcher available on Play Store.
There are two versions of SoftKey Enabler - One is absolutely free (with ads) and other is paid (Pro Version). The only difference between two versions is Ads.
Requirements :
- Android 4.0 +
- Root
- Busybox should be installed
Tested Working On :
- Galaxy S3
- Galaxy Note 2
- HTC One X
Apart from the tested devices, it should be able to run on any rooted device running on Android 4.0+.
If you have any feature request, suggestions or bug report then please drop a mail to [email protected]. We will try our best to resolve any issue or add add new feature.

Hi,
I tried the free version but it didn't actually work for me (somehow I thought I'd see an extra bar of keys on my HTC One S but apparently it just places them on my current soft keys pad, which is OK but not exactly what I was looking for). Anyways, after I installed it I clicked on "reboot" but it didn't reboot my device so I did it myself. After a reboot, I realized this was not what I was looking for so I got into the application and disabled it. Again, it asked for a reboot but I had to do it manually once again. After this reboot I proceeded to unistall the application.
Now, the problem is, somehow, I completely lost the 3 vertical dots on Google Play (the ones on the upper right). How is this possible and even more important, how do I get this button back? I can't see my installed applications anymore or change Google Play settings. Please help. Thanks.
[EDIT] Ok, I found an article about this http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2012/01/say-goodbye-to-menu-button.html?m=1 maybe your application changes something in the system and it's permanent, even after the user uninstalls it?
[EDIT 2] Ok, I installed your application again from Google Play, enabled it, rebooted manually and the menu button is there again. I went to Google Play and uninstalled it from there, rebooted and the button is still there, problem solved. You may probably want to give this a closer look because it isn't working properly on HTC One S devices under ICS 4.0.3. Have a nice day!

Could you please let me know if you have Root and busybox installed as described in the App description ? The App automatically creates a backup of the previous settings so if you want to bring back the previous configuration then you can try the "Restore" option from the menu.
To enable softkey the App modifies some system configuration so uninstalling the App is not a solution. Rather I would recommend the "Restore" option. Further OEMs do alter some system files so it is difficult to predict each system behavior.
Thanks for letting us know. Also check your SD Card and there should be a folder named "SoftKey Enabler". There you can find your backup file.
[EDIT] If you can post a screenshot then it would be helpful.

Yes, my device is rooted and Busybox is installed. Since I already uninstalled it I think a second installation won't actually restore my system because the application makes an automatic backup when it's started (I actually tried it and it was exactly how I expected). In any case, the problem is solved by enabling and then unistalling from Google Play or Settings. I hope this didn't change other parts of my system, I guess time will tell (I see it modifies the build.prop).
Thanks.

I get them too. If you're rooted you could freeze the apps causing the update nag with Titanium Backup. If not rooted, just stopping those apps doesn't seem to help. It's just become part of my morning routine to reschedule the nag by 23 hrs 58 min into the future.

But does downloading the update necessarily mean installing it? I mean if you choose download the update, will the phone automatically install the update without prompting the user again?
If you download it you will continue to get notifications to install. Your best bet is to either take it or root and freeze the updater.apk
Root - Titanium Pro - MotorolaOTA

I do not know how to prevent the notifications if you don't have root. Once you have root, if you get Titanium Backup Pro, you can freeze apps. I froze the app called MotorolaOTA and the notifications went away. Freezing the updater app did not get rid of the notifications for me.

Came across this thread searching so figured I'd post this here for future searchers. Long press the System Update notification and click "app info". Force stop MotorolaOTA, and you can disable the notifications there, as well. Doesn't seem to be a way to disable the app entirely, at least without root, and it starts back up on its own eventually. Hopefully the notifications will stay gone, though. Looks like it still updates in the background after it starts back up, but hopefully the nags to install will go away.
*Nope, doesn't stop the install nags. Must be some other service involved.
I accidentally installed the update and bootlooped my phone... I can fix it but it's still annoying.
Always backup your stuff...
Using Nexus 5 as my backup phone for now till I fix my moto X.
Hey if you click download you WILL still be reminded to finish the update. I chatted with a rep and this update is persistent and mandatory! & on purpose from chatting with the moto rep. Picture is below.
Other option apparently is buy a new phone lol. Since you're reading this on XDA it isn't a huge deal considering we all know how to work around such things.

I'm still really confused as to why you wouldn't just update to 4.4 when your phone is completely stock...
Well, if you want to freeze the updates, you need to either have root, or get a signed motorola img without the update, and flash that. Either way, your modifying something, so your not going to get out of doing that. There is no setting that I am aware of to turn off the notifications. Just update. The battery life isn't as bad as they are saying, and I haven't noticed any broken features. 4.4.2 is already out for t-mobile and is coming out for the other carriers soon so just update. If you can't stand it, enjoy knowing that your going to have a better version very soon
There are reports of volume issues after the update. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And none of the updates listed apply to my phone. Battery life has been fine, I don't use MS Exchange, and I've not found the need to print from my phone yet. The only issue I do have, besides the wallpaper zooming after every reboot, is bluetooth volume control doesn't work on Win8.1, though it works fine on my desktop with Win7. Volume control works on both machines with a Galaxy S4, so I've at least narrowed down to the phone.
Anyhoo, I just did a factory reset trying to fix the BT issue (with no luck), and so far haven't gotten another notification about updating. Have only had the phone 2 weeks so may not be an option for other people, just throwing it out there.
ROOT ONLY. Install Disable Service from the play store. It's free. Find MotorolaOTA and disable all the services under it. Reboot your phone. Done.
I don't recall which of the OTA screen it was, but you should notice that there's a time on it. If you click the time (it's not highlighted or boxed, so not obvious) you can enter a new time, which is when it will remind you. Mine somehow defaulted to the current time and I got stuck in the OTA screen until I noticed you could click the time and change when it next alerts you.

Q: How do I root this?
A: Enable root in the perm manager, which can be found in the security folder.
Q: Why is G-Apps not listed for Download?
A: Too Bloaty, add a Google account and install the play store as an APK, I suggest using Aptoide to find it.
Q: 4G LTE isn't working
A: Load the Phone, dial *#*#4636#*#*, goto Phone information, Set preferred network type to LTE/CDMA auto (PRL).
Q: Help! Phone/SystemUI/Keyboard Isn't working/Is Force Closing!
A: Make sure to do a completely clean wipe, also I'm not sure how well this will work if flashed in CWM.
Q: The Browser looks terrible.
A: Settings -> Advanced -> User agent string -> MiOne (It Renders much better & more naturally!)
Q: My Filesystems won't mount/My PC can't see my device/My phone won't act as a MTP/USB Mounting isn't working!
A: Settings -> Developer Options -> Enable Development / USB Debugging (switch both to on)
I'm getting a problem with having an invisible lockscreen, it works but there is just nothing there.

are you using a custom theme? If you are not trying applying a theme. you can get some from here http://en.miui.com/thread-14216-1-1.html
I had the same issue once but applying a theme brought it back to normal.
Question: what's the difference between this rom download and this one. http://en.miui.com/download-112.html

No, my rom has nothing to do with 2699462's.
I am Tquetski not 2699462, It's a different person and this is a different ROM entirely.
This is not a repost of someone elses work lol

Idk, I'm not that guy but there is prob. not too huge of a difference since they both seem to be AOSP base.
I don't know why his is as heavy as mine, the KB+ Translation files account for most of this files size and outside of that it's pretty clean (no weird code or custom APKs)
After Flash Report
Okay flashed this morning, because i fell asleep while formatting my data in recovery last night (huge fail) lol.
Haven't seen much reports on this rom, so i decided to flash & do it myself.
But anyway, so far on first flash, no problems what so ever, booted up normally & quickly, no force closures besides one (as far as i know), nothing major tho, just when you enable the 'smiley' button on the Xperia keyboard, the keyboard force closes, no biggie at all, us android users can easily switch key boards .
Another few UI issues i ran into (again nothing major), i guess a little glitch, the weather icon & calender icons are invisible, not 100%, you can see the shadows, but the icon design itself is missing, also the invisible lockscreen which was already mentioned, these icon & lockscreen issues are easily fixed by applying a theme, another thing, when setting a wallpaper, the alignment was way off, was easily fixed with a reboot tho, not sure if applying a theme also fixed it, but it works regardless with no effort.
Mms works, but i had to do a simple APN edit, honestly haven't checked if the APN settings that came with the ROM works, haven't tested it because i usually use this one specific edit for any MIUI Rom i flash.
Besides that, the Rom has been working flawless for me atleast, also not sure about battery life, when i woke up, my phone was dead due to falling asleep in recovery at 4%, so i will report back on that & any other issues if i run into.
To the dev, great job on the Rom, MIUI can be a pain to most when porting .
To the users, all issues I've reported so far shouldn't discourage you from flashing the Rom, pretty much one time issues, so no doubt flash away
Could you please post your apn edit for us?

Miui usually comes with its own core apks I believe, no need to flash gapps & for the APN edits, go to your APN settings, you should see 4 APN saved, edit any one of the last 2, for the name, put Sprint, for the APN edit under name, I use cinet.spcs then go down to MMSC, click on it and don't erase anything, just add "/servlets/mms" (no quotes) , save it, click on it, reboot & lemme know if it works, honestly, I think it was a trial so keep trying, also mess with the *#*# 4636#*#* menu & see if you get lucky
Well done on this. Hope your builds continue as the other MIUI roms will not work on the latest version of Philz recovery

I think the MIUI base is pretty much to outdated for Philz, i mean come one, its 4.2.2 , CWM & TWRP flashes it flawlessly tho, so no big deal
The S4 Sprint is the quiet crowd; over here it's not too noisy.
I am updating this in a few hours with substantially huge updates. MIUI software camera is functional now so people who like this kind of thing will enjoy it
awesome job on this, runs smooth, all apps seems to be working, haven't had any force closes and GPS is working. i would say nice daily driver if you like MIUI alot.

A lot of those core apks do not work correctly while some do. its hit or miss. Or let me rephrase and say dont work as intended. Like the market that comes with miui is no where close to be like the play store and its in chinese.

I'd say the only real difference is that he used PatchROM where I just use the same Frameworks from my Razr XT926 and then fork it across every device I build for.. Interestingly in this case his release is more of an 'original work' even though mine is more functional but I'll get to that later.
The thing is that I don't really give a fk about being all original, I do care about results. If I continued to use XT926 components from my project here that would be the case but I seen the S4 mini had a working MIUI camera so I just took it along with the CameraParameters and forked it to this to see if it would really run, it did.
I'm not swinging my peen around by releasing over someone else; this port took 5 minutes real-time because my workspace is a little different than a Linux workspace; I fork to multiple devices for greater feedback so I'm really just testing here not trying to steal someone elses usersbase; I'm just playing around and having fun
