hi .
you can root your xl with only one click with TPSparkyRoot..sorry my bad english

Alternatively, u can look for a superSU.zip file and flash it to your phone via CWM recovery.
Just professional NOOB trying to be a NOOB professional.

1. I use arhd's super wipe tool, available from his thread in development section, even for other ROMs and it works fine, or u can do it all manually in recovery.
2. Yes
3. Flash through recovery. Download zip to root of sd card using pc, boot into recovery and follow instructions...simples

I think u need to be s-off before u can root, but I may be wrong. U might aswell s-off as u need this to flash custom ROMs and therefore use ROM manager, as this needs superuser rights which u get with s-off and root.

On the topic of both starter questions and installations, why won't ROMs flash with s-off? What's the big difference between that and s-on and why does one void our warranty with HTC?
(Apologies in advance, if this derails this thread at all.)

You mean why can't we flash ROMs with S-ON! Because this means security on. Basically HTC went and locked their bootloader on most earlier devices and therefore they cannot be hacked. The AlphaRev team have successfully managed to develop a tool to achieve this and enable users to gain root access, install ClockWorkMod recovery (a way of installing custom ROMs and also taking a snap shot of ur current ROM is you mess up and need something to go back to) custom themes etc, etc.
HTC have apparently learnt the error of their ways and promised not to lock the bootloaders in their newer shipped models, however they don't particularly like us messing around with it hence voiding the warranty if you do this...but it is possible to go back to S-ON like nothing ever happened using AlphaRev.
Hope this answers your question, now stick to the topic....
Ha, only joking
Of course I know I need to e-off my device be4 roo/flash rom. What I want to know is : do I need to s-off before using rom manager.

ROM Manger needs root access, so yes you need S-OFF so you can root and install ROM Manager

If you intend to relock bootloader you will loose CWM anyway.

[Q] Only want to root, not S-OFF, H-Boot 2.02.0002. Please help!

Hi! I've waited for the official WWE ICS OTA update without "hacking" my IncS.
Now I only want to root my phone.
I'm not yet interested in flashing custom roms and I don't need S-OFF.
Is there any way to do this without losing my current installation and data? I've read lots of threads, I hear a lot about Blackrose but still don't understand if I can do what I'm looking for.
I would really appreciate any help on my question.
Thanks in advance.

The only option you have at this point in time is to unlock your bootloader using HTCDEV.com. Once it is unlocked, you can flash 4EXT Touch recovery and then from recovery mode install su-3.1.3.zip to apply root and superuser to your current ROM.
Unfortunately the unlock procedure will wipe all of your data and apps, so that really doesn't address the solution you are looking for, but that is the current option you have.
Thanks for your quick reply tpbklake.
Sorry for bothering you a little more....
By your experience do you think that in the future it will be possible to do what I want without needing to wipe data?
Or does this seem impossible to do?
Thanks again for your help!

Anything is possible with the talented devs here on xda, but I would not expect anything official from HTC to address this.

Neither do I believe HTC will address this. It would be great if the fantastic devs here could work around this.
Now that my phone has the latest update and is working like a charm, it would be great to have it rooted.
Thanks for your help.

Also if you do the htc-dev-method you won't achieve "full" root access. Also your warranty will be lost without any chance to regain it.

Willi120,
What do you mean by full root?
Do you mean temporary/permanent root?
About the warranty I know it because I had a Wildfire S and unlocked its bootloader via htcdev.com.
Thanks for your help!

HTC may shipped updates with S-OFF.. Now that's the way to go HTC!

Now I must pray that some magnificent dev finds out an exploit that allows rooting my phone without having to wipe all and start from scratch.
This is both my personal and my work phone and I really don't have the time and patience to redo all.
Specially that now it's working so well...
Thanks for any extra help!

Use fastboot to flash recovery. Wipe data and both cache in recovery. Flash your Rom then turn phone off and go back into fastboot and flash the boot.img by typing fastboot flash boot boot.img make sure its all in the same folder there's plenty of guides on how to do this
Edit. You will have to do this on every Rom you install being s off

You don't need to downgrade as your hboot is the updated one. Keep in that you'll have to flash boot.img (fastboot flash boot boot.img) by extracting it out from the rom.zip after flashing the rom via recovery.

Thanks naathaanb96 and zukri90
I'm stupid and I don't understand what you say ... i have to install first of all recovery, then my rom and finally the file boot.img of the rom which i have installed before?
I have to install the file boot.img each time I want to install a new ROM?
PS: naathaanb96...the folder you're talking about it's the C:\Android with inside fastboot.exe, adb.exe and AdbWinApi.dll?

Yes you have to flash boot.img everytime you flash a new rom. Avoiding flash boot.img will prevent the phone from passing the splash screen.
