[Q&A] All ROMs For T679 - Samsung Galaxy Exhibit 4G

The title says it all.
But to clarify, I have been using this phone for 2+ years, and on the forum since the very beginning. I may not know everything, but I will do my best to answer any question you might have. And I'm sure many other vets might stop by and answer as well.
As always XDA rules do apply here. Please take a few minutes to read them, as I will not hesitate to report you and have your post removed.

For the latest CM11 release (20140123), does it include the kernel that was released to deal with a /data partition issue possibly causing FC and stuck boot ups?
I'd like to update, but my phone didn't work with this ROM without the release of this kernel. It's unclear if the kernel has been updated/changed.

No it doesn't. The author of that ROM stated himself that he will not use another kernel because it works fine on his phone and that if you don't like it use another ROM. You can go ahead and flash 01/23 build, but make sure you flash the kernel you mentioned again to avoid the errors.

I see; thanks, Jorge!

Thank you guys. I highly appreciate you. @jfbs You are very helpful. This is my first time for every thing except installing apps. Your instructions were very clear. Unfortunately, I ran into FC and random booting issue-not a good luck for a noob. I flashed the ADC kernel a few hours ago with 01/23 build. Those issues are gone. Thanks everyone who participated in solving the issue. I will give 'thanks' shortly.
I have one question though. My phone is very slow and the battery drains faster than the 01/16 build. Is the problem with the adc kernel or the latest build? If kernel, how can I keep an eye on the ADC kernel for a better update? Imagine how excited I am upgrading from gingerbread to kitkat. Sweet! Thanks a million.

Problem with DPI and CM11 (jfbs 1/23/14 rom)
After installing the CM11 1/23/14 jfbs rom with the Team ADC kernel and the PA-gapps 0 day package, I am having a problem getting the DPI to properly shrink everything. When I change the setting in build.prop the only part that scales is the status bar, all the icons and apps stay at about the 160 DPI setting. I was wondering if this was a new feature/bug in the new launcher and/or if there another setting that I need to change?

Incremental deterioration of T679 Speed after ROM installation
Hi all,
Thanks for setting up this form for Q&A for ROM installation, I've tried to post generic questions but not sure where.
I've also owned T679 over 2 years and have experimented with various ROMS like the [ROM][JB][4.1.2]Slimbean 3.1.0 Unofficial Galaxy Exhibit 4G or
most recently [ROM 4.2] AOIP Team Insomnia 8/3/13 [Linaro 4.7], but after each install, the phone would just be very slow... this is after I install some apps and i suppose that probably used up some onboard memory... (but who doesn't install Apps after these new ROMs ?)
For those of you who're on the new Android ROMs (I find it hard to believe people can run this phone with 4.4 !!), what is it that you do to speed up your phone so it doesn't take 10 secs to open a webpage? Am I missing something here?
Thanks for your help !!

4.4 has memory improvements that has been added to the code. This was done by Google so Kit Kat would run more efficiently on low memory devices. I use slight over clock settings at 1.2, kernel same page merging, allow purging, interactivex, and sio. Phone runs super smooth. But I don't load my phone with many apps.

JB ROMs
Hi,
in the Development forum you can already find 2 ROMs that are based on JB, namely Slim Bean and Unofficial Cyanogenmod 10. First failed to install for me (rebootet while flashing) [EDIT: I was in fact doing it wrong, works for me now, thanks to b-eock], second had data issues, which can supposedly solved by turning Flight Mode on and off.
CM10V7: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1783064
Slim Bean: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1795770
Guides are linked in the posts.
You have to flash it twice -_- dont make him think something is wrong with the rom... It has to do with the new kernel and partition layout.

Well, at least that fails for me, unfortunately I can't yet post in the developer board.
However CM10V7 is kind of working for me. To get mobile data connection I had to turn on Flight Mode and Turn it off again. Unfortunately Wechat (formerly Weixin) stopped working, don't know who is to blame in that matter.

Also remember to do a wipe the first time you flash and the second time if it reboots during the initial flash. I made that mistake and had major issues. On the first boot everything that tried to load force closed. It was a simple fix though just went in wiped and re-flashed.
that reminds me, is there necessarily a huge benefit to upgrading OS?
or if not jellybean if someone can also point me towards an OS that runs better than gingerbread o:
I haven't tried anything but Slim Bean as far as jelly bean ROMs go but if you are looking for a good stable build I would stay away from jelly bean for the time being. I say that because its a new OS and hasn't had all the bugs worked out yet at least as far as I've read.
There are several ICS ROMs out there that are available. If you look through the development forums you'll find more than you can read through. The few that I've tried have all been better than gingerbread.

With the EU bug lurking around in the ICS roms, I'd steer clear of ICS on your Cappy until a fix is found, otherwise you risk a potentially permanent nerf of your phone's internal memory. Just sayin'

(ROM) MIUI Jellybean

Tquetski said:
This rom does not come with that theme, I only took the screenshot to show it works
-Apply theme components (Icons..) separately.
-When applying icons, the manager will force quit before 100%, it doesn't matter, the icons are still applied.
-After applying a new theme, restart fully for it to take effect (Maybe miuihome just needs to be relaunched, either way.)
IE: All FCs are non-function impairing at this point, just annoying and VERY rare outside of certain things, like icons.
There are no FCs outside of the first MIUIhome FC on boot, and in the mentioned sections of Theme Manager.

I haven't been, I'm not sure what base he's using but I know he'll release a quality rom when his build is ready.
This build is just an alpha for observation purposes even though it is functional somewhat, right now I'm working with the galaxy W folks and there is a lot of communication going back & forth and the base I'll be using will most likely be 2.11.30, because the code is cleaner and It is a more stable release in general.
Give me an hour or so and I'll compile a .30 build to throw up here, If everything goes well
Edit: Believe G-apps was removed by default w/ MIUI
911 should work, shouldn't it. If its based off the latest cm10
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
This build is broken in 3 major ways, because it is an alpha
- Miuihome port is borked for icon refreshes (this includes installing from the app store)
- No GPS
- No USB storage
So any action you cause that updates 'home' will cause a force-quit in terms of 'new' icons.
If people want to use MIUI the best version for stability is ICS based at least for a little longer.
Smartguy you should post your JB publicly so folks can debug it, I can understand if you don't want to because It's not 'complete' but does it really matter as long as it gets finished somehow

Anyone tried CM 10.2 (Android 4.3) yet?

So it looks like Cyanogenmod 10.2 was released early this morning as a nightly. It's based on Android 4.3, which was released for the Nexus devices a few weeks ago I think.
I've been pretty happy with the nightly version of 10.1 I've had on my phone for a couple of weeks now, but I think I might backup my phone and see whether the latest version is worth keeping.
Anyone tried it already and have any comments?
Edit: Tried it, can't use it yet. Keyboard problems, freezing. Oh well.
Been running for about 4 hours at this point, all apps restored.
Had one blue screen reboot on screen wake.
First impression is that it is very smooth. Focal force closes so can't try that.
Camera works but is not stable.
Definitely a beta but off to a good start for the first 10.2. But I can't live with random reboots so back to 10.1-M3 for now.
10.2 has different vold configs
In the 10.1.2 nightlies I was able to manually edit /syste/etc/vold.fstab to swap internal and external sd-card.
This has changed under JB 4.3 and CM 10.2.x. Details are provided here:
http://source.android.com/devices/tech/storage/index.html
[ UPDATE ] Root also works differntly in JB 4.3, so that needs to be sorted as well.

I never restore apps when testing these cause it can cause problems. Did you use Titanium to restore the apps?
No. Just letting the restore function do it from the market.
I installed the nightlies of 8-16-13 and so far (no jinx) hasn't gave me any problems...ofcourse instagram video n pics don't work but other then that its good..so 10.2 cm is based on 4.3? I didn't see it in the tmo cm page...can u share a link if possible?

Yes, it is 4.3.
The test is to see if you can run for several days with no unexpected restarts. If you are able to do that , then be sure and post and tell others about it because that has been the problem for many months now.
All CyanogenMod downloads are always available at http://get.cm
Just scroll down to quincytmo on the left, then choose nightly on top left.
Cool...found it...now there's a newer nightly for 10.1 can I just flash the zip without restarting anythin? Thnx...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T879 using xda premium
If you are running a 10.1 you can just run your cm updater and chosen the new 10.1 nightly.
If you go from 10.1 to 10.2, you should do a typical new ROM procedure. A backup, then factory reset, then flash the new ROM, then the 2013-8-13 gapps, then wipe dalvik and cache, then finally reboot.
I put the boot from the quincytmo 10.2 into the Pacman 4.3 alpha zip. Also using PA 4.3 gapps. Will let you know how it goes.
Been using it for almost 3days. Works great and smooth. At first, youtube seems to crash always, gps doesn't work and i can't download and even update my apps in playstore. (what i did is that reinstall youtube, and sign out my google acct. and then sign in it again to fix playstore and dunno how GPS was fixed . Wiping cache & dalvic cache and rebooting ma phone helped. And now everything's going and works so smooth! N i love it.
Btw focal doesn't work at all. Dunno how to fix it. Always crashes.
Other than that.. Still the best )

Honestly, all I'm doing is swapping files around with winrar. There has to be a compatible boot image though. Unfortunately, without a T-Mobile official JellyBean update, I don't think we can use ATT touchwiz JB roms. A shame as I installed Padawan JB on my friend's i717 and it was killer.
Really though, there are already enough 4.1.2 and 4.2.2 roms to keep me occupied for the time being. I've sort of shyed away from the 4.2 roms as of late and have been just playing with the very stable 4.1 setups as I don't want my phone rebooting on me while I'm at a party or want to have my camera instantly available.
Well to know how to swap files id be lost! I used to have a quincyatt and yeah padawan was really good but 4g speeds on tmobile network were horrible...yeah there are lots of roms but the more we get the more excited we get...

Some of you may read the ATT Note forum. Over there the member ~SoulTaker~ has been compiling Cyanogenmod 10.2 on his own for those users. Because Cyanogenmod has not been creating 10.2 nightlies for the Note.
I have a compile and upload routine setup to produce UNOFFICIAL 10.2 nightlies for the Tmobile note if you want to try them. all are working OK so far, they are the same as what we would be getting from the Cyanogenmod build servers if they were building nightlies for us. All the standard warnings apply.
Here is the link to my google drive folder with the files. Click on the file you want, you will get an error because it can't preview, then look for the download arrow on the bottom right of the screen, click that.
Changelog is the regular 10.2 changelog (when it is up) and look between the date of the last file and the newest. http://10.2.cmxlog.com/?device=quincytmo
NOTE** I am just generating the zip file from Cyanogenmods github, not creating anything. So can't help you if you want a feature or fix or something.

solution to reduce the lag on your GT7.7

WARNING -- you may try this on Jelly bean only, as ICS and HC are not protected and might lead to BRICK bug
Hey All
I noticed that after we made a factory reset our device is extremely fluid fast and smooth
but after couple of days it starts to lag, and continue to lag more and more.
I found that the problem is Storage performance is decreasing overtime due to not wiping and trimming the blocks that we don't use.
This is a famous problem and discussed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1971852#fm
even google fixed it on Android 4.3
Just try this application and tell me, how did you find you device state now?

and you can benchmark it before and after
Thanks all

As far as I'm aware, JB is not faced with the brick bug. I was warning about previous Android versions. Have a read of the XDA thread I linked, can explain things better than I ever could.
No, I think this thread is ok, but maybe make reference to JB only in thread title etc and possible brick warning if used with other.

for real, and i tried it several time, it restores the speed of the device to the day i made factory reset.
it's not placebo and i benchmarked before and after, and the topic above also shows benchmarking.

If I wreck it, it was my failure and I didn't cry for my mom
I must say, I tried your app for fun because I don't have any lags on my device. I have no need for "Project Butter", I use ADW Launcher ex, 268 Apps for IT Administration, Produktivity, Games, Multimedia. If I feel an app opens slowly it's time for "fschk" the Partitions. After that everything works fast and smooth as before.

Have you ever been touched by the "brickbug" with stock recovery or kernel/ROM from Samsung with your P6810 ???

Not this again.....
BTW: I've never actually factory reset etc using the stock recovery, and suppose never going to get the chance .The app developer also made reference to various bricks using his app caused by brick-bug affected devices.
Samsung themselves have signed off the patch (amongst others), so good enough for me. Just a shame that I don't have the option of using this app (safely) unless I use daniels custom JB ROM.

I've had this program on my P6800 for some time now. It has been a blessing, and even upgraded to the Pro version.
It certainly feels snappy like Jelly Bean was just installed. I've set it to do a trim once a week.
Using JB 4.1.2

How are you running native Debian on P6800? Could you post a simple guide how to do it?

SkyHigh kernel for P6800 is built from official JB MD3 source, and because i don't have JB, I can only assume that it is OK and chips aren't affected.
There is a app by dev Chainfire to test and be sure.

I think this may be the rom that will hit over the 3k barrier. at the moment hitting constant 29XX mark in quadrant even with first 3D test staying on avg between 40-60FPS, 38-44FPS 2nd 3D and 23-25FPS on last 3D.
My Setup
Gapps: Banks Min 4.4 7/29/14 build
Runtime: Art
CPU Freq: 1.4Ghz 1.2mV
Govener: Ondemand
I/O Sch: SiO
Additional Tweaks
Malive Booster v2.0
Flashable Seeder by ryu found in seeder op
Hyper Cola v1.6
Once again , Thanks @jfbs for another treat.
To others who are curious, this rom is stacked feature wise, responsive and impressive
Flashed this earlier today and I agree with @det0xx, this ROM has some great customization features and is very responsive!
I've only noticed a few bugs here and there (long pressing location tile doesn't navigate to location menu, needed to re-check and then un-check to disable flip tile effect, unable to remove torch tile), but nothing major. Overall, this is one impressive ROM! Great job @jfbs!
One bug I have is the lockscreen wallpaper disappears and stays black. Did a fresh install, not a major issue, just wanted to report it. Thanks for the rom, really nice.

odd i haven't got that issue or at least not yet. Mind giving more feedback as to
Gapps used/using: List all the ones you have tried only that has this issue. CM, PA, Banks, and/or etc. vers such as 4.4.2 -.4 and build date.
Theme: default or 3rd party if 3rd party link or name of theme
Wallpaper: used gallery or 3rd party app to set it.
Runtime: Art or dalvik
Gapps: banks standard 4.4.4 7-24 build, standard theme. Wallpaper set through gallery, dalvik runtime. The problem seems to come and go. I'm not really concerned with it as at the moment I'm using this device as a media player. If nobody else is having the issue maybe I messed something up when adjusting my settings. When I have the chance I will see if I can sort it out.

Sorry for the delayed reply been tweaking to hit a constant and stable 3k benchmark. at 2950-98 atm for constant and stable. i've hit 3k just recently however phone becomes unstable. if your phone can handle 1.5ghz oc without problems then the 3k is already possible but battery life i'd assume would drop quite a bit. i've also hit unstable 3k using 1.4ghz and tweaking some settings but haven't messed with it much yet. anyways as far as your issue. yeah it has me stumped without physically seeing everything. If your not worried about and at least to my knowledge no one else is having the same issue. let us know if you do figure out what it is that is causing it.
I got my issue resolved. I'm not sure what caused it, but I fixed it by re-flashing the rom.

prolly just flashed without wiping davlik and not 1 zip at a time per a reboot.
I used this ROM on my s4, it is a really nice ROM. Think I will pull out the exhibit and give it a try.
Well this rom is awesome.
And I finally figured out what I did wrong when trying jfbs's roms. It turns out I was not always loading just one zip at a time, and not leaving it alone long enough after booting the rom.
This time I left it be but with the settings screen on and CPU overlay enabled in developer options so I could tell when it finally stopped thrashing the IO subsystem in the phone (over 90% usage in the overlay, showed blue for a good 20 minutes).
So far so good! Been running it now for a day and no major issues.
Though one niggling thing is no way to adjust the hard buttons back light. I prefer to have it always on with the screen instead of timing out after 5 seconds.

if you really want to get the most follow my oc guide in general op. Note battery life decreases past stock voltage. however higher frequency does not. i would also recommend waiting til you try the phone for a little bit before overclocking. however if you want better battery life and lower cpu temps now without sacrificing performance you can always undervolt the cpu for stock frequency. Stock if i remember correctly is 1ghz at 1.2mV i know almost if not everyone using the galaxy w (which is where most of our stuff comes from) can run 1ghz at 1.1mV as far as i know all our exhibits can as well. I could be wrong but at least from others and my own experience 1.1mV works flawlessly for 1ghz. as far as flashing a kernel to do it with jfbs roms you dont need to flash anything with cars1198's roms you do. Also i would not recommend starting at 1.1mV as a starting point.
EDIT: @jfbs so been running this rom for some time now and i can honestly say this beats AOIP by a long shot now. rock solid, still constant 29xx .8%hr sleep, 24%hr (max 4hr15mins) at stress test usage oc'd at 1.4ghz @ 1.2mV. No rom/kernel sided bugs encountered.
