[Q] OTG and Kitkat - Moto X Q&A

I know that the moto x lost the native otg support with the kitkat update, but we still can access otg via a third part app. I bought a meenova today, and i want to use for expand my music libray. I was wondering: the use of these apps is an incovenient, or is good just like the native on jb? And, can i play the songs in the sd card with poweramp? There's a resolution to bring back otg suport on kiktak via root?
Please answer me, sorry for my bad engliesh.

I just got a Meenova last week, and I installed Chainfire's StickMount app. I did end up purchasing the paid version because the Meenova would never unmount. The paid version of the app can kill whatever app is preventing the Meenova from unmounting. It works great now. I just connect the Meenova, and it shows up as a folder that I can access through ES File Explorer. You should be able to play music files directly from that folder, although I have not tried it.

Yes, sorry, I should have mentioned that, although it is pretty clear by the fact that the StickMount app has "[root]" in its title.

Captivate features questions

I have had my windows phone for a couple of weeks, the HTC Surround. I went to the AT&T store and was looking at the Captivate. Did some quick browsing and to my surprise everything worked. I loved the icon format, the animated background, the ease of navigation, the multitasking, the sound was ok, it looked like flash was supported. I did not get to view any movies but the screen looked good. So I am thinking about exchanging my Surround. But I need a few questions answered.
1. Are there many available (free) apps
2. Does the software convert movies, and is the movie player included
3. Is there a FM radio built in
4. what is the available storage
thanks for any help

The phone running 2.1 does not support flash 10.1 but there are froyo roms in the development section that do.
The android market has many free apps.
The stock video player supports many formats but if you need to convert I'd suggest handbrake.
Currently there is no FM radio support and I'm not sure if there ever will be.
16GB internal and an external micro sd card slot.
Sent from my Captivate
3rd party apps?
Is the phone open for 3rd party apps or just the apps thru AT&T?
Is there an IRC chat client or a police scanner?
What about video news and AM/FM talk radio apps?
Any GPS apps?
thanks
You can sidelad apps if you read a "how to" here in XDA there are also more than 100,000 apps in the android market and I would say that at least 40,000 are free, switch to android, wp7 will die soon, plus the captivate will have true expandable storage. Seeing as how you can't even get official WP7 SD cards and u can use any SD with android.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
got it
AT&T exchanged my Surround for the Captivate (Galaxy S) today. So far very happy. Better everything except the Surround had more sound, but its an OK tradeoff. I liked this phone the moment I saw it. Plenty of free apps, there's even an IRC client. Thanks for the advice. I'll be hanging around here learning the phone

rooting phone
OK I got handbrake...not sure what is the right extension and resolution is best or what it will allow.
Does rooting your phone reset the phone back to default or do your settings and programs remain intact?
I enabled USB debugging mode, and now when i go back to the USB menu I now see 4 options (kies, media player, mass storage, and ask on connection)...is that right?
When i connect and choose media player the phone appears on my PC...if i choose mass storage, a new drive letter appears but i cannot access the phone...maybe it is becasue I dont have an SD card installed?
After rooting, should i delete the update.zip file on my phone?
thanks
Rooting gives you access to system files and folders. Nothing is lost unless you do a factory reset or master clear.

[Q] Doubletwist and removable SD

Is there any way to get Doubletwist to recognize and store my files on the removable SD instead of the phone's internal "media area"? I'm filling up the latter quite fast, while the external card is nearly empty. I can't find any setting in DT that lets you choose where to store music on the device.
I know that Doubletwist's publisher has been promising a "fix" for about five months now, but I figured someone here might have come up with something on their own.
Any help appreciated. TIA
Alternatively, any recommendations on a player with desktop iTunes sync functionality and flexibility in storage locations on the Bionic?
This is a known issue with the Bionic and DoubleTwist. I submitted a ticket with Doubletwist support, and they confirm that the software is not working properly with ExternalSD on the Bionic.
I uploaded my DeviceID information for them, and the support agent promised that it would be fixed in the next release. They offered no workaround. Sorry
I've been using Songbird with MediaSync to get around the issue, but it does no transcoding, which is less-than-ideal.
It's because Moto made /sdcard the internal memory and /sdcard-ext the external as opposed to the normal /emmc and /sdcard for internal and external respectively.
This problem is shared with the x2 and d3 and there is a fix, I"m just not sure if it was adapted to the Bionic yet.

I use Easy Phone Tunes Plus on my Bionic and it works fine for me. Easy Phone Tune has a free version that you can try to see if you like it. It's also available for PC or Mac.
Thanks for the info!
@kraamerica, does Easy Phone Tunes Plus store files on sd-ext? That's my bigger issue, really: Even with syncing only a portion of my music, I run out of space quickly. Kind of a bite to have the SD card there and not be able to use it.

I will look this afternoon when I get back to my PC. That's where you control the syncing and it's pretty good and letting you choose what you want to sync (including podcasts) I just can't remember if there is a "where".
When you 1st establish a connection through the setting's of the Easy Phone Application, it will show your "2" phones (one is your internal, the other external). You would chose the 2nd "phone" unless you have the SD card swap in place.
Then you go through the rest of what you what synced in the next section of the setup and you are good to go. Or so I would hope.

Do I need to root my Chromecast in order to stream local videos?

Just as the title says...Is it even necessary to root these devices? What are the "pros" of rooting it, if there even are any? And do I need to root my Chromecast in order to be able to do these "hacks" and "methods" I've read about in this forum in order to be able to cast local videos that I may have on my PC? I'm just kinda confused about that. I got my Chromecast just a few days ago from my local Best Buy store and I still haven't even taken it out of the box yet to set it up. lol I was really wanting to root it for a couple of different reasons....1)I know that having a rooted device opens doors for customization and flexibility of the device 2)I have been REALLY unsure if it's necessary for the Chromecast to be rooted BEFORE trying some of these methods to cast local videos from my computer. 3)I really want to root it, but I don't have one of those powered USB OTG cables & I'm kinda paranoid I'll screw something up in the process lol 4)I'd also be just fine keeping it "STOCK"/unrooted, just as long as I'll still have the ability to try these methods and cast local pc videos... 5)I'm REALLY excited about Koushik's unreleased Chromecast Android app...my Galaxy S3 is rooted, but will I also need to have the actual Chromecast device itself rooted also? Sorry about my ignorance on this subject....I've just been doing my research on here before setting up this thing & I don't wanna get too gung-ho and just set it up without acquiring root first....if it's really even necessary...

If you want to cast video from your PC to chromecast, you don't need to root chromecast. Just fire up your Chrome browser on your PC, install the chromecast extension, and you can then open your local video files in chrome, and "cast" chrome browser window (using the chromecast extension) to your chromecast that is connected to your TV.

Will I be able to watch and HEAR the movie on the TV? I've just seen different accounts from people saying that they could see the local video, but they had no audio...if I can't hear the movie, then what's the point of even watching it? lol What about rooting? Is rooting this thing even worth it? I don't really see the benefits of it....I have no interest whatsoever in flashing any "new" interfaces or anything else like that onto it. All I want to be able to do with it is have it function like it's supposed to right outta the box, with additionally being able to cast local content from my PC, and also be able to use that new phone app that Koush has developed but not released yet. As long as I can do those things I'll be a happy camper. Sooooooo...do I have no real need to root this thing? It's just buggin the hell outta me because I have a brand spankin new Chromecast sitting here on my desk still in the box...unused & unopened. It's killin me lol Because I want to use it sooooo bad and I thought that I would need root to do those things I mentioned, but I don't have a USB OTG cable yet(ordering one tomorrow).
Yes and no. Chrome cannot play .mov or .avi but it can play mp4 and h264. also it cannot decode AC3 audio. The reason is apparrently the guy who invented AC3 wants royalties and since chrome is free and open, no dice. I just received mine yesterday only to find this out the hard way.
however, im sure there is a way without rooting chromecast. It seems like you can 'cast' anything in a tab, even chrome apps. If someone could just build a chrome app that played everything properly or an extension with the proper codecs........

It depends on how the file is built. Most of the video that I have on my PC is MKV (AC3 AAC Audio and H.264 video), and I can cast it just fine.

Why is the chromecast still sitting on your desk unused/unopened? Why don't you plug it into your TV (or receiver) and see if it does what you want it to do?? Why are you first trying to figure out whether to root or not? All the necessary cables (HDMI extender, USB power) are included with the chromecast.

I haven't plugged it in yet because ALLLL I've been reading about is the automatic OTA. It basically patches the exploit to root the device...without you having any influence over WHEN it updates...it apparently just pulls a new ota down on its own.

Here are my thoughts on the matter. If you are still on the original firmware, it is extremely easy to root the device. However, you must use the file found on in this post because the original GTV Hacker method does NOT prevent the device from updating itself. If the device updates itself, then you will loose root, even if you were previously rooted. Use the GTV Hacker directions, but use the modified file instead of the original GTV Hacker file. The only thing that has been changed is the update script has been removed. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the process. Having gone through it, I can easily answer questions about it.
While it is true that there is no need or reason to root at this time, it could be a once in a lifetime shot to root. I realize that probably isn't true, but it could be true. Why take the risk when the root method is so darn easy.
But no, you do not need root to do any other things that people have been describing or to use any of the many streaming programs that are poised to come out once Google releases the final SDK and API. That is what is holding up everyone right now because the TOS on the Beta SDK prevents developers from releasing apps that use it to the general public. Once the SDK gets out of beta phase, then developers should be free to release their apps to the general public.

Again, the problem is that if you don't root and then protect the device against updates, the latest update from Google (actually the only update to this point) removes the ability to root. Now, there may be someone that figures out how to root the device even with the update, but there is a chance that won't happen. So if you even think you might want root, it is best to do it now before the device updates itself automatically.

DD for Windows is a program that allows you to do disk related tasks. There are other versions too if you aren't running Windows.
Personally I had issues trying to do this on a Windows 7 machine. I had to run the DD commands on a XP system for it to work. I kept getting permission errors with the Windows 7 machine. I tried lots of way to run the program under Admin permissions, but nothing prevented the errors.

dd.exe is a program to install the boot image to your flash drive:
1. Install the Windows (if you hvae windows) version of dd: http://www.chrysocome.net/downloads/dd-0.6beta3.zip
2. Open a DOS box (i.e. get a command prompt) by running
Code:
cmd.exe
3. Run the following command at the prompt:
Code:
dd if=gtvhacker-chromecast.bin of=/dev/sdX bs=1024

The way I understand it is you have the USB into the USB end of the 'USB OTG cable', the micro USB plugged into the chromecast, and the chromecast plugged into the TV (which is turned on). Then you plug the chromecast power chord into the remaining end of the 'USB OTG cable'.
The USB OTG cable should have three ends. micro USB male and female, and a regular USB to accept your flash drive.

Dblfstr has it right. There is no reason to unplug your TV. Simply don't apply power to the Chromecast until the directions tell you to. You do that by plugging in the OTG cable which should already be plugged into a power supply.
An easy way to stream any videos to the chromecast is to use Plex. The plex server will convert videos for your browser and you can cast the tab and its super easy to set up and it has a great ui and phone app too.

Photos, Music, Videos on SDcard by default?

I haven't had a phone with an SDcard for quite awhile now and on my wife's old Razr i there was no way to get pictures/music/videos to be saved on the SDcard by default, moving them for storage space became a hassle. Does the Z3c have a way to set Pictures/Music/Videos to be saved onto the SDcard by default?

I believe most camera apps have the option now to store the files on an external card. I guess that would go for pictures and videos.
I'm not sure what you mean by music.
There is no default music on the phone, so anything you put on the phone will probably come from yourself (And you can choose where to store it soooo )

Do you have a Z3c to check the camera has a setting to store to the SDcard? As far as music I'm referring to things like Play Music, Slacker/Beats/Spotify/etc music subscriptions that allow you to cache songs to storage for offline playback when you have a subscription.

Thanks appreciate it, I know it's painfully slow to transfer large amounts of pictures/music files from internal to SDcard so hoping you get to choose the location first.
Can you please check the camera settings also.
Both play music and the camera app have options to set the default location as the SD card.

About Spotify and such, I've got no idea since I prefer to always have my music with me and not to rely on streaming services.

Give Spotify a chance all the music you want for sonly some bucks a month and you can even download it to your computer/tablet/mobile so you can listen to it even when you are offline (all with one account).. so good.

So what's the difference between downloading my music and using something like Spotify?
I just love having my 60+gb music with me at all time. Especially when being out of the country, not having to rely on an internet connection (Talking about the streaming part only ofc)

I like it because of the playlists and that I have the same songs on all my devices without having to sync them - that's all
Also, the music is (kinda) already there, you don't have to download it
(sorry for the off-topic!)

Yeah if you have multiple devices then I can understand it.
I only have my phone as a portable device.
I've got all of my songs on my phone and pc, so that if one fails I still have a back up.

Just installed Spotify and with normal quality the songs go directly to the SD card :good:

Just format the SDCard through the phone and you'll have the best possible format.

Thanks for confirming that.
Can Apps be installed in the SD card? Seems Sony only has this feature for lower end phones. I have not seen evidence the Z3c allows to move apps to the SD. I am guessing that will be under Settings-->Apps-->(select an app?)
Thanks
***Update***
So it seems the answer is NO.

I read yesterday that Google is bringing back more "open" access to the SD card again via Lollipop. Finally!
not sure if this was resolved, but you can transfer all photos, video s and music to the SD card via Settings > Storage > Transfer Data to SD card.
Not sure if this means all future music will automatically go there. Can anyone confirm?

There is a periodic check to see if your internal memory is over 75% full. When it is, you get prompted to use this Sony Utility. Unfortunately for me my picture transfer fails (even though I have my camera app set to save it to SD Card). Which is how I ended up in this thread.
I'm living with this only because i know it will change once we get Lollipop.
Photos on the SD card
The problem I'm having is I accidently clicked my SD card for my photo storage and then I realized what happened and changed it back to internal memory storage but now all the photos I took while it was set to the SD option I can't find them now. I'm fairly certain I checked all the folders and the 10 or so photos I took are nowhere to be found.

Native OTG is it possible Devs on Nexus 6

https://youtu.be/XupKswS9Qz4
This is from my g3 with lollipop 5.1.1
I know we have OTG but you have to use Stickmount or a kernal for it show or get to it and not only that the system still doesn't show that it is mounted.
I was wondering if this is can be implement to our nexus 6 roms? Since we don't have a SD slot, I Would assume it would be a lot easier for apps to see it instead of use of Secondary App .
I believe you can use otg usb with es file Explorer... Without root or a custom kernel
https://youtu.be/4pe_F7FHm5g
Of course it *can* be implemented.
I use OTG with my stock rooted N6 just fine. ES file explorer lists it as an option under local. Other programs happily launch the file from there. For example if there is a movie I want to watch without bothering to move to the N6 it gives the option of launching it on my MX player. I can't think of a scenario it is not allowing me to do. It sounds like you want it to mount directly within the filesystem. True that might be nice but for my use not all that necessary.
It can be. I expect slimLP will have it when its fully featured, like they always have. Small change in fstab (RAMdisk) and an OS change to show it in the storage menu.
That s really sound promising I hope so I dont mind the work around just trying to have the most stable way possible
