Not sure for RealPlayer Cloud, but with Avia, you can Share items to the Avia app, though Avia can't necessarily play some items that are classed as video.

Realplayercloud is just wasting space, not sure why I haven't deleted that app yet. I have yet to get anything to play without uploading first to their server. Very stupid. Pay the $3 for Avia.

RealPlayer Cloud will only cast direct if (it thinks) the media is Chromecast-compatible.
On the plus side, it's free to use with Chromecast..
For Avia to work with Chromecast you need to buy the $2.99 add-on license.
On the plus side, Avia will try regardless (it will warn though), but it's not guaranteed to succeed.

Is it normal that Avia won't play a 1080p movie through chromecast? Its in mp4 format. However, 720p works fine. 1080 will play fine on my nexus 7, but always get not supported when trying to cast.

Short answer, yes.
Digital video consists of five main things: Container type, Resolution, Sample type, Sample rate, Encoding type and Bitrate
1080p is just the vertical resolution (1080) and sample type (p = progressive, as opposed to i for interlaced)
It doesn't say what the container type or sample rate.
Container type doesn't matter too much for Chromecast as its main formats (H.264) is not usually in a container anyway (though it's valid to have H.264 in a MOV, AVI or MKV).
Sample rate can be safely assumed as 30 or 60 Hz for US/Canada/Japan, or 25 or 50 Hz for Europe and elsewhere.
Most important for Chromecast are encoding type and bitrate.
Encoding type because Chromecast needs to know how to decode that format. Check Supported media formats for Cast devices.
Bitrate is also important because if the bitrate is too high, the wireless network will get saturated and the audio/video data won't arrive in time, which will cause pausing, skipping, jumping or complete failure to play. This is especially important for playback of local media since it can take twice the bitrate on the wireless network. Check WiFi Bandwidth and Router considerations for pictures.
Thus, Avia recommends 720p video... It'll depend on your casting device and network conditions as well - not all devices can fully use 802.11n bandwidth, and your Chromecast may not be getting optimal WiFi reception (and therefore limited bandwidth).
From Avia's FAQ:
Chromecast does not support many 1080p and high bit-rate video playback. Videos recorded at 1080p may stutter and buffer frequently while streaming to Chromecast. You can configure your phone to record at 720p to have a better casting experience.
Open your device’s camera application, go to video mode, and under Settings option change Video Quality to HD 720p.
For Samsung Galaxy devices: The default bit rates for video recording on Samsung Galaxy are too high. For an optimal casting experience, switch from 1080p to 720p, and change “Recording Mode” to “Normal” or “Fine”.

I'm having an issue with Plex and Avia. I have movies and TV shows on Plex and they stream to my other computers but when I try to access it on Avia it says no media found. Any ideas?

If other DLNA clients aren't seeing the media, then it's something on the Plex side... maybe the Plex database needs to be refreshed?

Better Way To Stream Local Video?

Does anyone know if there is a better way to play local video through Chromecast? I know we can play certain video types through the Chrome browser but it seems to create noticeable frame dropping.

In the chrome extension for casting the tab, there is a drop down next to where it says BETA. In the drop down you can change setting between tab and the whole screen.

Playing the video in the browser with Plex and then casting that works great.
Yea but native plex will be better. In my case my pc is not near my bedroom TV with the Chromecast so I would have to get up walk all the way to the pc bla bla to get it done like that.
I'm not putting casting down because it's been quite smooth for me put I can't wait for native plex.

i'd like a casting button to be built into mx player. that way, i can can browse samba shares from my server/nas from es file explorer and play the video with mx player, then cast to the screen. is that possible?

I do something similar with the BubbleUPnP app. My Dish Hopper and Asus Cube are DLNA capable so I choose one of those as my rendering device. Then I pick my shared videos as the source. The built-in media players of the Hopper and Cube then play the files over my local network that I select on my tablet. This also works for files on my tablet if I choose that as a source. I don't think this will work with Chromecast, though, as it is not DLNA capable nor does it support many codecs out of the gate.
When the Chromecast service gets pushed to the Google TV devices this fall, they will fill most everyone's needs. It will give the DLNA support for local files and the internet streaming capabilities of Chromecast with device control. If they also make a mobile PrimeTime app, then you will no longer need to use D-pad navigation for large libraries or channel guides.

Casting a tab?

okay, so when I try to cast a tab and play a local video file.. the video freezes on the TV, but continues to play on my computer.. the sound also still comes through the TV while its frozen. Why is this? And is there anyway to cast a local file from your phone?

What kind of local file (container format, compression type and bitrate) is it? It sounds like maybe the local file has a "glitch" in it or the file is using variable bitrate compression and the video bitrate exceeds what Chromecast can handle at the point it freezes.
Local file casting currently requires a rooted Chromecast, KyoCast installed on the Chromecast, and an un-timebombed AllCast/AirCast installed on your phone... The phone-local file needs to be a format Chromecast can play, and must be played in an app that allows Share to the AllCast/AirCast app.
Me too the issue happened on my chromecast even on youtube ... other pc work with me but one pc is showing this behaviour

That can happen if the transcoding performance of your computer is not sufficient for tab casting. I get that symptom if I attempt tab casting from my 2 GHz dual-core laptop, but not from my 4 GHz quad-core desktop. Google's beta tab-casting code just isn't very efficient.

It'll still depend mainly on how CPU-intensive the decoding of the video you're watching is. Whatever its left over needs to be enough to compress to whatever Chromecast needs.
It's more than that though. My system runs at only 12-18% CPU utilization while tab casting (depending on resolution), but the video is still a bit jerky, noticeably dropping frames about once a second. Dropping the resolution to 480p doesn't affect that at all. When I play the exact same internet stream via Plex running on the same computer and casting it to a Plex client, the video is perfectly smooth. The only explanation I can see for the poor performance along with low average CPU utilization is that Google isn't using enough buffering, and every time it gets overwhelmed by a momentary peak in transcoding, it stumbles and drops some frames. You can easily see and hear that the lag between the stream on the computer and the stream coming out of the Chromecast is only a fraction of a second, so that would support the insufficient-buffering theory.

The flip side to the coin would be that the Cast extension isn't using enough compression. More buffering would create additional lag between what's on the computer and out from the Chroemcast. There's already a fair lag.
More compression would mean higher CPU requirements but lower network bandwidth
More buffering would mean more lag
Being that the Cast extension is still in beta, I'm hoping Google either lets us adjust these settings (the previously-discovered hidden settings would be reasonable) or they are trying to determine the best compromise given the target market. The parameters are narrow enough that a Q&A optimizer would probably work.
My video is lagging: decrease buffering & use looser compression
My video is pausing, skipping or jumping: increase buffering
My video is still pausing, skipping or jumping: decrease compression

Actually I have been able to stream local content from my Plex Server using the Chrome Browser Tab Cast feature...
Open Plex Media Manager in the browser, Cast the tab to the Chromecast, Play the video, make it full screen and all is good.
Perhaps because the Plex Server does transcoding and his local file does not.
Most of my files are H264 MP4 files and AVI and other containers won't work like you said.

Actually it's two-fold in your case.
Plex Server is making sure Chrome can play it (ensures it's browser-friendly)
and
because you're tab-casting, the source doesn't really matter because the Cast extension is recompressing what appears on the screen to a Chromecast-compatible format. The Cast extension doesn't care whether it's video or PowerPoint or an animated GIF - at the point the Cast extension sees it, it's just a series of images for it to compress and send to Chromecast

May change (it seems they've actively adding/changing things) but as of a day or two ago, Avia's FAQ says this is not supported. There is a note about DLNA, if the subtitle file is already on the receiving device, and I have no clue if/how that would work for Chromecast, especially since Chromecast is not (yet) a DLNA receiver.
Subtitles are usually rendered on the Player side either from within the stream or via external file like a .srt.
I don't think CCast can ever fully support external .srt since it has no real filesystem of it's own to load the file from.
But the player app could be coded to show subs that are encoded into an MKV or other container that supports embedded SubTitles.
It might be possible that some sources could encode external SRTs into a stream going to a CCast which would probably be what aVia is doing.
Not sure if Plex does this at all since all of my content that requires Subs has been hardcoded into the video by me when encoded for storage on my server.
Plex does however seem to support putting subs into it's transcoded files if the Transcode profile definition is being read correctly by me...
Not sure if that feature is supported on their current CCast player app they are using.
I use handbrake to encode all my videos and set the subtitle option to burned in so I can watch subed anime on my chromecast.

Yup, this seems to be what HBO GO does, unless they have a really precise way of switching Chromecast from one stream to another (possible, that's what streaming media servers do).
I really appreciate the caption support there - makes the late-night viewing much easier, plus my hearing is poor these days.

It's really the best way to do it...The Text from a subtitle adds little to nothing to the Bitrate of a transferring stream, and Why store two versions when you can send one and let the client side decide to use it or not.
The only reason to use a SRT file is if the Video Container doesn't support an embedded Sub stream that can be shut off or if you need a Subtitle for a language not embedded in the Video container. No way to put every language into one Video file.
At least not yet! LOL

I don't think Handbrake supports hardcoding subs.
It does support adding subtitle tracks but I don't see an option to hardcode subs at all...
I admit though that I don't use Handbrake unless my main converter has an issue with a file...
I use Xilisoft since it supports hardcoding subs and I don't need to have multiple subtitle and audio tracks for my library.

I understand that the MKV can not see the subtitles .. but within the mp4 subtitles should be visible, Chromcast handles subtitles, do not believe me? look at this Youtube video Coca-Cola Social Media Guard
Put the subtitle to ON, do not you like the look? Click Options and choose the size you want, the color you want and the background color you want.
For example from the BubbleUPnP program should bring the option to turn ON the subtitles in the MP4, etc.

Still the case. The CC end doesn't support MKV so it's up to the player/ source end to unwrap it, determine what to send and transcode if necessary.

Chromecast supports MKV natively very well as long as it contains supported codecs.
Thanks for the replies guys. Not gonna have a PC for a while, and I hate being so limited. I'll look for proper codecs til I come into cash for a new pc.

Lots of confusion about MKV regarding CCast.
I was under the impression that MKV will STREAM on CCast, it won't direct play but it can be streamed to it easily using MPEG-DASH. Because Streaming a file this way pretty much strips the container entirely and just sends Video and Audio tracks in whatever codec was used inside the container. The CCast has no idea it's actually playing an MKV file so if the Codecs are compatible it will have no problem.
There is no device I know of that supports MKV natively though Hardware decoder. All devices that support it have software decoding and other MKV feature support built into the player itself or require Transcoding.
I know Plex is currently transmuxing and streaming MKV to CCast which is why they now work there.
But I'm betting your Bubble player on the CCast side is much better than theirs is as far as handling containers.
So maybe you can direct play codec compatible files where others need to send via DASH.
In the end the best way to handle MKV would be to have the Player handle most of the features so the only time external help is needed is to flip incompatible codecs.
And by features I mean the following:
Client side Subtitle rendering and selection (difficult on CCast with SRT but easier with Internal Subtitle tracks of MKV)
Audio Track selection
Chapter support
At least until Google adds this capability into the next Gen CCast OS.
one way is to convert your mkv software subtitles to mkv hardware subtitles
I believe the MKVToolsNix package has a tool called MKVMERGE that will insert SRT files into an MKV as a subtitle track.
Just be sure to test the external subtitle to be sure it's good before you do or you could make a mess.
This is one of those must have packages for anyone who like to play in the MKV universe.

WP8, Plex, & chromecast help!

So I tried to stream local mp4 480p video via browser to chromecast.
It lags really bad, I heard sound, but mostly stuttering/stuck picture.

I don't have an android phone.....
Also pretty sure the Plex app for WP8,does not support casting.
Don't want to waste $5 on the app.
So I install plex media server on PC,install $5 app on phone, and use phone to cast video?
Not sure if I understand right....
Can't I just cast from my pc/plex server? Seems that they just want money,so i'm forced to use the app even though it's extra steps.

Yes, it does
i tested the app.
only video, no audio. apparently it wont transcode on-the-fly like the app "MegaCast".
no reason from my side to use your app, unless you can do better on-the-fly transcoding, for example just transcode the audio stream and pass through the video stream.
THAT would be a reason to use your app!
it was 1080p h264 + dual language ac3 (i guess) in mkv.

Hi, Purah
Thank you for your review.
Did you cast some local video from your device, or you used DLNA server? And what chromecast version you are using?
Actually ViCast does audio only transcoding when it is possible and it looks like your file is a case. There is a known issue with ChromecastUltra which may lead to behaviour that you have described. We will add this note to the description.
Could you please provide us the file which you have tried to cast?

Excellent App
I have been searching for some time for an app to cast my mkv files with ac3 audio. Megacast trancodes but was dropping out part way through. Finally found vicast and it works perfectly. Thanks. Should ask will you be releasing a paid version to get rid of those annoying ads?

Hi, Thank you for the review
We are currently working on the paid version.
Why cannot i cast movie codec bluray.h264.aac.mp4 from my tablet to tv. On tablet it works perfectly.
Hi,
I've got this "HuiHeng WiFi Display Dongle", which is supposed to do Airplay, DLNA and Miracast. However it has very poor decoding capabilities. As a result, almost none of my local video files can be casted to this device.
My question is, is ViCast compatible with DLNA and/or Airplay? If not, do you have any plans to include DLNA support in the near future? Willing to pay for a reliable transcoding app for DLNA.
Thanks in advance for your time

I'm was planning to buy a Chromecast today to take away with me on my upcoming one month South America trip but the majority of my media is in MKV format, mostly x264 and more recently x265. if viCast can do x264 MKV then I will definitely give it a try. But can ViCast do x265 yet? If not, is this something you think will be possible? Recently I have started only encoding or downloading x265 files due to their tiny size so if I could cast those via the Chromecast I'd be a very happy camper.
Also, is your app able to find and view videos files in hidden folders (ones prefixed with a dot)? My kids use my phone quite a bit so I want to make sure any unsuitable TV shows or movies (or any other, ahem, "adult oriented videos") I might have cannot be viewed by them.
If it doesn't can I make a suggestion? I've seen so many people also request this in other apps - basically you allow support for hidden files and folders but password protect it so even if my 5 year old starts ViCast they can only see the vids in the main Google/OS Videos folder. But if I wanted to watch hidden files I could enter the password (entered during setup) and it would list them and allow me to play them. What do you think?
Superb app! Keep up the good work..
May i have one suggestion though? Please add a video zoom option so that any video size can be zoomed to fill up any screen from where it is watched ?
I have installed de this app but it's not working on Android 9. Every time i tried to cast something the app simply closes itself. The developers still suport the app?
