I have a HTC Desire C and when i connect to the computer, it installs the drivers and recognizes the device. However, the screen, buttons etc do not work on phone. I want to root this and install a new kernel, as i think that might fix the problem, but i have no way of enabling ADB. Is there anything i can do?

No. There is never any repsonse, no screen no buttons no vibrate no backlight on buttons. But it shows up when connected and installs drivers, so there must be something!
U are gonna have to give a back story of what you did to your phone in order for us to provide you with a fix... :/

Otherwise just fling it out of the window and get a replacement

I did say. Nothing at all. Never been rooted, not even bootloader unlocked. One day it froze, so my friend pulled battery. It never came back on
Seems like a hardware issue. Send it back if you got warranty otherwise you may be screwed... Sorry bro

It appears my camera LED stopped working. Does anyone know how to test it? I've tried a flashlight app but nothing happens.any ideas?

Did you try taking a picture or video with the light on in the settings? I also went into the hidden menu and did the Camera Test. That also should show you if the flash is working or not.
To access hidden menu you need to dial 3845#*925# or you can create a shortcut with Anycut.
Have you tried rebooting? That happened to me once when I was out and about and a reboot did the trick

If you know how to solder, you could always solder a new one on.

It could be a little bit hard to turn automatically the device on, because its like a torch. It will never boot by itself.
The only way to make this idea possible would be with the Hibernate Modus. But its hard to belive...

You can turn on your device with 'Secure Settings' Plugin in Tasker. Verified and Works well.
There is another alternative method, but its not working since the event listener is not responding when device is off. [But you might try if u are interested!!]
You can use the any scripter to run the script.
Prerequisite: Busy box + Rooted
Code:
input keyevent 6
It turns off the device, but this script not running when device is off to turn it on.
The title says it all, almost.
The skinny: took the sim out, rebooted, put sim in, rebooted.... problem. Now the tab sits at an unpowered screen and no button combo gets it to recovery or download.
Plug to computer and I get a message repeatedly to format the drive, and then remounts to the same message, forever.... :wtf:
Look in dev manager and all I see is the modem remounting.
No adb, no Odin, can't get anywhere.
Not really expecting a fix, just wanna see if there is one.
If my tab be borked, I'm in need of advice for another tablet.

Sounds bricked. Did you have a custom Rom? I had a i957 running cm10 that bricked right in the middle of connecting to a wifi. Don't know if it was just a coincidence or what but it didn't happen during our after a flash where you could expect a brick. I had the same symptoms as you do. I did have it repaired under warranty. The fix was software, Samsung was pretty vague. My guess is jtag would repair yours if it's out of warranty.

+1 to the jtag IF u have exhausted yourself trying to fix. Not bad to fix for $30 vice tossing it. Just try all manner of holding buttons for extended periods of time with and without power plugged in. Sometimes you catch a break.
Anybody able to point me to where I could get a jtag?

Check out mobiletechvideos. You'll probably have to to call them to see if they can do the i957. If they can't they might know someone who can.

I wonder if a usb jig for a couple bucks on ebay will at least get you to the bootloader to explore other options.
*if they make them for samsung 30 pin connector
going thru the same exact problems the OP has. in for results.

My i957 is defined as QHSUSB_DLOAD.
He wore a black screen. Tell me how to restore the boot loader
You can't. You're hard bricked. Jtag or warranty are your only options.

THIS REPAIR IS NOT MEANT FOR HARD BRICKED GALAXY TAB 8.9 DEVICES. IF YOUR TABLET WON'T SHOW ANY SIGNS OF POWER AND THE SCREEN IS BLACK DO NOT ORDER THIS AS THE SOLUTION ISN'T HERE FOR THAT ISSUE YET. IF THE TABLET DOES SHOW SIGNS OF POWER BUT JUST WONT BOOT OR YOUR AT THE EMERGENCY SCREEN THEN THIS REPAIR WILL WORK.

The device has a built in perv detector . It has recognized that you have been using vibrate for cheap thrills and has switched off until you promise not to do it again . Mine does it too !!
But I have always the vibrate on and I receive like 15/20 sms per day... How can I turn it back to on?

The setting for vibrations can be found in the messaging app itself
