[Q] Samsung Galaxy S / Droid noob needs assistance with external sd card query please

Hi everyone,
I just purchased the Samsung Galaxy S (i9000M) on the Bell network in Canada and I am new to droid and need assistance please. Everything is stock and non-rooted (I dont even know what that means or does)... LOL!!!
Forgive me if this is covered somewhere already but I upgraded from my Samsung Omnia WM6.1 Pro and I am not used to the droid lingo, etc.
I am looking to find out how you install apps, music, video, etc to the "external sd" card as I am used to my Omnia asking me what location I want to install items to and I dont seem to have this option on this phone (unless Im dumb and blind).
Can you install apps, music, video, etc directly to the external card? If not, Can you move them from the internal memory to the external card? If so... How? If this cannot be done at all then may I ask ... What is the external sd card for?
Thanks for your help...

Does no one here know or is no one willing to help?
You can't right now. Android 2.2 adds the install to SD functionality, but right now everything goes to the internal SD.
External SD card is for basically music and video or app backups right now.
Ahhhh... I see... Then I guess my next question would be... How do you put your music, videos, eto onto the external sd card? I am SOOOO used to Windows active sync and so dont really know what to do here.
Can you advise on this by chance?
Thanks a bunch...

Switching the sdcard and sdcard-ext?

Hey I know its too new phone but since we have root are we able to pull a trick to where the phone installed/downloads to the sdcard? The real sdcard not the internal sdcard.
I have a 32g sdcard but it seems bad that I can't use it and instead the phone uses the internal instead which is like 8gish. Anyways thanks I download alot of crap

If you are referring to downloading stuff from the internet to your external SD card, that can be done rather easily. Not sure about the stock browser because I don't use it, but Dolphin Browser has the option to change the download folder in the Settings area. I have replaced the stock 16GB external SD card (A class 4 card) with a 16GB class 10 SD card that I had from my Vibrant. All is working fine and that Class 10 speed is noticable.

yea. i use dropbox app not sure if it has the same option on the browser to change the download location.
i believe he means like the apps data lpp varouse twitters etc. i had to manuaslly copy my folders of apps info and data to internal or those apps wouldnt work. so my wimpy 8gb is down 1.2gb of storage. they motorola should given use 32gb internal like the xoom plus use are 32gb sd cards that would b awesome. i hope some devlopers can remap there apps to work with my 32sd card

Apps on sd card disappear???

Hello guys. I really need to solve this annoying problem.
So here's what's going on. I have app2sd pro. I used it to move all of my movable apps to the internal sd card. It's 11gb and has 1.84 gb free.
So idk how but sd card keeps getting filled. But that's another problem. (if you know how to solve it please tell me. )
The main problem is. All of the apps on sd card somehow decide to disappear from app drawer.
Even when I search for them they don't come up. So I go to app2sd and here's what I find on sd card tab: "no movable applications found from the storage" wth does that mean?
Anyways i decide to restart and all apps come back. But within 1-2 hours all of them disappear again. Help!!!
Thanks!

Storage Question S5 16gb

Hi,
I'm trying to be patient and wait for the 32gb S5 to be available but:
Here's my question:
After you get your 16 gb S5, and then you install all your must have apps,
how much space is actually left on the internal storage????
This is assuming you put all your music, videos on a sd card.
Thanks, Ken
approximately, 9 GB left, yes all music, photos, video and some apps are on sdcard
You don't need 32. I have a crazy amount of apps, i use google music and i have tons of songs saved on my SD card. i have about 8.5 gigs still left on internal storage. see screenshot.

available space is 9.11GB
With 50 apps installed, available space is 9.11GB.
Space taken by .thumbnails (302 MB) and whatsapp (271MB mostly pictures and videos)
My photos, video, music are on SD card.

Hi,
And thanks for all your replies. On my S4 I have 2.62gb in apps and backup program I use.
So, doing the math, I can install everything on the 16 gb S5 and possibly have 7 plus gigs left.
I think that may work out well then!!!!

I got about 8.4 go left and I have everything on my SD card and some of my apps. Before I moved my apps I had about 7.5 go left
TBH I was holding out for the GS5 32GB as well but finally caved as I didn't want to be stuck with the GN3 any longer. So far I installed my usual list of apps and I did move what apps I could and only the portion of the app that will transfer to the microSD card. My d/l of apps is usually about 1.5-1.8GB so after I moved the apps I have over 10GB left and I feel I can live with it.
That said IF Samsung doesn't start offering the GS in a 32GB version on the S6 and up I likely won't stay regardless of how much I like their hardware. For me you need MORE storage not less and the included bloatware was a joke. Oddly you could disable much more this time around compared to the GN3 including Flipboard but still I want more.
I use my S5 as my mobile media device and I have a 64gb external storage card cause my tab 3 doesn't support over 32gb. the fact that, one post said I don't need that much external memory is not a heavy user as others are.
My issue is that with os 4.4.x and later, they stopped allowing a user to write from device memory to external memory via apps. This sounds like an iphone setup to me. I have had all galaxy s series from the s2 to current s5 and to take that option to transfer from device memory to external storage memory via my apps is making me wonder about Android becoming more of an iPhone than an Android.

i dunno, i've apps on my s5 that are happily maintaining data on the sd card i put in.
The default Camera among them.

I second this complaint. Just another reason I want root.

@C0derbear.. my concern is the transferring of photos and videos from device folders to sd card folders using the prespective app for moving or copying on the S5

'Prespective' app? I'll need to look that one up. Not familiar.
Do you mean 'perspective' by a54studio?
I thought by perspective apps, he meant apps like file explorers.

I think Qwayke just made a typo. He meant to say *respective* apps.
Transferring using e included file manaher works fine to be sure. I do it all the time with pics downloaded from Web or FB.

Apps barely moving to SD

I just purchased a galaxy s5 and purchased an SD card with it. I've attempted to move a few apps to the SD card but majority of the app is still on the device storage. For large apps, it can be 300+MB on the device storage and then 30MB on the SD.
I haven't had a phone where I could add an SD card for a whole now (been using galaxy nexus for the past few years) but my I remember my old android phone moving allot more to SD. It used to be the opposite (a small amount on device storage and majority on SD).
This isn't just with one app either. It's over a few of them (Worms 3, Terraria and Card Wars just to name a few)
Any help or information on this is greatly appreciated. I attached one image just to show you what I am talking about.
The apk is moving. For the obb extension resource youre gonna need something called foldermount. Look it up
