So I'm in the market for a new desktop. Its been 8 or so years since a last purchased a PC. Intel or AMD and why? Not looking for super powerhouse ultra gaming rig. Just a reliable fast family computer. I've been looking at either gateway Dx series or HP elite.

Far better off with a custom built than any branded stuff...even if you get someone to build it for you...cheaper..in most cases more reliable and easier to repair if anything does go wrong. Mine is still going strong from a good four years ago and by strong I mean playing the latest games with ease...works out cheaper in long run too...
I know you said dont need a gaming rig...I myself dont really use it for gaming but just like to use games as a benchmark.
How much are you looking to spend?
Not a whole lot. 600 to 700. Buy.com has a gateway I was checking out. Dx 4320_17. 600 shipped.

Dude...
1. You live in the US. Heard of newegg.com? It'll save you a few hundred bucks. Just come back with the specs that you want and I'll help you balance the thing.
2. I personally support AMD (underdog syndrome), but you should support Intel at the moment (the Core i7 is awesome, and so is the Sandy Bridge series). AMD might have Bulldozer to brag about, but until it arrives in the market, I can't see the benefit.
3. For mid-range usage, AMD will definitely trump Intel when it comes to price-to-performance ratios.
4. If you wanna game a little, get a nice mobo with Crossfire and invest in a upper-mid range GPU from AMD/ATI. Once new games are semi-unplayable, invest in another GPU and Crossfire that rig. Their Crossfire solutions are much better than NVIDIA can ever claim to reach.
5. Invest in a good 20+" monitor. You'll love me for this.
I've never done a build your own system. I'm after something like a phenom x4 or x6, 1tb hd, 8gb ram. There are a couple on newegg in the do it yourself section that look pretty damn close to what I'm after. I just don't know good components from so so components. Like what type of ram, what brand motherboard. That kinda stuff.

Check Woot.com
I would say occasionally check sites like woot.com or slick deals and just
find the best deal you can on the PC with a decent amount of RAM and disk space. Even if you aren't heavy into games RAM, Disk space will be your friends. Im more of an intel fan boy myself so I would suggest an i3 or even an older dual core will do the job as well.
Problem is if you don't already have a monitor/keyboard - that $500.00 at Newegg is going to get you the same type of computer you'd already be purchasing.
My recommendation is to get the HP vs. the Gateway. I've worked on both types and the new HP's seem to be using a little bit better of quality equipment. Sure the onboard everything blows... but you could in the future rip out the mother board and get a video/sound card later.
Just make sure your not getting some funky type of mini-ATX setup otherwise you'll be throwing out the computer within a few years.
For a decent home built system you'd need about $1000.00
$200.00 for a monitor
$ 50-100.00 for the case
$ 100-200.00 for the PSU
$ 100 for a Vid Card
$ 75-100.00 for Mobo
$ 80-200.00 for CPU
$ 80-200.00 for Memory
$ 50.00 for decent keyboard/mouse
You can play with the amounts... but you would want to "future-proof" and try and get components that you can upgrade later.
I figure the mouse and keyboard I can use from my current setup. Both logitech. Same with my 23"monitor. Or I could run hdmi to my 58"plasma. So I'm cool there. The mobo looks like its amd 880 series. Mid tower. phenom II 6 core. 700 w psu. Blu ray. 8gb ram. For about $600.

I recommended that unit because it is quite future proof. 700w, Phenom II x6, decent mobo for single card GPU. It caters to the power user while having the potential to upgrade to a upper-mainstream gaming rig.
And it is within his budget and specifications (albeit not the 8GB RAM).

The combo is kinda ok if you are not planning on going crossfire. Like I said, the major weakness of the mobo is that it runs on 16x+4x crossfire, instead of 16x+16x slots. I am using its predecessor. My next major upgrade will be a mobo that does REAL crossfire instead
No crossfire here. I don't do pc gaming anymore. At least not enough to warrant a crossfire setup. A single 5870 will be 10 times what I need.

You should probably go for a higher end GPU if you can afford it. Saves upgrading in the long run and flexibility to support multi-monitor setup later.
hey guys, i have a laptop but i want to upgrade my processor. my laptop is.. well.. not the best lol. The make it quick and short. I have a hp-pavilion DV4 laptop Specs:
Processor: AMD Turion (tm) X2 Ultra- Dual Core Mobile ZM-80 2.10 Ghz
RAM: 4.00 GB
i would like to know if i should get a intel i3 (if i can even run it ) or what should i change or is this the best processor i can get? ive been reading online but its confusing , so i asked here because im trying to learn how to dev and i want a good laptop

Ok let me put this simple you can put an intel chip in a amd socket. Its like puting gasoline in a diesel truck. Simply doesnt work or fit for that matter

That and you can't really upgrade a laptop. 1. no one sells processors for them. And 2. Cracking open the laptop to get to the processor will void any possible warranty it might have.

Your best bet is to get a deal off ebay ive goten a bunch at like 4 in the morning because theres alot less people to compete with. If your looking for something cheap its not going to be powerful same thing in phone world too. If your lucky you could mabe get a laptop with a broken screen and replace the screen and save a bunch but you have to do alot of research. Stay away from dv7s and dv6000s and dv9000s they have video chip issues where they stop showing video(hps version of the red ring of death). Craigslist might be a good idea too becouse when people are poor they sell **** for what ever they can get but craigslist has no return policy like paypal and ebay do. Good luck i hope i gave you some good insight.

Not always true. I have an Acer that the CPU can be upgraded. I found a faster one on newegg but didn't get it. You need to do your homework before buying crap too. Know the CPU, chipset, form factor of the CPU, etc. You will also produce more heat and consume more battery with a bigger engine in it. You might be able to go the route of replacing the hard drive with a solid state and faster/lower cas ram. I think you'll notice more of a speed improvement with those two things than just a CPU. Put the maximum amount of ram your laptop chipset can support. Get matched ram (don't mix different brands and models of ram). My old 1.2 c2d Intel Acer can run circles around my gf's laptop that is years newer and faster CPU than mine. I just put the maximum, fastest, matched ram in it, a 7200rpm drive with a bigger cache, Arctic silver heat sink compound on the CPU, gpu, and (I forgot the third major chip, I'm having a brain fart). I also put an old and small heat sink on the brain fart chip. Hers is like maybe a 2.2 newer generation dual core Intel and mine is still quicker. I don't know why but it is. Way back when,I did a lot of research before I bought the Acer and knew under it's hood was no slouch for the price. It wasn't no alien ware but it was decent.
Why don't you post your budget, and what you plan on using the laptop for? I'm sure people will be more than happy to suggest stuff to you if they come across something!

If you want to dev on a laptop, you need something of the i5 or i7 range, as compiling takes a lot of CPU and RAM. However, for the price of a good laptop, you could get a really good computer. I would recommend building your own over a laptop, but if it has to be a laptop, something in the $700 range would be good.
Look at Samsung's ultrabooks.

If you want a good laptop with build quality in mind, look for Asus and Lenovo ones with a Sandy bridge processor along with a Nvidia GPU.
I personally like the Asus G & K series along with the Lenovo Y series (570).
Going to warn you that if you build your own then watch out for pricing. Currently most of the tech companies are overpricing everything due to the thailand lfoods and shortages of HDD's.
But if you do decide to make your own computer, visit places such as tomshardware.com / overclockers.net / hardocp.com / anandtech.com and ask around...
Just sayin

If you feel like building one, feel free to PM me, i will help you with practically anything you need. I've built around 10 PC's for family, friends and myself.
Currently have an
i5 2500k
GTX 570
4 GB DDR3 RAM

500 GB 7200 RPM HDD
I once picked out parts for my cousin that lived in New York, me in Minnesota and helped him build his own through the phone. Granted it took 3 hours, but he loves it.

Hello my Fellow XDAers!!
I am doing some minor upgrades to my computer and would like some advice or suggestions. I got this for a gift for x-mas, it's not a terrible computer, but can use some upgrades.
I play Star Wars: The Old Rebublic and do much programming using eclipse, android kitchen, excel, notepad and photoshop. I dont hardcore game, but I'd like to play with decent graphics.
I plan on building my own comptuer in about a year or two. So I don't want super expensive parts.
Specs:
Dell Inspirion 546
Windows 7 64 bit
Amd Athlon 2 x4 620 processor @ 2.6 ghz
4gb of memory DDR2 PC2-6400 UPGRADABLE TO 8
Ati Radeon HD 3200 Graphics crossfire capable
300 watt stock psu.
My first step is a PSU, video card and memory
Video card- HIS H675F1GD Radeon HD 6750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity
PSU- COUGAR RS-Series RS450 (CGR R-450) 450W ATX12V 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply
Memory I'm not sure yet, any suggestions would be great.
Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!
That is an awful PSU! One day it blow your computer up, your house up, and you will die in a ball of fire while you sleep.
You don't need more than 4GB of RAM so spend that money on a better PSU. Try a Seasonic 650W
Edit: Don't buy a PSU on it's power rating alone. A bad 600W one will kill you just as fast as a bad 400W one.
PSUs aren't that expensive, and if you have more than one hard drive and disk drive, you will need a better PSU, got for at least 600 watts. Also it would help to tell us what your budget is.
I would go for a better PSU, at least 600W. Check the Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 600W. That's a real good PSU.
If you could spend any extra money, check for an extra hard drive.
I've upgraded my system with a SSD. That's one of the best upgrade I did in years.
Around 250, I don't want to put too much into one I'm gonna rebuild next yet.
So you guys think the graphics card is cool? But the psu sucks?
And 600w won't fry my motherboard? I cant find real specs on this motherboard because its made by dell. I have an ocz and cooler master I think I saved.
Thanks all, look foward to the feedback.
Sent from my ICS Splashed using Tapatalk
Go go 8GB of RAM
A PSU won't fry a board unless there is something wrong with on of them.
Sent from my iPhone 6GS using Tapatalk.
Okay thanks. I wasent 100 percent on a dell propriatary board.
Ill post some links to psus and you guys give me your opinions.
I picked a pretty solid graphics card for the price, I take it? No one mentioned anything about it.
Ill get 8g. I've been looking at hyper x, basalisk or g ram. Not sure which one I want to get. I can't oc my bios, so iam thinking of just getting some crucial ram.
My biggest bottle neck is the video card though. Not to mention I can run my intergrated graphics in crossfire mode with my new one when I get it. Thought that was cool when I looked it up on amds website.
What I find shocking is I play world of warcraft on high settings. With over 45 fps in raids and tor everything is on low and get around 35 fps. I thought it would be a little better than low, but I thought wrong.

There's no point going OTT on any one component in that system. At best it will be mid-range until you throw out everything and start again from scratch. The HD6750 is a weak card though. I'd suggest:
PSU:

GPU:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-...s-eyefinity-hdmi-2x-mini-displayport-2x-dvi-i
Forget about the extra RAM. Seriously, you don't need it.

Looks good ill check them out when I get home. The card looks big my mothrboard is the smaller atx form factor and not full as is the case its mid size. It should fit though.
I'm almost tempted to buy a bigger and better case and move everything over. It almost makes sense, when I do get the money to go hardcore, ill have the case already.

If a self-build is something you want to pursue, it may be a good idea to give up the idea of upgrading what you have and just start building a new PC from scratch. Buy what you can, when you can, until you have a working build and then sell the Dell to get some of your cash back. Start by getting the case you want and go from there.
I've been building PC's for ten years and that's what i would do. PM me if you need help with any part of it.

I'm actually going to be throwing a SSD into my laptop. Even without it though it is really quick. Plus it has dual video cards. The standard Intel card runs when you are doing simple stuff like browsing the web to save power. Once you start something that is graphics intensive the Nvidia GT 630M kicks in.
I play Diablo 3 on max settings on this thing just fine.
Hp envy spectare is something that you would like.. i am an architect so i use AutoCAD all the time.. this thing handles it well.. I've seen my collegues useing it..
But my personal suggesstion don't go for much small screen if you use CAD..

I'm looking to build my own PC, and have done as much research as I could to make sure I'm picking the proper, quality parts. I just want to run my build past you guys to see if anyone has any suggestions, or if I'm spending too much money on a certain component, etc. Also I want to double-check that everything is compatible (Can I use those 2 monitors with my GPU? Do I need a miniDP-to-DVI adapter or can I run one from my MOBO? Will everything fit well in my case?) I'll be using the computer to multitask with different types of software, along with some gaming.

I wouldn't recommend Crucial M4 SSD ( at least for now ) since it's having random freezing issue and it's taking forever for them to release a new firmware update.

I think 8gb is enough... especially for gaming...but - shrug - It depends on what programs he run when he multitask.

I wouldn't recommend Crucial M4 SSD ( at least for now ) since it's having random freezing issue and it's taking forever for them to release a new firmware update.
<- I have the 64gb M4.

That's exactly the one I have. I've had it for a year now. I haven't experienced any freezing. I always update FW, just because, but yeah, no issues.

Maybe it doesn't apply for everyone, but if you look at their forum - a lot of people are having that issue ( including me ). I'm also on the latest firmware. ( 000f )

Lol yes you're lucky.
The random freezing issue is ticking me off... I wish they would fix it already! D:

I'm gonna do some reading up on the issue.
I'm a member at overclock.net, but I haven't visited for a while. I'm more of a modder than a hardware guy, but I do try to stay current. I might spend some time there tonight.

thats pretty hardcore hardware right there
If you go with and AMD cpu it will save you money, I have a 3.2GHz dual core (i believe) and it's a good one. mind you I think the total for my computer came out to almost $900.
and I think for the HDD western digital is usually cheaper and it's really all the same. I have western digital and I'm most likely gonna buy a green HDD 1TB; I saw one for about $90 which I think is a pretty decent price. I've seen those seagate barracuda ones going for about $10-20 more
Personally I LOVE the Kingston HyperX SSD's. I have one in my desktop and I have never had a single problem with it. I tried both Intel and OCZ SSDs and they both failed on me.

AMDs are usually easy to overheat than Intel processors. Nothing beats the Ivy Bridge

Go with the i5 2500k if you're looking to overclock. Do not get an OCZ SSD, they are horrible.

I've been using my OCZ for a few months now with no problems... Running my systems and as many games as I can fit off of it and it's been great. One note to make about SSD's (in case you don't know, if you do, hopefully I'll help someone out) but you never want to defragment because this adds unnecessary writes (which kills the drive) and you'll gain no performance. Right after I installed windows, i had 25% fragmentation.
As far as your build it looks solid. No matter what you get, you'll hunger for more haha. Make sure to get something crossfire capable so you can crossfire your Radeon if you want to expand the video life of your PC. You may want to look at upgrading your power supply to at least a 750 if you ever plan on running another video card.
I just built a new rig a few months ago and I used Asus's sabertooth 990 series since I went AMD Bulldozer ^_^. 16gb of G. Skill ram DDR3 1866, an Nvidia 550Ti and a 120GB OCZ SSD. So far there has been nothing I've thrown at this PC that it couldn't handle. Skyrim, Deus Ex, SWTOR and Diablo 3 all play at full settings all AA turned on.
What are you paying for that setup if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks for all the tips guys. That GPU only has one DVI out on it, and my monitors only have DVI in... Will I have any problems if I run one monitor through the DVI port and one through a MiniDP-to-DVI adapter?
As far as memory goes, I'm just going to start with 2 DIMMs and buy 2 more sticks if I feel like I need it. The programs that I'd like to run to multitask include Ableton, Photoshop, a couple medium-high end games (at max settings, of course ) a stock-trading platform, an internet browser with several tabs (though Chrome hardly sips any memory anyway) with MS Office stuff. I really want to take advantage of dual monitors!

Thanks for the tips. Did not know that about SSD's. The 7850 is Crossfire ready so I'm good to go there. That whole build comes in at $1500, not including a keyboard/mouse or OS.

No problem, glad I could help
I recently shelled out around 12 or 13 hundred for my setup, but didn't get anything for storage besides my SSD since i had 750gb worth of storage that I migrated over from my old machine. I'm an AMD man myself, and I'm loving the UEFI bios on my ASUS Sabertooth 990FX. The software that ASUS includes with the board allows you to monitor Also, you can't beat 8 cores I was able to overclock using the stock board settings to 3.9GHz on my 8120 FX proc. Its only 159.99 on newegg right now and all FX series are black edition proc's which means complete control over your proc settings. I'm using a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo for my CPU cooler. Its pretty big, so if you look into this cooler make sure your case has room for it, but im running a steady 34C and haven't seen it go above 40. Some people report as cool as 18c.
As far as your Video card, there are tons of cards out there with multi DVI support, you may want to look at another manufacturer, as I don't see you getting true video performance out of a usb adapter. Although I've never used one, I suspect it will be a huge bottleneck.
Here are a few images of the AI Suite included with the Sabertooth 990FX (used splashtop to grab them since im at work hehe)
