What's the point of rooting an active if you can't do anything with it. Now you can't even get the new at&t update. Someone explain what the reason is please besides the thrill of pointless tinkering.

I do lots of stuff with my rooted S4A. Wanam Xposed, Pie Controls, frozen ATT bloat and Avast Firewall to name a few things. It even text messages and makes phone calls!
New update=yawn. 4.3 isn't a big deal (unless you want a Gear).

It depends on what you're trying to accomplish. I personally have root so I can fully utilize Titanium Backup to backup my entire phone, block ads, use Folder Mount to force files to be saved to my external SD card, install Cerberus as a system app to utilize more of its features, and install Xposed Framework and Xposed Modules to endlessly customize my phone and add additional functionality to it. It's up to you whether or not you think rooting is worth it. With that said you can always update to the official AT&T 4.3 firmware using the Odin files found in this thread.
Good points for your purposes granted. But I loved to change roms on my gs2 until I found cm, then I stuck with that one as my fav. I'm just frustrated that it is not that easy or even possible anymore, at least with this phone that I like and plan on keeping for a while.

Hey Devo, you run xposed framework on the stock rom with no issues? I had some problems with it on my sgh-i537 and some of the modules wouldn't work at all. If I tried to install the hypderive device tools(shutdown) menu, when I use the shutdown button my phone locks up and just shuts off, no menu ever appears. I really like alot of the hyperdrive functions, I'd love to be able to add the hyperdrive tweaks too, but never had any luck there either.
As concern me I will sell my s4 active No Roms No updates :'(

Yeah, I run Xposed on my stock ROM. The only issue I ever had was a few days ago when I updated XPrivacy and the phone refused to boot. I had to flash the Xposed disabler with SafeStrap. I run the GPE ROM in slot 1 so I can't speak to the way Hyperdrive works. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Ok, I see. so whatever is in your slots can affect your stock rom as well? I also ran GPE in another slot for a while and I liked it, but with the aroma installer and the hyperdrive tweaks, it really is something I'd like to stick with. I wish I understood more about what is shared and what isn't between roms in slots and the deal with the locked bootloader. We're a long way from Windows Toto, lol. Then again, I do networking, not programming so much.
So, do you run the advanced power menu module on your stock ROM? I really like the HyperDrive version, I think it's called HyperDrive Device Menu or something.
I want to say I installed wanam and xposed from apk files, no flashing. Maybe I need to start there. Thanks again.

I don't think that the Rom slots impact each other unless you are running low on space.
I don't have am advanced power menu and I'm not sure what the Hyperdrive one looks like. That said Wanam had a couple of options that extend the power menu that are worth a try.
Everything I've installed has been by directly installing an apk. Except for dark dialer, dark contacts, and call recording.

thanks for the info man. I will try the wanam menu and see, think I tried it once, but still had the issue with the button locking up. One thing for sure, installing these other ROM's gives me plenty of ideas of how to change my stock ROM! BTW, I love D.C. saw the FW's at the National Harbor last year, good time. You need to open up the zip file and look inside the folders to see what files are flashed and where they ate flashed. This will tell you what files were changed our added then you can manually remove them. I would also ask the creator to post a zip that removes the necessary files to return to stock. It should be easy enough.

Quite a few apps don't work without root access. Plus it is necessary to be able to use tethering without a separate plan. Battery doctor, quickboot, app quarantine, and titanium backup are just a few on mine.

Has anyone had a problem with the intial setup for Good for Enterprise on custom Android ROMs? I installed it (using an issued PIN) on stock eclair on my Captivate and it worked fine. I then rooted, backed it up via TIBU and restored on Froyo and it still worked fine. The same process worked recently on Gingerbread. However, I have tried multiple custom Froyo ROMs and 1 GB recently and if I try the initial setup (with a new PIN) on anything other than stock eclair (even rooted), it will stop at "retrieving policies" and never complete. I then have to ask for a new PIN from my IT support and revert to eclair and finish the setup, backup, and restore on the later custom ROMs. Has anyone seen this and have any idea why? My IT support has no idea. I am not in a policy checking for root access and it does continue to work with root.
EDIT: I wonder if it is that the device name used in build properties is referenced during that step and it fails due to an unknown device...
Also, I have found that after I have it working after a certain PIN used, if I ever restore to an ealier point (due to a theme gone wrong, etc) then it stops syncing even if the restore point is AFTER I had it working with that PIN. It seems like the local software either is exchanging a dynamic password with the server or there is a message index, etc that has to be in sync. Any thoughts?
When in the Good setup screen, go to Menu>Device Info. Does the Phone number appear? I've been using CM7 just fine with Good but after the last few nightlies, Good no longer works. The phone number doesn't appear in the device info. Good thinks there is no phone network present.
I am a heavy Good user, unfortunately also addicted to changing ROMs on a frequent basis. I have never had an issue with Good running on any ROM, just on restoring from TiBu. I can flash new kernels, themes, etc, and Good works just fine. If I re-flash the same ROM, it resides and works just fine. It is only when flashing a new ROM I have problems. Good appears to restore OK, but won't pull new emails to the inbox. I ave to get a new PIN and re-install.
Same here.. i am addicted to flashing as well.
I tried Titanium backup to backup and restore to new ROM, but somehow Good just keep crashing after i put in my password.
I am sure I can ask for new pin, reinstall and what not.. but how often can we ask IT people (for my company at least) for new pins, until one day they may say, bugger off you ROM addict!
Finally figured it out, I think. The trick is to NOT have Good running in persistent mode when you do the backup with TiBu. IOW, reboot and backup with TiBu before you start Good and log in. I did that the last couple of new ROMs and it restored and worked just fine.

Good with custom roms
Just to share a recent experience on that topic:
I wanted to have a custom rom but need GFE for my work which of course has a policy of no root with GFE.
So after a little research and useful info from this forum I figured a very simple way to do it, as long as you don't consider root as critical for your day-to-day stuff
1. Install your custom rom which most likely requires rooting
2. Install SuperSU from the Play Store and use it to remove root completely
3. Install and activate GFE
That's it!
Hoope this helps someone else how got a little scared to have to go through scripts and stuff to do this

Does this still work?
I too need GFE on my Galaxy S4 but am sick of the poor battery life. I tried SlimKat and Google Play Edition roms, and removed root using Super SU in both cases. But GFE gives a message "Not supported for this type of Handheld". . Not sure if GFE is looking for a TW based ROM.
I will give it another go using Carbon ROM. Still, any other advice / experience on getting GFE working on a custom ROM would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

You quoted a 1 year old post, might be hard to get a reply. Also this is for the S1, while the app (GFE) might be the same, the ROMs definitely aren't.
That being said, chances are that the app was updated to prevent that workaround. You could flash a TW based ROM and test it though.
Thanks for the reply. I will try posting a fresh question in the Q&A thread in case anyone has more recent experience with GFE. Cheers.

There is an xposed module for this.
Hi, are you referring to Wanam Xposed which has a "fake official system status" functionality?
As I understand, Xposed needs root, but Good for enterprise doesn't work on a rooted handset. Can Xposed work without root?
Also Wanam Xposed is meant to work with TW based ROMs whereas I don't want to go back to TW based ROM unless it is extremely light.

I'm a bit confused here, Custom ROMs are pre-rooted. Therefor, if you're not on TW, you're rooted.
And yes, Xposed does require root. As for Wanam, I duno if it works on AOSP but best way to know is you try
Thanks for replying.
Supersu has a Full Unroot functionality which removes root.
Yes I will try, but every failed attempt sends an email to office admin so I have to be prudent.

The link above mentions that root is required while installing XPosed, but later it can perform without root. Is this correct or not?

I have never personally tried it without root but you can test that fairly easily. I expect it would depend on the module you're using, some require more permissions than others.

Flash rbheomax's kernel (I believe both camera's work in V1), or pattyboi's kernel (both cameras work), and use Titanium Backup to remove the apps/bloatware. They shouldn't come back after that but if they do, you can always go into Play Store > Settings > Auto-update Apps and set it to Do not auto-update apps and they will quit re-installing. If you're using Flashify to flash the boot image then make sure you reboot the phone before attempting to remove the apps; if you're using TWRP to flash then you don't have to worry about that.

Has anyone else tried this kernel and can verify there are no issues? I seen HTC has a new update for my phone and wonder how that would work:
Software uptate: 1.49.652.3
This update contains important enhancements and bug fixes, including:
ALERT: Patch for critical security vulnerability ('Stagefright')
- Device Stability improvements, bug fixes
- New and or enhanced features
- Further improvements to performance
Right now, my version is 1.48.652.2
I did a backup, then installed the RUU, let their software update install to keep from getting notified about it incessantly, and then put my kernel back with the application backups.
Hi everyone!
I have a rooted Z3C and it is a fantastic phone, I love it. The problem is that I bought a television sport service that includes the possibility to watch games on your phone, it's called Bein Sport. This app is able to detect root and refuse to play any videos so the service I bought becomes kind of useless
The worst part is that I don't want to mess around, just want to watch games on my phone and use the service for what it was thought. Si I thought i'd give a shout here, has anyone been able to bypass that annoying feature? I don't even understand why they don't like rooted phone
thanks!

There is an Xposed module for masking root on your phone, not sure if it will work or not. There is another Xposed app that offers help as well.
Installing Xposed can sometimes be tricky, make sure you find the right arm zip or you could be facing bootloops.

I use Xposed, it's very popular and works fine on the Z3c. I think the emphasis is to read about it before you do it, as many people rush in, go to downloads, install the one with the latest build number and then come crying to the forum about bootloops.
The fact that you have read ahead on the page before you did anything assures me that you won't mess it up :good:
If it reassures you, I am using xposed-v80-sdk22-arm.zip on a 5.1.1. build. But there are more recent versions out now, although I don't know what the advantages of using those are. Perhaps later versions cover the use of MM. Can anybody enlighten me on that?
Edit: Once you have flashed the installer in recovery, restart the phone and then install XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4.apk
With that installed and running you can find the modules and install them.
Each install or change of settings requires a restart.

rootcloak im unsure as i have uninstalled it (didnt need it) and xtouchwiz i hacent retried. something (maybe a setting in xtouchwiz) was giving me some sim card pop up that wouodnt go away on boot and wouod make me reboot to recovery to do something to ky sim that just failed and the pop up would be there upon boot. i had to odin to get rid of it. it happened 3 times and each time it happened i had rootcloak and xtouchwiz installed. since removing both i hacent had a problem. so no i didnt and i believe one of them caused the problem. if anyone is using both or one or the other let me know what you do and dont have enabled or disabled in each module.

I appreciate your feedback. It would be inaccurate for me to reply with mine as I use the unlocked firmware. But in this case, the results were the same more or less.

i have since installed xtouchwiz and have no problems i turned a few things off that were on by default. i turned off fake system status and the disable scaling feature that was on. it works. rootcloak i have also reinstalled but i don't think it works. im not sure, i know snapchat has problems logging in if your rooted and i am experiencing this problem with or without rootcloak so i believe it is not working but i could be wrong.
Hi, I am new to xda and Android as a whole. So I have rooted (SM-G935A) and I can't find any way to install xposed because TWRP doesnt support the snapdragon variants. Do you mind telling me how you did it?

I have Oneplus 3t with 7.1.1 android. Only issue I am having is that if I turn Notification light on, there is no option to turn battery full, charging, and low notifications off. With them on i cant use the light at all, because it will light up my whole bedroom. I red from online that Light Flow is the best app that could have sleep time without notifications etc. but when i tested it, it could not turn those charging lights off. Is there some way to bybass this? Never seen issue like this before. I am not sure is it just bug that disable option is missing or such. I have been using this feature since 2013 with nexus 4 so unbelivable its missing from this.
It seems custom rom is only way to fix the problem, but what is stable enough for daily use? If I could fix this issue on normal rom I could use it for years, because there is nothing that i am missing or what i would need more from my phone.
If you don't want to change ROM, you can use Xposed and GravityBox, unless you use Android Pay or other SafetyNet protected apps

Are you rooted with SuperSU or Magisk? If the latter, then you can download Xposed through the Magisk Manager, then install Xposed Manager and GravityBox app.
GB has the feature to control LED for all apps, unfortunately the free version is limited to 50 reboots (full version costs about 4 USD).

If I were you, I would dirty flash current ROM (install it on top of currently installed without removing data), install Magisk and then proceed.

Is there any rom that would contain this automaticly without needing to do those things?
I have messed up my whole phone every time I have tried to update, because of the encryption. I am pretty sure that dirty flashing will mess up once again. Last time I tried magisk It did not work for some reason so i had to install supersu instead, because i allways need to root for adblock.
The second thing i hate in this phone is the constantly coming reminder that there is update avaible. With going to custom rom or such i could get rid of that problem too.

I don't think so and even there are such ROMs, and I wouldn't depend on them. Consider doing a clean flash and/or another ROM.

The encryption is most likely not an issue, at least I didn't have any problems with it.

This is the nature of stock ROMs, unfortunately, but you should be able to hide this type of notification (long-press on it and disable the notification, but it's not always possible).

When i got phone and updated and rooted it i managed to get it not to recognise anything meaning soft bricked. Then time went by and i decided to update phone when I was told the root will stay, but then encryption once again soft bricked everything. Never seen **** like that on any phone so I did not know there is such thing. Just one step more to make things harder.
Now I am wondering does that encryption mess things up today when i will install paranoid 7.3.1. Atleast i put up fastboot etc. ready on my computer so it will be easier to fix.

It is said that one should format data when migrating from OOS to custom ROM.
