through much trial and error, I am now "Activation Screen" Free.
Here is a list of what to do:
Download "root uninstaller" from Play store..(the version you need shows an Android Icon)
Use it to remove ALL Sprint related processes/APK's
Reboot your phone
This worked on mine, hope it works on yours.
Mine is rooted, s-off, TWRP flashed, and Custom "Bad Boys" Rom
Nice! Good job brother! Thanks for contributing to XDA

All you need to do is delete "htcsetupwizard.apk" in system apps folder. If you don't want to wait until the setup wizard lets you into the system follow these directions.
1. Boot into recovery
2. Mount system
3. Use file manager to get to system/apps and delete "htcsetupwizard.apk"
4. Unmount system
5. Wipe dalvic
6. Reboot to system
7. Pick your butt and sniff your finger.
On second thought you can skip step 7 if you want to but that's entirely up to you.

I had it hanging on activation after installing BadBoyz kitkat rom. I installed the newest Radio from Dec. rebooted, and didn't get hands free activation again at all.

I've tried this, but still does work, any way to get rid of this annoying thing?
Rooted Stock 4.4
Edit: A few questions to ask.
I am able to bypass HFA, but I had to delete the .apks associated with what ever makes it happen.
When I install a ROM I always encounter HFA*makes me not want to install others, since I set-up the ones I use now so I don't encounter it*.
Are devs just implenting this cause of it's sprint branding, I understand why they would ,but crap is annoying.
Anyways, I'm reluctant to remove it, but it gets quite annoying when installing a rom it so happens to rear it's ugly head.

I followed those instructions too, well except #7, tempting as it is. No dice. HFA, pops back up again. I'm rooted, but am afraid the nasty HFA will muck up my Fire water S - Off process. Any other ideas?

Which apks did you delete/rename to disable it? I have been renaming quite a few with no luck. Are there more than one app that can run HFA?

If you use Rom Toolbox or any other rooted App Manager App, just remove Setup Wizard, and Self Service

Hi Robert, this problem strikes me recently. I just purchased a HTC 10 Sprint outside of the States (Vietnam to be exact), unlocked bootloader, S-off, install latest twrp, and finally flashed ICE 3.6.0 on it.
Everything run smoothly until I got to the 1st setup process, after choosing language, there is HFA and my phone could not activate and I stuck there forever.
I lets it run 5 times, didn't do the trick. I tried to delete htcsetupwizard.apk as you said but could not find it either. I googled around and ppl tell me to delete HtcOMADM_SPCS.apk but it still did not do the trick.
I tried to flash ROM several times again (the same one) with different Magisk & SuperSU but still same sh!t.
Could you please help out?

Root your phone. Install any decent root app remover from play store. Search in its system apps for the keyword "sprint". And see what happens after removing them.
The problem is that HTC has put this service with different names on different models. So the same name may not be applicable for every model. So finally its a hit and trial.

Hello Guys,
I’m a Sprint HTC Hero owner who is trying to get CM 6.1
My device has the latest OTA update 2.32.651.2
I went ahead and tried z4root which has 2 options, temporary and permanent. Went ahead and did temporary and it stated that it was rooted. Superuser shows up in my apps, so I went ahead and installed ROM manager as a youtube video said (gave a full successful walkthrough)…I open ROM Manager up and it says – You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at “/system/bin/su” or “/system/xbin/su”.
Now using Astro File Manager, I checked those directories and it wasn’t there as ROM Manager stated, but in my SD Card, I see su-2.3.1-bin-signed…
Now my question is, should I try it with permenant root?
If not, what is the recommended next step?
Should I delete/uninstall everything I have that’s related to my previous root attempt and do the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
I’m an Accounting major and a noob at this stuff…and I see people helping each other out here which is awesome, but I get confused trying to keep up with some posts where people are sent to other posts and so forth :/
Thank u in advance! Happy Holidays!
-------------------------------------------
Below is the process on a step by step basis from which i was able to complete it with the help of skndeep102. Thanks again buddy!
-Download z4root here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
-Install and run app, press on Permenant Root
-Let it run until it says it has completed
-Once it has completed you will see the Superuser app in your drawer
-Download Rom Manager from the Market
-Open Rom Manager and press on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery at the top (give it a bit as it has to download it and then install)
I had already downloaded the CM 6.1 rom and had it on the SD card
-So i went ahead and hit reboot to recovery in ROM Manager
-Once it is in recovery, go ahead and scroll down to Nandroid and do a backup
-once you do a back up press back and reboot
-Once it starts up again head over to ROM Manager and select Install ROM from SD Card
-Look for the Rom, select it, and it asks you to Wipe Device and Cache, select both
-It reboots to recovery, select the rom and install
I hope i didnt miss a step, but thats pretty much it if i remember it correctly (spent much more time reading than actually doing, lol) Also, if there is something that isnt touched upon here just go ahead and read through as several questions were asked and answered along the way.
Hope it helps!
* Process confirmed to still be working as of 1/5/2011

i am in the same position...the recommendation to me was to RUU to an older version and then root. I am not sure how to do that, so im hoping someone has another solution.
I personally dont trust those one click root options. Manual root requires a little more reading but I have never had an issue that way.
You can always try the permanent option. I dont see why you wouldnt want permanent anyway. If you use the temporary, its gonna unroot you when you reset your phone.

RUU back to an older version just requires that you have the htc drivers installed and the ruu exe. You just double click the ruu exe and follow the instructions.

I'm in the process of trying it...its been stuck at Rebooting for a couple mins now... :/
Wait and see at this point, i guess...
OK so I did the permenant root...and appearantly it worked since z4root is telling me it is and it now gives me the option to re-root and undo root...Also, when I open Rom Manager, it isn't telling me to root the phone...
However, I saw in another forum that a way to check if it is rooted is to download a terminal emulator and type in "su" after the $ ...When i do that it tells me permission denied....
What next?

It says that I must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed to flash and restore roms.
Where do I get this?
Just a heads up, it seems the root works, the su file is in bin and i tested out drocap2 screencapture app and gave it superuser permission. Worked perfectly...now if i could know where to get ClockworkMod Recovery as the Rom Manager I got from the market did not bring it :/
Use the "un-option" and try another method. I installed a stock ruu on my phone this morning to update my prl and tried the same app. It doesn't flash everything you need like the "flash_image" file. You need that to flash a recovery. I just re-rooted my phone the same way I did back in July. Take note that I am with cellular south and all I had to do is run a batch file and oila, there I am sitting in recovery. If you want to try another "root via app" method, you can try this-->View attachment UniversalAndroot.apk .
Instructions:
Open app and root
Download Rom Manager(which you have) and flash cm recovery.
I still think it probably won't work, but you can try anyway. I think these "rooting apps" only do enough so you can use apps like "AddFree"(or whatever it is) and others like it.
EDIT: In Rom Manager, the very first tab(up at the top) should say"Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". Press that one. It would ever flash for me until I went back to me nandroid.

quick question, performance difference between stock 2.1 and lets say most roms out there a huge difference?
anyone else care to throw some input into my situation?
Happy Holidays btw...
Just a heads up, what worked for me, once I was rooted and downloaded ROM Manager I had to install Superuser.apk, then when I tried to flash clockwork recovery I got the Superuser dialog box asking for permission, then select allow. another awesome program to help is Android Commander that you install on your PC and it provides a gui adb access but you have to have sdk and adb installed on your pc, but if you look around there is info about it available. hope this helps, wish i had more time but i was just home on my lunchbreak, good luck
I have a g1 that I rooted using universal androot, I decided to uninstall myfaves and was unaware that it somehow affected contacts. Afterward I performed a restore to my phone, thinking it was going to help but now I'm stuck in the google welcome screen and the welcome app crashes every time it gets to sync and I cannot get past the welcome screen. I know it was a stupid thing to do, if anyone can help me I would appreciate it.
Can you go into Recovery mode?
Yeah, I can get into recovery mode. I also used the hard reset (alt + w), the sign in still crashes once it starts synching.
Try to restore nandroid

lol if you have a custom rom in and you remove an important app, doing a hard reset wont restore a custom rom... you have to either restore a nandroid/BART backup file (which means you needed to make the backup before you messed up the custom rom) or you need to re-flash the rom completely... which there are many guides and methods here on xda you can follow to properly flash roms, basic method is boot recovery, wipe data, cache, sd ext, etc..... than repair sd ext!!! than flash new rom.
Be sure you have the proper requirements needed for Rom! ex:
Radio=1.2.xxxxxx/2.22.xxxxx (many different ones)
hboot=0.95.xxx/1.3.xxxx (many different ones)
sdext=2,3 or 4 (some require none)
I will try it out, thank you.

another method to try (not garenteed) would be to unzip the rom on your pc, go to system/app folder and copy the fav5.apk file to root of sd card on your device. than go to market and download 'oi file manager' (or any type of file manager app) than flash the fav5.apk file that way.... make sure unknown sources is checked in settings/applications on device
Awesome thanks
Got it working!
I got it working. Just wanted to post the update, thank you guys for the help!!!
New to the forums and the rooting scene. From me researching, it seems I can get rid of the ATT bloatware on my HTC One by rooting the phone. I've never rooted a phone in my life, and the vast majority of the tutorials on the site assume a working knowledge of what the heck they're talking about (which I don't...).
I was able to follow the tutorial in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2182792) to successfully unlock the bootloader.
(1) What does unlocking the bootloader mean?
(2) When I unlocked the bootloader, my phone completely reset. Is that normal?
(3) The tutorial continues as if your phone didn't reset. Should I reboot back into the fastboot mode and plug back in to the comp to continue the tutorial?
(4) By unlocking the bootloader, will I receive OTAs from ATT?
(5) If I root, will I receive OTAs from ATT?
(6) If I root, how can I still use the stock OS and just get rid of the ATT bloatware?
(7) I see things talk about "NAND backups" before one should root. What are those?
(8) What are RUUs?
(9) What does "Odexed" and "De-Odexed" mean...?
Thanks in advance for the help. I want to learn this stuff and can't find any explicit answers in these forums. I don't want to damage this brand new awesome phone.

As far as the AT&T bloatware is concerned, It was very easy to remove once i was rooted and had flashed a new ROM. Ive used both Titanium Backup, and Rom Toolkit Pro to remove the junk.
Best of luck with your devices, Ive had a great time learning with mine so far.

1. Unlocking the bootloader allows you to flash a custom recovery onto your device. It's a necessary step in the rooting process until s-off is obtained
2. This is 100% normal. It is strongly advised you backup everything before unlocking due to this.
3. The link in your post to that tutorial is broken so there is no way to see what you mean. Sorry.
4. You cannot receive OTA while the bootloader is unlocked. You would need to relock your bootloader to continue with an OTA update.
5. As of now, no due to having to unlock your bootloader. Please see answer 4.
6. You would need to flash a zip file in a custom recovery to debloat your phone. There are other ways but this is the best way for a very new user. Link to debloat zip: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250403
7. Nandbackup or Nandroid are complete backups of your phone's firmware. It's recommended to have one good up to date backup so if something goes wrong on a new ROM you flashed, you can easily revert. Nandroids are created in custom recoveries like TWRP.
8. An RUU is a package for your phone that contains a set of stock images used to unroot your phone and return it to complete stock. It stands for ROM Update Utility.
9. Odexed is the default state of the stock ROM. What it means is that a separate .odex cache file is stored away from a system app. It allows the app to load faster as upon boot your phone loads these cache files into the Dalvik VM. When a developer De-Odexes a ROM it means they have taken away those cache files and instead compiled them within the system app. This, in theory is a bit slower, but only when you clear your Dalvik and cache from recovery, otherwise you will notice no difference. The reason a developer does this is it makes the system app easily modifiable and themable. In summary, Deodex equals easily modifiable, whereas odex means the app is more locked down.

Thanks RPelham,
I hate to piggyback on someone else's thread, but they may want the answer to my question as well.
Is it a good idea to clear system and Dalvik cache from within recovery every now and then? Im used to the PC world, where clearing cache from time to time helps keep things in order.

No. You only need to clear Dalvik and Cache when flashing a new ROM, Kernel or basically any ZIP package. It won't serve any good purpose to randomly clear it. =)
Android has a great built in way of keeping your phone running great and killing any app that has not been recently used to keep everything running smooth.

Yes, you absolutely can. The only thing Root is giving you is administration level access to your phone. Obtaining root gives you the ability to modify, remove or add core system files and gives apps a lot more functionality as they can integrate themselves into the system.
And to answer question 3:
Yes the phone resets after you unlock your bootloader and it boots back into your phone. Simply reboot back to your bootloader and enter fastboot mode to continue flashing your recovery.
After you flash the recovery, it will boot back into your phone again (once you select recovery from the bootloader menu for the first time after the flash). Don't be alarmed by this, just reboot once more, select your recovery option again and this time it will truely take you to recovery.

No. Once you unlocked your bootloader your phone will not reset unless you flash a custom ROM or specifically wipe your device. Rooting will retain all settings and apps.
P.s. I'm heading off for the night. I hope I answered everything for you and helped you obtain a better understanding over this whole process. Ill follow up tomorrow to see if everything worked out for you and answer any additional questions. =)

Excellent! Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it! I'll edit this post if I have any more questions.
More questions:
(1) All the files on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2207874
What is the purpose of all these different files? Should I be familiar with them and will I ever need to use them?
(2) This package: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250403
I'm not exactly sure how to install it. Any advice or tips?
(3) The instructions for this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192324
-Download ROM
-Copy ROM to your sdcard
-Fullwipe in AROMA if you come from another ROM or base
-Flash the ROM
-Let the ROM boot (After a Fullwipe this takes some time)
-Enjoy TrickDroid
I understand the first 2 steps, but what does "Fullwipe in AROMA" mean?
(4) Difference between a ROM and a KERNEL?
(5) Are you familiar with Titanium Backup? I've tried reading their wiki, but I'm still not 100% sure what exactly it backs up and how that is different than the TWRP back up.

Hi.
1) they are just ruu for many different carriers, countries, etc. There is a specific ruu for your device. That's why so many ruu there
2) no need for that. Just install titanium backup pro from play store after rooting and you can delete all bloatwares or freeze them. Which will also get rid of those unwanted apps from your phone.

1. Unlocking the bootloader allows you to flash a custom recovery onto your device. It's a necessary step in the rooting process until s-off is obtained

Hello mate
I have 2 questions.
Number 7, how do I make backup of your rom if you still haven't installed custom recovery?
Number 8 to unroot my phone I can also use the nandroid backup instead of ruu right?
Edit: 1 more Lol. Sorry.
I asked many places but didn't get an answer for it.
Let's say I have custom ROM, and I need to relock boot loader and flash stock ruu to go back to stock in order to receive ota update. Does the ruu contains the stock recovery? Cuz I read somewhere that in order to get ota update I also needed to flash stock recovery?
Thanks a lot! I think I'm all set after this kkk
If anyone has an answer to this question I'd appreciate it very much. I've rooted many phones but all of them have had SD cards. The HTC One is lacking an SD Card so when I back up data/apks etc is there a spot on the phone's storage that doesn't get wiped when wiping from recovery to install new roms?

Nope. All gets wiped. Backup on ur PC.
Uh oh. I just told him the opposite in another thread. I could swear I read that selecting a "wipe userdata" option in recovery would erase everything in the /data partition *except* whatever is below /data/media?
Did I get this wrong?

Ive flashed a couple of different ROMs, and my media has not been erased when selecting "wipe user data". Im using CWM, if that's of any consequence.

Im not 100% sure as I do not use Titanium, if someone could check that would be great, but I don't think titanium can permanently remove bloat yet. Freeze, yes, remove I'm unsure.
Our device has not achieved s-off which means that the partition the system apps sit on is not accessible to be altered from within the ROM, only by recovery / adb.
7. To my knowledge you must have a custom recovery to make a nandroid. You can't make a complete one without it. And once you nandroid, that backup is specifically for that recovery. I.e. you fly use a cwm nandroid in twrp
8. As long as your nandroid was created before installing the root package, yes.
RUUs will reflash stock recovery.

1 and 2 were answered above. I also elaborated on 2 above.
3. Aroma is an installation software made for recovery. It's a wizard that walks you through the ROM setup. You'll see an option for it while setting up the ROM
4. Kernel is the software that allows your hardware to communicate with your ROM as well as control boot screens, splash screens and overclocking and undervolting.
ROM is the phones operating system.
5. TWRP is a FULL backup, titanium is just an app, it can't backup 100% of everything like a recovery can. Titanium backs up your app and user data. Basically your settings and apps.

So I just successfully rooted my lovely HTC One from Sprint. I've got TWRP 2.6.0.1 on it and all.
I'd REALLY like to get rid of all this garbage on my phone that I'm never going to use, however I also would like to keep it as close to stock as possible. I really enjoy Sense for the most part (minus quirks that I'm willing to live with, and BlinkFeed). I know how/can find out how to load a custom rom - I had CM7 on my HTC EVO 4G (1st Gen) and loved it. But I really don't want to be without Sense.
Can anyone make any suggestions as to what I should do/which rom I should use?

Sorry, I'm overwhelmed at the wealth of knowledge here. Is there a link to the specific one you're talking about? Search didn't do me a ton of good. Though I suppose I could send the guy a message and inquire about his ROM.
Thank you for all your help guys!
Okay so I've decided that I want to try the OMJ ROM. Now here's where I am unsure of exactly how to do it. I see that certain ROMs require different methods. I can't just copy the ZIP to my internal storage and use TWRP to flash it, right? It has to be more complicated than that...
Also, I just went past the return window for the phone so I really cannot afford to brick it. I assume that there's next to no chance of the aforementioned tragedy befalling me providing I stick with the mainstream ROMs?
Most roms are in a flashable format i use the CM 10.2 nightly myself. from what i can tell as long as you can get into the bootloader your safe. I wiped my whole phone SD card and everything accidentally with TWRP one time. Ended up having to use sideload to get a CM rom installed again but i was never in danger of bricking. When flashing roms always remember to do a factory reset to wipe the cache and do an advanced wipe of the data and system. after the rom is installed it will ask you to wipe the cache again which is always nice to do.

No worries, I am new to the unlocking scene too with this device . Those flashable zips will normally have the boot.img files included and when installing twrp will take care of it via the script inside the zip. if you open the zip file with winzip or something you should see that file on the root. TWRP or ClockworkMod recoveries make it really easy to install and backup roms.
flashing the boot.img i guess is for recovery purposes say if the system is in a boot loop. Or maybe if you upgrade the system only and didnt change boot img between two different roms. I personally never had to do this. After unlocking the device i used fastboot to replace the recovery and just do everything else inside the recovery.

Alright, so I've got OMJ's rom running no problem. Love the new feel but what I'm wondering is...is there still a way to delete apps like Stocks and other crap I won't use? I can disable some but not all, and none am I able to uninstall completely.
Would it be something as simple as going into the OMJ ZIP file and removing the unwanted apk files and then re-flashing to that version?

I suppose that could be one way of doing it, but i dont think its necessary. if you are already rooted or can install root easy i would just install a Root file explorer. Browse to the /system/app folder i think it is and delete the APKs from there.

Yeah I tried that with ES explorer AND Root File Manager. ES would have an error, and Root File Manager would simply say it was deleted but it was never actually deleted. I think it has something to do with the security. I'm not really sure, haha! I'm used to being able to just openly delete apps from within Settings>Apps like the old days of my EVO 1st gen.
hmm interesting as long as the /system is mounted as r/w permissions you should be able to delete. well if you are planning on reflashing using the modify zip method im curious to know if that works.

use Root explorer, and set it at r/w
also Titanium Backup will delete it for you too.
If I remember correctly there are a few apps in the play store that are specifically for getting rid of "bloatware".....maybe search bloatware removal, our uninstall bloatware something like that. Hopefully this helps!

The second thread you followed that gave you instructions to use the am start command is for the m7. It didn't work because the command isn't leading anywhere on the m8. Hey man, it's pretty easy. Download this file http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=9599 it is important that you use this specific file. Don't trip cause it says harman, it's safe to flash on your device.
After you downloaded follow this instructions.
1. Install WinRar, or 7zip.
2. Open the ROM in either of those programs (don't extract, just open it)
3. Navigate to system, then app, and there you will have to drag and drop the 2 files I have attached.
4. Let WinRar or 7zip save the file (It may take a while 7 - 10 minutes) BE PATIENT.
5. Transfer the modded ROM to your phone
6. Flash in TWRP (Make sure you wipe system partition)
7. Reboot to the system, complete the config wizar
8. Follow the steps to unlock (am.start....... etc.)
9. Enjoy
****** I WANT TO POINT OUT THAT S-OFF IS NOT REQUIRED TO SIM UNLOCK YOUR DEVICE ******
I have made a ton of these and NEVER had to S-Off
If you encounter any issues let me know.

Hey my friend. The thing is that the stock rom doesn't bring the 2 apks required to unlock. So you actually have to push them to your phone. The easiest way is to add them to a custom rom to set the permissions automatically. The other way around is to root the phone, put the two files into the system/app folder and then manually set permissions. If you prefer just follow the instructions I sent on my earlier reply.
Cheers!
android is back to life!

I have made a ton of these and NEVER had to S-Off
If you encounter any issues let me know.

thank you for your directions. good news Android is back to life again, bad news is that sim is still locked, I tried again from terminal emulator the (am.start....... etc.) but I got an error (please see the attached image). I follow all your steps very carefully, the only thing I had to do differently was that I put your attached files in the zip file using windows zip program and it did take a long time to finish (like 30min) I did try with winrar but it keep creating a new small file with just those 2 files. Is it possible that the 2 files were not added correctly?
Thank you for any advice on how to unlock it
going crazy
update: last night I tried the unlocksim.zip file and installed it on my device with TWRP, and then used the method with the the terminal emulator (am ...) and with the sim unlock helper too, but both send me the vDM client has stopped. I read it could be solved with insert coin system, so I go ahead and installed it, but still get the same message. Any ideas?

Hey man, I fotgot to tell ya, you have to be on JellyBean or KitKat for the sim unlock command works. I have tried pushing the files on Lollipop but it always got me force close, so it's better to flash a KitKat rom....
This is what I can do man, I will upload my modded ROM and send you link. Don't give up man.
EDIT: I forgot to ask, did you get the hidden menu where you tap API then SIM LOCK? Or couldn't you get there?
I was thinking about the same thing

Alright don't worry man, after you successfully sim unlock you will be able to flash any ROM you like, I am using InsertCoin, but again I installed it after sim unlocking
EDIT: For the sake of time and my bandwidth. Can you try the steps I sent you yesterday but using 7zip instead? Please try, right now I have uploaded 100MB/1.5GB so imagine...
I will give it a try

Its ready to go. No need to do anything else other than execute the am... command
Need backup, pinned down by failure!
Hey guys, I am having the same problem. Unlocked, rooted, s-on. I tried installing the bad boys 2.1 mod you recommended on the first page, after swapping in the new files, and it still freezes at the HTC one screen. I did a factory wipe before the install as well. I am using a NON HK M8, however I thought that bad boys worked on either. Please let me know if I am incorrect in that aspect.
I am in a similar situation as I purchased this phone and now live in the Caribbean, sprint is blocking my new gsm carrier. What a headache sprint is.
Thanks in advance
bad news, it freezes at the htc one screen

Ok, I downloaded the file and installed it, but it freezes at the htc one screen. Is it possible that the firmaware version needs to be updated? other idea: On your #19 you say it is possible to push the 2 files directly once the system is running, is there a way we can try that?
Have you tried wiping system partition before flashing? What version of TWRP are you using?

Alright my friend. Try the same, wipe system partition before flashing. And what version of TWRP are you using?
I manage to do it
jacnsa said:
ok, finally did it! wipping the partition did the trick and it finally worked ! Well its not a good news at all. Bad news is that even after entering :am start com.redbend... which this time worked and bring me the API menu and then after selecting Sim unlock (and nothing happened). reboot the phone and then entering the *#*#4636#*#* menu and seleccion wcdma prefered still nothing happened. I reboot and again entering the *#*#4636#*#* menu it appears to be again selected the CDM/EvDO.... option, once again selecting WCCDMA preferred and again nothing. I think it is strangethat after rebooting the system the original band appears again to be selected. I am attaching some images which I think can be some kind of help.
Any clue on how to achieve the unlocking will be much appreciated...
