So I am on a custom ROM (FireNote) and it changed my home button longpress to open up "Device options". I want to change it back to open my task manager/recent apps, just like it does on stock. I have installed several apps and I still cant get it to go back :/ I guess another thing to mention is that I am running NOVA launcher.
FIXED! In Wanam exposed under system you change long press home behavior to something else and then change it back to recent apps or whatever you want and reboot.

If you want to change/add more button functionality, you could try gravity box.
It has a navigation button section where you can change all the buttons.
I for example made the display turn off when long pressing menu button, which is pretty handy on a large device like the note 3

All of a sudden, (perhaps due to an update of softkeys?), when I reboot, I get the swipe screen OK, then swipe in and am sitting at a black screen with SoftKeys running, and the words "Recent Tasks" on the screen - with nothing actually showing. The only way around this is to go into the Nook "Extras" apps drawer and select Zeam, my launcher of choice. Up until yesterday, I would have to just hit the Nook hard button after a reboot/swipe to get into Zeam.
How can I tell the Nook to go straight into Zeam on a reboot, and not SoftKeys? I have a single press of the Nook hard key set to go to SoftKeys, so I can get to a Back button when I need it, or use it as a Task Switcher.
Thanks for any help!! I think I've tried every setting here.
It was a bug in version 3. Get the latest from the market.

I have the latest: 3.06. We're talking about SoftKeys, right?
Thats strange, I was talking about SoftKeys. The developer mention that it was a bug in a previous version but 3.06 should work just fine for you. Try uninstalling it and putting it back on. Make sure to set your default lancher in the SoftKeys settings, it is under virtual home button, normal press.

No good. I uninstalled and reinstalled. Same issue. Im giving this to my 75 yr old Mom, so i really hope to fix this before i do. Thanks
I assume you don't have Softkeys calling itself as the launcher in its prefs, right?
I haven't noticed this myself, but then again, mine hasn't rebooted in 4 days.

Not sure what you mean here. In SoftKeys prefs... I see a Tools menu which pops up Settings... is that what you mean? There's nowhere in there to specify SoftKeys as the default Launcher. I do, however, have SoftKeys as the Default Launcher in NookColor Tools... When I change it to Zeam or Home, then SoftKeys doesn't work at all, like when I press the Nook button.

OK, I fixed it, sort of. Got it back to what it was doing before - which is still a bug, but when you hit the Recent Activity on a black screen thing, you just hit the Nook Home button and it will get you into Zeam. Still a bug, but the workaround is less painful for Mom.
Alright, I did some searching, but like any forum, it's generally messy.
I was interested updating my Nook, to either Froyo, or Gingerbread(?), or the latest firmware from B&N...
Rooting it, and retaining root.
Perhaps getting GApps
Definitely getting Market access.
If anyone could point me to the best links in an orderly fashion, I would appreciate that many folds.

good luck
you don't even need to search. all of the threads are on the first page of the dev forum.
That may be but I wasn't aware that development was for the general user. I'm new here using my husband's account.
Thanks for the help guys.
Sorry for being really retarded, but how to add widgets to home screen? Namely the facebook one.
Also how come downloaded apps don't appear in extra till i reboot the book? I can search and access them but not from the extras menu till reboot.

What launcher are you using, stock?
Yes... is there a method to do it with stock via ADB or a launcher you recommend?
Try LauncherPro or ADW, or just search the market for "Launcher". After you install a new launcher, the next time that you press your home button, you'll see a dialog with the list of installed launcher apps with a checkbox at the bottom.
If you have SoftKeys installed, I'd set that as the default (ticking the checkbox), and then configure SoftKeys to passthru a single press of the home button to LauncherPro, ADW, or whatever you want for a home screen manager/launcher.
Once you replace the stock launcher, to add a widget, perform a "long press" on the home screen. This is simply pressing on an available (no icon) area of the home screen for ~2 seconds. You should now see the "Add to home screen" dialog where you can select from several actions. Select "Widgets" and a list of available widgets will be displayed.
HTH
Ok set soft keys as home now how doi configure it to passthrough?
Go to the app drawer and launch SoftKeys. Click the screwdriver icon on the toolbar that appears at the bottom of the screen. This will bring you to the SoftKeys configuration screen.
Select "Virtual Home Button"
Select "Normal Press"
A list of all installed launchers will appear.
Select the one that you want the SoftKeys virtual home button to launch when it's pressed.
Press the back button
Select "Physical Home Button"
Select "Button"
Select the option "Single Tap Launcher, Double Tap SoftKeys"
Now, when you press the home button, you'll go straight to your default launcher. A quick double-press will take you to the SoftKeys app, which acts as a task switcher, among many other things.
Thanks that was a big help guys.
Hi I was just wondering if it were possible to disable the physical home button. Any toddler apps my niece plays with are short played because she just clicks home all the time. I know there are kids apps that act as a home replacement button I was looking for something more elegant, namely pie mode or expanded desktop.
I did try editing the kl files in system/usr/keylayout
I changed HOME to BACK just to test but it didn't work.
I'm using the latest schizoid rom 4.2.2
Expanded desktop is pie in that ROM not sure if it disables the physical home button though

Pie doesn't disable physical home button. Pie is far less distracting for her, without the soft keys though.
Solution
I found the solution. Ill just keep this here if someone else in Googleland needs to disable the home button.
Download Jota+ and Root Explorer (maybe there is a free alternative?) from Google Play.
Open Root Explorer, navigate to /system/user/keylayout, then hold down gpio-keys.kl and select copy. Navigate to the sdcard and paste the file (use the "copy here" button on the top). Make another copy for backup if you don't like livin' on the edge. Now hold down gpio-keys.kl, select open with, General tab, Open as Text. Select Jota+. Find the line that says key 232 HOME WAKE. Remove the word HOME or replace it with another key if you really want to. Hit Save, the back button, copy gpio-key.kl. If it gives an error, try again because it's requesting root privileges. Reboot.
Use pie to hide the soft keys. In the pie settings there is a option to disable pie from appearing. I can't figure out how to enable "Expanded Desktop" in this build.

Some of the launchers you can set the Home button to do nothing, like Nova. Not sure if that would give you the desired result your looking for.
Today I bought the HTC One with the surprise that it doesn't have a dedicated menu button. I am guessing that sometime in the future this will get remedied somehow, but in the meantime is there a workaround for this?
For example, on my previous HTC Desire phone, I was using Launcher8 as my main launcher however to edit its settings I'd need to press the menu button and then press settings.
Without a dedicated menu button, I can't find anyway to change its settings. So is there any way to get around this? or will I need to root my phone and install a new ROM for this? (which I don't want to do at the moment in case I void my warranty).
look for three dots in a line going downward on the screen, press that for the menu, there is no dedicated hard menu button
John.

Yeah I saw the menu icon in some apps, but I tried it on Launcher8 and the only way to access the settings was from the homescreen itself. There are no menu icons to press to get the settings as far as I am seeing.
EDIT: Actually, nevermind. I found that I can make an icon for it.
This will be fixed when HTC finally delivers 4.2.2. The leaked versions let you assign holding down the home button for settings. They should have done it like this in the first place. The 3 dots thing looks hideous.
Hi guys,
I have a faulty home button that randomly triggers recent apps dialog (by long pressing of home button) even if iam not pressing the home button. Its not rom related i tried it. So I want to change the behaviour of phone when long pressing of home button to do nothing on this long press. This feature was possible in CM 10, where you can change the behaviour of hardware buttons. So i want to change the behavior of long press home button to do nothing. I have a rooted pnone of course and 2.3.6. Based rom by nkvi71 (see signature). Is it possible somehow? Thanks for your tips.
Btw i cant change it thru any launcher. For example if I change this in Holo launcher to do nothing on long press of home button, the Rom ignores this settings. And i cant use nova launcher because i have a gingerbread rom. Is there a fix for it?
Use cm7.
It gives you the feature to change it

Thanks for your tip i tried this rom based on CM7.2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2234221 but no luck. In CyanogenMod settings i click on input - 3rd choice) and then I click on 'long press of home button' and then I untick 'Show recent apps' but no luck they still appear on long press of home button even if it is disabled also on holo launcher. Do you know any specifuc cm7 rom that offers explicitly to do nothing on long press of home button? Or am I doing something wrong??
