The note 3 does not have the capability sadly to interface through USB for anything but file transfer. It will not play music through USB nor can you control it from your head unit. Some have had luck using Bluetooth, but USB is a no go on this phone.

I have similar problem but mine doesn't connect thru auxiliary cable in the car. My note 8 does without problem but not the N3.

[Q] HDMI adapter issue (MHL)

Hi,
I just received an OEM Micro USB to HDMI adapter today.
I connected my Note to the adapter and then to the HDMI cable of my TV.
Unfortunately there is no HDMI signal on the TV side.
Now, I don't know howto activate TV output on the Note. I don't even know if that's possible.
Can anyone guide me on how to activate HDMI output on the Galaxy Note ?
Should I make any settings ?
Should I play a video ? (or would it give out video from HDMI even at home screen ?)
Should I power the phone and/or the HDMI adapter through USB ?
Thanks.

Connect HDMI cable to MHL adapter, and other end into TV. (duh...)
Plug your charger cable into the MHL adapter. (output won't work without this)
Plug your MHL adapter into Note. (no configuring required!)
Everything you do on your Note will be mirrored on your TV/Screen, at the Note's native 1280x800 resolution. Plain and simple!
Video's that are played via the MHL adapter will be played at their own native resolution, up to and including 1080p.
Enjoy!
thank you.
it doesn't work unfortunately.
maybe my adapter is not working but it passes power through USB.
how can I understand if it really doesn't pass HDMI ?

It's possible that you have a faulty adapter. It should just be plug and play, but you have to make sure that the adapter is receiving external USB power in order for it to work.
ok; it works now.
the micro USB connector was not fully connected...
thanks.

Hi, me to facing similar issue. The MHL adapter when connected does not show any notification on the screen. The only thing it does is charging the phone. Does it mean its a faulty adapter?

and what rom and kernel are you on ?
I'm on stock running ICS and I get funky results, sometimes it works for a minute or two sometimes just a few seconds. The problem seems to be on the TV, a Sony Bravia, the HDMI setting has to be Wide for picture quality (it has zoom, smart zoom, wide, 16:9 and 4:3) but as soon as there is some glitch in receiving data from the phone the TV begins to scroll through those settings to regain a signal and I can't force a setting on wide for the HDMI connector, only for one of the SCART connectors.
The frustrating part is that it works flawlessly when I connect an Asus Transformer. Could it be the MHL's USB connector? If that is the case how can I check it?

Just in case anyone relooks this up.
Connect everything. Then REBOOT PHONE/NOTE. The TV will then detect it auto.
Hope this helps someone !!
It didnt help me... my sony bravia 32" tv just wont show the gnote's video. the same adapter works fine on my samsung 32" tv but not on the sony. I have even upgarded the sony tv's firmware too. tried changing to "Wide Zoom" settings and other things but still no video showing, although the tv does know there is something plugged in to HDMI port 1.

lol, just don't try that any sony device to work together with another samsung device, this is a general rule for electronic trademarks.
*Frankly my friend, I lost a complete day trying my sony ericcson bt handset to work with my note, no success at all, so, I just bought a samsung one and everything gone well.
that sux, bluetooth is a standard and im sure there are no variants... they are cheap, so i will buy another one from ebay and see if it is bcos of the adpater and not the TV.

Samsung Smart Dock HDMI not working. ARGH!

Hi all,
I know there have been other postings regarding this, but none have helped me solve my situation:
I have a "stock ROM" AT&T Note 2, and have tried two different Smart Dock units from Fry's. I get NO usable HDMI signal from either when connecting to my ASUS V228H monitor; the HDMI cable/monitor have been checked as working by connecting my DVD recorder up and successfully playing video content. USB connections to a wired keyboard and mouse worked well on unit #1, for some reason not on unit #2. There was no improvement when I rebooted the phone into safe mode. Lastly, the phone is correctly recognized by a PC when connecting via USB (MTP mode).
I'm ready to scrap the whole Smart Dock idea and instead buy an MHL-to-HDMI adapter and bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo, which I think can be found with total price just around that of the Smart Dock... unfortunately, I guess there's no "splitter" that could let me hook a hard drive up as well, like I could with the Smart Dock.
Does anyone have any ideas? I of course would hate to have to hard reset the phone, but might do it if there's really a good chance of it helping.
Final question: is it possible that the microUSB connector at the base of the phone could get damaged in such a way that USB to PC connections work, but MHL video does not?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
did you plug the dock into an original Samsung charger?
did you reboot?
mhl takes a lot of power, so you need to have the charger plugged in to make it work.
and the usb port can get stuck in a certain mode if you've used it too much without rebooting, a simple reboot will reset it.
I am using the new micro-USB to USB cord connected to the wall charger (FYI, plugged into a power-strip, not directly into a wall outlet, would that actually lead to MHL getting too litle power?). The phone was recently rebooted. I have typed this response using a USB-connected mouse, so at least that's working. HDMI is STILL not working.

I'm guessing that unless it's specifically stated for the gn2, like the samsung dock, the microusb connector is using 5 pins instead of 11. That's the issue you'll have with mhl adapters, too: find an 11 pin, or buy the 5-> 11 adapter.
If it says compatible with the note (not note2) or evo, that's a pretty solid guarantee it's using 5 pins.
-----
I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
in this case the amount of pins is irrelevant. (edit: unless you didn't get a note 2 smart dock)
have you tried a different screen/TV and cable?
there are multiple versions of HDMI, and your cable or screen may be sufficient for an old DVD player but not a newer device.
Interesting that nowhere on the Smart Dock's box does it say "compatible with Note 2". But looking up the part # on the Samsung.com accessories site yields the following description:
Smart Dock Multimedia Hub
EDD-S20JWE
Compatibility: Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S4
As for HDMI protocols changing over time leading to incompatibilities... WTF? They don't need to create specification version numbers like USB to clue the user in? I will test your theory with an MHL to HDMI dedicated connector purchased today. If you're right, even this device won't work with my monitor...
This is going to sound like the annoying tech support people on the phone but... are you sure everything is plugged in tight?
I only ask because when I first got my smart dock I was getting picture but no sound with my hdmi cable and I was about to try a different cable but decided to try replugging everything first and voila...it started working!
It didn't make sense to me because it must be plugged in if it's working even a little but apparently either the phone wasn't docked all the way or more likely I hadn't pressed the hdmi cable in enough.
Would be nice if it's that simple in your case. Good luck!
Sent From My Ginormous Note 2
Thank you for the suggestion. Yes, I had tested the Smart Dock's connections to make sure all were tight. No improvement.
I have given up on the Samsung Smart Dock for now. A "rig" that appears to be working is as follows:
1) Cirago MHL1000 MHL-to-HDMI adapter.
2) Mobile Phone->Voyage adapter (Micro 5 pin to 11 pin)
3) Comkia 3 foot HDMI cable.
4) ASUS VE228H monitor
5) HYPE Bluetooth Curve optical mouse
6) SMK-LINK Versapoint Bluetooth Slim Keyboard
You are definitely right about needing to check on the connection status of the various connectors. I periodically lose the HDMI video signal, which requires that I press the MHL adapter's plug tighter into the 5-to-11 pin connector. Yes, I also have the case off the Note II when attaching everything.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app (using the rig above).
Okay, I'm noticing that the HDMI signal gets lost every 5-10 minutes and blacks out the monitor for 5-10 secs. I also have been having the issue of definitely less than 1080p output (not sure if even 720p) except for video player and Angry Birds Star Wars which do look good.
Is this a problem of the Cirago MHL1000 plus 5-> 11 pin converter, which would be solved if I just spent some more bucks on a Samsung HDTV cable with 11 pins? Will the Samsung MHL 2.0 cable for the S4 provide better output for a Note 2 than the Samsung S3/Note 2 cable?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
Okay, I sucked it up and bought the Samsung MHL 2.0 HDTV cable for the S4 and backward compatible with the Note 2. I think I've gotten things as good as it's going to get. Video out is stable and actually at higher resolution than using a Cirago cable and a 11 to 5-pin converter.
I unfortunately have no USB input capability for hard drive access. Is there any adapter to insert in the "circuit" to let me attach a HD to the Note 2 if its MicroUSB is already occupied by the MHL to HDMI cable?

hi
Hello, I have a problem when connecting a peripheral (mouse, keyboard, etc) the screen automatically flips and turns black, saying, which it is connected by hdmi too. that's not right.
otherwise it has explain, does not leave me connect the mouse and keyboard, because the s4 assumed that this also connected the hdmi.

Anyway to play music thru usb port on car radio?

I'm wondering if it's possible to play music on a car radio (or any usb input) thru the usb port on the note 4?
Any app, mod, hack, tweak to mount a certain folder (music) as a thumb drive?
I have several usb input audio devices, but I can't access anything when I attach the note.
I feel you, I tried to do the same with no success ended up buying a 3.5mm headphone jack to rca for my car stereo ?
Yeah that sucks

So you're trying to MOUNT a USB DRIVE filled with music and play it to your car stereo? You using a 3.5mm cable or Bluetooth here?
I have some USB OTG cables (really cheap, ebay) and play the music from my SD card using PowerAmp (FLAC Playback, also allows folder choosing; your USB drive?) through the OTG cable, to my Fiio E07k, then to my headphones/speakers. Works FLAWLESSLY, and if I plug anything to the headphone jack simultaneously, it will re-route the audio.
Hope this helps.
I want to use a usb cable from my phone into my car radio usb port and play the music that is in my phone thru the car radio using the usb cable and not the 3.5mm head phone jack.
i believe this is a feature in lollipop to enable audio through usb. gonna have to wait

OK, with that being said, what stereo you using? Display style or single din?
Is it linix based or android?
Brand and model number?
I've got a pioneer single din in the wife's car (can't remember the #) and I've got a Kenwood dnx5120 double din, which has a usb port that will read a usb thumb drive or a hdd (or iPod / iPhone) but will not "see" my phone when connected usb.
I figure if it can read a usb thumb drive or even a hdd, why can't the note 4 mount itself as a thumb drive (external sd card) and allow my radio to read it's content and play it's mp3's?
Ever found a way?
Im in the same situation.
Ive tried the apps that enable usb mass storage mode on my sgh-1337m galaxy s4 and while it works and my computer recognizes my sd card as an usb drive, my car stereo still does not.
Any other way or USM enabler that works?

I just bought a Kenwood KDC x701 and I had a very unusual set of circumstances. When I plug in my HTC 10 to either USB cable one or two nothing happens other than charging the phone. The Kenwood radio does not recognize the HTC 10 at all. I thought this was completely normal as I was not trying to mount the HTC 10 internal storage to play music files as I have no music files on my phone except audio recordings I make myself a phone calls and such. I am able to stream music via Bluetooth from the phone to the radio just fine and that's what I've been doing this entire time. The only thing I listen to is tidal music streaming service. So the other day I went to plug in my lgv10 to charge while I was driving and a funny thing happened. The radio display indicated it was reading and then went into a hand mode, it is literally called hand mode LOL. The next thing that happened was a message popped up on my phone asking me if I wanted to download a Kenwood app from the Play Store I hit cancel. Then all of the sudden it started playing music from the Tidal music streaming app. Although no information was displayed on the radio I was able to use the buttons to skip forward and Skip ahead of the different tracks but I am not sure I am able to pause or play music on the radio controls. I am not sure how it is possible to stream digital audio through the USB cable directly into the radio. I have no audio files stored on my phone on either phone and I'm not even sure how to mount internal or external storage on the phone if I wanted to use the head unit to access any audio files. So I called Kenwood and they said what I described is not possible with any of their head units. They did say that I should be able to mount my internal or external storage on my phone and use the Kenwood app two act as a music player and play the files on the phone and have them information sent to the radio. What it sounds to me like is I have a USB OTG situation with the LG V10 and no one knows why. Also of note I am unable to stream music from the lgv10 to the Kenwood stereo and no one knows why Kenwood does not know why. All of the track information is displayed on the radio I can control the songs going backwards and forwards the timer countdown xcetera but there's just no music. I will say streaming music from Tidal music service streaming app sounds much much better through the USB cable versus Bluetooth. I can't believe how much better it sounds over the USB cable it's like adding an amplifier to your system. I will try to make some videos and if this helps anyone that's going to be awesome. Also of note when I select source to USB when I have my lgv10 plugged in it calls the source Android1. This totally sounds to me like USB OTG. What do you all think and has anything like this happened to anyone else? And this does not work with my HTC 10.
I don't believe that this is possible any longer. It was possible under older versions of android (pre kit kat i believe) where the "internal sd" was seen as a physically separate storage device instead of being mounted under /data/media. Once they made this change, they had to swap from USB Mass Storage mode to the annoying Media Transfer Protocol. The reason Mass Storage had to be dropped is because of how it functioned. When you allowed access to your "internal sd" it would have to dismount it from the OS to give the host device plugged into the USB port exclusive access to the file system. Since they made the move to mounting it as /data/media there is no way to give that exclusive access any longer. Trying to dismount that /data/media to give that exclusive control would yank away all of the writable media away from the OS. Android would likely crash, or at least nothing would function any longer.

Audio out via the USB in car?

Hi
I've received my P20 Pro this week and am loving the phone so far. However, one big issue remains that i can't seem to get my head around - how to play audio from the phone through my non-Bluetooth car stereo?
I previously had an iPhone 6 where this was easy; plug the phone in to the stereo via USB and it would simultaneously charge and play music from the phone through the car stereo.
But when I plug in the P20 Pro via the same USB port, I can't seem to get audio coming out. I know it's possible - as obviously headphones plug in to the same USB-c port - so is there something I have to turn on or toggle to get it to send audio out?
Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks - I looked and it's not checked. In fact, the headphones work when you plug them in, so it is allowing audio out with certain connections.
It's just when I use the charging lead to connect the phone to the car stereo (USB) - nothing happens. It doesn't even charge, and says "check USB" on the front of the stereo. if I play music when it's connected, it just comes out the phone - which obviously it wouldn't do if it was connected to the stereo.
Do I need a specific audio lead, rather than just the basic charging one that comes with it?
Coming from an iPhone background, it's just the same lead... so I'm struggling to see why this won't work either.
My case was huawei p20 pro generate so much noise and jitter during playing through USB audio connect to Helix dsp, it solved by changing USB speed mode from full speed mode to high speed mode on the Helix dsp USB setting. As my iPhone was working fine on both mode. In case if you can try to change setting on your car stereo system. Try to consult with your car stereo manufacturer.
Hi Slangking, did you already find a solution to use P20 (pro) audio over USB in your car? I'm having the same issue as you, went from the iPhone 6 to p20. Just a cheap USB stick works, and I could even remote spotify on my iPhone with my steer trough USB. Changing the USB output in the developer settings to audio source didn't work

I did some research and mounting your memory card as a USB Mass Storage will work like explained over here, but I still can't find out how this will work for the internal storage...
UPDATE
I found something called WIRELINQ: Smart Android USB Converter Cable for Car Stereo. Started as a kickstarter project, but are now able to buy. Will try that one out.
I got one of these and found I can't get anything to play through the stereo, the audio plays on the phone speakers but the track info displays on the stereo screen and the steering wheel controls also work, I can disable USB audio streaming via the dashlinq app which makes radio player within dashlinq work properly.. but nothing else works.. have you had any luck?
Thanks for your reply. You are a step ahead of me. I have the Wirelinq cable but couldn't get it to work, not even the track info on my cars stereo display. It recognise the Wirelinq cable, but not my phone. I am in contact with GROM and even tried to install a new firmware update (which I was able to install myself by connecting the cable to my computer), so there last message was:

Did you ever get anywhere with this? I'm a new P20 Pro owner (also having switched from iphone 6) and wanting to crack this issue. Thanks.
Not sure if there is a solution. iPhones behave differently when connected to stereos, just like an usb stick. Android devices don't, unfortunately. I am using an AUX cable with the usb-c adapter in my husbands car, or bluetooth streaming in my car.

No, it didn't work. Maybe it will if GROM will come out with an update. I've returned my cable and have bought a bluetooth to AUX receiver adapter on eBay for just a few dollar. This actually works very well, you plug the bluetooth adapter in your USB and the cable in your AUX and you can listening wireliss music on each app through bluetooth. The downside is that you won't be able to see your track details, no remote from your steer and the quality is different. But you can still charge you phone with a normal USB cable while listening. It's not a solution, but I got used to it now.
Not a bad idea with the bluetooth to aux!

iphones actually don't behave like a usb stick when connected to a stereo. the music is still played on the iphone, but the sound is streamed to the stereo. controls on the stereo actually control the playback on the iphone itself.
with android, to play audio over usb, you need to use mass storage mode, which will behave just like a usb stick.
ios can output digital audio over it's usb cable, which the stereo can receive.
android can output audio through usb-c, but i don't think that it can be used to output audio over the usb cable like iphones can. it might be some protocol that iphones use and android phones don't, but technically it should be possible.
Just stumbled upon this thread as I am in the same situation. Basically, I have a P20 Pro and a Huawei Mediapad M5 Lite that are behaving exactly the same..i.e they cannot play audio from USB to car stereo's USB ports. The internal media can be browsed and played via car stereos interface but you cannot stream music via USB from phone (say Spotify) to car stereo.
USB audio streaming works if I enabled ANDROID AUTO at the car stereo and installed ANDROID AUTO in the phone/tablet. You might ask why not just settle for this setup?
I can, butI I hate so much the AA's "Swipe to Unlock" lock and the changes in the UI when AA is active.
What I want is the plain/original phone interface (without AA) and all audio routed via USB.
Bluetooth, I know is an option, but again, it would be nice if this (USB) can be solved. It seems possible, I think. If AA can switch USB audio streaming on, can other apps or workaround/reverse engineering not?
BTW, i tried playing with the Developer Options, USB Configuration as "MTP or Audio Source" --- no luck here
Just bought a Kenwood DDX6906S receiver for my 2013 GMC Sierra I cannot get anything to work via USB. USB debugging enabled. I feel like I've been going in circles. any help would be super appreciated, TIA

Razer phone 2 not detecting earphones nor Android auto

I recently got my USB-C port replaced by Razer because it was charging right and it out of nowhere stop syncing to Android auto. Now it charges fine but my car still won't recognize the phone, it will for a sec and then it disconnects. Also when I plug my earphones in, the audio still plays through the speakers, in option pops up to change the USB preference but it won't do it.

One thing is that some USB-C headphones don't have a AMP/DAC built-in. This is a common problem with Razer Phone 2 users, as it doesn't have one inside. So, if your headphone adapter or USB-C headphones don't have one built-in it won't work. 2, seems like Android Auto doesn't like some USB cables. Try some troubleshooting from at the "My Android Auto app isn't working" page on the Android Auto help page.
I was experiencing relatively the same thing. I tried cleaning and tightening the usb-c port on my phone. Didn't help. So I tried cleaning out the usb-c charging cable, the end that plugs into the phone. Problem solved. It works fine now, for the most part. Still will disconnect from Android Auto if I move the phone around to bunch. Or put the cable in a bind near the end that plugs into the phone.

Try some troubleshooting from at the "My Android Auto app isn't working" page on the Android Auto help page.

Android auto and the adapter for the earphones used to work fine, it just happened out of nowhere before way before I sent the phone to get fixed like 2 weeks ago, the problems started last year but i think there was an update of some sort. It still won't connect, even when using the original adapter and my pc doesn't even pick up that the phone is even connected, it will just charge. I've already check the device manager to see if it was a bad driver but nothing. no matter what device i connect, it will just say "Charging connected device via USB". ive Already tried USB debugging, disable USB audio routing, cleaning it, and apps to manually control it.
