Doesn't seem to be a way to turn LTE off to conserve battery. I mean, you can turn off Mobile Data all together but that seems to be the only option.
On previous phones I have always tried to go through the day with the slowest data possible to conserve battery, then when I am surfing on need the faster data, I just turn it on.
At least in the Canadian version we have the option to not pick LTE. In settings->Wireless & Networks -> mobile networks -> Network mode
These instructions for the Thunderbolt work. It's a bit much to go through every time you want to switch, though.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-htc-thunderbolt-forums/70282-how-turn-off-lte.html
*Edit*
Nevermind. It appears that you cannot change the default Preferred Network Type on this phone with that method.

Unfortunately the AT&T Phone does not have the Network Mode selection although I would guess once we get these phones rooted and what not we will probably see Rom's for AT&T That have that option included.
This would have been nice to do for those of us without LTE at the moment.
Also in the same boat wanting to turn off LTE and go to HSPA+ or even just Edge while I am in the office not using the device for anything other than text. Phone taken off charger at 8am and is now in the yellow range.
Can someone with a rogers version do the temp root, and then pull their settings apk for us? Would that do it if we install?

dial from phone dialer "*#*#4636#*#*"
hit "phone information">"Set prefferred network type:"

I'll play with it on the Vivid but on the Aria, if I changed it and either toggled airplane mode or rebooted it would usually switched to what I changed it too. It would not change immediately after changing it in diagnostic mode.

No 3g on vivid. Only LTE, HSPA+, and Edge.
I'm going to the try logging in as well and will try the switch when i get the phone. Post up if you've had luck with either of them and if you've seen an increase in battery life.

Changing the APN will drop you off LTE. yay finally found a way!You can even then use the *#*#4636#*#* phone pref method to turn it to WCDMA and have it still. I hjope that means it turns off the LTE radio entirely. Will see with battery life.
Thanks... hopefully this helps battery life a bit.
That is my ONLY complaint about this phone so far... well that and the locked bootloader.
I recently updated my Galaxy Note to the Samsung provided ICS update.
I am now running the following.
Android Version
4.0.3
Kernel version
3.0.15-N7000DDLP8-CL551076
[email protected] #3
Build number
IML74K.DDLP8
After the update my phone did have internet connection. But about 24 hours post running the update, I am now not able to get Internet connectivity, on roaming.
My Data roaming option is checked.
However, I am getting a notification in my bar
Data roaming
You have lost data connectivity because you left your home network

Kindly advise.
This thing i have experience some time ago.
I have set network operator selection - 'automatically' and issue was solved.
I have it set to Auto
have you tried contacting your provider if there are problems with your account?

Why don't you set it to manual instead of auto
After seeing it to manual select your operator
Done
This method had helped me once
Just give it a try
Alternatively you could again ask for internet settings from your operator

I have tried both automatic and manual. I have also tried GSM only/WCDMA only and WCDMA/GSM auto. Still no joy.
Ok I did a factory reset. Now not only is there no Internet but when I try and make a call it says "Not registered on Network". The signal meter shows full Signal.
I have set the Network type to Auto, and I have 3G activated on my SIM. Also checked with Airtel and they have confirmed the same.
Notification screen showing wat?
If it shows Emergency call only then youe device not connected to network
Use WCDMA Only
I had the same problem earlier with LPY Open Germany. I set Network Mode to WCDMA only and got the 3G network while roaming..... try this if helps...
Same here....but got solved somehow...i dont know what happened i was automatically connected after 8 hrs or so...i thought it was a problem from my service provider...

I took my Note to Samsung Service Centre today. The lady registering my complaint simply yanked out the battery without switching it off. When I switched it back on miraculously all my complaints were gone. The phone worked properly for another 8h or so.
Now at the time of writing this post, I have no internet connection, however this time I have no notification either.
So, I would like to know is it possible to check for myself whether its a carrier issue or a mobile issue?
likely carrier issue. have you check your sim in other device?

Hi,
I have patchy 3g but a good 2g signal when at home. The problem I have is my Z1 keeps flipping between the bad 3g and the good 2g.
When I'm at home I would like it to be forced to use the good 2g signal only so I would like it if the phone worked from 2g only when it recognises my home wifi.
My original thought was tasker but when I tried it, the radio section is not available, saying not compatible with this device.
Anyone know what else I could use ?
Thanks,
malty

When connected to wifi, doesn't the phone just turn off all mobile data? Mine doesn't show 2g or 3g or any indication of any mobile data being active when on wifi. Unless I'm missing something?

It's not data that's the problem. for calls and texts it is still connected to either a 2g or 3g mast. I need it to be looking for and connecting to a 2g mast only, since the 3g mast where I live is poor signal and is intermittent but since the phone would prefer a 3g over a 2g signal, it tries to connect to it anyway.
As stated I would like it to be in GSM (2G) only mode when I'm at home and automatically switch to 3g(preferred) and 2g when away from home.
Hi,
I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for but you could try installing this ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2463675
It's listed to have a force 2g option and you might be able to find a way to automatically trigger it.
I also found a Radio Switcher app in the Play Store, but again, not perfect.
Hope this helps.
Andrew
As far as I know, you can't have automated 3g to 2g switching even with a rooted device because android prohibits it.

tasker will do it but the radio section in tasker is greyed out with the explanation 'not available for this device'
From what I've read changing network settings is protected by Android, and thus not possible if running a rooted stock-rom.
If someone comes up with an idea how to rescan/update the settings without a reboot that works (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230207), please tell as I also have horribly bad coverage of >3G at home.

Happens to me too, we just got lte where I work, same thing still happens :/
happends to me also
Glad that I am not alone. Use to listen to Tune-In while on the road and now it cuts out for a few seconds every other minute or so. Sometimes I reach a stretch of road that I have no data. Also turn on Scout and it constantly says network connection has been lost, and network connection has been restored.
All the time the signal bars show that I have service.
Took my phone to the Sprint store today and all they did was a data reset, 786 I believe. This is the second one that I have had data signal issues with, the first one they said that it failed a radio test one and they replaced it. Also my girlfriend's phone seems to do the same thing. Never had issues like this with my HTC EVO LTE. Might actually reactivate and see if I can isolate to the phone verse the network.
Now the question is phone (which I would tend to be the case), or the network. If it is the phone, is it every phone issue or a bad batch?
I have updated from .230 firmware to .283 via Ota and root is preserved but after the update my phonr cannot detect 3g networks. Before it was fine. Does this happened to any one else?

Can't detect or detects but doesn't connect?
Check the APN list, you might need to select / reselect / add APN.
It doesn't detect any 3g network at all 2g is fine and I am in area where multiple 3g networks are available. BTW I am from India and in .230 firmware it was all fine.

Like genieass said It might be network related. I only offer a suggestion.
Did you try Settings > Wireless and Networks > Tap "More" > Internet Settings? Just tap it and wait a few seconds
The phone cannot detect 3g networks. 2g is fine 2g data is fine. But when I switch to wcdma or GSM/wcdma on network mode it cannot detect 3g networks at all. It just shows no network even though 3g is available. Trying manual searching for 3g networks is also showing no 3g networks.

I am speaking of data. If you are talking about proper 3g, I might have misled you. You seem to be looking for 3g calls etc? if so, pl ignore me.
My connection is 2g, data is 3g. I am on H+ most times. Firmware updates are faster OTA, 3G than wifi. Which connects thru a 512 mbps dataone adsl line.

The phone simply cannot detect 3g networks. The data part and Internet settings comes after the phone detects 3g networks. So no its cannot be done. When I am on wcdma only setting the phone doesn't show network ie I am on emergency mode. If I try manual searching of networks it doesnot show any 3g network even though I am in a coverage area with multiple 3g networks.

Open up dialpad and type in " *#*#4636#*#* ". Inside "phone settings" you might be able to adjust to some options which might work.
Restart your phone and confirm that the modification has been lost.
Unfortunately it is reset every bootup. So you might want to fallback to 4.4.2 (hack, or 4.3) and wait for solution from Sony.
Post the result of this to Sony Mobile Official Forum might help. Anyways, please report back after trying each option.:good:
After my update to 4.4.4, I lost the ability to access the Internet over my mobile network. I had full signal and even hdpda/hspda+ sometimes but no Internet at all. I realize its not the exact same issue but they might be related. I found out that my APN had been changed when I updated, so I hit settings>more>Internet settings and it fixed the problem. It didnt need to be connected to the Internet to do it either, it just worked on the same network connection that wasnt giving Internet. Hopefully this works for you too, since this caused me endless headaches when it happened.

Yeah but for me no signal when in WCDMA mode just shows emergency mode but when i switch to gsm mode it shows full signal. My APN are automatically downloaded every time i insert my sim card in the phone so APNs are fine asthey are auto downloaded on 2g. But no 3g signal even in full signal strength area. Seems like I have to do repair by PCC which i am trying to avoid as my internet connection is slow. I'll post if the repair is helpful. I was just trying to know if anyone else have the same problem or not.

If all suggestions here failed, then I am quite certain that either your network provider has a problem or your phone has a FW issue. Provided that you dd not fall the phone carelessly and damaged the modem, i would recommend you go search on google for this issue with your network provider on the search keywords. If no luck, Just downgrade to 4.4.2, then report to Sony as a bug.
Anyways, Good Luck
