Realizing that many people are having GPS issues (not only hardware) on the N5 and partly due to this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2523341 , I am posting here the GPS config file which should help alleviate most software issues while locking onto GPS Satellites.
It enables AGPS lock with a dirty threshold (much like iPhone) and then keeps improving your position to the nearest metre. So when you open a GPS app you are not in another continent but much nearer to actual location and then keeps getting better within seconds (especially with Open Sky visibility)
THIS IS NOT MY WORK. I HAVE BEEN USING THIS CONFIG SINCE LAST YEAR. DONE BY SOME PERSON HERE @ XDA
Method 1 - Flash attached file in recovery
Method 2 - Extract the gps.conf from the zip and push to /system/etc. Reboot
Wow, very nice. Huge improvement in locking onto satellites using GPS status. Thanks for sharing
I installed through recovery. I notice the GPS.conf file is dated Aug 2008. Can't believe improvements haven't been made since then. I haven't been outdoors to test it yet, to cold. Won't lock at a window.

Use this app and it will show you on a map which Sat in your area ... from my window it actually locks 2-3 that it can see and you can even see on map the ones it locked onto

This is great. Lock in under a second! That too precise! Never had I got a lock so quick, indoors! Thank You!:good:

I use GPS Status, tested it against GPS Test; they fix at about the same speed and same number of sats and same accuracy. I prefer the screen on GPS Status.
An interesting observation. I put my phone in airplane mode at home since I get bad to no reception (6PM to about 8 AM). I went outdoors were I know I get 1 bar to test GPS. In airplane mode, no lock in GPS Status or Test or Maps (sees 20 sats, but no lock). If I toggle airplane mode off, BAM, instant fix (9-10 sats). Then later in the day if I turn on airplane mode, GPS seems to work fine. No issues at all on my 2012 Nexus 7, so that tells me there's a software issue with phone radio and GPS. I have phone on "device only".
So if I know I need GPS, I make sure airplane mode is off. Compass (arrow) on Maps is still a little squirrely, Osmand compass direction is much more accurate.
How do I revert back to stock incase I need to?
THanks in advance.

The parameter of gps.conf file may be different depends on your country and continent. I used FasterGPS app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.fastergps&hl=enand it worked for me so far. It contains all the flashable gps.conf files for all available countries and all continents so that you can pick which suits you most. Or you can go to this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1233256 they also provides the gps.conf files as well, pick one and flash yourself.

That country specific files do not help so much so as the ones I linked since those ones don't have any parameters for agps defined at all.. Only changing ntp server to your country one doesn't help that much

I can't seem to find a straight answer to this so I'm starting a new thread.
With the JF3 firmware the GPS on my 2 phones is often not very accurate or completely loses it's position under what could be considered good conditions for a gps reciever.
Did the new firmware fix this problem?
Please only reply if you actually noticed the problem and can compare it with the new firmware.
Using GPS test is the phone now able to use signals with an snr of lower than 22?
No, it refuses to use GPS with snr under 22, as long as you don't locked them when they were higher. In that case it keeps them downto snr 17, and then drops them.

No and no....
Well that sucks, let's hope it's not a hardware problem
In contrast... I just flashed G3 and my GPS now locks in about 5 seconds.
It doesn't lock below 22... But for me it now doesn't need to.

Mine also locks in a few seconds, but it loses the lock again after a while. Then it locks again, the lock disappear, and so on. Completely useless as navigator.
This is quite worrying, because it suggests more than just a firmware problem.
To those who have flashed and it hasn't worked, some suggest flashing using the repartition option.
But this experience is why I don't want to flash my phone. If there's a hardware error, I can't rightly be taking it back.
Might get a HTC Desire and put the extra few quid up towards a 32 Gig memory card.

on further testing... My phone does use satellites of 19 to 22... But only if it is connected to less than 8 other satellites.
And I don't seem to have a disconnect issue.

Yes the problem isnt that it wont connect but that the thing often thinks you are on an offramp or a road next to the highway you are travelling on because the sinal is too weak/inaccurate. I tested this with 3 different nav programs and get the same result.

Let me get this straight, using GPS Test, you do see orange satellites through regular use?
This is all beginning to make sense now.
Unlike HTC which seems to use a GPS chip that is capable of 12 Satellite fixes, Samsung is using a GPS chip that can only lock onto 8.
I would think therefore that what it is trying to do, is to select the 8 strongest satellite signals which means it's already at a disadvantage, because as soon as you walk behind a tall building, it has to work to try and find and lock onto others. But when you walk past the building it goes back to the other satellites.
This probably explains why everything is jumping around. Because it's not using the weaker satellites in the distance until its too late.
Maybe you guys have the problem of "you hold it wrong"
when I put the phone's face upward, I got only 2-3 satelline locked
stick my phone up => 10 satellites locked and most of them are green
cheers
No - I have installed JG3 and still have the same problems. GPS is practically useless.
Its nice I still have my HTC touc hd - I get a pinpoint lock immediatelly.
Have you tried to use an external bluetooth GPS device ?
Don't think it's possible to use an external gps with android. How do you tell the os or app to use the external one instead?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
JG3 seems a lot better for me. Still not perfect, but better than previous versions were I only lost a GPS a couple of times opposed to ALL the damn time !
Well guess I just need to flash my phone and try it myself. I wish Samsung would just release an official update already.

Sarcasm never translates well over text... Unless you use italics..
getting a lock is a minor problem compared to MAINTAINING an accurate lock, does this fix address that issue or just the lock on time?
Well I gave this a shot, and now the GPS doesn't seem to function at all. The market tool GPS TEST, Navigation, Latitude, and the built in GPS testing tools (from the phone menu *#*#1472365*#*#) all hang requiring a force close.
But this is really no worse than the largely non-functional GPS I had in the first place so I'm not bothered.
UPDATE: Using "Fix Permissions" from Rom Manager fixed the FC's.....will be testing GPS now to see if it's any better.
UPDATE#2: Taking my daughters back to my ex-wife (oh the joys of divorce) I ran Navigation during the trip, letting my oldest daughter drive so I could pay attention to the accuracy. It took a good while (about a minute) to get a proper GPS fix, but once it did it remained accurate during the entire trip except for one instance where it bounced a few hundred yards off the route for a couple of seconds. This is a marked improvement over my previous experiences where it would bounce off route like that numerous times during a Navigation run.
So...better...but still a bit less accurate than I'm used to with other Android devices.
Italics you say. Nice I'll give that a try next time.

Tried it. Got a fix in about 5 seconds indoors and pretty accurate. The compass is still all over the place. But as for accuracy it helped a lot thanks eugene.

I changed mine to ms-based and it works well. In certain buildings, however, it cannot get a lock on any satellites even when it detects as many as 10.
A weird thing that started recently is that in lbdtestmode, when running a position test, it takes forever to get a lock or sometimes to even find satellites. However, if I open google maps, it proceeds to quickly lock my position with 10m accuracy. Then if I run a posistion test it finds a 8-12 satellites and locks on quickly.
What is weird is that it used to be the opposite: I would have to get a lock in posistion test before google maps would get a lock. May also just be a coincidence or a placebo effect.
thats becuase google maps uses network to get intial fix.. change it to ms assisted not ms based which does the same thing
Thank you for the post Eugene, my gps is actually functional now, locked on very fast and is accurate. Donate link?

Thanks for the patch eugene373 but unfortunately it seems to do nothing for my GPS. Still takes forever for sats to get into view and never locks in to more than 1.
Unfortunately this didn't work for me at all. I even re flashed to stock then applied the gps fix and for me the gps was worse then any other thing I have tried. I never got a satellite lock, used to at least get 1 and it put me at times on the other side of the street, the accuracy decreased greatly
Greetings,
I download GPS test from the market and the GPS finds satellites within a second. Yet when I access google's navigation program, it just says searching for GPS and after about 15mins I get a GPS connection.
I've tried most fixes but none of them seem to work. So rather then spending hours trying to get google's navigation to work effectively, should I be trying another program or am I just missing something?
Thanks in advance.

Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
That's probably because Google navigation also possibly waits until a certain level of accuracy is reached too.. 200m accuracy is useless for navigation..
you may find satellites fast but from a so called "cold start" it takes up to 10 minutes to lock onto several satellites before it can calculate your position. this should change when you use it more often in the same location. you may then also set it to "hot start" - see SGStools app - GPS service menu - or search the GPS forums here. good luck
Anyone else having problems using the GPS on this device? I've tried several different GPS apps and none are working. The problem is that is finds 2-3 satellites, but never gets locked.

1 - Download "GPS Status & Toolbox" (EclipSim) from market
2 - Enable Location from Settings in order to use A-GPS data.
3 - Enable Use GPS from Settings
4 - Run "GPS Status & Toolbox" and then go to "GPS Status & Toolbox" menu where you can clear A-GPS and then download newest A-GPS data.
If you can't get a fix after this, you might have faulty SW or HW

Hi,
I'm using Sygic Mobile Maps 10 8.2 and Google Maps (unlocked with navigation). Both work fine with GPS and fix is within 5 sec.
Yet to try my stereo Bluetooth headset, will try in a sec ...
Edit: Headset at work, will try tomorrow...
This phone is very good for gps navigation.
Google Maps Navigation, Sygic Mobile Maps 10, Copilot Live, Navigon and Igomyway are working fine. They give me a lock within a few seconds.

- enable GPS-satellites
If you're using WiFi the fix will be faster then without.
Oh yes, and one more thing: don't forget to insert your SIM-card.

Do a "hard factory reset"
Turn off phone
hold HOME and VOLUME DOWN and POWER until you see the android. Then wait.
Done. It now sees 10 satelittes indoors, and uses them all, as opposed to maybe seeing one, and never using any.

I tried to use gps.conf and supl method but no luck, the issue weren't there. My gps was a jerk, last week i spent 30minutes to fix the satellite while driving in town. Even standing under the sky, the fastest I am able to fix is 200seconds, not to mention there are many times they wont even fix.
But my problem was stopped once i changed from stock to other rom. so I guess there is something else wrong in the stock rom, as the other roms are able to perform well even without gps.conf. (around 20-30 sec fix time).
So I guess only when your gps is able to lock satellite, gps.conf will help to speed it up. At least that's what happen to me
Ok, I'm fixing this phone for someone who had complained to me that it doesn't ever get a lock. I had downloaded GPS status and found out it hardly discovers any satellites. For comparison's (or rather no-comparison's, lol) sake I was standing outside for almost 2 minutes and all it got was it discovered only 3 satellite(that too in grey) in that time while my galaxy s3 was able to get 12 sat lock in less than 15 secs..
Anyway coming back to the point, is it just only me or its an common issue with this set?
I did try modifying the gps.conf to put NTP and XTRA server in there, however it doesn't seem to do anything. Is there anything which can be done ?
For the FIRST TIME, It will take sometimes to connect to the GPS satellites. Try GPS Test tool to view GPS data and you can clear GPS data from here.
If you are using a custom rom, startover flashing the same.
