2.Find the APK using a Filemanager tool and open it on your device, then click "Install".
3.Once installed, open up the Safestrap application as you would any other app.
4.Agree to the disclaimer that you won't try to sue me and hunt me down with a rifle if you manage to break your phone..
5.Then use the "Install Recovery" button. You should see the current version down in the lower left corner of the window. And the
"Status:" should say "Installed" when you're done.
6.From there you can reboot and you *should* see a new splash screen during the boot up. While this is showing you can enter Safestrap Recovery using the [ menu ] button.
7.That's it for the installation!

This thread on forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758 has a list of successful roots but the Galaxy S4 I537 isn't listed. I have the official OTA android 4.3 on mine. I bricked a previously factory unlocked android 4.2.2. An AT&T tech resurrected my dead I537 with the official AT&T 4.3 OTA. I don't have root access like I did on 4.2.2. If anyone knows how to keep my 4.3 OTA upgradable (by AT&T push) to 4.4.2 android, AND have root access while waiting for the OTA upgrade, please let me know.

THis process isnt working for me...
Hi,
I have tried updating my SE i9305 LTE with this new firmware, but on restarting the phone always starts up in factory mode (text with phone parameters appears on the screen) and without access to the phone network. I believe the previous androiw version to this was 4.2?, but cannot be sure.
I have tried rooting the phone with CF-Auto-Root-m3-m3zh-gti9305, and again keep getting the factory mode upon reset, and the root checker program indicates the device is not properly rooted.
Any ideas what may be going wrong?
THanks all,
Carbar

I tried this with exactly the same result. After wiping the cache and factory reset, the phone takes a while to boot up. Once it does, it is in german, but the black overlay screen with all the firmware parameters continues to appear. Could this have to do with the fact that this is a UK phone (maybe its a hardware issue)?
I have read that in order to remove the factory mode, the phone needs to be rooted, but again I haven't found instructions that actually work.
Any more ideas? Am I really the only one with this issue?
Thanks,
carbar

Yeah, recovery works.. Only that my update is smaller (around 130MB) and I presume it's because you went from .2 and I am trying to update from .5.. hm, maybe I should downgrade it and then try?
If it's the same model it should work.. But I thought it would work even with older recovery, I'd give it a try. As we're from the same country we should have the same model
I thought so to.. but no..
only if I'm doing something wrong, and I don't see it.. from .2 it went to .5 with no problem.
Maybe it's because I restored this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55107684&postcount=6

That ota is not a flashable zip. I am not keen on HTC devices and how to flash otas, but I am quite sure that, if it can be flashed, it must be flashed with stock recovery... If you got the ota, reflash original recoveryaand ota will succeed

This is the reason why I must have root.
Please what is the simpler way to do that?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but here are some infos:
I think there is some misinformation for beginner users here, in order to root a phone you either
A) flash a custom firmware / unlock the bootloader / flash a different kernel / ...
B) need to find a security vulnerability in android and exploit it. Now you can imagine, finding those loopholes is not that easy since google tries it best to not write errors in the code.
Here is a good read about understanding the 101: http://geeksided.com/2014/06/16/towelroot-exploit-reveals-security-nightmare-android/
Since we have an Intel CPU, any exploit will not work without modifying it to our platform!
For example, Kingroot is for MediaTek MT6582 devices.
Towelroot uses this: http://blog.nativeflow.com/the-futex-vulnerability
http://blog.nativeflow.com/escalating-futex
http://blog.nativeflow.com/pwning-the-kernel-root
On android JB there was a big master key vulnerability, which Saudik Cydia Impactor exploitet.
jcase was really nice and wrote an exploit for that on a weekend (thanks again!) but since our phones got upgraded to Kitkat 4.4.2 with secuirty patches from 4.4.4, all vulnerabilities are patched up to version 4.4.4
So what does this mean and what can you do?
Either find a vulneraribility yourself or if there is an exploit that works for devices with 4.4.4, there is a very high chance this will work for us. It just needs to get adjusted to our intel cpu. The easiest way would be to write to the person who wrote an exploit and ask them nicely to fix something up for an intel device.
Here is a list of vulneraribilities for 4.4.4: https://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/...es=on&cpe_version=cpe:/o:google:android:4.4.4
Moforoot also allows flashing firmware that is not signed by Motorola, however, we do not have any fastboot firmware of the KK version, only JB+ota to KK
Otherwise you could use moforoot to create a pre rooted firmware for a locked BL
Wow, thanks for the explanation. Now I understand it, I thought the x86 translator would translate the root program, too. ?

the ARM-x86 translator is called houdini, you can read more about it here: https://commonsware.com/blog/2013/11/21/libhoudini-what-it-means-for-developers.html or here is a good pic:

Since exploits are aiming on the core parts of the android OS / kernel / ... you basicially really need to write something for intel's x86.
I don't have my Razr I anymore (it broke and motorola replaced it with a Moto G ) I can't try things like moforoot, but if you want to give it a try, download and start this app: https://mofo.disekt.org/#usage
If that works, you only need to get your hands on a fasboot kitkat firmware (not out yet) to be able to modify it with moforoot, or maybe there is a way of creating a flashable system img file, but I'm not sure about that, maybe @Hazou knows.
Again, moforoot would allow you to add root to the system image file that you could flash with fastboot (the manual version of RSDlite) with a locked BL
I'm trying to root my S5 Active. It's never been rooted before and I've never rooted a phone before besides a simple one touch with towelroot on an old spare phone. It's updated to Android 5.0 with the 3.4.0 Kernel. Any help with simple instructions would be great. no

i have not tried this yet, but probably will soon.
towelroot
I've tried to use the towelroot system on my s5 active and it will not work, the end game tells you - your phone is not supported. so it is a just a waste of your time to try that root. I am in the same boat and looking a root program too. so good luck.
S-5 Active SM-G870A phone and root issue
I hope this is the correct spot for this post.
I have a Galaxy S5 Active SM-G870A that was rooted when using 4.2.2. When it was still rooted I did an update to 4.4.4 (shows G870AUCU1AOA2) which took away the root status and now shows as a "Custom ROM" when booting. I cannot get to Lollipop update because the update fails, I think due to the Custom ROOM status. I wanted to re-root the phone to use an app to reset the custom ROM issue but cannot find a CF-Auto Root file for the AT&T Active. I was going to try flashing it with Odin using the NE4 kernel to root it with towel root, but I can't find the original kernel to download to flash it back to after I root it. When I originally rooted the phone I had XP on my home PC, after updating my PC I no longer have the information saved that I used to root it the first time. I know it was with Odin, but don't remember how and have been doing periodic internet searches to no avail.
This has been going on for quite a while now and is driving me crazy because I cannot root the phone or update it in it's current condition. Can someone help me? Thanks so much for your time.

Wondershare is really sketchy (kind of like KingRoot, which has been known to send your device information to China). I would not recommend using it.
My N6 is still waiting 7.1.1 OTA, surprisingly, security patches come on schedule, but almost three months after release, OTA is not coming. Yes, I know I can sideload it, but one of the reasons I decided not to root it was not losing the ability of OTA updates.... any hint?

You can flash the stock rom and you will receive OTA . Unlocking bootloader dosen't mean root.
You WILL receive OTA updates just do as follows
1. Unlock bootloader
2. Flash latest fastboot images
3. Lock bootloader - optional.
Make sure you don't keep TWRP recovery. It isn't that good for installing OTA packages via system update.
Please follow the guides if you don't know how to do them. Download the latest one named 7.1.1

@Pocket_rocket Just a warning though... Unlocking your bootloader will wipe your device.
Use the full OTA image instead. I believe there's no need for an unlocked bootloader then.

Edit: a word of caution... If you decide to sideload the OTA, it's not a bad idea to keep your bootloader unlocked. If anything goes wrong along the way, you can then fix it.
And about the update issue. Are you on AT&T? They haven't approved 7.1.1 yet...
Edit 2 (I just woke up, gimme a break ): If you use Android Pay or anything else dependent on SafetyNet, you can't keep your bootloader unlocked (without further tinkering) since that triggers SN.

@Pocket_rocket Just a warning though... Unlocking your bootloader will wipe your device.

Hi Didgeridoohan, Mine is now NBD92D (AT&T version and update thru OTA) but I don't see any AT&T logo on the back and my city(HK) does not have any AT&T service. Do you have any idea on this(Actually my Nexus 6 is from Australia).
In addition, if I keep sideload the OTA image N6F26U will cause any problem(except the Android Pay)? As you mention that Google does not approve any 7.1.1 AT&T version(Just tried to sideload N6F26U, it said can't install over a newer version).
Thanks so much in advance.

You can flash the stock rom and you will receive OTA . Unlocking bootloader dosen't mean root.

Yes, but I am too lazy to reconfigure my phone after wipe. Tons of apps, accounts, tweaks etc.

No. I'm on Vodafone (Spain) but I purchased this phone right on Amazon, so no pesky carrier should be acting as a man in the middle, I guess...
I mean, the phone runs decently well, but, given the fact that 7.1.1 will be the last update for this model, I want it. I wonder if is just a matter of patience or there is some other issue that is preventing my phone to get the OTA.
Thanks.
I have the same issue, m on NBD92D, which seems to ATT only, but there's no AT&T in India. I tried sideloading N6F26U, but it didn't work. Any idea how I can get 7.1, apart from waiting?
