Title says it all. I am one of a few who flashed the current broken stock rom in the development section. The dev stated he can't get it to work right now. (Not sure if it's difficult or he's short on free time...) Anyways, I got my own running on my phone. I'm zipping up the rom right now if anybody wants to flash away.

What the ... are you serious? Knox Bootloader is the devil. Everyone should use ONLY a deknoxed rom. ONLY. And never ever ever use your thread.
Some people . like myself could care less about Knox. I was worried for a while but once it was tripped I really don't care.

IIRC there are two KNOX issues on this phone and people tend to get them confused.
First off there is the KNOX Bootloader that has the warranty flag thingy. Once this bootloader is installed it cannot be removed or downgraded AFAIK. Also if you root and/or change roms it trips the counter which some people fear will void their warranty even though I haven't seen this actually be the case with anyone so far.
The second KNOX is the KNOX files included in the OS. This can (somewhat) easily be removed from a rooted S4 even if it has the KNOX bootloader. This is what I did with my GF's S4 as she blindly installed the 4.3 update right when she got it.
Now people have made their own 4.3 update (minus the KNOX stuff) that can be installed on the side to update the OS without installing KNOX. This is the route I would have taken if I had the chance.
I think the biggest fear with the 4.4 KitKat update is that it will once again force KNOX back onto the system - even if it had already been removed. Because of this many people are hesitant to install the OTA update until they are sure that KNOX can be removed from it - or until a version is made that can be manually installed that already has KNOX removed.

Any thoughts on what people will be doing once the S5 rolls out? It is probably a safe bet that they will come with Knox or a Knox like system factory installed.
Sent via mobile
Maybe by then there'll be a way to remove/disable KNOX (bootloader KNOX, to clarify)
I remember once HTC did their bootloaders, people either did an engineering bootloader or a custom unlocked bootloader. (let's not speak of the Evo 3D) Here's hoping we don't have to go that route with Samsung devices.

The latest firmware update for the AT&T S4 (NB1) does not yet have a direct root method. The obstacles for obtaining root on this phone (S5) and that phone are generally the same. So I would say root will be achieved on the S4 (newest firmware) before or at the same time as root for the S5. So I would say you are correct about it taking a little while.
I was under the impression that the CF-AUTO ROOT Method would work on the at&t SGH-I 337. Please advice

Nope. Won't work. There is no direct root method for NB1 yet. There is a work-around that involves SafeStrap and installing a pre-rooted ROM, but that's it at the moment.

I'm sure it's been asked and answered, but since you mentioned it.. The same type of work-around, using SafeStrap and installing a pre-rooted stock ROM, can't be used on the S5?
Here is a mirror to the Cf auto root method I used using Odin and it gave me for access I can't speak for the NB1 as my s4 was 6 months old at the time.

Pretty sure safe strap requires root first on JB ROM, then flashing a pretty rooted kit Kat update.

(Quoted from Chainfires Google+) That's impossible to predict, but I certainly wouldn't bet on it. It may take months or never happen. If root is important to you, get an unlocked device and be sure you'll have it.

I am rooted using CHAIN Fire's CF AUTOROOT - the trick is you have to use the Latest ODIN - 3.10.6 I think - here is a link

Donf use the ODIN that comes with CF Auto Root unless he has updated it to the one I have linked to here. THis is the only one that works that I know of.

I haven't figured it out yet. I denied it until I know what it is. Also has to manually freeze and remove all the Knox crap, SuperSU didn't ask me to disable it...

Yes, it will trip your Knox counter.
That brings me to a question I had, hopefully @Chainfire can answer. ..
After root, supersu didn't ask me to deactivate Knox; why? is it safe to go and freeze or remove all the Knox crap?
Unfortunately I'm waiting until I hear more information on Knox in regards to Samsung Pay. I know Chainfire and others mentioned the possibility of it needing an un-tripped counter, but until we know for sure I'm staying un-rooted (which is killing me).

I think he was saying the logic of 'you never had it, therefore you won't miss it if you don't get it' was stupid. Whereas you were being a little more gracious saying it was 'interesting' logic. In all honesty, it is a ridiculous argument. Of course you will 'miss' features that the phone should include if you lose them due to root. Even if you would not have used the feature, it still is a missing feature, just one you personally do not care about.

Looks promising. I like that it doesn't trip KNOX but will the "custom status" be a problem?
I'm 7 days into this phone, still have a week to return/exchange it if something is defective. So far it's running fine, dont foresee need to take it back.
But .............. If I did need to return it, is there an "unroot" and/or a way to remove the custom status ?
*** EDIT *** I haven't read all the way thru the root thread, so if my question has already been answered I apologize.
No Custom Status
I have now rooted twice, flashing the firmware posted in this forum in the middle. My phone has not shown custom on the bootscreen once. I also encrypt before I root, so maybe thats it. Who knew you could be encrypted with root?

Yes, all the typical rooting items work as they should. You can even flash zips with fireflash, and not trip Knox.
It's NOT in the bootscreen where you can see the custom status. It's in settings / about device / status. In the last line it crearly says "Custom" under Device status.

You'll generally have to manually flash updates once you've rooted, the OTA process will usually refuse to update a device running a modified system image. Not that big a problem, but sometimes it confuses people.

Or, install Samsung drivers, then Odin, and flash a stock image that way to return to stock, then OTA works fine. There is another thread around here with a stock image, I'd suggest anyone looking to return to stock in order to complete an OTA, to review that thread.

Would we be able to use fireflash and keep root if somebody were to get the OTA and customize it for our needs to keep root, etc? I know it's a hard question to answer, but maybe you guys have experience with other locked bootloader devices.

This is similar to how we did it on the AT&T S4 using safestrap to flash touchwiz based roms that were pre-rooted. Unfortunately, we wouldn't be able to flash non-touchwiz based roms without an unlocked bootloader.

I believe the purpose of this OTA update is to: 1. Update the bootloader from OC4 to OF2 (maybe to prep for 5.1 to roll out?) and 2. Patch the Samsung keyboard vulnerability. I don't think they'd be able to fit much more into an update this small.

The update is 300MB. I've installed 4.4.4 ROMs and GApps smaller than that. I'm interested to see what all is getting updated, as I'm sure many other people here are.
Yep.. I shall be avoiding this one for now.
From reports I have seen, I think many have taken the update expecting 5.1 lol
This one just seems to plug up more holes. Probably a good update for normal users. Probably a bad one for ppl planning on trying to get root.
I am curious about the state of the bootloader in this update tho. Maybe there is a small chance it's not locked down as bad and will allow a downgrade
Can anyone fill me in on that part? Wishful thinking but you never know u guess

I was hoping the same about the bootloader but I've been burned 3 times now taking updates and 2 weeks later a root exploit it available and I can't see them making it easier lol.

On reboot, I got the "System software not authorized by AT&T hasa been found on your phone". No way to boot up. Hoping for a solution from one of the nice folks here.
Sounds like this bootloader is even more evil than oc4

I'm not rooted because I was stupid and didn't do it before upgrading to Lolipop. As a normal nobrooted user it seems fine. I hope it fixed some of the performance issues I was having.

Umm it depends what ur after.. root still may be possible in the future... if u want to wait out for that I wouldn't update.
From what I see the update is anti root and fixes keyboard exploit.. that's about it.

Lol don't feel bad I had upgraded to lollipop with root , had backups and everything but bricked my phone and somehow loaded the non rooted lollipop and it blows I had an anTuTu score of 43 thousand and now I'm lucky to get 33 not to mention upgrading my moto x rite b4 the eploit came out so yeah I saw this and said no way even though I tried to think hopefully the bootloader upgrade would let us downgrade back to 4.4.2 again lol

I just caught my phone trying to install the update but thank you samsung for a removable battery lol . Just a warning don't just keep hitting remind me it will just start updating .
I haven't got anything yet.. I'm hoping my custom apn with fota removed will delay this
I think it should be criminal for samsung or att to be able to "force" updates without user consent.
Even if they are patching security exploits.
I think you can say for certain that they are probably more concerned that you can use this exploit to root your phone or do things with it they don't want you to... more so than they are worried about the keyboard exploit harming you.
It's just not normal for att to act this fast to patch something like this.
Keep holding out, I'm sure we can acomplish something using the exploit

The update started downloading. I froze the update service via titanium back up. I am currently on 5.0 stock rooted and busy boxed. Waiting to hear if locks root out...

There's another thread going that reports to have the stock recovery image for OC4. I wonder if it's possible to downgrade via odin to roll back this update to include restoring the keyboard vulnerability that's being explored by @TheBadgers as a potential means to achieve root.
Can anyone help me out with rooting my s5 active? Its the SM-G870A model with android 5.0, baseband G870AUCU2BOF3, and kernel 3.4.0.
No, can't be done. This was the best place to ask so save yourself the time and stop Googleing. It can not be done.
just want to confirm that this cannot be done even if we are not concerned about tripping KNOX sensor? i am so sad, i've been away from rooting devices and i should have known better when i was updating that i should have rooted first.
Still no. If you took OF3 there is no going back or rooting. Sorry, some work is being done but no progress and probably won't happen.
any updates?
Been 2 months any updates? Like a DA i updated to this current version OTA, as a long time rooter I should have known better.

Negative, OF2 and OF3 still unrootable, and at this point i'd say the chances are pretty slim.
Any news????? To Root G870AUCU2BOF3 or downgrade?
Still no.

Long time lg user here im actually comming from a g4 to a active because one i love the phone im a mechanic i cracked my screen and it works fine just dont wanna dammage it any more. Im so fed up with lgs locked bls. Ive done a lotta test with g4 and the encryptions used are crazy. Ive seen unlocks and roots come year s later. Were dealing with a no rootable situation on marshmallow. Bootloader in mm checks integrity on system partition also no bl unlock no root. And android n will even be worse. I personaly think unless it a completly low end phone development is dead unles u buy a developer or internqtional series phones. The new encryprions use 256 bit keys which are just about uncrackable

I came from an iphone and jailbreaking was rather simple. I am trying to root by s5 active to get all that crap off of it that it came with. I am finding models that are similar to mine but none that are exact (the same as the OP). There is still no way to do it on my phone?
