Listers,
Am looking for insight as to whether I need to be on Verizon's network in order to get the OTA update(s). Have a spanking new Moto X that I'm going to root, and it seems part of the Slapmymoto process involves downgrading from, then upgrading again to 4.4 via OTA.
I've briefly activated the phone to ensure that everything works, then deactivated it, as I don't have time this weekend to tackle. I'd like to run the root process before reactivating the phone.
But this approach will only work if I can access the OTA via wifi. Can anyone confirm that this indeed possible?
Any and all information appreciated.
TIA,
GG
Yes it will come over WiFi.

OTAs will push over WiFi but I think you may have to have the phone active on an account for that to happen.

Just hurry up since we are going to get the 4.4.2 OTA soon and once that happens, you won't be able to root. And don't take the 4.4.2 OTA once you root without reverting back to stock.

but will it be pushed if the phone is not active on an account at the time? I believe that is what he is asking. I know if the phone is active on the account it will be pushed over WiFi, but I am not sure if you take the phone off of the account that it will be pushed.
Yes, has nothing to do with being activated. If Verizon pushed and OTA, any device getting that OTA will get it with a data connection regardless of it being cellular or WiFi connectivity and/or in service or not.

Yes it will, the update trigger-ability is based on the ROM itself, not the network you are on currently. If you have the Verizon ROM, then it's sent out OTA on their Network and also from the web. Think of it this way, it's all coming from the same folder somewhere on the internet, Verizon is just also pushing the particular "link" through the radio waves too. You don't have to be on their network to get the update, just online with an internet connection.
Very interesting stuff - thanks all for the quick responses. I suspected it was possible, but wasn't sure.
Best,
GG

You know come to think about it, I don't think you even need WiFi because I think you can get the OTA using Motorola Device Manager simply by connecting your phone to your PC if the Motorola Device Manager is installed on your PC.

That would require your PC to either downloaded the file itself or your MDM software already coming with the latest OTA. However, in order to get the next firmware, you need to be connected to the internet.

Everytime I plug my phone into my PC, the Motorola Device Manager starts and checks for updates. The Motorola site says it will update your Android version, but yes, your PC must be connected to the Internet for that to happen because the MDM checks for the updates via the Internet connection.
How Do I Update the Software on My Phone or Tablet Using a USB Cable
I actually don't like this feature and stop it from doing it because I don't want it to update my phone. But I already have a driver problem and don't want to uninstall the MDM and make it worse potentially.
Finished up this evening. Can confirm the OTA will be delivered via wifi.

Just received my Moto X AT&T shipped from Costco, system version is 139.9.51.ghost_ATT.en.US -so would appear I can root? (and then hopefully take the update without losing root? I recall seeing a thread, hopefully for the version I have)
Can the update be "pushed" onto the device without my accepting it, as to whether I would need to root (if I wanted to root) quickly to block it?
Thanks

no but you will get continual pop ups unless you the phone then disable motorola ota 1.0 and updater.apk (i think just updater.apk will suffice) with Titanium back up.

Thanks, I thought that was the case, but wanted to confirm quickly (with some, SGS4, it's pushed to the phone whether you accept or not, unless you're rooted.)

not sure if it downloads it automatically or not (i don't think it does but it may). Even if it does download automatically it won't update it unless you click ok when it prompts you. I would root and disable OTiA until you figure out what you are going to do about it.

looks like it's either with PwnMyMoto, or Motoroot, appears the first is better? Looks like both are done with ADB which was a bit difficult, have only used it once, used it to remove safestrap from the SGS4 I had so I could return it

The only thing that I know of is that it will not update if the battery is low. LOL. Other than that, I do not know how to stop it as I understand updates are forced after denying them 3 times. I could be wrong.

Got the notification this morning and denied it. Froze the OTA in Titanium Backup so it didn't try and apply the update later.
I tried to update, but I got an error saying my phone was suspected of being Rooted.
has anyone un-rooted and then installed the update and then rooted it again?

I'm rooted but stock and took the update fine and keep the root... Luck maybe?
Same here @yuckycool. It auto updated, but root persisted.

sdcard error. had that with my lg g2. get a new sim card and factory reset it should be fine after. sucks but thats the only way i found to fix it
So i keep being prompted to get the new OTA update and whenever i try to download and install it, it reboots goes to the install screen, gets about 1/4 of the way through, says error and then reboots to an update unsuccessful page
After digging around my phone i also noticed it says my software was modified on the status page
But obviously ive never rooted this phone as its pretty much impossible at the moment
Has anyone experienced something similar and found a way to fix it?

I am unable to obtain the moforoot util to do this. When I put in my ID on the moforoot page, it says my device is not supported. I know for a fact the model and current OS on it. Its 5.1 updated already which is probably why the website is rejecting my request to obtain the util.
I do not think the bootloader will allow me to downgrade. If anybody has a solution, please let me know.
Note: Using XT1254 w/ latest 5.1 update from Aug-Sept.

If you want to flash an official update that is greater than or equal to the version you're on now, you don't need mofo. You could use fastboot, rsdlite, Motorola device manager or the Verizon upgrade assistant. The upgrade assistant is probably the easiest way to go. That's the annoying pop up software you get whenever you plug your phone into your computer.

I tried all 3 different options and none of them work. Then I went into Verizon store and asked them to do it and they told me that they don't do that anymore. Only contacts, photos, etc.
The store told me to send it to Motorola for them to do it. I'm sure there is an ISP somewhere or some trick button internally for them to unlock the bootloader, but nobody is saying.
I am out of options, and I am ready to send it to whomever can fix it for me. PM me if you can guarantee to do it and send it back.

Hi, my Nexus is on Android 5.0.1 (LRX22C). I haven't rooted or unlocked the bootloader; everything is totally stock. But I'm unable to successfully install the Android 5.1 OTA update. My phone downloads it, verifies it, then reboots to begin the installation process. After working on the update for a while, I see an error message (with an android on its back and a red "X"). The phone stays on that screen for a while, then eventually reboots without having installed the update. I've tried clearing cache, and it doesn't help. Anyone have any ideas?

Yeah, I've sideloaded before with other devices, but I'd like not to have deal with wiping my phone to unlock the bootloader right now. I'd thought that by not rooting or messing with the bootloader, I'd keep things simple and be able to easily apply OTA updates. So I'm very frustrating that this isn't working. Any idea why this might be happening?
Thanks!

No, you do not need to wipe or unlock to sideload. Post #3 in the thread I linked, simple instructions on sideloading.
As for why this is happening, anyone's guess but it could, somehow, have something to do with your device having the T-Mobile Sim and being from Google play.

OK, I'll give it a shot. Thanks! Any idea which OTA I want? I'm guessing it's LMY47M, since I'm on a T-Mobile SIM, even though the device was bought from Google? Need I worry that that build isn't up on Google's "Factory Images for Nexus Devices" page? And is there any risk that installing an update this way will make it more complicated to get OTA updates in the future? (I was hoping that by doing things the official way this time, I could avoid having to monkey around with stuff like this.)
Thanks!

Yes, you want the LRX22C to LMY47M OTA as I said before. No, you don't need to worry about it not being on the images page. Also a no for it affecting your ability to get OTA's in the future. On a Nexus, this is pretty much as official as getting the OTA natively.
OK, an update: got an error installing the update any way I tried, even after a factory reset. Called Google support, and they're replacing the phone for me.

Unlock first. Too many been bricked on that update with bootloader locked. I wouldn't take it. Win 10 didn't jack with my adb. I have full SDK tho. Some are using the 15 minute adb/fastboot. Latest for all carriers is I version unless you are on TMobile then it is the one that says TMobile only. They don't have the security update yet. No need for TWRP yet as long as unlocked. Get it booted and see if everything works. Do NOT relock. DO NOT use toolkit. Do it manually with fastboot commands.
