[Q] Duplicate Images in Album app. - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm banging my head against the wall on this one...
My Camera taken pictures located in /DCIM/100ANDRO are duplicated when viewing in the Album App. One image is located in /Legacy/DCIM/100ANDRO and one is located in /0//DCIM/100ANDRO . Yes, I know they are the same thing, just symlinked locations. Pictures located within the DCIM directory and other subdirectories are not effected, moving the pictures to another location within DCIM or renaming 100ANDRO directory fixes the issue. I've wiped App Data and MediaData, cache unistalled the app, changed versions . Everything I can think of, but what ever picture is located within /DCIM/100ANDRO/ gets shown twice in the gallery. Even removing the pics from the folder, deleting the folder and taking a picture with the camera so the folder rebuilds, then placing the pictures back in still results in the same issue.
Any ideas? :crying:
BTW There are 700+ pictures in the folder.

Did you try one of these media rescan tools?

Yep, it's re-scanned several times. The problem is the Album App sees two different locations /Legacy/ and /0/ which are actually symlinked to the same location. I assume before this was ignored but now the App sees it. My last resort is factory reset , if i have to do that i'll wait till the new version of my FW is available.

Gallery is not honoring .nomedia

I don't know what I am doing wrong. I have placed a file called .nomedia in each of the image folders I don't want in the gallery, but they remain.
I've restarted the phone, Force Stop, and Clear Data. I've unmounted and remounted the SD card, manually, and through the USB mount.
Even deleted an image through the gallery and it refreshed.
To create the file I tried:
-touch .nomedia
-creating a file called .nomedia in a text editor
-empty .nomedia files, and ones with something in them
-creating it on the phone, and on the computer
The file has no 'hidden extension' I'm sure of that, especially when I used touch. I can see the file in ASTRO when viewing hidden files, it is correct.
I've either gone completely crazy, my phone is messing with me, or I've overlooked something very simple.
Any one have any ideas?
Running stock 2.2 right now.
Add a "." to the beginning of folder name instead.
Yes, I know that works. But I would prefer not to do that. Because I can't easily browse to those folders, as I need them for other things in different applications, some of which won't let me view the hidden files.
I am beginning to wonder if I should try a wipe of the SD card and put everything back on. It seems that there is something fishy going on.
I've recently done this with several folders on my N1, a few that had ringtone mp3's in it and some others with jpg's I didn't want showing up in notification or gallery.
After remounting the SD card, they no longer showed in Gallery... but you've done lots more than that, so I can't imagine what the problem could be.
I just created a new file using Ghost Explorer, but have also done it in the past mounting the SD card and creating the filename (touch)
Ok, so not sure how I fixed it, because I went the nuclear route. Backed it up, formatted, and copied everything back. Also opened the gallery while it was unmounted, and recreated all the .nomedia files.
Something there fixed it...
Wait a minute, maybe not... I don't see any images apart from the Picasa linked ones
The logcat actually showed that it was finding and ignoring .nomedia files though.
Well, I'll just have to find a happy medium. I'll give it some time to see if it will scan for more, and check for extra .nomedia in the wrong places.
Oh how lovely, they're all back. And I still see a whole lot of .nomedia being ignored in the logcat.
Eh, enough fiddling for the day.
Could you show us the lines in logcat where it's ignoring .nomedia?
Oh, it's not very helpful. No mention of the directory. Just a lot of lines saying
Code:
D/ ( 3214): found .nomedia, skipping directory
Over and over, exactly the same.
You say you placed a file called .nomedia in folders you want hidden but they still show. What about folders that already have .nomedia, are they showing as well? Maybe, if you haven't tried. Copy an orignal .nomedia file from a folder not showing up in your gallery to your personal folders.
It sounds like you created the .nomedia file from your phone directly. I don't know how that works, but here's what worked for me:
Open text editor (notepad in Windows), File -> Save As, give ".nomedia" as the name, and under "Save as type", use "All files". This made a file that worked for me.
Also make sure you have the file browser showing file extensions, so you know that .nomedia file isn't actually .nomedia.xxx.

Yeah, I've tried that too, what I think is that there is some sort of cache or something in the gallery app that I an't get rid of. I've tried another gallery app form the market, and it works with the .nomedia perfectly. If this really ends up driving me crazy I'll wait until I flash CM6 and see if that fixes it, just don't want to right now while I'm away on vacation.

No, if you read my original post I've created the file many times, many ways. I know about extensions, I know how these things work. I've always just used touch before to do it, but this time since it didn't work I tried many other ways just to be sure. ls -al on the directory shows it is .nomedia exactly, nothing more, nothing less.

Yeah i'm in the same boat, i've got Google maps icons in the gallery and some other assorted stuff that doesn't belong there. Did a Google search on the .nomedia thing, tried to incorporate a .nomedia (TXT) file into the offending folder a couple different ways but they're still there. I think i'll do the same, flash CM6 then go from there.
Interesting thought about the cache thing, I wonder if it could be something related?
Did you all clear the Media cache? I'd say force close it, clear its cache, then relaunch it?
Something weird is going on.. I had this happen too, but only because I hadn't remounted my SD card.

Yup, I mentioned that in the first post. Force stopped it and cleared the cache.
There seems to literally be nothing left to do other than try a complete wipe, which I will do when I get CM6 on it.

Where do I find the folder of my camera pictures? How to hide?

Where do I find the folder of my camera pictures? How to hide?
Could someone help me out with the file path I should take from the file explorer?
And how do I hide certain pictures from the Gallery so that private pictures won't be seen by family members that just get a little too curious? Hopefully without using an App
Thanks.

You should find the pics from the Camera under the DCIM folder.
Full path would be
/sdcard/DCIM/Camera
I am not aware of how you can hide the pics from being shown in the gallery without using an App. From what I understand, no matter where you put your Pics on the phone, Gallery app picks them up.
/mnt/sdcard/DCIM/Camera
I haven't tried it, but apparently renaming folders with a period "." At the beginning denotes it as hidden. This would keep gallery type apps from finding and displaying any pics within. I think single files are specified hidden the same way. You probably would want to ensure your file manager is set to show hidden files/folders first, and you might want to create a new folder for your hidden stuff, as I'd guess your camera app will create a new folder from scratch if you rename the one it's using.
There are apps, but from what I've read, they just do the file/folder renaming with a period at the beginning. Just google "Android hide pictures".
Yes, renaming folders to begin with a period makes them hidden, but I tried that and they still show up in my "Gallery" app. Has anyone actually successfully used this procedure?
Try with put .nomedia in front of the folder wanna hide and it wont show up.

[Q] Database changed or Memory Unavailable Error in Album

Hi -
I had updated my XZ1 to 4.4.2. In the Album, there is an option Faces (which detects the faces) and asks to add names. So when I try to add name I get the message "Database Changed or Memory unavailable". The other problem I am facing is that my Camera storage was earlier on SD card. I still can see the photos on SD card thru the File Commander. The Album is not showing any of those photos but it shows the album art from my media folder. I am thinking both are connected in the sense that it has the cache of faces somewhere (I cleared data and cache multiple times) but it is not recognising the actual photo database for some reason so it is not able to write the name information (When I select the name option) to the actual photos.
Any suggestions..
I got it myself. Copy the photos some where else, then delete the DCIM folder. Now take one photo and you will see the DCIM folder again. Copy your old stuff back into that folder. You now have everything back.

[Q] Location of camera thumbnails

Somehow I messed up setting up my wife's new Moto X. In the past I had some tasker tasks to transfer all the photos off our phones and onto our NAS every night. In setting up the task on her new phone I deleted a slew of pictures. I know the original photos are gone and I'll face the music on that one. However, if I go to camera and swipe to the left I can scroll through all the photos. I can't email or share any because the file is gone, but if I can see the photos there must be a low res image someplace on the phone still. Anyone know how to access these and possibly get me out of the doghouse? They're not in the DCIM folder at all. I poked around in the Android/Data folder a bit, but did not find them.
On the same note, is there a way to clean these out over time? Seems to me if I have a thumbnail of every photo ever taken it would eventually fill up the storage.
Thanks
Get an app like astro file manager, or root Explorer and go to storage then DCIM and your thumbnail pics should be there.

Those are probably all cached. As for recovering them, I'm sure you can find them in the cache -- I don't know where they'd be saved (I believe there is a /cache partition but then there's also the possibility that the gallery caches those previews somewhere in /data/). It may be easier to to screen shot the ones you want.
EDIT: see above post - that's probably what you want
As for the cache growing, I'd imaging that the gallery app has some sort of maintenance. But there is always the option of using apps (I have SD Maid, personally) and/or periodically clearing the cache partition via a custom recovery
Thanks all. This was good info also. I ended up finding the files on my NAS which leads me to a whole other question which I will post seperately from this as it only related by symptoms.

Missing "Others" album in gallery.

So this issue has persisted for a few weeks now and I'm not sure how to resolve it, short of doing a full factory restore (which I consider last resort, but I'll probably do this over Xmas if I don't resolve it soon).
The issue : Gallery app seems to have "lost" a whole load of my images.
I can see photos/videos I've taken, screenshots/recordings and my Download folder, but all "other" folders are gone.
I had this problem before and I managed to fix it by removing a .nomedia file which was in the same folder as a whole load of images that the Gallery app decided to ignore. The .nomedia file isn't there now.
If I use a file exploring app I can see all my images in various folders on my phone (images saved from reddit/VSCO/facebook etc). Other apps such as Google Photos can see all my images. If I go to share an image from the Facebook app then I can see all my images (although they are always mixed up and not sorted by date/name or anything like that. also very frustrating) so I know 100% that all my images are there, but the stock Gallery app has decided to ignore them.
It's not like the problem is confined to one folder and sub folders either as I'm missing my "reddit_sync" and "prisma" folders which are located EVA-L09\Internal storage\Pictures but the "Screenshot" folder saved in that location is accessible in the Gallery app. Same with EVA-L09\Internal storage\DCIM: \Camera\ is accessible as I can see all the photos and videos I've shot with the phone but the folders \Facebook\ and \Photoscan\ are not showing up at all in Gallery.
If I long press a folder (i.e Download) in the Gallery app from my phone and select "Add to Others" then the folder just disappears. The "Others" folder has totally gone.
Things I've tried
Settings > Apps > Gallery > Storage > Clear Data and Clear Cache : This restores any folders that I've put in "others" but "others" is still missing
Created a new folder and cut and pasted images into this folder on the phone. Reboot phone to see if Gallery now sees images. It doesn't
Moved a whole load of images off my phone as I thought maybe I had too many images stored on it or something. Made no difference.
Searched for all .nomedia files on the phone. None of which were stored in any of the effected folders.
Checked to make sure there's no folders selected in "Hide Albums" from the Gallery.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have a feeling I may just need to clear the data/cache on some other app or something, but I don't want to start dropping mini-nukes on apps in the hope that I get a direct hit on the one thing that's causing "Others" to disappear.
Thanks in advance.
Did you try settings>apps>media storage>storage and clear data for this? I guess this will solve your issue
Edit: probably you need to either reboot afterwards or wait some minutes for the media library to be rebuilt.

Haha that did it! Thanks so much, it's been driving me mad!
Just FYI I didn't have to reboot, the library started to rebuild almost instantly after opening up the Gallery app..
For anyone else who has this problem and has stumbled across this post: When in Settings > Apps make sure you select "Show System Processes" from the menu. I couldn't find Media Storage until I had done that.
Thanks again, FadeFX
Sry, forgot to mention that...

I've been here so many times, hoping I must of done something wrong but I followed it right, I've cleared the date enough to lose count hoping that the albums that I put in "others" would show up, even restarting my phone after I've cleared it, they still don't show up at all.. and can't move them to another gallery folder on "files" due to it.
Albums don't show in photos
All albums appear correctly in albums tab, but the photos tab (where all pictures are shown) only includes camera photo and video and screenshot albums, tried the solutions above didn't work

I have a Huawei Nova and 4 days after transferring videos from my PC to phone , discovered that they were ''gone''. Inspired by your suggestions , I tried: Settings, then Apps, then Gallery, then Storage, then clean data ....rebooted and videos ......are back.
Very much wonder if this issue wil come back in the future or is this a permanent ''cure''.:fingers-crossed:
Thanks a million for your suggestions
