I have Lumia 520, with "soon to be broken" power buttton. Is there a way to turn it off without using power button ? by some kind of app perhaps ? I can turn it on by plug it in to usb cable and can reboot it by using quick tiles app. Only shutdown is missing.
Any suggestion ?

Wow, you are absolutely right. How comes I didn't come with that idea. But wait... I did. And while you are at it, Why don't you suggest pulling out the battery -_-
I need something like this :

But instead Reboot Now, Perhaps Shutdown Now ?

Cool your attitude, it's not gonna help. If you have a faulty unit, why not seek replacement or repairs?
I think tier3 apps can't shutdown the phone. There may be something useful in Nokia Care Suit, as it has the ability to put phone into various modes and such, maybe there's a way to shutdown the phone as well. Let me check...
EDIT: Yes, there's an option to shut down the device. However, because it's charging it'll want to turn back on, so you'll have to unplug the USB cable as soon as the display goes dark.
Which part of the power button is "soon to be broken"? If it is the part on the body of the phone, that's no good. Is it just the shell?

Okay, good suggestion. But it doesn't exacly what I need because it requires me to plugin my phone to pc just to shut it down. The application I mentioned before able to perform restart, and there is some application here on XDA for shutdown too (but for WP7). If a tier 3 application can do restart, why it can't do a shutdown ? How about native toast launcher, is there some kind of code I need to put there so "the swipe down to shutdown" appear on my phone ?

It is the body, not just the shell.
Apps aren't actually supposed to be able to do shutdown, I think... there are OEM drivers that support it, but there's no public API for it and it *should* require capabilities not available to third-party devs. There's a capability that an app can have to add it, but it's not even available to OEM apps...

As I said, NCS is your best option. But the phone is really useless without a working power button, so as I said, seek replacement/repairs.
If the 520 is just like the 521 the button should be attached to the shell. Just buy a new shell.

Okay so my power button just randomly stopped working after some random time. it doesnt work ANYWHERE. to lock my screen, to unlcok my screen, in recovery mode i cant press anything cuase it doesnt WORK. i no its a hardware issue becuase of this. i did google this but found nothing. what can i do to fix it.
i tried a battery pull and putting it back and going to recovery to factory reset but as soon as i put my battery in my phone starts up. i can enter recovery but the power button doesnt work so i cant press anything.
my warranty is over by a long shot ( had it since it released) so cant return it.
any help would be appreciated. all i need is a way to turn my phone on and off nothing about the recovery and stuff. but if you do find someting for it that would be even more amazing.
and has this happened to anyone else, just wondering is all if this is common or rare.
thnx in advance.
it has happened to many captivates. search 'captivate power button' on xda.
What ROM are you running on your phone?
Answer to that question has a lot to do with your next steps for software workaround.
One approach; you could read up on ways to clean the power button and see if that works. Or send it off to mobiletechvideos.com and he will fix it for a reasonable fee.

i am running Aocp 5 android 4.2.1
hve been running it for a few weeks now and no problem till now
Okay, start by seeing if you can clean the power button, that may fix it for now. Again, search 'captivate power button' to find some threads about ways to clean it.
With the ROM you are running, I believe you have a version of CWM that allows to use the Cappy's dedicated menu keys, menu, home, back and search, to navigate and select recovery items.
Assuming your power key is stuck on, remove the battery, hold the up and down volume buttons and reinsert the battery to get into recovery. This will allow you to test keys, wipe, and any other function in CWM.
With the phone on and fully booted into JB, go find volume rocker wake in the system setting options and make sure it is active. Hitting the up/down key will wake the screen when it sleeps. Add the sleep/lock toggle to your notification bar menu and you have a way to instantly lock the screen without the power key.
If you still have a bad power button stuck in on position, then you will need to take out the battery to turn it off.
Hope this helps.

This is happening because your power button is stuck in the on position. Did you try to clean it as suggested earlier.
BWolf56, I'm not aware of an app or ROM that completely prevents power up on insertion of battery when the power button is stuck on. If there is such an app, I'd like to hear about it. I think maybe the power switch goes to the broadcom power management chip, so I don't understand how the app could work unless the phone never came on at all. SOD symptoms would be the result.

I had a very similar problem with my Epic 4G Touch (Sprint S2) - my phone would randomly reboot, and it kept getting worse and worse. Thought it was the ROM, the overclock, etc. I flashed back to (almost) stock, went back to original clock speeds. Eventually, I noticed that even brushing past the power button would wake the screen, and about 10 seconds later the phone would reboot.
Long story short, I bought a replacement power switch, soldered it in place, and have had zero problems since!
Several eBay sellers offer the switch you'll need.
(They don't include the skills needed to solder it in place. It's a tiny switch - about 4mm x 2mm x 1.5mm, and you'll need a good quality fine-tipped soldering iron and a steady hand. Do you have a friend who's good at soldering?)

Hello,
Something happened with my Samsung Exhibit II phone after installing new ROM from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2185107
First, the installation went OK and the phone booted in the new environment. But since Google Apps were missing I rebooted my phone again into recovery mode and installed Google Apps and also SwapSD. Then I selected "restart phone" and after that I cannot turn my phone on. It looks like it is dead. The battery was OK (charged in full). So, the phone does not react to pressing any buttons at all. Is it familiar situation? Is there anything to do?

Didn't help. I removed a battery for 10 minutes, put it back, pressed "Volume Up + power" and nothing happened.
I am wondering if it is possible that installing a wrong apps (like SwapSd or Gapps) could kill a phone?
Even when I plug the charger in the phone, I don't see that the phone is charging. Usually, the battery icon would appear with percentage of charge. Now, nothing is happening.

Try pressing the power button, hold it down while holding the volume down button. Hopefully that will get you into download mode so you can try ODIN to reflash your ROM and/or recovery. If you get nothing while trying to do that, than yeah, I'd say your device is toast.

No, brick yes but kill the phone no. Guess the hardware just gave you the old proverbial middle finger looks like. On the bright side you now have a reason to get something better.
Yeah so here's the thing. I put Cyanogen Mod 11 on my device a few weeks ago, used CWM. And it worked perfectly normal except for 2-3 restarts but that's minor. Anyway, today I was using it normally as usually, and when I locked it, it wouldn't turn back on(even though it was on charger). The back button and the options button were glowing, but Home and Power button didn't do anything, just black screen. I put the battery out and back in, removed it from charger and I tried turning it on, but nothing. Just nothing, no vibration, no logo, no nothing. It was just a black screen. I don't know why and what happened here but if you guys could help I'll appreciate it.

If there is no sign of life between those two events, then i would have to conclude it being an error on hardware level...

The battery might be the cause. Try physically checking the battery for bulges and heat (hot to the touch). The last-mentioned can be tested by 'charging' the battery for a period of time. In other words: try replacing the battery.

Yes, the first thing you might do in such situations is to take it back to your carriers store and play dumb with "i dont know what happened, but my phone wont turn on anymore" etc. Most carriers dont have time to deal with such issues and just give you a new phone if youre within the warranty period. However if theyre wise to your act, youll have to try another store to get it fixed, if theyre willing to try or able at all. Bricking a phone is pretty rare, though.

Today, I woke up, and noticed that my Moto G 2nd Gen is died.
Honestly.. i don't understood what happened exactly. My phone was absolutely clean, no rom, no hacks, no strange apps, NOTHING!
Absolutely genuine and with just a few (famous) apps, like Tapatalk, Skype, Facebook etc..
Someone maybe knows what problem is it? Hope to receive help..
THANK YOU.

You could try another cord and/or charger if you have any laying about. That would be on the assumption that it ran down overnight. BTW, if it is completely dead, it may take a little before you get any indication of charging.
have seen it happen several times.
This fixes most of the time
In the unlikely event that your device becomes unresponsive, frozen, blank or black screen, or will not respond to the power button, you can perform a force restart or reboot on the device by following the steps below.
Press and hold the Power button for 7 - 10 seconds, the device will restart and go through the boot-up sequence.
Notes:
The forced restart or reboot will not delete any Data on your phone.
If completing the 7-10 second Reset does not recover normal functionality of the device, then press and hold the Power Button for a full 120 seconds while connected to a charger.

Yep!!! My Pc installed some drivers with success, but I can't see the storage in "My PC" section of Windows. (the led turns on also in this case for 10/20 secs).
But I tried to press the power button, also in combination with VOL DOWN, and it still doesn't make any effect.

You officially have a paper-weight now. Does anyone know if there is still a "USB JIG" option for the Note8 and the USB Type-C port?

yes and dont know what to because my screen is a little bit broken and they will charged me new screen for power button
The only way to go would be to change the motherboard, sorry, I always install some apps to reduce the use of the power button since day one, I use gravity screen to awake the screen, and invisible widgets to turn it off, and shortcutter to make a tile to call the power menu, so, I only use the power button to ACTUALLY power the device ON

Here it was, I thought I was being conservative by using fingerprint unlock to save a few presses on my power button.
I wonder if the OP has a saved alarm set to go off at a specific time. I then forgot that the alarm clock doesn't work when the phone is off.

In fact I even try to save presses on volume buttons via virtual button bar

^^^That is taking it too far now. I assume you use wireless charging to save your USB port, and SSH to access your phone remotely, to save your phone from screen burn-in?
Edit: then there is bluetooth speakers / headphones to save the built in speaker.
Hahahaha! Only the wireless charging part too!
i got mine to turn on by doing the downloazd mode, then plug in to a copmputer. it turns on and starts in download or upload or recovery mode, but i cant get it to restart and boot
