[Q] Bricked i9000? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there!
Bit of a problem with my Galaxy S. Had Darky's Rom 9.4, but I wanted update to 11. Somehow everything didn't work as intended, after wiping cache and dalvik-cache the phone didn't start at all. Just Samsung screen when booting, after 2 hours I called it a brick.
So I unbricked it by installing stock rom. Well, at least I can make calls and send sms. But there is some issues:
1. Volume buttons and home buttons doesn't work.
2. Impossible to charge the phone. If I insert charger, I cannot even boot it. If phone is turned on and I put charger in, 5 seconds and it will turn off.
Of course, I can't get into recovery mode, although CMrecovery is in there. It's just because of the button mappings which is screwed up somehow. Flashing stock firmware doesn't work either, because phone will crash after inserting the USB-cable. Downloadmode is accessible, but crashing in 5 seconds.
Bit of stuck here. I know, RTFM when flashing but too late for now. Is there any way to get full wipe? Scripts or something? Apps?
...oh wow.. it was my friend who flashed it with "stock" firmware, but it says i897 in about phone.. No wonder why nothing works.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

so you got a captivate ROM on an i9000? ,
try
1. Remove the battery, external SD card and SIM card.
2. Press power button without battery for 20 seconds.
3. Open odin3 with i9000 gingerbread JVU Stock ROM selected, Follow

Hi xsenman,
Thanks for reply. Don't know what you mean captivate but yeah, it's incorrect ROM and probably kernel as well, but it's working somehow.
Will have a look on those instructions you provided. However, I managed to get into recovery mode. In i897 it's both volume buttons and power. So the volume buttons actually work. However, I cannot choose wipe because they are not working in recovery mode. :silly:
I'm able to have internet connection, so maybe I'll try with Quick Boot or Hot Boot.

[Q] N1 hangs during flash, boots only to fastboot (sometimes), bricked or not ?

Ok, I just figure having a thread about this might help since I haven't found any similar problem to mine.
I was using Cyanogen RC2, out of the blue the phone did not boot (stuck at the logo screen). I did manage to get to fastboot and from then on this happens:
It does not power up in any way most of the times (power + volume down, power or power + trackball). I'm trying to see the causes of this but fail to do so. Leaving the battery out for days doesn't solve it. It just sometimes boots in fastboot or bootloader.
In this not powering up state, if I charge it to the wall or USB cable, it charges. If I push any combination of powering up buttons in this state, the charge led goes off and stays off until I remove the battery and cable.
When I get lucky and power it up in fastboot, I can try flashing. It hangs 90% of the time during various states, most of the time at the begining. This means I see the green progress bar empty or in progress.
I'm trying now to flash the stock OS (boot, recovery, system and userdata). The radio is FRF 50, 4.06.00.12_7, hboot is the original, 0.33.2012.
I managed to flash different version of recovery.img (stock, RA, cyanogen) but booting in recovery mode from hboot menu just restarts the phone.
When fastboot works and the phone hangs during the flash process, I have to remove the cable and battery and start over.
I did manage to flash a system.img once, don't remember what version, but that did not get me nowhere (might not have matched my radio).
Any ideas are welcome, like using the SD card somehow instead of fastboot over usb.
PASSIMG.zip
You can try the passimg method-
1. download a stock image and rename it PASSIMG.zip
2. Place the file on the root of your sd
3. Power off your phone, then turn it on by holding VolDown and pressing Power
*It will start up in HBOOT mode and will prompt you to flash the PASSIMG.zip update

I've read about this, that's what I plan to try next time when I manage to start the phone. Do you know if this works automatically when powering the phone or it expects the recovery mode (choosing Recovery from the boot menu) to work (because it doesn't)?
No it reads the img with out needing to be in recovery it will up date in the bootloader
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Some progress on the not booting sometimes, if I insist, it will boot after 4-5 battery pullouts.
I tried 2 versions of PASSIMG.zip from shipped-roms
PASSIMG_Passion_Google_WWE_1.11.1700.1_EPE76_release_signed.zip PASSIMG_Passion_Google_WWE_1.14.1700.1_EPF30_release_signed.zip
No luck, the flashing hangs at the end as shown here:

Hey all. As i read through thee forums i see that people are having difficulties with the whole download mode, and recovery mode. I have found that its easier to HOLD THE VOLUME DOWN button for a good 4-7 seconds at the Vibrant splash screen. It always works, gets me right there. Anyways, here is a Visual Guide i made for both.

Your phone is not hardware locked, as many others are. Most of the complaints come from our not-as-smart brethern (no offense) that do not realize their phones are hardware-locked and simply think they are "doing it wrong"
I would run the .bat file associated with Unlocking Hardware locked phones. Just a suggestion.
Best way to get into download mode.
I messed up my phone after restoring a rooted-2.1-stock nand backup while using a froyo build. The phone booted up with constant crashes, and would not go into recovery. I should of read the froyo threads prior to doing that, I was just impatient.
I'm not taking credit for this, but this trick was not posted enough:
DOWNLOAD MODE
------------------
1. Turn off phone (if you cant, take out battery, put it back in.)
2. Plug in USB cable to pc, but not the phone just yet.
3. Hold the phone while holding down the both Volume Up and Volume Down buttons (the phone should not turn on).
4. Plug the USB cable into the phone (this will trigger the phone to turn on).
If you follow those exact steps, Download Mode should be displayed on the phone.

Hate to ask such a basic question but are you definitely holding the *down* volume and power key? I think I had something similar happen to me once (and only once) but I think I'd been holding the up volume instead of the down and thought that must have caused it...
Yes danny, im sure im holding the volume down, no matter what I do , the phone would boot to this only screen
Have you tried ADB?
Have you tried booting in the hboot via fastboot?
yes did try ADB, but computer won't recognize the phone
Looks like the recovery image on your device does not exist or is corrupted. Install the recovery image (ClockWorkMod) via the bootloader or via fastboot. Both are easy methods. Just search for the installation process in the forums.
I'm really sorry nobody with a bit more experience has managed to find anything much to suggest so far, I really feel for you! Googling around a bit I found this for another HTC phone - might be worth trying.
Pull the battery, hold down the volume up key and stick the battery back in and press the power button keeping the volume up held down. After that (apparently that does a different type of boot again), pull the battery once more, this time hold down the volume down button and stick the battery back in. Hit the power still holding the power down and see if that lets you back to recovery...
It's not much but better than nothing ands worth a try. The other site it was mentioned on it worked for getting back to the recovery menu but it was a different device...
Thank you danny for mentioning this, i already tried that too, i think the device is bricked , i am going to try a box one of my friends has, then ill post what will happen here..
thank you again for all who shared their knowledge
That must be a new method of bricking a device. Never heard anything similar. One should think twice before updating YouTube lol
Sent from my Incredible S using XDA
can you try one more thing?
- Get a ROM with the recovery image contained in the zip file. The name should be recovery.img. If not get a recovery image for IncS and copy it over into the ROM's zip file
- Then rename the ROM zip file to update.zip and put it on the SD card
- Then boot the phone using the Vol Down+Power button to go into HBOOT
See if HBOOT will detect this update.zip file and automatically flash the ROM.
Nothing but that screen i am able to get, no hboot no recovery, i used the ORT box, to fix the hboot, and now working like charm
I've never encounter a situation where after youtube.apk update you need a reboot..
Are you sure it was 'just' the youtube you changed. Also was it offical via Playstore?

Turn off phone by pulling off the battery and place it back in. While the phone is off, press Volume Up + Home Button + Power Button to enter recovery mode. In recovery, navigate using volume buttons and select wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache and try to install another rom from there. If it doesn't work for you, enter download mode on your device (Volume down+home button+power button) and reflash the firmware using odin. Happened several times to me, hoped I helped

Gear without recovery

Welcome!
Sorry for my english. So many months ago i update my Gear software with Odin with working recovery. This is working well but i checked restart gear in odin. Yes i know this is my fault... So Odin is update my software and restart without recovery update. Now i can't back to recovery with long press power button. I only see restart... and black screen and... restart... and black screen. So no recovery, no odin, no cydia impactor... no connect to sdb.
Please help!
Have you tried reflashing twrp recovery with Odin?

To reflash need recovery mode. Or no? In Odin when i plug the gear i no see green box. Only a text message. Connected. But this is not enught. USB debug mode on.
Does it still have the original operating system on it? Does it boot properly? If it does is it running tizen or android?

Yes it's working on custom Tizen rom. When i install this i messed up recovery i should think. My goal is to pair with my THL T6 Pro but Gear manager not working on it. I't stuck at white pair screen. Just wait...and wait... I try many solution. without success.
So now the only way to bring back to life is this: http://blog.laptopmag.com/how-to-root-galaxy-gear
But i unable to use this without odin. This is a story
What happens when you hold the power button down and it reboots? Are you pressing the power button lots of times?

Oh i forgot pressing power button many times. Now i see a menu with options. Thanks
I had the same problem. Im glad it was answered. SO after entering the menu, how does the device select that option.
From memory...... Pressing it moves the cursor long press selects whatever it's on.

I try this procedure now: http://blog.laptopmag.com/how-to-root-galaxy-gear
I'm on Tizen.
Set USB Debug on. Im on point 12. Open Cydia Impactor and try to send command but i see an error: No device
It is working many months later when i'm on Android. So the question is i downgrade to Android ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53237481&postcount=1 ) and after open Cydia Impactor and send su command?
Have you downgrade to android? You'd need to do that first. If you're on android you can check the connection using adb.
