Are you rooted now? If you are rooted, as long as you haven't changed any of the system files you can install the .zip through the stock recovery and you're good to go (you don't lose root).
If you aren't rooted, just install the .zip through the stock recovery and then flash TWRP recovery and root.
Assuming you have an unlocked bootloader, flashed TWRP and rooted (but no other changes, no VZWentitlement hacks, delete/removing/renaming any apps from /system/app or /system/priv-app, no Xposed Installer and modules installed, etc...).
Download the 4.4.2 update .zip to your phone.
Flash the stock recovery back to your phone.
Boot to recovery and install the .zip you downloaded.
Done.
You'll need to find the .zip and download it.
You'll need to know how to flash the stock recovery back and have it downloaded so you can flash it
You'll need to know how to use the stock recovery (button combos to boot to recovery and enter recovery)

Ah, I had forgotten about having to use the stock recovery to flash. When I last updated, I dirty flashed a TWRP-able image. Might wait for someone to make one for maximum laziness
Edit the updater-script and remove the device check for ghost in the OTA zip that's posted. Then you can flash it in CWM or TWRP as long as /system is stock.

So I updated to all stock 4.3 GE but can't flash the needed superuser zip. Do I need to flash a custom recovery than root and after that flash stock recovery back? Is there any way to root with stock recovery directly?

Yes, you need custom recovery for root. No need to change recovery back until the next update is due at which time I believe you will have to unroot and go back to completely stock which can be done by running the RUU again.

I believe you would need to flash CWM or TWRP then flash the superuser.zip then flash back the stock recovery afterwards.

thanks. confirmed latest TWRP working on 4.3 and flashed supersu. had to install an update from the play store. it was without drama.

I've finally received 4.4.4 notification to update my German Moto x!!
I'd like to know one thing before I proceed.. If I update, will I have to root again the phone?
My phone has unlocked bootloader so there is no problem, but right now I'm on holiday and I don't have a pc to root it again..

I've read some other user just flashed the stock recovery, installed the ota and flashed back twrp recovery..
Others instead use fwz method
I think I'll wait until I'm home just to be sure I need my phone during the holidays!

Hi, i was wondering the same thing. Is there a method for someone to create an update for rooted phones?

Guys, before anyone gets in trouble....there is no FXZ for the german (or any asia/european) Moto X's yet.
The only one released is the Verizon one....so DON'T flash the verizon FXZ.
You need to flash stock recovery back, and if the phone STILL won't take the OTA, also use "mfastboot" to flash system.img from the 4.4.2 FXZ (which IS released for the european/asia models). Afterwards, the OTA should install without fail.
You WILL need to re-flash TWRP no matter which method you use. You will also need to re-root IF you flash the system.img from the 4.4.2 SBF in order to be able to accept the OTA (you only flash system.img from 4.4.2 if the OTA fails after you have flashed stock recovery - it normally means you have modified /system in some way, and restoring the full system.img fixes this issue).
Good Luck - Remember: Don't flash the Verizon 4.4.4 FXZ to your non-Verizon phone. Not a good idea...
If your phone doesn't vary from Stock but rooted, you can get away with flashing stock recovery back on there and taking the OTA. (OTA wont install via custom recovery like TWRP, CWM, etc). And if that is the case, you will retain root. You can optionally flash TWRP back on there.
If you have Xposed installed, it will need to be disabled or removed for the OTA install to work.
It is when you mess with stock files in /System or other folders on the phone.. i.e. remove, rename, etc. files from them, that you may also need to flash system.img and possibly other parts. This is due to verification checks in the OTA zip itself. If you have to flash those parts, you will have to re-root. Not an issue if you have an unlocked bootloader.

IF you do not vary too much from Stock (i.e. didn't remove, rename or replace any "stock" files on your phone), then yes.
Oh, for Xposed, there is a disabler ZIP you can flash from custom recovery located in /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/de.robv.android.xposed.installer (or /SdCard/Android/data/de.robv.android.xposed.installer ) instead of removing it, as sometimes removing it doesn't undo all the changes.

OTA info can be found in the FAQ sticky under Q7

as for stock recovery, the easiest (since you have the file already) is to extract from within the OTA.zip.... inside the OTA.zip is a "firmware.zip" inside that, you can find the stock recovery. (recovery.img)

Ok I can extract recovery.img and I can flash recovery.
But after that, can I install OTA update? (ROM is still stock, only Exposed module installed, and superSU)
All options on phone is unlocked (bootloader unlocked, s-off, rooted..)
And after that I can flash my old recovery TWP?
And I guess, I must install superSU again?

xposed will not allow the OTA to work, xposed changes stuff in the system partition
yes, you will likely loose root, but that (and twrp) can be easily reflashed

Doesn't work, because I was deleted some stock default apps...
Anayway I restored previous backup and sucesfully update to 5.02
I just flashed my way up to M from the Fi-specific L, using the M image from the developers site. I was rooted, but using stock recovery. Everything went fine. So I'm stock, unrooted on M now.
Now I want to root again, (keeping stock recovery), and before I do, I want to be sure Chainfire's original N6 root for L, is still going to work right on M?

As far as I am aware, you need to flash a custom kernel that allows rooting.
I guess you could use flashify to flash a custom kernel and SuperSU v2.49?
You cannot flash a custom kernel using flashify if you haven't got root. You could extract the image and flash the boot.img and fastboot flash it, but still you'd need to get root.
He should just flash a custom recovery. There is no reason to keep the stock recovery. Rooted users really need the support that a custom recovery offers.
Flash you TWRP with fastboot flash recovery twrp.img then boot into recovery from bootloader menu. copy UPDATE-SuperSU 2.50beta and flash .zip like normal... you have root
So I connected my LG-H811 running stock ROM 20p to my PC successfully and ran adb and fastboot to transfer twrp and supersu over to the phone internal drive. So far so good. I couldn't get twrp to flash properly, so I simply did a temporary boot and got twrp to run without flashing it as a recovery. Then I used twrp to flash supersu (SuperSU-v1.94.zip). The problem is that when I try to reboot, it says the superSU binary is not installed. So I tried newer versions of supersu (SuperSU-v2.76-20160630161323.zip and SuperSU-v2.48.zip). Each time with these newer versions it soft bricked the phone again and required a full stock ROM restore. Specifically, it hangs either on the black LG screen or the white T-mobile screen, while the blue LED flashes on and off every few seconds. To unbrick it each time, I did a restore with stock ROM H811V20p_00_0913.kdz with LGUP. That got it working again with stock ROM, but no root. There must be a way to get superSU to install on 20p (and even get the twrp recovery to flash). I unlocked the bootloader, and it seems to load, so apparently that's not the issue. Thanks.

have twrp .img in sd card and install click on image tab.. then select recovery and flash it.
once it flashes i just flash superSU and get root.

The first time with SuperSU v1.94 newly installed, the phone rebooted normally, and the superSU app showed up, but it didn't work because it said there was no binary installed. The newer versions of superSU simply soft-bricked the phone. So I need a way to get superSU to work and not soft-brick the phone. Is there a preferred version of superSU for LG-H811 ROM 20p, or some obscure setting that makes it work?

Thanks -- that's the the exact same version of superSU I used earlier (I even ran a diff, and the files are identical). After I flashed this version of superSU on the p20 stock ROM with twrp, it soft-bricked my phone. By that I mean it got to the boot page, and the blue LED pulsed on and off every few seconds, and it never got beyond that. When I flashed superSU v1.94, at least it booted afterward, but when I opened the superSU app, it didn't even give me the option to update binaries -- it just said the binary isn't installed, and so superSU can't run, it exited.
Maybe I'll try flashing an earlier stock ROM and see if that allows superSU to flash and run properly -- not sure which ones are compatible given the anti-rollback versioning.

try a custom kernel it has superSU installed.. i say imperium kernel.
try first the custom kernel.. if not you can only downgrade to 20o. no lower or youll hard brick phone.

Imperium_Kernel_G4_H811_v4.8a.zip
Then:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-h811.img
Then in TWRP, flash the imperium kernel. After that everything worked with root, though I still can’t get the twrp recovery to flash properly. Having root is good enough for now though.

Did "fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-h811.img" work?
What version of SuperSu did you install? I am planning on using "SR1-SuperSU-v2.78-SR1-20160915123031.zip"

Yes, fastboot boot from the twrp image was kind of a hack, but it worked. As for SuperSU, I tried v1.94 and SuperSU-v2.76-20160630161323.zip. Both soft-bricked the phone. Maybe the newest SuperSU will work, but I wouldn't count on it given that several previous versions didn't.

I need to flash twrp and root from 20p also. One question to clarify exactly what you did,
Did you originally try flashing TWRP from TWRP? You said you flashed root from TWRP but I want to verify if you tried flashing TWRP from TWRP like:

then in TWRP:

Just to be totally clear doing > fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-h811.img leaves your stock recovery intact and just loads TWRP temporarily.
Or did you actually flash TWRP from TWRP and it didn't flash properly?

Yes, just loads TWRP temporarily. Later I installed some apps that flashed the recovery successfully, either rashr or flashify (I don't remember which)
I hope you have all the files and pc is reading your phone in adb.
Keep the downloaded twrp file in your adb folder with dwonloaded name (Ex:1234twrp.img)
Copy the file and keep in phone internal storage with names recovery.img
adb reboot bootloader (wait for phone to boot in bootloader ofcourse)
fastboot boot 1234twrp.img (whatever your twrp img file name would be)
Now you are in twrp recovery page in the phone.
Tap Install > Images (bottom right) > select recovery.img >
Now you are in next screen where options to slect recovery or boot
Tap recovery and swipe you will see [image flash complete]
Now twrp is permeant. You can restart in recovery without PC. (Tested)
I have flashed more than 6 methods to install supersu. Keep trying and reply.
