4.4.2 and ART - Moto X Q&A

I have read so many reports saying that after upgrading to 4.4.2 with ART option, the battery life gets worse. Is it the case for you?
I am with ATT...so still in the waiting room

Just give it a try, you can always revert back to Dalvik.

Decrypt or wait?

Hey everyone,
So I don't normally post, I usually just read, but wanted to ask this question/poll to current N6 users. I'm about to get my N6 on Wed (YA! ) and wanted to know, should I run decryption as soon as I get my device or give it some time (month or so) to wait for an update?
Battery life and performance are concerns for me and I know the device has the hardware to make it happen.
Thanks for any response.
Might as well decrypt as soon as you get it. No point in waiting, as it will only increase battery life and performance.

Unlock boot, decrypt, root, install greenify.
I managed 7hrs 8 minutes sot yesterday. Up from 3.5 my second cycle before doing the above mentioned. Helps immensely.
Noticeable responsiveness improvement and remarkably better battery.
This is my experience.

Quick question..
Will doing any of that prevent OTA updates from Google?

Short answer: probably. But that's the only way to drop the encryption for the time being.

Root will. OTAs that overwrite boot.img will re-encrypt. At least that is the theory, as it hasn't happened yet.
It would be really good to hear from Google as to whether or not they are working on addressing this issue. I read many of the popular tech sites but haven't even seen one mention that they reached out to Google for comment on this. I'm going to give this a week or two to see if we get a response from Google or not. Even with encryption, battery is getting me through a day and performance is much faster than I'm used to. Still loving the experience, but the tech nerd in me is bothered by the fact that it can be even better without encryption.
I would also be curious to see if any of the tech sites that do a battery rundown test have redone the test with encryption off. It would be good to see some real metrics that measure the effect it has on battery.
If you wait it will require a complete factory reset of your data. That should help you decide.
I don't think reviewers are saying anything because it isn't an issue in every day use. I tried the phone both ways and couldn't tell a difference in how the phone felt. Only benchmarks really showed any difference. I don't think reviewers care much about benchmarks other than to run a few for the nerds among us.
So you didn't notice apps loading any faster? Particularly games or apps with a large footprint? To be honest, I want it for the battery life more than anything. If encryption is really being processed in the CPU, that is very inefficient and all those extra CPU cycles are wasting battery.
I noticed improvement in performance. Not a lot as the device is already lightning fast. I'd imagine the more user data there is to decrypt/encrypt the more noticeable the performance would be. But yes battery life seems to have improved immensely.
Thanks everyone for voting!
Just got my N6 (WHOA...this thing is a change from the N5) and Im going to go with decryption. Unlocking as I type... :highfive:

do you have something else except for greenify for battery increase? for greenify don't you have to install xposed which is not compatible(or fully) with lollipop(uses art) ?thanks

Xposed has an alpha that works on Lollipop, and I think there is a beta version of Greenify that has more features and works with the Lollipop version (the old one may work too).
Amplify is another one I have seen a few people mention in efforts to get better battery life.

Getting no OTA to 5 on my 4.4.4

That's the problem on my other grouper. Is this a normal behavior?
It seems the rollout was stopped for unknown reasons, we speculate severe performance issues. No word on when the OTA resumes.

I would say that's most likely accurate. You seriously don't want 5.0.0 on this thing. My parents just gave me their 2012 N7 to fix because after the 5.0.0 OTA, the performance is so bad it's unusable. I'm going to try 5.0.2, but I'm not optimistic that they've been able to fix the performance issues, and will probably end up putting it back to Kit Kat, or maybe even Jellybean since even Kit Kat seemed a little laggy.
I kind of expected to be a ton of people talking about the issues with 5.0.0 here, but I don't see much discussion going on.

Check the posts for 5.0.2. I myself can vouch they fixed the performance issues. I was on the 5.0 update and it was awful. I went right back to KK. I then waited to hear how the 5.0.2 update was and saw numerous posts from people who said it definitely fixed the performance issues. I can attest to that fact - so much better. Very close, if not at the performance of the KK build.
I would suggest you do a clean install. Basically, backup the device to a PC (the /sdcard stuff) and then wipe it clean - everything. Data, cache, dalvik and internal storage. Install from scratch and then start rebuilding from there with your apps.

[Q] Are Lollipop ROMs ready for primetime?

Hey all,
Last flashed on FireKat months ago and have been wanting to try out Lollipop but wasn't sure if it was ready yet. When I first used FireNote, mega was remarking that it would be a few months before KK was stable enough for everyday use.
Have you guys had good luck with custom Lollipop ROMs? Which ones are the "best" ones you'd recommend?
Sorta/not really. It's like smooth sailing except when you hit the new barrier reef. But it's pretty!
Latest problem is Viper4android can't possibly work until someone figures out how to enable SELinux Permissive mode. Then like something makes a noise or vibrates in a way you might have tamed with Xposed before. But there's no Xposed either. How do you fix it? You don't. I might just go back. Sucks either way for now.

How's battery life? Right now on firekat I'm losing 35% per hour during use and 3-5% per hour when the screen is off. Can't be worse than this.
Lack of viper and xposed aren't really deal breakers for me. Inconvenient, yes, but still usable.
Root WiFi hotspot still works I assume?

Yeah i figured that battery life was abnormal. Not sure how to troubleshoot it, though. When I go to look at battery stats (using GSam) to troubleshoot, it just shows that most of the battery is consumed by "Android System," followed closely by "Kernel (Android OS)." Battery life was pretty good when I first installed FK, but has gone down considerably since first install.
Any idea on how to further troubleshoot?

Not knowing how you flashed it. always odin back to nc2 then install ss and tr, Flash the rom. Never use battery saver. When using greenify make sure its uncheck in exposed. Don't forget to make a fresh backup of nc2 before flashing fk. But the new build v19n3 and v19n4 is running awesome. Great battery life. One thing I do is in tb is to change Google play services from system app to user app. Hope this helps. If you try this rom again and have problems jump over to the fk thread since this thread is Q&A on LP.

Yeah I installed FK according to all the instructions and it was fine at first. Battery life degraded over time, though. To give you an idea how long ago I installed FK, I have version 4 installed.
What I'm wondering is if i should install the newest FK or jump over to lollipop. Anyone have any experience with both? Curious to see all the new lollipop features and battery life can hardly get WORSE compared to what I have now.

Well I tried LP on a older Nexus 4 that I just tinker with I didn't like it. I put slimkat back on it. But the new fk builds is great. I'm not switching to LP unless Mega does a LP build for us. Like I said if you try the new builds just jump over on the threads if you have problems.
It looks like allianceROM is one of the more popular Lollipop ROMs. Anyone have any opinions on it vs firekat?
I think lollipop roms are awesome, very smooth. I did have better battery life with 4.3 then anyother

Any way to downgrade from 5.1 to 4.4.4?

Got my Droid Turbo recently and decided to upgrade to 5.1 to try it out a few days ago. I hate it-- performance/compatbility w/ apps is completely ruined and my battery drains faster. I also despise the UI of Lollipop.
Can't seem to figure out a way to get back to 4.4.4. Bootloader is locked, so I can't flash the factory 4.4.4 stock image.
Can't be done for now buddy. It is highly unlikely it ever will be.

I fooled around for a little bit and found out there's a Material Dark theme for the keyboard (along w/ holo white and holo blue), so my major UI complaint is gone (white keyboard). Only other complaint regarding UI is the fact that I have to swipe and then touch the top of the screen to get to my settings.
I read up for a little bit, people are saying that factory resetting/wiping after installing the OTA update fixes performance/battery issues. Gonna try it out, thank you for the response.

I should preface all my posts with: "this is just my thought process and not anything official / backed by research."
That said... 5.1 is very very new to the Turbo. So new, in fact that I highly doubt, boxed, in inventory, phones have been upgraded.
So lets say you have a warranty or insurance of some kind.. and your Turbo happens to... fall in a toilet.. run over by a garbage truck....eaten by a lion...
The replacement Turbo you would get, would, statistically, be running 4.4.4 and not 5.1
Yup.
It's funny how some people are dying to get 5.1 while others want to go back to 4.4.4
Regarding battery and performance, a lot of people have reported better battery life and performance after wiping cache, if not satisfied full wipe.
Regarding the rest, I agree with you, it takes a while to get used to, and without the ability to root and use nice customisation apps to tune it to the way you like it, this can be stressful. Despite that, soon enough you can get root on 5.1 and you should be able to tweak it using Xposed and the such.
I know exactly how you feel as I am currently on a 4.4.4 stock unrooted. Which sucks compared to my lovely rooted fully customised experience. I had to though to use my company corporate apps (MobileIron) which detects root and complains about almost everything unless stock. Stupid app. So for me I would swap my 4.4.4 unlocked with your 5.1 stock any time of the day because I can't modify it anyway.
Good luck mate. Try to calculate your risk, this is a pretty expensive device and I won't risk hard bricking it.
The 5.1 update I side-loaded doubled my battery life and makes it fly. Hasn't lagged one time. Using Nova Pro and DU Battery Saver. I'm a power user and it lasts all day and late into the morning.

Not trying to be all negative, but this isn't exactly correct. There is no guarantee 5.1 users will ever see root. With the Turbo soon(ish) to hit it's first birthday, (for what I've seen) developers tend to go for the latest/greatest/newest challenge (IE: the latest phone to tweak with). Everyday there is less and less appeal to root the Turbo as everyday there are less and less Turbo users. (upgrades and whatnot)

We knew this would happen when we choose the Turbo over the Moto X, the turbo has terrible support because it is not a mainstreamer. We have to live with the risks and work with the challenges. I am not considering root, but I am confident that's it is going to happen, the same problem was facing unlocking the droid turbo and rooting it, and even though it was very late but it did happen. It's only a matter of time.
I have learned my lesson from this and I am sticking with the more supported devices despite all the extras. Moto X 2015 is my next device if it ends up being half as decent as the rumours.
I never experienced battery drains before (Only when I overclocked) but either way I just use Greenify to manage battery life and trust me it works and if the bootloader is unlocked it may depend on the device your trying to downgrade. In my experience I tried to downgrade a S5 T-Mobile using Odin using official ROM from samsung and got the phone into a bootloop until I downloaded lollipop (Latest version) and it stopped but I hope you get a work around this.
Cheers!!

yes you can downgrade, only if you took the ota i might write a tutorial about it

Does something Special need to be done when going from LP to MM? (Battery issue)

What's up guys. So I had put MM on a friend's N6 for her so that she could enjoy the best of what android can offer (got her to sell her Iphone, Yessss)
Anyway... Now that I have a 64GB nexus 6 of my own and after many days of testing... I feel like something is wrong.
She is a pretty standard user, while I am a super heavy user... and neither of us can get past roughly 10 hours of total time, regardless of SOT. I've tried Chroma, Light, and Euphoria (MM builds) on both of our devices and the results are almost always the same. For her, the past week has been a max of 10 hours total time, but sometimes as little as 6 hours without use if not less, with less than 1 hour of SOT. Then on mine, which I've only had for 2 days mind you, the results are strangely similar, the best I got was 9 hours of total time with 3 hours SOT. While our results are somewhat different they both still... suck.
Is there some kind of magical nonsense I missed that must be preformed before moving to MM? Both devices were on LP to start with. I'm honestly just moving back to 5.1.1 for now (Mainly for xposed anyway) but...still I know that after reading so many good comments in threads that this cannot be some general "MM sucks" thing. It must be our devices, or the way I am modding them.
Basically, for both devices I did the following...
Unlock Bootloader
Flash TWRP, the one that was said to work on MM
Backed up Stock Rom
Flashed a custom ROM
...Is there something new that I am not aware of? I've tried to search a bit but I've honestly not sure what to search for exactly. I tried searching for firmware...but that didn't really seem conclusive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
battery life has nothing to do with you rooting/unlocking/flashing your phone. it all has to do with how you set up, which apps you install and use, how you use the device, and your signal quality. that said, if you keep your brightness high, you will get lowered battery life, no matter what.

right, but the fact that we both have different uses (mine being heavy hers being light) and use different apps...yet the results are similar?

no. if your phones have booted, and are running, you got everything. your battery life is what i have "normally" seen from average users that dont know much about keeping good battery life. i normally see anywhere from 5-6.5 hours sot, and minimally 20 hours total in battery life.

She uses facebook, I do not... But still ... this is crazy terrible battery life. I mean... I expected MM to be better, but at least be equivalent to LP. But this is just insane.
Alright! After reading and looking around more, I've found a post that stated "FOR LOLLIPOP ROM USERS IS NECESSARY START FROM ANDROID M FACTORY OR UPGRADE YOUR BOOTLOADER AND RADIO."
I tried searching for this but I'm not finding anything. I take it I just need to flash the stock factory image, but if one wanted just to upgrade, where are the Bootloader and Radio files?
I am downloading the factory image now and will report if this helps at all, perhaps this will help other users.
I found the best way to go was to flash the stock firmware and start from scratch. I simply did a clean install. My battery life has improved drastically from Lollipop.
