Black screen of death - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been getting the bsod at all different times the last couple of weeks and only removing the battery fixes it...... Has anyone else experience this? It's getting really frustrating..... I have unInstalled a bunch of apps thinking it was a recently installed app but it's still doing it! I am on mj5 rooted and have had the phone since October with no issues until just recently! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had a similar problem with an S4 (why I have a Note 3) where I started getting BSOD's until the screen went blank one day and didn't come back.
It turned out to be the screen and digitizer separating that was the cause of the problem.
I sent it into AT&T first under warranty only to have two replacement S4's die in a similar manner.
I'm not sure if this is your issue or not.
I have had zero problems with the Note 3.
Have you tried a factory reset or flashing back to stock?
Hope this helps.

Sounds like it is not waking from deep sleep... You may need to factory reset or do the MJ5 restore.

Well I spoke too sooon.... Happened again today.... But I'm starting to think it may be a Battery issue! I think it only does It with one of my two batteries. Both batteries are oem samsung and I have them marked so I will make a point to check which battery I'm using when it happens! So far it's looking like the battery that came with the phone is the issue but we will see!

My recommendation in cases like this (been flashing since i had my S2) is to always go back to stock following the restore thread as mentioned earlier. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2476353 Restore flash, root and back to your fav Rom shud take no more than 30 mins. Then restoring your apps from the playstore can be tedious but has always fixed errors originating from apps. Sometimes it is an app issue and doing a backed up app restore (ie. Titanium Backup) may simply reintroduce the problem. After all that I would start to look at hardware but I would exhaust all software troubleshooting first. Just my 2ยข... Hope this helps.

Just to give an update to my situation.... It has about 8 days running without the suspect battery and I have not had anymore issues! I replaced the battery with one from at&t oem of course. S if anyone else experience this try replacing the battery! I will call it fixed and only update here if the problem reoccurs.

[Q] Help! Random Reboots on New Note

Hi,
Got a Note in the UK just last week, brand new, and within two days I flashed it to the German stock ICS update. I can't say that I noticed issues in the first few days, but that could be because I didn't get a lot of time with it.
Since then, however, now that it is all set up and configured, I'm noticing random spontaneous reboots during sleep on the device, anything between every 2 to 6 hours, no warning, just the phone suddenly flashing into life with the model splash screen, followed by startup animation.
Reading around I've followed all kinds of anecdotal cures... I've removed Apex Launcher and Widget Locker, and returned to TWLauncher and stock dialer. I've moved all my apps from external SD to phone internal and deleted App2SDpro. I've cancelled all automatic syncs. I'm not rooted and don't have any iffy software on it.
Does anyone please have any ideas on this?
No ideas?
Since the update mine does exactly the same thing. Sometimes it reboots after every hour or so but then sometimes it happens every 5 hours. Its completely random and has started happening since the ICS update.
Hmmm. I'm wondering if I should do another full install, or if this is a bug that will be absent in the official UK version of the new OS/firmware update.
I wonder if it is somehow specific to UK users?
It annoys the pants off me, because it will happen, then I'll delete a load of software and restart manually, then it will behave sometimes (like today) for 11-12 hours. And then it does it again. And again. I've had 12 hours between reboots from yesterday to today, and then today I've had three in four hours, including one after just an 11 minute interval, while the phone was on standby.
Is there anything that can be a 'variable' on an 'international' Note which might be an incompatibility in one territory but not another?
Sim? Network? Wifi?
I'm in UK, and was on German Ics official until today . Started experiencing fcs on random apps, from what I've read elsewhere that can be the start of a superbrick. I would highly recommend flashing back to stable GB immediately.

Well... We may be seeing an improvement.
When I installed German ICS on my UK Note I did it as an upgrade. So yesterday afternoon I put the note to sleep and then rebooted into hard reset. I got myself a nice clean system and after lots of restoring files and reinstalling apps, I now have a Note that spent all night charging and hasn't restarted itself since 6am. It still could... But hasn't yet.
Something else odd I noticed...
When I first installed ICS (without tweaks, messing, only on stock ROM) and came to install SwiftKeyX for Phone it refused, allowing me only to install the tablet version... This depressed me a little because the skin I use is nicer on the phone version than tablet. Oddly, this time, after the reinstall, the note would only install the phone version of SwiftKeyX, and not the tablet.
Not sure what changed and why, but I can only imagine that something was broke and is now fixed...
Time will tell. I think battery might be a little better now too. And I use JuiceDefender.
If I get a full 24 hours without reboots I might dare to try App2SD again and move some apps to card storage.
So far so good.
Arse. 19 hours later and the reformed Note spoiled itself with a random reboot during sleep.
Back to the drawing board.
So is this a hardware or software fault. Its so new that I could do with knowing... I can insist it be swapped. But am I going to get the same again? Has anyone been able to trap this erroneous reboot in logs or anything? Do we know what it is?
Are there just a few of us, or many? Former would suggest hardware, latter could be software.
I'm having this issue too. We need help here

Mine hasn't rebooted all night while on charge. I would also like to know if there are any logs that can pin point the issue

Perhaps it would be good idea to go back to your area GB also (following drKetan guides).
I had the same anectodal thing happening with my new note just when i purchased it. After 1..2 days it went grazy. Then it blacked totally out. But just by chance it woke up after resting without battery for a day.
Personally, I think, the cache should be cleaned - BUT i definitely will not recommend a wipe cache in LPY (though it worked with me - but then again, it COULD NOT work with you - and the loss... what a loss it would be). (worked with me - that means it did not brick my phone when i upgraded few days ago and that did not have anything to do with my troubles when I purchased the note (few months ago)).
I'm discouraged that there are either so few people suffering this that we're simply 'on our own' with it, or so many people who have it but have learned to accept it.
It seems preposterous to not have attention to such a big fault.
And I realised that I've seen this before, and have the sneaky feeling that it is a dirty little secret of Android....
I bought an ASUS Transformer last June. It had this issue from day one on Honeycomb. Random reboots at unpredictable times, at least two per day. Over the last 9 months it went back to ASUS three times and each time they 'fixed' something totally unrelated to the problem before eventually telling me that they had no replacement units to give me and were authorising a full buy back - a refund.
I had anecdotal indications that it only occurred when I had an SD card installed. That was my growing suspicion, but I now no longer have a unit to test it.
Other Galaxy range users have been reporting random or looped reboots, and have pinned blame on using an sd card, especially in conjunction with App2SD.
I have an HTC Flyer with an SD card installed, running App2SD, and have no random reboot problems. Its as solid as a rock on stock Honeycomb.
Similarly, though, some users have reported that their Galaxy phone model has random reboots relating to having a sim card installed...
You see where this is going. Its getting to the place where we're accepting that the only way our expensive device works is if we disable key functionality and surrender our expectations of its advertised features doing the job they were intended to.
It is scandalous that this device should malfunction as a result of using the advertised features, and that no fix would be found nor explanation offered.
I now have an SD in the unit, but have not moved apps with App2SD. I have established that the reboots occur with all three of my SD cards of varying sizes, soit is not caused by a corrupt or faulty SD... If it is caused by an SD at all, it is 'all' SD's. Since so many users have the Note with SD's installed, and they run perfectly, I can't believe there is an issue with SD cards, although I did wonder if the manufacturers are now phasing out SD slots in their devices because 'cloud computing' is all the rage, or rather because this volatility caused by SD in the now unfixable evolving Android code means that they are minimising their embarrassment by simply dispensing with the faulty variable.
I have also begun setting static IP's for all my stored wlan's in case this is a DHCP issue caused during momentary wakes from sleep for polling or sync. If only we had an app that could store, like a seismograph, a persistent record of device events which trigger the reboot and then capture the reboot events also. Closest I've found uses ram to store the events log and then blanks the log on reboot starting from the reboot instead of maintaining the record prior to the reboot.
Getting close to wits end with this, and now deeply regretting my purchase.
Nothing like this on my Xperia Arc S.
Even an iPhone is better than this!

Can you direct me to that guide?
And is it likely that it is the DE ICS release that just doesn't like UK devices? Why would that be so?
Looks like i'm going to get stuck with this problem until I move on to a next phone. What a waste

Maybe you should have waited for a stable release built using the UK or wwe equivalent rom? You didn't even give the stock more than a couple of days, what was the rush?!

Maybe, yes.
Naivete, perhaps.
I'll tell you exactly why.
I had an Xperia Arc S on ICS which I loved. I was tempted by the Note. I bought one expecting a Samsung flavored ICS experience, and got tossed back to GB. I basically had 7 days to return the Note or learn to like it, and during that period DE f/w was released and I had to know...
Note was rebooted using static ip's and is nowraring to go...
So far so good @ 18 hours

But if that was when your phone was still new why didn't you just return it for a replacement rather than root and flash a phone that wasn't stable in the first place? For all you know it may be a hardware issue and likely so as I've not heard any apart from you and the op mention it.
Anyway, your phone, your call what you do with it but it makes no sense to me to blame the manufacturer and model when you've not even followed basic steps to deal with an issue.

The first note I had in December 2011 rebooted at random. It was a hardware issue. It only started after owning it for 3 weeks, stock GB. Not roiled or modified in anyway. I had it replaced.

[Q] Galaxy note screen flickering and fake battery drain

Hello,
I've recently started having a strange issue with my Galaxy Note. The screen starts to ranomly flicker like crazy and then the device turns off. When I restart the phone it shows that I have 1% battery... which is not true because if left alone the phone starts to "magically" charge on its own over the course of the next 15-30 minutes. I've read that the flickering screen occurs when the battery is low and the screen tries to maintain its brightness, but this isn't my case as i've had this happen even at 80% battery charge.
Has anyone encountered this problem before? I've already tried restoring to factory settings to no avail.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance !
Yep, I experienced this last month. I had my galaxy note for just over one year when I started to have this problem.
Sent it back to Samsung and they fixed it free under the two year warranty (EU law). It seems to be an issue they are aware of. My battery now lasts a couple days and everything is back to normal. 4 day turn around for the repair straight to my door.
Give Samsung customer service a call A.S.A.P.
Good luck!

The S2??? I would prefer the S3 or Note 2. Jelly bean will probably be the last update for the S2 and possibly the N7000!
Make sure when you call the service department that you explain the issue as you have here on the forum... Don't say that you think the battery is gone... As with my repair it wasn't the battery... They said they changed a chip set or something like that.... Plus even if it is the battery, they are more likely to just replace it for free if you plead ignorance!
P.S. The best way to say thanks is to use the "thanks" button next to my post!

Erratic touchy glitchy touchscreen

I pre ordered the phone from at&t. I rooted the phone the first day root came out for us and I've been enjoying it since I got it. Always in a case with a screen protector and never abused or dropped. Yesterday my touchscreen started going crazy on me. Random ghost clicks and scrolling. Trying to type is a nightmare with the ghost touches. Maybe the case is messing with it some how? Took it off. Nope same thing. Maybe its the screen protector. Took it off. Nope same problem. Hmm, maybe its all the apps and home launcher. Did a factory reset of the Note 3.. SAME PROBLEM. Arrgg. The only thing I havent done that I can think of is remove root.
Any ideas? Since I'm past my two weeks with at&t what are my options here as far as returning it or getting it fixed? I've rooted it but I can just flash to stock with odin. I checked and I have NOT tripped the knox counter. If I flash back to stock though do I stand the chance of tripping knox and will it remove the custom lock that shows up at boot? Thanks for your help guys, this glitchy screen is killing me!

If you reflash using N900AUCUBMI9_OneClickBin.exe from DG's package, it will restore your phone back to stock without tripping knox. At least for me it didn't. It will also remove the custom lock. My problem was screen flickering/lines. I think it was caused by wanam/xposed. I might have triggered a setting. I restored then rerooted and so far so good.

Oh I see, well it might take me a little bit to reproduce it in front of them because its so erratic and happens randomly. Yes I still have my note 2 to hold me over. So at&t just sends it out to Samsung for repairs? Will Samsung be able to tell that I was rooted?

So just a follow up in case anyone else comes across this thread in the future. ukic, you're right. I flashed back to stock using the unroot method in DG's Root De La Vega thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-att/orig-development (Just follow the first 3 steps of the root process and stop, that will flash you back to stock) and it didn't trigger knox and the lock that says custom went away on the boot screen. Unfortunately, the touchscreen is still having major issues after flashing back to stock and removing root... Also, I spoke with at&t and they are sending me out a new Note 3 since it's still under warranty. When I get my new Note 3, all I have to do is send my erratic touchscreen Note 3 back to them. I hope the new one doesn't have any issues! :fingers-crossed: Hope this information will help anyone with any of the same questions in the future.
Your warranty is good for a year. So if you get a crap one again just let them know and they will send you another.

Wanam

I don't know if anyone else has experienced what I went through the past few days.
Every time I installed Wanam exposed my phone started acting crazy. A fc here and there at first. Then after messing with the settings everything including tw force closed. I had to reset my phone 3 times after installing wanam 3 times.
After resetting the third time I downloaded wanam again (everyone trying different settings). This time I didn't change any settings. I didn't get a chance to. As soon as it installed everything force closed.
After resetting I realized that I didn't have su and I was on 4.3.... This is right after I paid for su pro to block such an attempt.
I'm fed up with Samsung and att. If I wanted a phone I couldn't customize I would have got an icrap. I'll be looking to get rid of this phone and the crappy gear.
Never thought I'd see the day I gave up on Samsung...m sucha sad day
I don't know if this is a wanam issue or xposed, but I woke up the other day and my phone was maxed out on space. When I checked the space, xposed was using 21G of space for no apparent reason. I think xposed and wanam are more trouble than they are worth.

I am hoping that maybe there will be a way to install custom roms within the next 15 days so that I can bring it back and get my money.
So I'll stalk this forum for 2 weeks after that fair well guys.
As for Samsung and ATT its pretty sad that they are moving towards locking down the system. I feel that people buy the galaxy line of phones because we can customize them to our liking. Sad day!

[Q] SM-910T vs SM-N910T3, What is the difference?

Can anyone provide a point-by-point difference between the two other than "SM-N910T3 is just better"?
I've seen the question asked a few times in previous threads, reddit but I have not seen anything conclusive.
Also it seems the initial question becomes a quick after thought because it quickly delves into rooting questions, which I do not care about at this point.
I get that SM-N910T3 has 5.1.1. but what else? Heck even if its a best guess I'd love to hear it here.
For now this is what I got from Reddit:
pomidorable 2 points 14 days ago said:
Samsung likely changed suppliers for one or more of the key components (likely a cost reduction measure for a phone that's about to go out of production in a few months), and as such the ROM had to be altered to support it.

Anything and everything sir. What else did you notice? Does it still lag?
No lag that I noticed on 5.1.1. I haven't had note running on previous builds so hard to compare. Coming from Lg G4 and Note 3 before that

For what it's worth I had the N910A (on AT&T) for about 9 months. The T3 seems much snappier. It has it's quirks though, the pen icon gets stuck on in the notification bar and so does the headphone icon.

What do you mean
My pen icon gets stuck occasionally as well, I think it's a 5.1.1 issue unfortunately.

When I got my T3, I just went to Kies and reinstalled the software, haven't had that issue yet. Now it works better than my old Sprint Note 4

What was wrong with it that Samsung had to fix it? How did you get a newer phone and then your old phone back?
I ask because mine is starting throw fits like a stubborn mule and its really pissing me off. If it doesn't just lock up and freeze, its bt connections or dropped calls.
So the n910t3 is the developers edition?

Learned something new.. I was just had a long text chat with samsung suppoprt... it looks like the n910t3 may be the developer edition? they checked a few IMEI numbers / serial numbers and confirmed my device was developer edition which may explain the model number difference and may explain the 5.1.1 while n910t is left at 5.0.1 for now. Samsung also confirmed that Tmo has 5.1.1 and it's up to them to decide when / if to deploy it.

That's what Samsung told me over chat too. I have the chat saved. The rep also said I could go into a store and specifically request one (though I don't think that's right). I wonder why they're selling them? Possibly a large shipment was ordered in error? I wonder what the difference is aside from having 5.1.1. I know on the ROM development side of things, everything is mostly compatible.
I had that suspicion though too; I asked if it was an internal developer edition meant for testing updates before they're released to the public, and the Samsung rep reassured me that's exactly what it was. I wonder why they're for sale though.

BAH! Who knows and who cares now I guess. I just got off the phone with Tmobile and they told me its just a software update. Then I found this article pretty much saying the same thing, from last month.

My phone completely died. Turn around was about a week and a day.
Ok so about the SM-N910T3 compared to my previous 910T and what I've accidentally...
Ok so a few things I've accidentally noticed about my T3.
First off, Had to get my Note 4 replaced by T-mobile 2 days ago, they said it was on backorder, so I get a brand new Note 4 direct from Samsung and then I realized the registration screens looked slightly different, so I went to the settings menu, I'm like "Something doesn't feel right" so then I found it, 5.1.1 which I tried updating my 910T 3 days ago, and wouldn't go beyond 5.0.1 THEN found out it was the N910T3 that i Had just gotten.
After careful review on my old NOTE 4 to still send back, the glass on the Note 4 curves down INTO the walls around the edge of the phone. about 0.5mm depth, on the SM-N910T3 it doesn't. It curves down, but almost PERFECTLY LEVEL to the edge walls., ALSO haven't gotten to try the GPS thing yet, but mine worked FAIRLY well always anyways.
The OTHER major thing I've noticed, and this is WITHOUT the battery, since a charged battery weighs slightly more than an uncharged one.
119g for the SM-N910T vs 123g for the SM-N910T3 == 4grams difference in weight? S-pen is the same, both with a sim card and microSD card, no battery. Hardware upgrade?
I said screw it in the end and ponied up to buy a new one. I swear to gawd every employee looked at me crossed eyed when I told them I didn't want to buy the Note 5.
I must have gotten the last normal note 4 then through warranty because that is what they sent me. I called Tmobile and tried to get it resolved but they told me to contact Samsung (I did) and they told me they were just going to fix my phone and I'd be without one for about 10 days.
As for differences I did notice the extra option at boot up too. My GPS seems to lock a lot faster. I will have to keep playing with it though to verify as I haven't had much time to go through it yet but I will say the Samsung Smart Switch was very nifty in getting my settings transferred over.

I switched from sprint to T-Mobile a few weeks ago, caught them throttling my data after 13GB. Had to ditch the sprint note 4 and get the Note 4 through JOD
