Wow, this escalated quickly. Couldn't have imagined this amount of attention, and the XDA News, too! I want to thank you all for your support. :highfive: :victory:
Hey, guys, I've made a simple DIY desktop dock with charging for our 4X HD out of Lego bricks and parts and I want to share the building instructions with you in case someone else wishes one. All the Legos used are quite usual, some can be easly substituted and some aren't really required, but I've included them nevertheless. Three main points of this guide:
1. No Lego bricks are damaged/irreversibly altered.
2. No additional materials required, other than USB cable, naturally. Only pressure, friction and stacking are permitted while assembling to keep the parts in place.
3. No too-specific/weird-looking/rare parts that can't be easily substituted or not be used at all. Only the more common ones.
The dock isn't a looker, but this is a really sturdy, riggid and robust phone stand considering the materials used in the making as Legos can be quite wobbly.
Some images of the dock

Bottom view with cable management
I've attached a Lego Digital Designer 4.3 file, and an HTML guide (if you do not want to utilize LDD) which a bit confusing at at first, but that's the way the program auto-made it, no helping it. The attached files hold all the information on the Lego parts necessary. The only thing that is missing from the attached guide and the only thing I weren't able to do in LegoDD is the merging of the bottom and top parts:
You need to join these holes
with these
to get this kind of connection between bricks
The charging part is achieved through this Roline microUSB cable. The reason I mention a specific cable is because the male MicroUSB connector absolutely must have 8x10 millimeters face, as shown in the pic. Obviously, you can use another maker's if it it meets this condition.
8x10mm are the measures of a standard 1x1 Lego brick. This is imperative because we'll jam the mUSB head into the Lego parts and the friction and pressure will hold it firmly in place.
UPDATE: For most of us who have only LG's USB cable, here's an alternative base design Post #17. It doesn't conform to this design, but it solves the "keep-the-cable-in-place" problem and opens the posibilities for other designs to be constructed.
Here's a (really) short video of the dock in action. The mUSB plug holds the phone even when upside-down. The grip is so strong that the side beams and the back aren't really needed, but I feel better having them. In adition, the phone slides between side beams and the back nearly perfectly and, despite not appearing so, there is no chance of it to be scratched, the Legos are smooth.
**************************************************
Further thoughts: the design is fairly changeable. I started it as a horizontal dock but then changed it b/c it's more practical in my views. A "backplate" out of long flat tiles can be added to the back beams so you could stick an LG NFC tag onto it (I have no spares to do this).
**************************************************

Our own @LGaljo was kind enough to make instructions for his dock

You're a fuc*ing genius man!
You are mad ! But i like it !
Awesome!
Thank you so much, guys! I'm hopefull somebody other than me will build one, perhaps even improve the design.
Wow, very very nice!!!!!! *.*

@UsernameWasTaken Can you add my design of charging dock to your thread? I don't really want to make another thread
I used simpler legos, because I didn't have ones you had.
If you agreed, I will add .lxf and write build instructions

Yes, ofc. I like it! Mine is bulkier b/c I was concerned with it falling apart, thats why I added the crossbeams and supporting tiles. Also, the set I used is a Technic, so it consists mainly of those hollow bricks.
From the pic I can see the microusb plug is thinner and wider. Does it hold hard enough to slide and unplug the phone without it being pushed out or pulled in?

Power plug is official LG. It is held strong enough. I helped it with a piece of folded paper.

This really is awesome, I'm so gonna build one too . I got tons of lego at home since was into them as a child.
So next weekend or the one after it's lego time again!! )
Anyone wanna help design a dock for the LG G Flex?
o great!
I think you have created monsters out of us with this idea!
Great thread - and it's made the XDA news, too! Congratulations
How about adding some NFC tags?
Hahaha, oh, wow! Guys, thank you all so much for the support!
Now, I have another treat for you all. I got inspired by @LGaljo's creation.
Most of us got only one USB cable, LG's, that is. Its problem: doesn't conform to the measures I've posted. So, how to fix it's microusb plug inside the dock? With this:
This solves the main problem which is how to make the mUSB part stay in place. I won't be making a whole new dock out of this. Rather, I leave it to your imagination. Use it as you like

I mentioned that in OP, but currently I have none to do it. The one I got with the phone is used in the car.
Nicely done, Shouldn't this thread be way cooler in general section? so docks for all devices could be shared :highfive:
Nice one, especially the way you fixed the cable Thank you very much, you made me touch Lego for the first time in 15 years and i'm really glad to rediscover something i enjoyed doing very much back in my younger years here's what i was able to make out of what i found in an old box, no charger attached, but i'm out of blocks, i cannot find my bigger stash

So... do you have any suggestions for nice portable stands for the HD2.

What did you use as the material for it? An old credit card or something?
And whilst I can just make one, does anyone know where you can get these in the UK (for a comparable price)

Looks like it might tip over (forward) easily.
I use my PSP stand with the HD2 in landscape mode. There are a couple of small notches on the stand which keep the HD2 from sliding out when touching the screen.

Having some oldies like the HD and the new HD2 this is a perfect solution.
Looks nice in my vitrine, all transparent. just what I needed.
Those DV cassetboxes had been gathering dust, and almost threw them away twice. You see, who keeps, has..
Brilliant idea been waiting for a long time for someone to come up with a slim easy to stow cradle. Will be useful on the next plane journey. Just ordered a few to share with friends as well.

Even though the GoGoSTand is very cool I ended up using something a little bit more sturdy... a paper stand!! It's very sturdy and even though it doesn't fit inside your wallet it can be folded and put inside a pocket.
It's almost the same as the The $100 iPhone Stand ... I just modified the base a little bit.
Brgds... /TubGirl
I've got an HD2 and a GoGo stand. Landscape it's fine, portrait it works but it's not as stable as I'd like. To be fair the HD2 is a big chunk of phone and these things were designed primarily for iPhones.
They're dirt cheap and mine arrived from the US within days of ordering it so I'd buy one unless you're really into DIY.

Wow the gogo stand is just what I wanted, but I didn't fancy waiting for international shipping, so have made something similar with a cut out bit of cardboard. Took about 2mins to make and works fine for landscape mode, which is what I need for typing with anyway (using external keyboard). Also fits nicely in my wallet.
I just pre-ordered the HTC extended battery for the HD2 off play.com, yes it makes the phone a bit bulky (not much more than my old W810i though), and it comes with a stand that pops out the back. Nothing extra to carry around!
my969: big thanks

Not sure when or if Defy will get its own Deck Dock. But my wife got me these somewhat useless business card holders. However, as they're steel, I stuck a magnet to the back, put in my Defy and voila! Deck Dock!

Wouldn't the BB Torch's charging dock suit?
Hi all,
Within weeks I'll receive my first Android phone, after 5 years using WM. Really hope to get adapted to this new platform. It's that I'm that lucky guy who has happened to win Clove's Motorola Defy giveaway competition .
Anyway, this is purely theoretical, but I have noticed that the Blackberry Torch 9800, closed, is slightly bigger than the Defy, in all 3 dimensions. Besides, its charging dock + home charger (you'll be able to find some of them on eBay, like e.g. this one) takes the Torch in landscape mode, and seems to have its male micro-USB port more to the right side, related to its center, which could match the Defy's. Don't know whether it bears a magnet or not, though. Or, if it is be placed in the same location as required by the Defy sensor. Despite all 'ifs', I wonder if the Defy would fit in.
Anyone here would be brave enough to try one of those and see if it fits?
Just my 2 cents...
Regards,
Carlos
Do you have a BB Torch to compare? The USB adpater would have to be in the same orientation as the Defy's, which is "upside down" (narrow edge up). You'd have to have room to move the USB cover aside on the Defy too.

Unfortunately, not. It was pure speculation. Maybe someone here can make a simple test...
According to Mobilefun.co.uk, this thing should fit the defy as well...
Anyone feel like taking one for the team and putting their claims to the test? Looks like a nice dock but I'm afraid that A) it won't fit snugly and B) the usb cover will get in the way.

It might be worth asking them if they can provide photos to back up their claim.
It's in their best interest after all as I'm sure a few of us are interested in finding a decent desktop dock for their Defy.
What? Milestone (Droid)'s dock?
I don't see how the Milestone's dock would suit the Defy, since the former's micro-USB port is to the left, whilst the latter's is to the right.
I might me heavily wrong though (as usual)...
Regards,
Carlos
Anyone had any luck finding a dock for this thing? I am interested as well.
Some guy's come up with a DIY Dock, credits to uploader
Sorry can't paste links so go to youtube and type in "Motorola Defy media dock"
Looks neat
It's made of cardboard - cereal box style. Good effort tho.
Could be a market for aftermarket stands if someone wants to make them... worked for a guy on maemo.org for the N900. He made them out of laser cut wood and sold them via an online shop he set up. Was very popular.
Considering one of these docks
There are lots of docks for the droids and milestones but none designed for the defy yet. But I did come across a couple candidates that I am considering and wondered if anyone had tried either of them yet.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003DM4KLW/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=A2LD2YC4L2Z2RO
http://www.clingo.com/home-and-office/universal-podium/
I am leaning towards the first one listed from amazon but the second also looks pretty nice. Neither has a build in charger that will line up with the defy but they have plenty of open space to allow for a usb to plug in.
I use a Clingo which is simple. It doesn't have the magnet required to automatically activate dock mode, of course.
I made this dock/nightstand for my droid incredible. I would show you how good it looks with the phone in it, but I used my phone to take the picture.

Really?
I shared what I had built as it was at the moment. Isn't that what this developer's forum is all about? Perhaps you can help us all out and run over to every thread where someone has posted a beta, alpha, or nightly and let them know that they have an epic fail for not making sure it was not needing any more development before they posted it.

Nice job man! Love the black carved out Androids!
That's pretty awesome. I'd be too afraid of the heat though. Still great build nonetheless.
Good job on the dock. It's pretty cool...you even got a little notch for the camera on the droid inc.
I wish I was half as creative and handy as you. Very nice job!
That's pretty cool! I actually cruised over here to see if anyone made their own dock recently.
finally
Finally got around to taking a picture of the dock with the phone in it. The display is the "night display" from Gentle Alarm. In the background, you can even see part of the landline and the alarm clock made not necessary by the phone in the dock.
wow over 1600 views
I just looked at this thread and realized over 1,600 people have looked at my dock. Wow. I have been using it for several months as an alarm clock in the dock every night and so far no heat issues. It has been working out very well. After seeing how many people were interested in a dock I think I should have offered to make and sell them. I still could, but I imagine the market for a new dock for this old phone is dwindling.
I would buy one. Red androids please.

Ok, if you want one I can make one. I wouldn't expect to be making very many of these so each one could be customized. That one was made in pine which I stained with a pecan stain. I have since come across some walnut boards. I could make one in walnut which would look much better than pine. If you want some other type of wood I can see about getting some. I used a micro to standard USB cable which allows me to either plug it into the computer or into the standard dinc AC adapter. I can also change the design with more or less androids, your name or some completely different design, even a square or sculpted top rather than a round one.
If something in the neighborhood of 50 bucks is in your price range let me know along with any specifics of the design you want.
And, of course, for everyone elses' enjoyment I can post a picture here when it is done.
How do you have your usb plug secured in there? I've been trying to come up with a design for one of my own since I always use my phone as my alarm clock, but I've not come up with a good way to get the plug to stay in place so that the phone can be plugged in easily.

I placed the phone in the holder then I plugged the usb connector into it through the other hole I had cut for it. Then I put some gorilla glue around the plastic part of the plug being careful to keep it away from the end. Gorilla glue expands and fills the space around the plug. I lightly clamped the phone in place overnight, but a couple hours should be enough, and then when I removed the clamp, the plug is secured in place exactly where it needs to be.
Cool idea, looks great!

Aha, I had that same thought as well!
I was in the market for a case with a keyboard included, and there are a ton out there. This one caught my eye because of the included sd card reader. I actually thought that it was going to be a mini-usb connection, but if I just read more carefully, I would seen that it says USB in plain sight. Anyway, not that big of a deal, Im sure there are mini-usb to usb converters I could snag. I just received this this today and overall Im pretty happy with it so far.

This is the packaging it came in... Pretty standard, I guess. Not much to say about this portion of the review, moving on.
Its definitely not real leather, as indicated by the title. But, Im actually impressed with the feel of it. Now, I haven't been in the tablet crowd for very long. This is my second tablet to a Toshiba Thrive. I didn't buy a case for it. I bought a sleeve case for my Nexus 7 before this one, and it was pretty handy. However, this one is just what I was looking for in a case. The Nexus 7 slides right in to the sleeve part on the top and is a great fit. The opening for the screen gives enough room on all sides. The camera cutout, also, gives enough room for it's intended purpose as well.
I've read around that a lot of people dislike keyboards with tablets, but I think it's quite handy. I'm getting away from using my computer almost completely because of how advanced these tablets are getting and a keyboard gives me that extra push. The keyboard with this case definitely takes some getting used to, but not as much as I thought it would. I'm writing this review with it now, in fact.
The response of the keys are pretty spot on. Every once in a while I'll miss a keystroke due to the fact that I'm not used to the compact style yet. The layout of the keys are a tad different, but I do think that it is a form factor for these smaller keyboards. Enlighten me if this is not the case. The special function keys work as well... There are volume keys, a shortcut for email, music playback keys, and much more. They all seem to work well. It was easy as anything else as far as connecting it to the tablet via bluetooth. I think I read that you can get upwards of 50 hours of typing time on it before it needs a charge. Also, it has some blue LEDs built in, giving it a nice look when you turn it on and pair the device. The keyboard is secured by magnets, which I just found out as I lifted it off of the case. Nice feature, now that I can just sit back and type with the tablet a few feet in front.
I read about a case being titled a "Smart Case" and this one is indeed a smart case. Whenever you close the device, the tablet turns off, and sure enough, opening it turns it on. Great idea and great functionality with this case.
Here's the card reader. Nothing too special, but small enough to where I can get an inline adapter and connect it via the miniusb port and have some extra space when I need it. Glad it came with the case.
So, there you have it as far as my review goes. I'm very happy with this case, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a well made case that comes with a keyboard. It's not too expensive, but it's not the cheapest one out there either. Well worth it in my opinion.
*EDIT* Forgot to post pictures of the case closed:

Thanks for the review. Much appreciated
Can you post pics of it using the kickstand?
I'm trying to decide whether I should get this (along w/ a wireless mouse) so I can use my Nexus 7 at work for meetings, taking notes, etc.
Or if I should go with one of the more traditional keyboards, like the Logitech -- http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Tablet-Keyboard-Android-920-003390/dp/B0054L8N7M?tag=notebookscom-20
Thanks for the review. But there two things stopping me from buying a bluetooth keyboard.
One is the reliability factor. I'm tired of getting burned by the no names. My last corded keyboard lasted one day.
Second is the flatness of all the keys. Most bluetooth keyboards have the same flat keys that is hard to feel them apart.
I've seen a couple with better keys, like the one below, but they have the cutout for Galaxies and not Nexus. Even then, I'm still considering one of them and cutting the 'leather' to fit he Nexus inputs. But the reliability fear doubles when I think of that.
So, as of right now I feel stuck. I will ask you again next month to see how well the board is holding. Until then I will keep looking around for something that matches what I want.

Posted the same picture twice on last post... oops. But there are some pics of the stand.

Leather cases to me look horrible.
I don't know if its just my style or what but I don't like them.
Is the keyboard detachable from the case?
Or is it in-built?
Thanks for the review btw !

My idea for that would be to integrate a sleek kickstand on the back of the case.
Currently I would say that the back plate would have to integrate some sort of kickstand. I think this wouldnt be too hard to do. Also, if you lay your Note 2 across your keyboard to see just how many keys would fit on this, you would notice that it isnt too far off from a cramped up netbook-style keyboard. I think it would be usable for most people.
I want a cover that has a cutout for the back camera so it wouldn't be awkward to take a picture.

I would just let the cover hang down when taking a pic. Honestly I think that the huge hole in the cover would defeat the purpose of having the keyboard there in the first place. It just wouldnt work. And that hole would look straight up stupid when the cover would be closed. Idk .
I would be down to support, looks sick!

That is a great idea! I would buy that
Love XDA. Fresh ideas every day.
I like it!
there are some bluetooth keyboards that you could hack up to make a mockup..
Honest questions: does MS have a pending patent for this design? If so, would it affect the development?
I'd support that, but depending on how long development would be. Lots of Kickstarter projects take forever to start shipping. I might be on the Note 3 by then...
I'd prefer a slide out KB case. How much would this cost? If it's like $100 no thanks

That's why I took my flip cover back after a day. Too awkward to take photos, and it got in the way of my car dock.
I'd support / buy that!

I would be glad to entertain the idea of putting this up on kickstarter if there is enough interest. Would require a hefty amount of research and dev however.

Great idea. Great mock-up. Spread ther word
I'd buy it although I haven't used a "querty" for over 2 years.
I would probably look really close at buying it if it were on the shelf right now. I think it is a terrible idea from a financial perspective. You have to look at how many of these phones are out there and what percent of people would buy. Like the other poster stated, we will be on a newer generation phone by the time this comes out.
You are also screwing yourself because all this money and time goes into one particular item for only one model of phone. Don't waste your time or money. Try to find something universal that many different phone owners can use.
THE problems with this.
1) The vast majority of users are perfectly happy typing on their screen.
2) Obviously, since it is so small, the idea of "touch" typing is out. It will still be hunt and peck.
3) If this is laying flat on your desk as you type, what is to keep it from sliding all over the place every time you hit the keypad? The Note II doesn't weigh enough to keep it in place.
4) Flip cases are already expensive. One with a kickstand and keyboard will be prohibitively so. Does the user receive enough additional benefit to justify the additional cost?
5) M$ spent a lot of money creating their flip cover keyboard. You would probably run into patent infringement left and right.
I think this would be one of those products that looks cool which no one buys - or at least not in the volume necessary. Think about it this way. Cases have been around for a long time manufactured by companies always looking for ways to make money. Since no one has tried anything like this you have to ask yourself why not? Probably because they determined they could not make any money.
Cool idea, won't work. You are trying to turn a handheld device into a desktop device. The ergonomics are all wrong.
Hi. For sure this is not a new idea (Surface) but it looks interesting. However the biggest issue is the size of the keyboard. It is too small in order to use it like a small Surface.
Looking good. I will consider to buy it.
it's a solid idea. Obviously, from a business standpoint, I"m like others and question how well it sell for various price points versus the cost.
The other issue I see, the cover lends itself to a landscape mode on the phone only. As one who uses a BT keyboard with the phone at times, not all apps are landscape friendly. I have Freedom Pro portable blue tooth keyboard; supports both HID and PTP formats.
Plus given the same of the cover, it may not be that user friendly for regular typing. The keyboard to type on would be about the size a chatpad used on controllers for video game consoles. Unfortunately, their size of my thumb typing friendly versus ten finger typing (what an awkward way to stated that).
I do agree there is a market for something that is compact, extremely portable, for phablets to type on. There is a reason way the Surface has it, there are quite a few for iPad and other tablets. Personally, I don't really like using virtual keyboards; I hold great disdain to autocorrect. II may be more old school since I've been using full keyboards for around thirty years, so it's basically ingrained into me the correct feel.
It's possible a slide out keyboard may be a better option in this situation. The bad part, added bulk. Not everyone is like me and doesn't care how think of phone gets. The plus side, if designed right, no need for a flat surface around, thus can use while just out an about, say at a bus stop. Then again, it could be redundant with the size of the phone which also influences it's own virtual keyboard.

I love the Windows keyboard (see windows key at the top left corner). If you do go Kickstarter, I would change that to an Android symbol. I agree about possible litigation. I would check make sure MS or something get a patent on a cover keyboard. If they did, you could still do it, just need to work out the royalty with them that makes sense for you to be profitable.
