The subject is my question. Is there anyway to play a video_ts folder on chromecast? I have a bunch of video_ts folders from some dvds I have that are currently on my media server. I'd like to play them onto the chromecast. Any chance of this? I am I going to have to rip them all to another format and play through plex (like I'm doing with many other movies right now)
Chromecast can only play H.264 encoded videos (mp4).

You would need to covert your DVD's to a mp4 video file.

I managed to play it, transcoded with BubbleUPnP server
So I need to install bubbleupnp server on my media drive comoyter and it should work?

Two options:
You need to encode your videos to a CC compatible format with the likes of Handbrake. Or install a server like Plex/Bubble onto a machine that is transcode on the fly capable. Being that you're doing Video_TS your server will need quite the beefy processor afaik. Either way though, I recommend setting up a media server (Plex fan here).

I agree with this...I can't see the folders at all...I have taken to converting them all to mp4 files for now, but if I could play the native VIDEO_TS folder files that would be best.

Yes, extension installed on both machines and I am able to successfully push other media (youtube, tab mirroring, etc) to the CC
AVI is a container - the codec is what does the deflating & reflating. See to it you've the proper codec(s) in place.
There used to be a third party MSish codecs installer for QuickTime: FlipView?

I am fully aware of the CTRL-O, if you read my OP you would see that I can access the file but instead of playing, the file downloads (on my PC) the MACBook tries to open it with quicktime but presumably a codec issue. I would much prefer this working on the PC since I hate the MAC and I dont know how to use the POS.
Might want to give Plex Media a try. I know it's probably not the solution you're looking for but it is an option.

Both VUDU and Netflix that rely on runtimes such as Silverlight have had problems running on Linux for a while now due to compatibility and other issues. However you can get Netflix to run on Raspberry Pi with pretty decent performance by streaming it through your PC to the Raspberry Pi. For streaming Netflix through your PC I would recommend taking a look at this guide. An alternative to both Netflix and VUDU streaming using XBMC on the Raspberry Pi is the plugin XBMC Flicks.

Keep in mind XBMC is basically just a video FILE player. Its not really a streaming device of any sort. It made to have a library of video files such as DVD rips etc and play them.

Xbmc does support upnp streaming both as a client and a server. I often stream music from foobar to xbmc just because it's easier to make play lists

By compatible do you mean you are trying to use that tablet as a monitor for the Raspberry Pi? Does the tablet have hdmi-in capability? What you can do is use the Raspberry Pi and your tablet using a VNC viewer, I would recommend checking out this tutorial on how to use a Raspberry Pi in headless mode with a tablet.

Been hoping for the same thing! Waiting for Chromecast to cast any video stream to my TV. Including my 1Channel app on xbmc
If you want to stream videos to XBMC using Chromecast technology then XBMC will need to embed Chromecast display/render functionality which may be difficult to impossible to include DRM which might make it useless. The other way around does not make any sense for XBMC as it does not transcode and act as a library, it's a self contained library and renderer. I've messed around with XBMC, My Movies, Plex and all have their advantages. I'm really hoping for Plex support so I can browse my movie library on my phone and cast it to the Chromecast just like youtube, google movies, etc.

XBMC does not transcode and by design is a renderer so unless XBMC completely changes their goals and design it just won't happen. Look at Plex it's designed this way, to have a back end media server transcoding to stream to basically any device. All they really need to do is define a transcode type for Chromecast then implement the front end controls into the Android app.

Plex gets installed on your PC (media library and transcoder) then you can run any number of Plex renderers (on PC, Android, Roku, etc). It should be relatively easy for Plex to add Chromecast support as it's designed to work just like Chromecast works. However I would rather use a Chromecast then a Roku...

Not a guarantee, but cant see them passing it up.

There is a lot of talk about it and Plex offically says they are highly considering it or something like that but they have not officially committed to it. I really have no doubt that they will, it's a perfect fit!

The only reason I'm more in favor of Plex over Bubble is that Plex does transcoding while Bubble doesn't. So I can play MKV files with Plex while with Bubble I can't. I would like to be able to stream every format I have instead of just the select native formats that the Chromecast can serve. Plex has an awesome transcoder so I really hope they can release this.
(edit: NM I'm an idiot. Plex runs as a DLNA server so it will do the transcoding through Bubble. Either way it looks like Koush seems to be close to including this feature into Allcast).
Hi,
It's now possible to cast xmbc over chromecast through Avia Player ($2.99 charge for Addon). Video tutorials up on YouTube explains how.
Using Smartphone - XMBC can be watched over Chromecast through Avia Player which costs $2.99. YouTube Video shows how.

It's a double-whammy because AVIs are container files (it has nothing to do with the stuff stored inside), and the compression within AVIs tend to not be streaming-friendly.
A lot of commonly-used CODECs for AVIs store essential decoding stuff at the end of the stream. Not a problem for file-based playback, but horrible for streaming playback since devices can't forsee the future.
Unpacking the AVI container isn't too bad, it's the other stuff - and making sense of the FourCC CODEC identifier at the other end that's the challenge.
What is the best piece of software that will convert avi to mp4?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
I could have sworn that I've streamed Avi files, the problem is the codec, which are usually not compatible.
You can even test this by changing the codec and leaving Avi as a container.

I suggest A's Video Converter if you have a newer Intel CPU or AMD graphic card, it utilizes them for fast encoding without slowing down the computer much. For a fast computer it could take 10-15 minutes to convert a full movie instead of an hour or more. It's a batch converter so you can add your files and let it run over night.
http://bluesky23.yu-nagi.com/en/AsVideoConv.html
You have to set up a few things in the app like set Encoder to AMD VCE or Intel QSV. Also the correct formats to be compatible with Chromecast (MP4 container, H.264 video, AAC audio).
If you have nVidia graphic card you can use CUDA for fast encoding, but most programs that utilizes it cost money, such as Badaboom.

RealPlayer Cloud is sort of like a "cloud Plex" - their SureStream feature makes sure the requesting device gets a stream that it can play - even if the source file isn't normally playable. tl;dr - RealPlayer Cloud does the transcoding for you - as long as the media is on their cloud.
I have a handful of videos in my google drive account that I want to stream to my chromecast from my android device. I don't want to do a tab cast from a computer.
If I hold on the video in drive, it gives an option to "open with", so I could choose Avia and play it that way. The problem with that is it requires the entire video file to be downloaded first (not a very function option since I could just download the video first as well).
So, anybody know of a way to stream a video from my drive account to my chromecast? Thanks!
I don't know of any way myself (perhaps others do) but I wouldn't expect GDrive to be set up to stream the file at all.
Perhaps this is something that the GPlay Movie app should take into consideration for adding since they do seem intent on integrating all of their services They own all the servers so a request fro GPlay Movie app could redirect the sending of a file to a streaming server that would remove the need to download the file...
I use cloud storage sparingly and usually only to share files to friends family and clients...
I have Plex to serve my media to me wherever I want it.
