Solved: Insufficient Storage on app restore! - Galaxy S 4 Active Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This applies to At&t i537, but might work for others as well
I was about to pull my hair out because I couldn't restore a few apps from backup or re-download from the market without the "insufficient storage" error. Theres no way im actually out of memory, so i knew something else was going on. I searched XDA & Google without finding much.
I discovered it has to do with some problems with the uninstall of the app. Basically, if android doesn't clear ALL of the data on uninstall, there's no way to reinstall it. In other words, your phone thinks its already there.
My fix-
*Must be rooted*
-I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU MESS UP- THIS IS ONLY ADVICE!!
The app & its data must be deleted from 3 places.
Using Root Explorer, go to the data folder.
Inside you must delete the app from folders:
1. App
2. App-lib
3. Data
Now install the app from backup or market.
To keep this from happening, I delete all app data in App Manager before uninstall.
If I've helped, don't forget to hit the thanks button.

[Q] Restoring Apps Using Titanium Backup

After dealing with frustration after frustration with apps and HC, I decided to switch over to CM7. I backed everything up with Titanium Backup Pro then did a nandroid, then installed CM7 release 29. Everything went great with the install but I can not restore any of my backed up apps.
When I go to my backup/restore list, then select an app to restore, I get the dialog for app only or app + data. If I hit app only, it comes back and says that "App restore complete" but when I look at my drawer, the app is not there and in TB Pro, it still has the line through the listed app. If I hit restore app + data, I get the message App + Data restore failed. I've tried downloading the apps from the Market, then trying to just restore the data but that doesn't work either. I get the message that says it's complete but when I load the app the first time, no settings have been changed.
I also tried going into root explorer, changing the /system/app directory to R/W but that doesn't seem to make a difference. I've updated su and busybox from within TB and using the stand alone apps. I've tried unmounting and remounting the sd card. I've tried rebooting. Nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?
I have the nandroid so I can go back to HC and try an alternate backup method but I'd love to get this just to work.
The version of Titanium Backup that I am using is 3.7.4.1.
Thanks.

There are three options in the Problems? menu.
Check Wiki
Update Busybox
Update Superuser
I looked at the wiki and it didn't provide an answer to this problem. I updated Busybox again and Superuser was already updated.
I have TB set to keep 3 backups. I went and did another backup then verified all backup files. Over 100 files, including some that I just backed up under CM7, came up corrupt.
Any ideas why the majority of files backed up are corrupt? Clearly depending on TB to backup apps on the Nook was a bad idea.

I'm having this problem as well. TB has never worked on any of my roms. I usually try to do a lot of searching before I post, I'm usually not the first to have problems. But I can't seem to find a solution anywhere.
I think you have to go into settings and into application settings then tick the box to allow unknown sources.

[Q] Market won't recognize sideloaded apps

It seems that since updating to the AT&T 2.2 Froyo update and rooting the market will not recognize any side loaded apps that have been added to the phone since upgrading to 2.2. All apps that I side loaded on 2.1 are recognized and can be updated but nothing on 2.2. Anyone else have this problem and if so have you been able to fix this issue?
I used SuperOneClick to root the phone and did a reboot the phone afterward to allow side loading of apps and it is working. I am still using the adb install command to side load all my apps, is this wrong?
If this is something that is not to be discussed I apologize now.
Well I don't have a direct answer to your question but since you are rooted I highly suggest you go and get Titanium Backup along with atrackdog.
The former application will alloa you to backup any applications you want (or aall of them) and then save them to your computer. you can then move the folder to any phone and use Titanium to reinstall the applications exactly where you left off. That means launchers will have the same layouts and games will still have their save states.
The latter will allow you to check the update status of those applications since they won't show up as downloaded applications from the market.

Titanium Backup has been installed since rooted on 2.1 but will have to check out atrackdog. Thanks for the help so far.

side loaded paid apps will NEVER show in market.
free ones can be restored...
tibu has never been able to restore market links for me either.
there used to be a program MCleaner but it got taken off the market..
but all it did was this (do it yourself)
Menu button > Settings > Applications > Manage Apps > All > Market
- force stop
- clear data
- clear cache (if availavle)
restart market > my apps

Actually, it does. Market only keeps track of the apps you buy/download through it. What you're asking is like expecting Wal-Mart to know what you bought from Target.
Hey guys I just had a question while reading through the replies.
I downloaded atrakdog and got a list of all the apps needed to be updated.
One of the apps was the market..
Mine is version 2.3.4
I need to update to 5.0.12
How do you update market? Btw I'm running cm7 does this effect it?
Sent from my phone
Market should update automatically. As far as the sideload apps you can. Also get root explorer and copy paste them to system/app then reboot and they'll all be there.

So your are saying instead of using adb installer just do a drop and drag to the system/app folder and install them that way? Now will that put them in the market place? I don't quite understand what you are really saying here. Excuse my ignorance.

That's exactly what I was thinking was moving the file to the system/app file then reinstalling the .apk first then doing the 3 button reboot to see if it would recognize the app on the market. I did try just a 3 button reboot after side loading a few apps using ADB Installer and just doing the normal drop and drag to the sim card and I know that doesn't recognize them. I am going to try and reinstall one of my apps that way and I will let you know if it shows up or not.
When trying to move a new .apk file to the system/app file it says "You cannot paste here because the file system is a read-only."

You have to click the small window at the top of the screen in root explorer that changes r/o to r/w. You have to do that in each directory you want to edit.

[Q] Phone not saving settings

When I turn my phone off and back on, it seems some application revert to default settings. Eg. some of them lose the "don't ask me again" status of dialogs, some forget other statuses and some games even forget which level you completed.
I'm using 2.3.3 Official, not rooted (applied via Kies with no hacks). Anyway to fix this?
(I'm pretty sure all of these settings survived a reboot when I first got me phone with 2.1 installed)
Sounds like your database is corrupted, maybe due to lagfix not uninstalled correctly.
You will need to wipe internal sd card, factory reset and maybe reflash with repartition 512.pit

Try an Wipe and format the Sdcard! Make a Backup of your Data.

I'm a newbie and I have the same problem.
How do I backup the data? From Kies I only find options to backup the Contacts, Music, Photo and Videos. What about the apps and other data like SMS, call history, etc?
Really appreciate the help. Thanks.
If you have root use titanium backup.
If you dont have root use appbrain.

I've just instaled appbrain. It doesn't seem to have options to backup text messages, and call history. Any app can do that?
Thanks a million
There was a problem wit 2.2.1 because samsung mounted dbdata folder in the wrong place (to fix the lag) maybe its the same problem, still unfixed....
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Its the problem of dbdata. That problem was never fixed.
To reproduce the issue, you can install an app, uninstall and reinstall it. After that, settings wont be saved for that app.
If you install an app and never uninstall, then the app will work correctly.

ummm, sorry for the stupid question, but what's the difference between wipe and format the sdcard? I know I can't format the sdcard from the phone, but how about wipe? how do I do that?
Thanks.

Uninstalled an app, now get 'insufficient storage available' when i try to re-install

I installed FPSE, and then uninstalled it after having problems, but now I cannot install either the version I downloaded, or the version from the store. Both tell me I have insufficient storage space available, even though I have well over a gig free.
Also I am able to install other things.
Any ideas?
I am using Gingerbread 2.3.6, rooted..
Just redid the procedure with Odin to root, just in case that might clear something, but no...

Use some Root Browser to check your system folder to see if you have available storage space. Sometime the old files are not deleted and they fill up the storage space. If this is the case you need to format the system folder before you can install anything.
I had the same problem too, after I uninstalled N.O.V.A. 3 and can't install it back. But other apps has no problem of installing.
SD maid from Playstore might help here^_^.
Contrary to the name, it clears cache and left over data and logs from the phone internal and external memory.

If you have another Android device, you can force the app back on your phone.
1) Install app on other device
2) Make Titanium Backup of app on other device and send it to your phone
3) Open Titanium Backup on phone and go into preferences; change restore location to external storage
4) Restore app backup from other device
5) After restoring app, go into Settings -> Applications and move the app from SD to phone
6) Now app is installed on phone just as if you installed it normally and you can change your Titanium Backup restore location back to default

Try to clear cache and data from the store.
Easy, uninstall the app first, then go /data, search the app name, like "titanium" or the package name, sth like com.xxxxxx.xxx, should have that name.odex or any other, delete it, but make sure its correct name of coz, after u deleted the file in /data, u can install it again
But yea, like the above user say, it usually appear in crack app, if so, do the purchase mate

+1 Emprize
You must have some leftover file for previous installation, serch and delete of that will allow to install again.
I had this problem the other day trying to install apps with titanium backup and the play store, both were getting this error. I fixed it the same way by going into the data/app folder and deleteing the .odex files in there. I had two in my folder, one was 'com.kermidas.TitaniumBackup-1.odex' and i cant remember what the other one was. I think when an app is uninstalled or modified, it sometimes leaves a .odex residue file which causes the error.
Here is a simple SOLUTION :-
Install lucky patcher now press the menu key
Choose troubleshooting now click on removes fixes and backup now u can install the application

Titanium Backup not reading

I've been a biff!
after formatting my external sdcard like a fool i lost my most recent titanium backup. I have an old one that i uploaded to Dropbox so i was ok.
However now since i put on a new rom (Barbones 240dpi) and reinstalled Titanium Pro it wont pick up all the apps. some are shown but not all. i have restored previous id but still wont show all the apps. i have looked in the folder and apps are showing in there.
please help
Go to preferences in titanium and select choose backup location. Then let it scan your entire phone for backups.
This might help hopefully.

Use “automatic clean up"
It's great for finding apps you thought had gone. I found 42 with it, when all else failed.
Hope it helps.
