Camera button intermittently works - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Xperia z1 went in for repairs (power button became spongy) and they replaced almost everything. New screen, camera internals.
Now, the dedicated camera button seems to be playing up. It doesn't register presses each time. No matter how hard I press, often it won't wake the camera. I wait a few seconds and it will work. This doesn't happen all the time, though, I'd say about 50%.
Anyone had this problem? Here in the Netherlands, if you send your phone back with a fault and they can't replicate, they charge you. Hesitant to send it back but I am quite disappointed.
Thanks all.

Hi
I had a similar problem which was very frustrating on a recent holiday. I found out if I turned the phone off with the power button when the camera program was running the camera button did not work. If I closed the camera program down before turning the power off, the camera button worked as expected. Hope that makes sense!

I have just tried the camera button and it works all the time. I have just upgraded with the .290 firmware maybe this has cured the bug.

I'm on a stock .136 firmware, and I just noticed the same problem yesterday.
Sometines the camera button would wake the phone, sometimes it wouldn't. It used to work all the time when I was on the .534 firmware, and I don't remember trying with the .290 one. When the phone is on the charger dock, the button works just fine with the current firmware though.
All I needed to reproduce this weird behavior is to take the phone off the dock, turn the screen off and wait a few seconds (5 seconds was enough).
But right now, it's working just fine.

same here, i suspect it has something to do with deep sleep because if i try to take my phone using the camera button after after locking it it wakes up just fine.
but after 30 minutes or so in my pocket it whouldn't wake by the camera button.

[Q] Galaxy Camera Problems

Doesn't seem to be much in here about problems with the camera. The editing function quite regularly locks up - and for reasons beyond me they keep the results of edits in a separate folder with no apparent way to change this. Also if you install Google Googles it crashes. Has anyone come across this?
Google Goggles working absolutely fine on my camera.
And as for problems, I haven't encountered any yet.

No problems here!!!!
Just wonder if anyone else encounter this issue.
I switch my SGC off (by pressing the power button) and put it in the case. A few hours later when I try to switch on by pressing the per button, there is no response until I press and hold the power button then the display turns on. However it shows the startup pictures and then a message stating sd card had been found and if I want to change the location to sd card etc. It seem that the camera had been rebooted. Anyone faces this issue? Is it got to do with me switching of 3G?

Same thing happens to me. The power issue I think happens because of a auto-shutdown feature of the camera, if you pay attention, you will hear the power off sound when you leave the camera on (screen off) for a while. The SD card issue I thnik happens every time the camera shuts down and is turned back on.

In the power panel in settings there is a setting for auto power off and for a fast power on feature. What you've experienced is both of those features in action.
action freeze
Hey I would like to ask for you folks if your galaxy camera works well in action freeze. Mine was very dark when using action freeze. Every stock non rooted galaxy camera. Thank you very much.

[Q] Blank screen, no lights, non-responsive and appears dead but...

I've had my Xperia Z for 2 weeks and have been happy with it so far. However, I has cause for concern last night when I found it "dead". About an hour prior, I checked to see how much power it still had in order to decide whether to connect it to the charger. I found it still had 76% so decided that I didn't need to. Then an hour later I picked up my phone and found pressing the Power button had no response. It just had a black screen and no lights. I held down the Power button thinking it might have just powered off but also no response. I then connected the charger and waited and holding down the Power button also nothing happened. It just was dead. On previous Android phones I would try taking the battery out but of course couldn't do that with the Xperia Z. It has not been dropped at all and not been rooted so I got worried that it had died within 2 weeks of very little use. I looked online and found someone had a similar problem with an older Xperia (T or maybe U) and they managed to switch their phone back on by holding down the Power and Volume buttons. I tried this and lucky my Xperia Z came back on.
My question is, has anyone here had a similar experience? Or know what could possible have caused it. So far it's been fine today but I am somewhat concerned that it has happened and that it could well happen again. I bought it online from the Three UK website as a PAYG phone. Do you think I should contact them for a replacement or do you think this is a problem with all Xperia Z's or it's firmware.
Thank you.
Hope it's a one-off issue.. Get a replacement it were to happen a few more times again, especially since you're running unrooted on stock! You could try re flashing your firmware using seus to see if that solves your problem, if it's corruption on the firmware/nand side, especially since such sleep of death cases on the xperia z isn't common on the xperia z as of now.
it happens for android phones often
but thr s no absolute dead for xperia phones like wht happen for galaxies.
anyway if u have warranty as u know don worry and change it

Volume up+power for 10 seconds.

Yes held down Power button and Volume up until the phone responded with a vibration and then it proceeded to boot up. Yes i am on stock. Nothing modified at all. I don't know whether to be relieved it is a known issue albeit on an older model Xperia or concerned that despite this is Sony's latest flagship device they didn't fix it before release!

Screen or backlight doesn't turn back on

looks like i got a lemon, screen will not turn back on however device continues to function. The touchscreen even works but you can't tell what you are clicking on.
Only way to get back to functional is to pull the battery, only happened once last week but in the last two days i've had to pull it 6 times or so.
Just posting this up in case someone else starts having the same problem. I've got a replacement being shipped out this week.

I might have had this happen last night. Black screen, buttons lights would only flicker once quickly when pressing the power button. Pressing and holding the power button did not cause a reboot. I did not try any screen action as I could not see anything. Had to pop the battery to get the device back to working.

I got my replacement, and it still does seem to have this bug to some extent, however, this phone seems to be able to get out of the screen black if something else triggers it.
For instance, I got a phone call, and that brought it out of the black-out. Another time i just kept pushing buttons and it finally woke up.
Hopefully it's just a software bug??

[Q] Power button is not locking/turning off screen but works to bring up power menu.

So this morning I picked up my Note 4, used it normally to check emails, etc, went to turn off/lock screen and it wouldn't respond at all. I held down the power button and then it brings up the power menu, I restarted a few times and still nothing. Is my power button defective or could some setting have automatically changed the settings?
Go to *#0*# and select Sub-Key. Press every physical button on the Note 4 one by one (Volume Up, Volume Down, Home Button, Power Button On, Power Button Off). If the end result is PASS, then you're Power button is fine. Can also be a sticky / tacky power button, or something you modded in the settings.

Just did the test, every button turned a different color, volume up (gray) volume down (green), menu (brown), home (blue) back (purple) , power (red, is this a fail?) but I didnt get any PASS. Is the power button supposed to have 2 colors, one for on and one for off? I tried holding down the power button but that brings up the power menu.
Also noticed that the screen will not dim or turn off automatically.
Update: I ended up doing a reinstall of the stock fw through Odin and it fixed it. I wonder what caused it and where those settings/issue where stored? I had tried doing a reset from within settings, but as I understand, that doesn't clear ALL the data.
I know how it feels when the diagnostic doesn't yield a pass. Glad to hear that reflashing the stock firmware resolved it though. Could have been something deep in the firmware causing this. Keep us updated if it persists again. The power button has been a culprit of problems in the past for many as well in previous Note devices. The final result should have displayed "PASS" on the display, perhaps you didn't complete the task, that's okay. Sometimes simply clearing the cache instead of factory reset could have resolved the problem as well. Samsung is notorious time to time.

I have a Note 4 too and since a few days I have been noticing this issue. The power button doesn't wake the screen up. I have to fiddle around the button a little bit, press it a bit harder sometimes and then it works.
Also noticed that when this happens, I unlock the phone using the Home button and when I try to use the power button then nothing happens. Keeping the power button pressed doesn't give me the reboot/boot options either until I fiddle with it.
The strange this is, one it starts working, i can use it again and again until I leave the phone aside until sometime and then the power button does nothing until i repeat fiddling it.

Also ran the test : *#0*# and select Sub-Key
All buttons work except the power button but again if I press hard and try to nudge the button a little bit, I saw the colour change to RED. No PASS either.
Do you have any xposed modules installed? I had this happen with either gravitybox or wanam when I tried to tinker with the power menus. *3.
No. Everything is stock and not rooted either.
In my case, a complete wipe to factory fixed the issue for me and never had the issue since then, but it kind of sounds like you may have a hardware issue.
that's what I'm thinking too hw issue. But once it starts to work it works perfectly even pressing the button lightly. If the phone's been idle for a while that's when it starts. But anyway, I'll do the basics, factory reset and then bring it over to the carrier shop. Hate to send it away as its not that long ago i got the phone.
Thanks for all the help/comments.
I just started having the same problem myself. I think I'm going good to buy the right now. For the power button and have it installed.

I am having the exact same problem , did you manage to solve it ?
No. But I've been using the phone less as in on holidays and noticed it hadn't been happening much. If issue still persists I'll bring the phone back to the carrier for a repair/replacement as it's still under warranty.
For the first few days power button worked occasionally now it has stopped working completely.

The working of button changes with temperature. With a little heating with hair dryer the button started working.

I agree with the temperature because when I was in holidays the issue didn't happen and Iwas in a hot country with 35 deg C. Weird, so was my Note 4 built for Middle East?!?
My power button has started working 100% normal from falling the hw test earlier.

I did a full factory reset and it appeared to work but after restoring all my apps and using it for a couple of days it started again. Brought it to the carrier to get it fixed as is still under warranty. They said it was a faulty "electrical component" which they replaced. Got the phone back and I restored all the apps. I have the problem again. I don't trust the carrier to have fixed the issue as it was intermitten in the first place. The button works continuously once it's stays working until I leave it aside for a while. I'll have to bring it back again and wait for a week!
I'll keep you posted.
^ blow some hot air with a hair dryer
My note 4 problem is whenever I remove the charger it went out and behave as it wants to start up and as soon as I replaced the charger I can turn it on and it stays on. Someone please help me with this

Mi A2 power button suddenly not working and No Command

Hey guys. I own a Mi A2 since November without any issues. But this morning, suddenly the power button is not working. I thought something is wrong with the switch, but when i double tap it, it takes me to camera app (short cut button) which explain the button works fine, but i cant turn off the LCD/lock the screen. Then I restart the phone by long pressing the power button and it resets, but then after Android One logo, a "No Command" pop up on the screen. As I'm confused, i long press the power button again, and it's restarting just fine. Is there something wrong? I am not modifying/installing/routing the phone at all. Well I'm just curious what happened as it's really worrying me. Thanks!
Same issue
I have the EXACT same problem, plus my volume up button doesn't work, and sometimes the system randomly increases the volume. I was wondering if you have found a solution to this problem and would like to share it with me, I hope you'll see this and respond to it.
Thank you very much in advance.

Your problem is different ..if volume is increasing by itself it means your button is physically getting stuck ..
Open your device and check if something is putting pressure on the buttons or making them getting stuck
