Hi,
I do have few perplessity about rom and android phone in general.
I have to say that I mainly had only HTC android phone (I tried the S3 but I sold it after 3 weeks, couldn't stand many things of it) and I'm somewhat quite disappointed about the wifi (of android in general and of non sense rom in particular).
Right now I'm working on a cruise ship and the wifi connection here is REALLY bad BUT I noticed few things:
1) from the same place people with iphone are using skype with video call (not the best ever but still working), with my HTC ONE I've problems loading facebook and checking email because the connectin seems SO slow (but than why ipohne user can do skype?!?!?!)
2) With any sense rom all works more or less fine BUT with 3 different non sense roms I tried I have the following "connection problems":
2a) this wifi is like an internet cafe so i need to login...surfing the net sometimes (often actually) the internet connection stops, I've to disable the wifi of my phone and turn it on again to make the internet connection works again (I don't have to login again to the internet cafe login page, just need to turn off and on the wifi module) -- with the sense rom I tried I didn't have this problem or it didn't happen so often like with the non sense rom I tried
2b) it seems that the non sense rom catch less signal, maybe it's just a feeling but from my cabin I had with a sense rom 3/4 line of signal with a non sense rom 1/2 line
So mainly what I would like to ask is:
1) Is it possible that iphone has better wifi and in a way or another is able to drain more band than an android phone? And if so, is there something to install/do to make the android phone works like the iphone?
2) Is it possible that non sense rom use different module for the wifi that in some way decrease the efficency of it? If so is there a way to install the sense wifi apk on a non sense one or is there any way to optimizing the wifi?
3) How is it possible that I loose the internet connection of the wifi in here (things that doesn't happen with my laptop and that happen not so often with a sense rom) and is there a way to fix it/boost the wifi ??
Thanks for your advice,
Massimiliano

Most here will not admit it but the iPhone is a very refined device with very good service both wifi and network. I had the iPhone 3gs and 4s for nearly 5 years and changing to the HTC One took some getting use too. I'm not sure if it's the quality of the components used or just a better antenna system, but yes the iPhone is very good at both. I'm by no means unhappy with the One but it was a noticeable change when it come to signals. That said I'll still never own another iPhone ..lol

Hi! I hope to write in the right area, but if not I ask someone to move my post in the right one.
Now I have a HTC Diamond device, but I've to change it for a GalaxyS or an iPhone4.
I would like to buy a GalaxyS device, but I read many posts about bugs, lags, gps problems, so I wonder if it is a great choice this GalaxyS.
I like android and all the development opportunities around it (thanks to XDA), but it seems to be not so stable yet...
I flashed many ROMS on my Diamond in the past, so it's not a problem to do the same for my GalaxyS, but problems are fixed? The GPS works fine? Maybe not...
Maybe with Froyo 2.2?
iPhone4 is not so open as an Android device, but it's a very stable device!
What do you think about?
coming from a winmo background you're gonna love the galaxy s! its miles ahead in terms of refinements, polish and brilliant integration. The GPS problems are nothing so critical...its more of a sw fix im guessing. I live in India, and i have ZERO problems on my GPS....i feel the bug is something country/carrier specific.
there are many things to love and obsess with the galaxy s....go get yourself one, you sure wont regret it
While I'd love to echo what dreamtheater39 has said, I can't. It's a brilliant phone, but after having mine for just under a month, it's starting to lag like crazy, and in the last two days I've had a ton of dropped calls and the phone has switched itself off/crashed three times in the last few hours resulting in data loss because the power button doesn't respond (forcing me to hard-reset the phone).
All I can say is that, if you do get one, have an open mind. And make sure you don't get locked into a lengthy contract in case things do go awry.
same here GPS working great since day 1

Maybe I got a lemon
Maybe I got a lemon but I can not stand the i9000. I have 4 bugs that drive me crazy.
1. Market Place hangs at starting download. I have to do a factory reset to download an update an app.
2. GPS just stops working or it puts you on a different street when you are using navigation. The worst part is then it has to recalculate the directions twice, once for the wrong location and then again for the correct location, which is a real pain in the pocketbook when you are rooming.
3. Receives invalided cert from a hotspot connects the 1st time then never again. So I cannot use my hotspot at work, my old iphone connects no problem.
4. Does not always switch between wifi and mobile network. Have to go to airplane mode and back to get 3G network. (I tried changing the wifi sleep settings)
Mmmm...so maybe it's a good device, but I understand that who had an iPhone before it seems to be a step backward...is it?
Hello every one.
I'm the proud user of a HTC Touch Diamond. It has served me well since day one, and now i want to make it even better.
I need the phone to work. And i need Android (read: want). So i'm asking everyone which version do you find more stable. What i need:
Phone. Must work. Must work well. Cannot wait 20 seconds for the device to wake up (while ringing) to show me who's calling me. When i decide to pick up, the other guy gives up, or the call os forwarded to voice mail.
Wifi is a must, that sim has no data plan.
Battery, though superficial due to a 2400mAh bat, it takes alot of calls and sms's.
Market. Must work.
Camera is a bonus, helps here and there.
The rest is rest. i don't need bluetooth, GPS, or anything like that. Anything from 2.1 forward is enough. So... i'm open to suggestions.
I did this same question of the kaiser section, and was greeted with 2 very stable versions. One Eclair and one Froyo.
froyo b ver 6
it is very stable
and the 3d performance is better than the old version
url http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970476
I'm getting 21FPS (diam100) and 20.2FPS (raph100) with NeoCore with no overclock and camera+camcoder works great
I'm currently using that one.
Though "snappy", its quite slow. Market is a pain. (Wifi)
Takes too much time to wakeup and show the screen (i actually have to unlock to see the screen).
Looking for something else maybe. 3D isn't a must.
I've got three different Android ROMs form different developers and the fastets and most stable ROM would be http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=907509
additions like camera or WiFi works fine for me.
Just a question to all the Kaiser users out there.
Do you use the Kaiser with only Android installed as your main phone?
Those that do, have you had any "bad" experiences while using the phone that are NOT caused by network discrepancies (i.e.: dropped calls, bad signal, etc.)?
I ask because I do use mine as my main form of communication on a daily basis, and I had my first dropped call today due to a hard lock. This is after almost a year of use, on the same phone, in different parts of the country with only a couple of days of non-use for screen replacement (scratched/damaged touchscreen).
I know we're all hanging on to old technology for different reasons, wether it be cost, availability, or that certain "wow" factor that comes from completely changing something that was never meant to be changed. I have become fond of my Kaisers for obvious reasons, but if I cannot trust it when I need it I may need to move on.
Thoughts?
I use it as the main phone . I dont have any problems except the camera and the WiFi . Hope to get it rectified soon though :/

Man, you still didn't manage to get WiFi to work ?
Dude my kernel !!
and because of exams i cant get that repaired !!
IDK if your kernel is the issue or not because the radio rom also has a lot to do with some aspects of the hardware controls (phone, wifi, audio, camera, etc.).
Other than checking your wifi.ko file with root explorer or some other text viewer, the only option is to change your rom. I have had a 99% success rate with my Kaiser using only Scoots kernel with 25mb of cache, the 8/29/11 rom from sourceforge and LauncherPro plus (from my personal stash). I have the kernel setting the clock to 500MHz on start up and I usually end up underclocking to 480 for a week or so to check stability against the previous weeks settings.
My camera works, my wifi works, bluetooth works, tethering/hot spot works, but video doesn't (not like I'll EVER use this thing for videos)...

Hi!
I use it as my main phone. After the imap push deactivation i hadn't got any hard lock.
But i use gmail sync, and sometimes i got a screen of death. But it's very very rare (maybe one in a month). I think if i didn't use anything thats related to 3G network, this lock up wouldn't appear.
This is my work phone so it must be stable. I'm satisfied with it.
So chances are you haven't seen me, I'm relatively new to the N1 forums, but not new to hacking/modding (had an Evo 3D before this). I just grabbed this off of Gazelle for a fair price, and supposedly it was fully working.
The N1 had come rooted and running OxygeN1 ROM and everything worked perfectly fine, except for the fact that it doesn't seem to want to find any wifi signals.
Now I'm in the process of selling my Evo 3D, but I haven't sold it yet, and it still connects to wifi (shows I have a valid signal, two bars, etc.), however when I turn wifi on my shiny semi new N1, it supposedly scans, but doesn't pick up the fact that there are any wifi signals around. This is a bit problematic, as the SIM card I bought for it is still being shipped. In other words, when my 3D is gone I'll essentially be without a phone until I can activate it on T-Mobile.
So I suppose the main point of this is, why isn't my N1 connecting to wifi? Any ideas? (router is a,b,g,n compatible by the way, so it can't be that it only fires off "n" signals)
Or perhaps a method to revert it back to 100% stock to see if it works on that?

Have you tried to flash a different ROM or reboot your router? Or tried the WifiFix app?
I've tried the router one, I have not yet flashed another ROM (I'd like to learn a bit more about the device first) although I have done a factory reset.
I have not however, tried the wifix app... I'll have to try that.
EDIT: I tried Wifi Fixer, but it still wouldn't connect.
EDIT2: Just tried this ROM, and it still won't connect. Any other ideas?
I have just received a new galaxy S5 so i would like to turn my old S3 into an ipod touch like mp3 player.
The only functionality required is a long battery life, the ability to play music from internal storage, home server and internet (via wifi only, no cellular connection will be available so i would also like to remove all of the apps associated with calling, messaging etc.)
Dose anyone have any recommendations for Firmware, Kernels and Apps to help me achieve this.
I am currently running SlimKat 4.4.2 Build 4.8.
I have found a mod to disable Cell services and remove the associated apk's, I will be testing it out shortly.
What it does:
Removes unnecessary apps (Messaging.apk, Phone.apk, TelephonyProvider.apk, Mms.apk, TelocationProvider.apk)
Completely turns off cell radio on bootup
Installs the radiooptions binary in case your ROM does not include it
Prevents emergency calls and 911 calls (good for giving your kids your old phone to play with)
Unfortunatly i can't post links but the mod is on rootzwiki [MOD]Any phone, any ROM: Wi-Fi only mode (disable cell radio)

Why don't you resell it, buy an actual ipod and get some extra cash??

The phone was found on the side of a major highway with a cracked screen and has had the IMEI blocked, so its not really worth selling it.
I was just trying to make as much use of it as i could.
Oh, fair enough. What about Airplane mode and then activate WiFi? After that you can activate the power saving mode on CM 11. I have 0 experience with kernels for this phone so I'm doing my research atm (That's why I found this thread on the first place).
Also, right now I'm looking at the Sound Mod AC!D Audio Technology maybe you're interested in this too, I don't know how this mod affects battery life as I haven't tried yet but it is supposed to increase the sound quality by A LOT.
This is all new to me as well this is my first attempt at modding anything android (apart from installing pre-made roms, etc)
Thanks for the sound mod ill give it a test run.
Flight mode works to a point, while the phone is in Flight mode the cell radio is still active and searching for emergency signal therefore still using battery (as can be seen in battery stats as cell standby).
Because my phone is IMEI blocked and i always have my S5 with me i have no need for the emergency signal on this device so i would like to find a way to totally disable the cell radio. I just had the thought of taking the rom from a tablet device that has no cell radio to begin with and see if that works on the s3.

No it doesn't The only ones that did that were some Nokias. Try this, set network to GPRS/2G only, and then enable airplane mode. Remember the i9305 has a external modem due to the 4G, made by qualcomm.
