Viral updated with Chromecast support. - Google Chromecast

Just in case anyone is interested. I know you can use YouTube, but there are more flexibilty with Viral. You can set specific resolution for the videos. And you can log in using web login so you only your YouTube account is logged into the app, instead of having to log your Google account into the entire phone.
There are some bugs in this early Chromecast version though.

[Q] Youtube and Picasa issues

I came across a weird error tonight on my Vivid.
I was initially unable to upload any videos to Youtube. I cleared data and logged into the app again several times with no success. Several google searches led me to a solution that basically required me to log in with my youtube username, rather than my google account that was already configured on the phone. However, the most recent youtube app wouldn't allow you to log in with anything other than a google account, so I had to roll back the update. Finally I was able to log in with my youtube username and password.
Now I can upload videos, but when I go to the gallery and switch to just my Picasa albums, I get a sign-in error for my Youtube account. And no matter what I do, I can't upload any pictures to my Picasa account. My albums list won't populate in the uploader drop-down.
This is completely retarded. Basically my google services won't work together on my Android phone and all of my accounts are linked. Seriously? Anyone else having this issue?
TL;DR version: Can only upload to youtube if signed into older version of app with youtube username/password. Can't upload to native Picasa at all (Picasa tool app works). Get sign-in error for Youtube account when I try to view my Picasa albums.

Chromecast - anyone working on a way to play local videos?

Hey guys, I wanted to see who all here has picked up a chrome cast and what your thoughts are on it so far?
I really dig it, quick connection and ability to play things with no noticeable degradation or lag. And with HBO Go and Hulu Plus both coming soon it is going to be really nice.
One issue though that I have found is that the previous version of Google Play Movies allowed you to play locally stored videos on your device through the app. With the update to work with Chromecast this option is removed even when trying to do it on your device only so you have to use an external app such as the gallery or MX player etc.
Any word or people working on creating a cracked version of google movies or a work around to allow other apps to chromecast?

Koush has wrote a chromecast app just for that actually but due to he developer agreement with chromecast he cannot release the apk.

That is pretty slick and works for home made videos (although obviously he isn't releasing it at the moment) but as is it also wouldn't solve the problem of being able to fling other movies you have to the TV.
IE I own a digital copy of Ironman and have it on my tablet, before the google movie app would play it internally. With the update to enable chromecast it no longer shows up to even be played on the phone through the app, let alone fling it to the TV.

Chromecast and Dropbox

Is this ever likely to happen as it'd be pretty cool to be able to cast photos and videos stored on your dropbox account? Also while I'm at it Google Drive could with a cast option too.
both situation are likely to happen. it's just a matter of time.
keep in mind, Chromecast came out in July with only YouTube, Google Play Movies/Music, and Netflix support.
then in the beginning of October, Hulu+ was the first service to officially receive support.

Hi,
I am able to play a youtube live video with subscription(WillowTV) in chrome browser. But when i try to play it in chromecast it doesn't load. The TV screen shows it tries to play but shows back youtube standby screen. how can i play this in Chromecast?
Note: Casting a tab is not the option i'm looking for.

This brings us an interesting question...
Does Chromecast "inherit" YouTube login credentials?
I don't think it does... I think your phone/tablet/Chrome just takes the YouTube link and sends it to Chromecast.
Thus, if the link requires some authentication at the YouTube account level, then it probably gets stuck.
What do you get in Chrome if you log out of YouTube then try to load the same page?

Ahh, I just came up with a test case... You can set a YouTube video to be private based on account. Going to try that in a bit.
---------- Post added at 04:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:30 PM ----------
Okay, here's what I did...
Uploaded video
Set video to Private
Opened YouTube on phone
Went to Uplaods
Video plays OK on phone
Cast video to Chromecast
Get message on phone: "This video is private and can not be played on name of Chromecast
This seems to confirm that Chromecast does not "log in as you" for YouTube, and therefore probably won't be able to play other restricted-access videos shared with your Google+/YouTube account.
I'm not sure how WillowTV handles the access restrictions, but I'm guessing when your subscription is active they set it so your Google+/YouTube account has access to their channel. If that's the case, it's likely not going to work for Chromecast until Google changes things. It'd be good to put in a support ticket with Google on this so they can either fix it or make it better known that private videos can't be casted.
Oh... They already do...

Some videos may not play using Chromecast. Private videos, live content, and videos not approved for mobile playback will not work with Chromecast.

Hello friends! Today I found something strange: I tried to cast a certain video and Chromecast says it is not available for casting. The video runs on my Nexus devices and I used to watch it on TV via Chromecast. Never had an issue so far. The video is Epic Rapbattles of history season 3 Hitler vs Vader. Is Google trying to prevent playing certain videos?

Correcting myself a bit here, there's another Chromecast support article which deals with paid content in general:
https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/3285407
It says paid (YouTube) channels should work, but live events are currently not supported.

I got "This video is not available on your TV" Plays fine on my phone though.
Must be some attribute or setting on the video...

Thanks for trying! The video was playing fine though days ago and it's old so I don't think the uploader changed anything... Maybe it's just a bug in the new YouTube app.

[Q] 18+ video from youtube app on tablet

I have just received my chromecast and it works quite nicely. However some videos cannot be casted from the youtube app on my nexus 7. They are all videos that have been flagged for mature content. For instance some music videos. I get an error saying the video is not available for my tv.
However, I can cast those same videos from my laptop.
Does anyone know whats going on here?

Since Chromecast gets video on its own, there are limits on how the YouTube login gets passed.
Google's support article doesn't seem to mention restrictions on 18+ content, but like I said, what Chromecast can access isn't the same as what a full, normal YouTube login can.

You don't need the App for YouTube to cast to the CCast. Try using the browser and using the Cast button on the Video itself instead of going via the App. This works with both Netflix and YouTube. No need to use Google Cast in a browser or the Android App to send their content to a CCast.
You might have better luck sending the content FROM You Tube than from the App that tells the CCast to go and get that content.Their code is likely to be a bit more up to date on sending than the Apps are.
You say you are casting from a Laptop but did not mention via what method your using so apologies if your already doing it the way I suggested.

I would think an account is an account and the info about that account is stored on the google side. So it should be the same on all devices that use that login.
I would more believe that the player that the Android App sends to retrieve does not have the ability to play 18+ content natively. Or by default has 18+ restrictions set on by default in the app if that was what is going on.

Yeah, I Want to Believe but if the account login seamlessly transferred with the Chromecast handoff somehow, then live events would work, and we wouldn't have those random videos that say "Not available for your TV" (unless perhaps there's some backlog of transcoding required, like when they initially launched the mobile/MP4 site).

On my laptop I am casting directly from the youtube video. I am not casting the tab as I don't have enough CPU.

I think the difference is between how the youtube android app and how youtube on my laptop pass login details. It is the only way the laptop works and the android app doesn't.

Well your account is your account...
Unless your using a different account on the Android App than you are on the Laptop there should be no difference because if Account is important then all anything is telling Yahoo is what the userass is....
It may however be tat the Android app isn't sending or using ANY account at all...
Thats the only way I see account being at fault here.

I agree, I don't believe the youtube app is providing authentication. I am using the same login. I hope they fix this.
