HI all,
My Xperia Z is running 10.3.1.A.2.67 stock ROM.
An app I was trying to run has some mechanism to prevent running on rooted devices. I read somewhere and tried to circumvent this by renaming the /system/xbin folder. What I didn't realise is that cause my phone to lose root, i.e. SuperSU says "There is no SU binary installed..."
Now I tried to re-root using all the tools I could find (Doomlord, cubeundcube, Goroh_kun) but they all encountered a similar problem: /system/xbin/su: cannot open for write: No such file or directory. It seems that all the tools can't write file to the /system directory.
I also tried the unroot tool from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460, but it threw an error as well.
Can anyone shed some light into what's causing this, and how can I fix it?
Thank you all
Flash official 4.2 ftf of your region. Use easy rooting method of general section. If your bootloader is locked, and only then, update via ota to 4.3

Thank you very much! I've flashed the official firmware and now my phone is back in the original state before I messed things up. I used the cubeundcube method from Bin4ry script in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460.
I haven't updated to 4.3 yet because last time I read, the only way to root 4.3 is to unlock the bootloader. My bootloader is still locked, because I didn't want to mess with the DRM stuff when I got the phone. This understanding could be outdated.
It seems that I can keep root through the OTA process? Is there anything I should do to ensure I can get root after 4.3? Would Bin4ry's script allow it?
Thanks again
If I remember correctly you should keep root while updating ota

I have an unlocked CA C6906 currently fully rooted running .290 & Doomkernel V6. If I do an update to 14.2.A.1.136 via PCC in its current state will this cause any issues or lost data? Should I re-flash the stock kernel before attempting the update?
Thanks!
Why don't you use nut's flashable 136 over in Android development? Backup your data and restore afterwards

You cannot update your phone via PCC if the bootloader is unlocked..you have to use flashtool to update it or else if you've taken a TA backup then, restore it to relock the bootloader and then you can go ahead and update it via PCC..if not then you only have an option to update it via flashtool
Hit thanks if I have helped you..

Thanks to both of you for your replies, very helpful. I didn't know about NUT's image - looking at that now. Otherwise I may just wait & wipe when the 4.4 firmware comes out.
In the case you will want to Relock your Bootlader do not do that on Custom Kernel like Doomkernel because you will brick your phone. First flash stock then relock.
i know what you're thinking.. if youre asking for help you probably shouldn't be playing around with this stuff.. well, it's just that i've only recently switch from iDevices, to the Xperia Z1, i've only ever had apple products until 5 months ago.
i've searched for hours yet can not find "simple" enough guides for "noobs". i'm not stupid, its just confusing being linked to site after site after site just to find step one.
i'm stock, 14.2.A.1.136, ive read i must root to do TA Backup, i've tried downgrading (to a rootable FW) using flashtool etc, but i just kept getting bootloop (unchecked all boxed and check the "dont verify"?). i cannot flash a rooted 1.136 because you must have unlocked bootloader, & if i do it without ta backup, ill lose my keys..
i guess what i'm asking is if someone can provide the correct way to downgrade to a rootable firmware. what steps do i take in doing it all correctly, as in, downgrading, rooting, flashing cwm, kernals, cyanogenmod etc.
Downgrade to 543 via flashtool, root your device and upgrade it with the method provided by nut

Use .534 FW provided by NUT from Post #3 HERE, then Root with Bin4ry and Install Dual Recovery, then Follow the instruction from HERE to Update directly to .136. When you got Rooted your Phone you can Backup TA First then Unlock Bootloader and then think to install CM. Watch Video Tutorial Hot to Root too.

thanks guys.
if i was wanting to just install cwm & cyanogenmod, is there any need to updated from the rooted .534 to 1.136? or can i just flash them both while on the rooted .534?
i've no access to a computer atm, but will downgrade when i can & click thanks.
EDIT; bootloader unloack bug exists with 4.2, which is why i have to update to 1.136, just remebered that. Aha
I'm using a C6906 on Rogers in Canada, locked bootloader. Currently on the latest 4.2 variant, rooted. I personally don't care about having custom recoveries, modified kernels and all the other bells and whistles that float around these forums.
Is there a root for 4.3 for the Z1 that isn't a cluster**** of downgrading and flashing and what not?
Stock kernel, stock recovery, stock everything.. just a root method so I can use Greenify and TiBu on 4.3?
I know there's 90 other threads on root, and I'm sure someone is going to post the Dual Recovery thread - but please.. as much as most people don't read or search before posting, if you're thinking of posting that thread please re-read the above. I don't want to have custom recoveries and all that other crap.. just root, so the apps that require root work on 4.3.
There is not a Direct Root for 4.3. Sorry for you but if you want a Rooted Android 4.3 FW .136 you have to Downgrade to .534 Root with Bin4ry, then Update directly to Pre-Rooted .136 Provided by NUT. Also I know you don't want Dual Recovery but in this case is very helpful because after all this process you can Backup the entire system and if one day something go wrong with you Android you can Restore it to new. All have his reasons.
Are you on 4.2 or 4.3?
4.2 has direct root methods (vroot, 360root and kingo)
You can try this if you're on 4.3:
Downgrade to 4.2 via flashtool, buy supersu, tick the survival mode and upgrade to 4.3 again.
This can work...
You won't have a recovery.
But as of now: there is no direct way to root 4.3

The purpose of the thread is three-fold:
1) understand why a phone with 4.4 from the factory (not 4.4.2) cannot be downgraded by RSD Lite or motoboot to 4.2.2 with an exception that says "downgraded security" or similar
2) figure out if there is a way to fake whatever is detected during flashing to make it think it is receiving an upgrade and not a downgrade
3) figure out whether it is possible to modify the system

Here's the story so far. I'm trying to get root access on a Z3 compact. I was at the latest Ota firmware as of January 2016. I just unlocked my bootloader (in Linux) and now I guess I'm at the stock ROM that ships with the phone? Android 5.1.1, build 23.4.A.1.200
I have downloaded CM12 nightly, but I'm afraid to flash it. I also have been reading several guides for rooting. Namely, this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/how-to-root-backup-drm-keys-t3013343
Now I have the 23.0.A version downloaded. If I flash that, what next? Run giefroot? But wwherw do I go from there. If I upgrade through Ota updates do I keep root?
Are there any Ota ROMS that are already rooted that I can flash via fastboot? I'm not able to flash things in Windows since win10 won't recognize the fastboot drivers, so I'm using Linux, which I'm more comfortable with anyway
Z3+ not z3 forums here...
