[Wireless charging] Xperia Z1 - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys....
As we all know, Sony is member of Wireless Power Consortiuma*, just like Qualcomm, LG, HTC or IKEA - believe it or not)
So my question is - is there any chance to implement Wireless charging on Z1?
I know there's many solution on ebay (I'm not sure there's for Z1 but still...)
I would like to hear some options from engineers or developer who actually knows something about this subject...
So please don't spam thread if you don't have something smart to say...
Thanks

You can buy an official dock for the Z1 from eBay or Sony, the Z1 has 2 charging pins on the left size

According to UK phone retailer Clove, Sony is implementing Wireless Charging with the WCR12 Wireless Charging Cover for Xperia Z2.
Not sure if they will have something similar for Xperia Z1 or not though.

Awesome! It is Wireless?
@funky0308, I know I should not ask this question here. Sorry. I can't resist!

As I said, there is a dock that wirelessly charges your Z1, TBH, as long as some kind of case was touching those pins, and then the case was conductive, any case would do it

Mate do you even know what's Qi or wireless charging?
That pins you talking about is normal charger, only separate from USB and it's well known for all Z1 users...
I was referring on wireless - Google that and you'll get what I thought

Doesn't that Qi wireless charger require your phone to have a specialised case?

Yes it does.
Sony is releasing a Wireless Charging Cover for Xperia Z2 but not sure if they will have one for Z1 and Z.

It's more cover than case or but yeah...of course.
Base is connected to power source and your device must have other side of that charger/base under battery cover or somewhere else to be able to connect the base.
Only wireless "part" of such charger is connection between device and base.
So you don't need usb or magnetic port for charging anymore...

Sounds far too gimmicky to me, just buy the wireless charging dock, no special cases required

BTW, DK31 is not Wireless.

How is it not wireless? No wires are connected to the phone are they? That's wireless

Do you know what's WiFi?
Something similar is wireless charging, only device (for now) must be in a physical laid on a "charging surface".
Charging with magnetic charger is absolutely the same as a USB. (of course I trivialize all but it's quite clear what I'm talking about) - And that's not wireless charging...
To have dock or cable on magnetic port is absolutely the same...
In one or two words - it's not wireless charging...
If this is wireless charging then hands-free must be only for persons without hands.?!
Now please, as I said in OP, if you don't have anything better to say - plew don't say anything...
This isn't thread where we talk about words and their meaning...

Long rant cut short you're referring to be able to charge without anything touching the phone? Has technology even developed that far yet?
You did make me laugh about hands free though, but by definition wireless means no wires so a dock is still wireless

So...no ports, no dock, no cables...
You have wireless dock and you only put your device on it - just like you would put it on a table and it's charging...

We already established that the Qi requires the phone to be in a special case, I guess the case touches the conductive pins on the side of the device? As I said before, technology for contactless charging doesn't exist yet

Yes, because Z1 is not implemented with that charging system so we have to use a case implemented with it.

Has anyone picked one up yet? Are you waiting for the official one to be released? Thoughts..

The N7's charging slot is flipped around so be careful when purchasing docks that aren't made specifically for the N7.

If anyone gets this dock, let us know if you are able to flip the usb connection around. Also sound quality.
Edit: From the looks of the manual, the usb cord can be moved. This looks like an option. I too would like to see one that makes use of the pogo pins. Soon maybe.

I have to buy it separately too. Nothing more than a plastic with USB connector. No USB cable nor power adapter included. But for a phone like ZR it's necessary.
Absolutely essential if you want to keep this phone waterproof.

Out of stock since quite few days.
And i stay in India so they may not ship here !
Thanks anyway
I have the dock that's meant for the Xperia A in Japan, so there are some Japanese text on it but it still carries the same DK-28 product name.
For those who're interested to know, its input/output is rated 1800 mAh, so it can still guarantee fast charging for all except the 2A chargers (which takes a small hit). The bundled 1.5Ah charger should charge as quick as the direct USB connection.
Guide.

Just so people know, the distance from the edge of the phone frame to the surface of the metal charging strips is much larger in zr than in z. Therefore if you build your own dock, I think the pins should be longer than in the case of Z.

good thing is you don't need to plug micro usb to charge, bad news is unless you spend more $ to buy a very thin shell don't dream you can use the dock with any common shell .
Dialer/phone applications behaviour in DK28 dock
Hi
I'm owner of Sony Xperia Acro S and consider buying Xperia ZR. I'm heavy user and fan of docks - own and use 3 of them for SXAS. I tend to spend lots of time at the desk during phone conversations, phone sits in the dock all the time, BT headset in use. Dock for SXAS is vertical one, while DK28 is landscape one.
A question to Xperia ZR and DK28 owners - what is the dialer (dial pad/contacts) and phone (during actual connection) behaviour when in dock? Does both works in landscape or stupidely remain portrait?

I've been searching for a week for a gear charger. It makes no sense not to be able to get an extra. Maybe even a traveling version.
Would be great to see a desktop watch stand/charger that holds it at 45 degree angle.
Hello,
Try to use original power supply and leftovers from the original charger cradle - or make some adaptation - but be careful not to make any shortcut.
If You see the back back of the watch, with SAMSUNG name visible + is on most right contact (close to "G" letter) minus is second from the left (over the M letter)
see the picture -

You have my total sympathies with this. Its absurd for any brand to issue a device that is totally dependent on one part and have that one part not available to the customers for replacement. What are we supposed to do buy another complete watch. I want one to keep in the car and one for the office. Not a chance in hell. I contacted the importer here and there apparently isn't even a part number that can be given to order stock!
You now have a brick! I despair with such short sightedness on the part of a major brand like Samsung.
Again you have my sympathies.
Kind regards.
Good thing I'm taking good care of the charger. Good to know they not selling extra accessories.

going to be working on making a magnetic charge/sync cable over the next few weeks. Plans are to have the magnets "lock" to the screws on the back of the watch above the existing sync/charge port.
Im more than certain there will be interest in this.

Loose micro USB jack anyone?

Hi, sorry I'm only just getting the hang of the app.
When my Z1 is plugged in, the micro USB feels quite loose inside the port.
I can easily wriggle it around, it does not feel as secure as the lightning port felt in my iPhone 5.
Could I please get some options on this? Is this normal or is mine starting to break?
I do handle the phone a lot while it is plugged in and the port is definitely in an awkward position once it's plugged in...
Sent from my C6903 using xda app-developers app
I don't have problems with USB port but I ordered magnetic charger cable because I will go crazy if I continue with opening those water protection caps every evening just to charge my device.
So... to save and preserve your port I would recommend that cable.
It cost almost nothing on ebay 5-10$ only
Sent from my Z1
Can I just bump this up? Ideally, I would like as many people as possible, nearly all of us own z1's, to just feel how their charging cables sit inside the port when the USB cable is plugged in,
Does it wriggle round a bit? Does it feel very secure?
Mine is somewhat loose in the port and I'd like to know if this is normal or if mine is breaking....

How annoying for me... And for all of us, because I've had my phone 7 weeks and thought it started off firm...
But it's now loose and that is purely from handling the phone while plugged in. It's on a weird location the port... Awkward.
I got an idea it's not very well fitted... It may be just a one off tho,,,

mine too, i guess because using the phone while pluggined. better use magnetic charging
i might have use my micro USB port less than 15 times, most the time its on magnetic cable and its not loose.

Bent xperia Z1 !!!

So.. I've read this topic on other website about a user who found his Z1 bent over a night by itself.. And he claims that "no external force was applied".. Well i didn't believe at first.. I'm an engineer and i know that it's not easy to bend a phone like that not even by heat.. Unless the aluminum reaches the melting point.
After a quick search i found similar topics about user who encountered the same issue.. But i didn't really found any other pictures for a bent Z1 unit but the pictures that the first user posted on the Internet.
So.. Did any of you guys had the same problem? That matter really freaked me out as i bought my unit just a week ago and I'm afread that maybe it's going to be bent like that!

Well.. If the temperature was under the melting point of any metal.. That particular metal may be deformed.. But after the metal is back to the normal temperature.. It bounces back to it's original shape.. So i thought maybe the aluminum was made by some bad forging or something like that.. I know it's highly unlikely but the pictures and the discussions were terrifying

Maybe.. But the strange thing is, even if it's caused by those reasons, or by applying external force "which is most likely" the glass didn't break! And the metal is terribly deformed.

No but seriously I've never heard of anyone bending there phone ever! PLastic phones, metal, alumium, glass etc. not a single time.
i have my z1 since decembeter and belive me i've tried heating it up as best as i could! 3 hours of asphalt 8 a day for weeks... it doesn't get any hotter than that and yet the phone don't bend! so you can rule out the temperature effects...
my theory is that it's just bad manufacturing proccess and the aluminum frame has inner forces that wants to relive itself and bend... only happend in few rare cases.
The reason for bent phones, is in fact quite simple...
- and allmost allways the same...
Just like any other bent phone, eg. the iphone, the Z1 really donĀ“t like to be in a rear pocket at all.
The force from your wight, when you (accidently) sit on a chair is more than enough to bent the phone...
Actually if you have tight pants, and have it in the front pocket, that might also bent the phone when you sit down...
These things might not bent it enough for you to notise the first few times, but then one day you notise it...
Nothing strange in that at all...
- just look at how people use the product...

It is possible for a metal to bend under its own material stress if it has not been machined properly but it only happens in rare cases. My experience with my z1 is a good one, I have accidentally dropped it many times on various surfaces and even my Japanese akita has stood on it! yet it's still in perfect working condition so I don't see how some z1's are bending without intervention.

Wow that looks so odd, this guy is either lying about something or something is really odd and I mean REALLY ODD!
I would've expected something of this happening if it was warm and in your pocket while you were biking for example but the guy said he didn't touch which makes that hypothesis incorrect.
I think warranty would protect that because the phone is not suppose to bend by itself!
I still think something smells a bit fishy about his story!
