Rooting the Z1 - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm not new to this game, I used to have an S3 & S4 but I am new to rooting the Z1, I've read about losing the Bravia Engine and DRM keys by rooting, but in basic terms, what does that actually mean?
Sent from my C6903 using xda app-developers app

You lose the keys only when you unlock the bootloader

How can I tell if my boot loader is already unlocked? And what does losing the keys mean? What will it stop me doing?
Sent from my C6903 using xda app-developers app

From my knowledge If you lose your keys you won't be able to use Sony services like music unlimited etc and I think you can't play aac files ...Bravia engine is just an image and video enhancer...like X reality...most z1's if not all come with locked bootloader specially if you got it from a carrier...and btw u don't need to unlock your bootloader to get root...there is a video around here and a few guides so go and have a look...have fun

Mine isn't from a carrier, its factory unlocked

TO CHECK IF BOOTLOADER IS UNLOCKED:
Dial *#*#7378423#*#* and goto service info / configuration
if the last line says
bootloader unlocked: Yes
Then its unlocked
if it says
bootloader unlocked allowed: Yes
then it is locked but you can unlock it
if it says
bootloader unlock allowed: No
then you cannot unlock it
LOSING DRM KEYS
DRM stands for "Digital Rights Management", and mainly is used with sold eBooks/PDFs and the like (and also for sold music files plus maybe even videos). Those keys are to identify your ID as to prove if you have permission to access those documents.
Losing these on your device means NO:
X-Reality - if you cant tell whether this is on or off/ it takes effort to tell them you probably don't need that (you can get this back using a mod in the development section)
BIONZ- makes photos look better, but its not that bad unless you're OCD about pictures.
More GRAINY IMAGES - maybe because of loss of BIONZ? I don't know but tbh its not that bad and images are still good to me.
Download Music Info - it works for me but some say it doesn't may be it works because of the X-Reality mod? someone can correct me if Im wrong.
And other stuff you probably wont notice cause i and many others haven't. it really depends on you but from my experience life is a lot more fun with unlocked bootloader.
REMEMBER GETTING OUT OF PRISON MEANS NO FREE FOOD OR BED BUT YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE A WHOLE NEW WORLD. DONT WORRY, IF YOU WANT TO GO BACK TO PRISON YOU CAN ALWAYS COMMIT A CRIME.
Bro =>downgrade =>root =>Back up TA =>upgrade to 4.3 => Unlock bootloader => ROOT => Custom kernel=> have FUN!

Wow that's great, thanks for all the info, so even of I root andflash a custom ROM, going back to stock means I get the DRM keys back?

Can not unlock the boot loader but u can root it, best thing is sell it when get it as new (dont open it) then buy a sim free one from phones 4 u
Mine is vodafone as well mate, bootloader can be unlocked. I've left mine locked as root is available. Didn't want to lose BE etc.

How can it be unlocked if its locked?
How did you root it locked? Also what's BE. I'm new to Sony devices lol
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
bravia engine, u can root it without unlocking the boot loader but on yours the boot loader will be locked,
type in *#*#service#*#* then look service info then configuration look at bottom will say if it can be unlocked
Is BE a big loss do you notice it gone?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
i got mine from vodafone and out of the box the bootloader unlock allowed value was yes, however after flashing to uk generic, then rooting it has changed to no, i think this happened during root.
I'm sure I've read on here that it should go back to yes if you unroot and go back to stock.
Sent from my C6603 using XDA Premium HD app
does it work with another mobile operator? for example, will xperia z vodafone be working with russian mobile operators?
thx!
Should work anywhere but the uk, its only locked to the uk not the rest of the world
what is the difference between locked and not locked bootloader? what does it change?
i always had htc phones new to sony.

A couple of questions..

Is there anyway to hide non used apps?
Will there be a option in a future update to move apps to sd?
Thanks

Root, then remove bloatware.
Use app2sd or similar app from the play store to move apps to sd card. Root is needed

Root won't break camera but will void your warranty! If your'e a first time android user, I suggest you don't root as any **** ups might result in you just having an expensive brick.. Get used to android for a few months before you do any of this stuff.. Unlocking bootloader will cause the camera to break but in your case you don't need to do that.

root will NOT void your warrenty because you can always unroot and leave no trace that the phone was ever rooted.
So you don't have to unlock the bootloader. To be able to root?.

Nope. I think all you need is an application called "VRoot" works for the Z1 as well. As the program is in Chinese, there's a thread about how to use it here. It's also got the download links and stuff
No,
Please read the guides in the dev section, Your questions are answered there

Just so you know most bloated system apps can be disabled from your settings/apps/all without rooting and this removes the icon, and plus side you can always re-enable if you ever need it afterwards

you first need to enable developer mode by setting>about phone>press 10 times on model number. You will then have developer mode enabled, go back and go to developer options and enable usb debugging from there

[Q]Bootloader Unlock Allowed: No = forever stock Kernel?

Well means that simply that I can forget oc or uv my device as like using cm in my device?
And the way flashing a kernel via fastboot won't work for us?

Forget about unlocking the bootloader, its not possible. No over/under-clock for you, no CyanogenMod or other goodies.
All carrier branded phones are locked and almost impossible to unlock.

Only thing I can recommend is to get a generic device instead of a carrier one.
No use lamenting about it here.

is there chance to have -Bootloader Unlock Allowed: No - when my phone is from shop ? ( not from carrier, not branded)
I think that it's not the matter of branded/not branded etc. beacuse I've seen bootloader unlock allowed: yes after I rooted and installed CWM and TWRP; today I've reverted rooting via SPC and the bootloader unlock allowed is back on: no; so I think someone has to look through it to see if you can override it...

I doubt the Sony bootloader will be cracked any time soon as the Xperia T was never cracked and thats a much older device.
Unfortunately that means no custom kernels/CyanogenMod.
If you buy a factory unlocked device the bootloader will be unlockable/carrier branded devices may be locked and not unlock able.. Pretty simple really.
Sorry that I can't help much.
Un-lock Xpeia SP
If you Un-lock the Xperia SP for all Networks, does this make bootloader Unlock available?
If not, any Ideas why?

Nope. SIM-UNLOCK is separate to bootloader unlock.
It just doesn't.
On some old xperia phones you could open sim and bootloader like xperia arc if you used test point method to unlock sim it unlocked boot loader as well.
2013 xperia models that don't have removable battery are no longer able to use test point so you can't unlock boot loader or sim.
To unlock sim you need code which you cab buy from internet.
To unlock bootloader you need to contact your airtime provider and see if they will help in unlocking bootloader again this needs code but not freely available.

[Q] BIONZ work after relock the bootloader?

Hi guys!
I've read several threads about loosing the BIONZ after unlocking the bootloader. Some say it depends on DRM, some say it has nothing to do with. It's possible to regain it after relocking the BL?
What is truth about this?
Unlocking bootloader makes no change to software...just make sure u have a TA backup....

Actually it does make a lot of changes to the software. Just take a look at the stock rom logcat straight after booting. There's a check if bl is unlocked and if it is then it wipes some stuff.
TA backup is very important before unlocking it so u can go back to LB and send your phone in for a warranty. I can't tell what's up with the bionz as I've unlocked my BL and then restored it, but the camera doesn't seem to be as good as it was. That might be caused by 4.4 firmware though. Can't tell for sure.

some unlock bootloader guys confirm track ID work but they cant use update music info feature in walkman app, x-reality stop working, picture quality lower than lockbootloader
( im not sure, just read from google, should we make a thread to vote and confirm what feature stop working after unlock bootloader ?)
I can say it like this then.
I unlocked lost drm keys forever. I relocked my phone using flashtool. Drm keys still not there according to what we know.
But all the functions you mention works. I've compared pictures with ones that comes from a locked bl with never was unlocked. They are the same quality. The other functions you mention works aswell.
And remember now, I don't have any drm keys. But I have relocked bl. I unlocked last night again. And I actually checked these things just to see and guess what. They all still worked.

Yes, those are missing DRM when you UB. Those require for X-reality/BIONZ/other exclusive Xperia feature....
Imagine TA like multiple block. Each value has it own block. When you UB, those 3 block (MARLIN, WLMA, CKB) will be wiped but still recognize as DRM value (faulty). When you use some feature requires that DRM it will compare each block to original value, if match it will continue to work. If not, well you know the situation
