I found the files that temporary turn off the notification/charging led on our Xperia Z.
This light is quite strong and can be bothering when sleeping.
So now I have a Tasker icon on my home page that automatically when I want to sleep:
- Load the alarm screen
- Put the screen brightness to very dim
- Change the screen standby time to 10 seconds
- Put in silence mode
- Put in airplane mode (via secure settings)
- An finally turn off the charging led colors
For the led part, add a task in Tasker then click the + button and choose Script -> Launch a Shell
Check "Use root" and add in the command entry :
echo 0 > /sys/class/leds/lm3533-blue/max_brightness
Follow the same procedure to add these two commands :
echo 0 > /sys/class/leds/lm3533-red/max_brightness
echo 0 > /sys/class/leds/lm3533-green/max_brightness
To turn them back on change the 0 with 255 in another task
And another to put things back on when I wake up.
In order to have a task icon to your homescreen just add a shortcut then choose Takser shorcut.
You can change the icon into taker too.
Or just put the phone face down?
I cannot actually believe that that tiny led disturbs your sleep... What happens if a car drives by... Or there's a full moon on a clear night? What about the stars...?

1. Try typing "turn off charging light" in Google and see how much people are bothered with that question.
2. Face down? How convenient to use it as a night clock. Without mentioning the dock.
3. I don't know about full moon or clear night, I live under a roof.
4. Yes, I find the green light is particularly strong and I passed the age of having a night light.
5. More importantly you sir are really not in the good forum to question the utility of having a better control of your phone. Quite surprising that came from you because you made a similar thread back in 2012 (make the notification light dimmer)
Hopefully a quick topic, but anyone with a Nexus 6 / Lollipop figure out how to turn off notification vibration?

I think for now you have to change the the notifications setting below the volume slider to "None". I don't have my Nexus 6 yet, but I did update to Lollipop on my Nexus 5.

Which notification/s? Most if not all (that I know of) have their own setting within the app itself. This would go in the Q&A section
Some apps like "Power Toggles" will allow you to use a toggle that gives you the old Silent mode back. It looks like it is in priority mode but it's one step further. Notification light works, alarms work but nothing makes noises (all the system noises are silenced). I am using that for now.
How is there not a complete silent mode on this phone? Ridiculous, especially considering the Nexus 9 has one and it's a TABLET!!!

No, this turns off ALL notifications. There should be a way to still get notifications without the phone vibrating.

I still want my notifications to show up on my phone/moto 360 but the way the Nexus 6 handles the notifications makes my moto pretty much useless.
I love this phone, but this was a stupid mistake on Google's part. You should be able to disable all vibrations without impact to notifications. On top of that, you should be able to control the intensity of the vibrations. Uggg. :bad:

Agreed. For me the vibration motor on this phone is louder than the actual notification sounds, it's embarrassing. Was able to customize intensity on my Note 2. I've just been using priority mode to keep things silent during work, and the Pushbullet app to have notifications pop up on my computer. That system has been working pretty well at least.
No fix for this yet?

You can change the intensity using custom kernel like elementalX.

Yes, but I shouldn't have to run a custom kernel. This is a ridiculous oversight by Google.

I'm not exactly -against- running a custom kernel, but I'd like to modify as little as possible. At this point, I'd totally be willing to disable vibration completely rather than try and tweak it into oblivion. I'm currently on the CM12 official nightly. I was using franco kernel, and it was good, but it seems that the cm kernel is doing just fine for me right now.
If anyone knows a surefire way to break the vibration(in software) do tell!!
So I use an app called audio manager and one of the options is to make vibrations to be turned off. This has worked for me with no impact to notifications. This is a great fix for those of us who are trying to stay factory
Here is screen shot of what to do in the correct order
there is an option in the phone, and messaging app, that you can turn off vibration. go into messages.. click settings, notifications, viola.. uncheck the vibrate box.
I don't have any vibrate on any of my notifications all the apps have there own settings as to whether u want vibrate or not.

Its kinda old though:
I turn off my vibration notification by going to the app.
For me was to disable only vibration of Hangout notification.
I went :
1) slide main menu of Hangout
2) Setting
3) choose account like [email protected]
4) In HANGOUT NOTIFICAITON section, click "Hangout messages & invites"
5) uncheck vibrate to disable.
Enjoy!

Is there a workaround yet to stop Android Auto from disabling the phone.? Once I'm connected to the car I can't see any email notifications (sound/vibrate/LED). It's really irritating and means I have to disconnect my phone every 15 minutes to check email!
Thanks.
Isn't the whole point of AA not to look at your phone every 15 mins while driving ?

You can hit the multi task button and open a recent app. Keep your email client open in recents and check it at stoplights.

That's it! Brilliant thank you. So simple but hadn't tried that. I've now installed the caffeine app which also keeps the screen on permanently when connected to a USB. That way the email notification LED light now works when in Android Auto mode.
Thanks again

Or not. That's kind of the point of Android Auto in the first place is to get people off of messing with their phones while they're driving.
The only solution that I am aware I was to buy an Android Wear watch. All notifications still come through on the watch even when connected to Android Auto.
Press multi task button then press home, quickly select app or open app drawer.
I use this method with Note 4

Hello and sorry for reviving such an old thread.
I have used for some time the trick suggested by @ireknole with a phone having hard buttons. My new phone, however, has soft buttons and Android Auto disables on purpose the multi-task button. (Mate 10 Pro, Android 8.0).
I have no other option left now to check my phone while AA is connected to the car and running. I need to check the phone for searching for a song or my wife needs to change the song while i'm driving - plus search the internet or whatever else she feels like on long roadtrips.
However, I can still access the notifications drawer and all the shortcut buttons found there (i did not give AA permission to draw over other applications).
Does anybody know:
1) How to place a custom button in the notifications drawer which specifically does that: activate multi-task function or any other function to just put AA in background and allow me to access other apps?
2) How to forbid AA to disable my multi-task button in the first place?
Thank you!

I haven't found a way to get the multitask button to reshow, but I have a built in app on my Samsung S8 that allows me to swipe from the edge of the phone and select the "shortcut" "recent apps" that acts like the multitask button. There may be an app that's similar in the play store that lets you open it with a swipe and map a "recent apps" shortcut as an option.

another way is to install AAWidget. it display a widget on your Android auto screen.
but this only work for AA2.9 since google disable third party apk in AA3.0
AA widget will list down mails, whatapps messages etc as long as theres widget for those apk.
make a clone and aawidget and you can havemultiple widget to read your email/whatsapp etc
but you cant read full email or messages if the email or messages too long. just good enough to check what are the incoming email/messages
Thank you for your answers!
I did not try your solutions because in the meanwhile I found a way to gain complete control over my phone using Tasker.
For anyone interested, create a new profile in Tasker, set the trigger to Apps->Android Auto and the task to "Go home".
What this setup achieves is showing the home screen whenever AA tries to pop up on screen, which solves all the problems
I can use my phone as if AA was not running at all, while AA is completely functional on the car's screen.
I use AA 2.9.57xxxx.
If you are on Nougat you can add a custom tile using the regular android api to launche the home launcher activity. But please don't post any source code or ready to use apk somewhere. This should be something for the "pros" if its too easy to use they come up with a way to block the notification drawer

I just started using AA on my Nexus 5X running 8.1. AA hides the multi-task button, but if you swipe up from the bottom of the screen; the buttons re-appear for a few seconds and you can select it again.
My problem is that AA sets the screen timeout to 15 sec. So when I pull over to check/write an email; the screen constantly shuts off. The Nexus 5X is no longer a "fast" phone, so starting OWA (outlook) takes more than 15 sec. I've gone into the phone settings after connecting the phone and changing it back to 2 min., but this setting will re-set the next time I plug the phone in again.
Latest version and the version before it (3.1 is latest, can't remember exactly what the previous version is) has changed this.. you can now just swipe up on the phone and access it normally when it's connected to Android auto.

Bit of an oversight not to have it on Nokia's part. I mean how much would it have cost, a $?
Phone call notifications are hard coded as missed calls.
Email / messages - these are based on the notification category - GMail / Outlook show as emails, FB Messenger* and text messages show as messages - WhatsApp doesn't
* FB Messenger is hit and miss at times, I think group ones show, but if any media is sent, the notification category changes and no longer counts as a message
I thought I could get by with glance rather than a notification LED, but I can't. Glance doesn't display notifications for Texta or True Phone for me - I have to use the stock messaging and dialler apps.
Also, glance disappears after a minute unless you move your phone. If you set it to the maximum of 20 minutes, it stays on even when there aren't any notifications, thus wasting battery.
I tried NoLED, but it's not the same, and it too has the entire display on just to display a small coloured dot.
This, together with the slow fingerprint scanner means I'll likely sell my Nokia 8 and keep my Mi6. It's disappointing, as I love having stock Android and timely updates.

I have two thoughts on the subject but I don't even have the phone so this might not worth much it's informative I gathered researching the phone as I have an interest in it,
1. I read somewhere that the area which shows the glance screen actually uses lower power and therfore shouldn't use much battery despite it being lcd it sounds weird but try the twenty minutes option and see if you truly get much battery drain.
2. I read somewhere else that there might be a software update that will enable the capacitive buttons light to blink on notifications... If you can hold on until that is available....

Maybe Nokia has some plans for an S-View-like cover that has a window in that area... just sayin'.
Anyway, lighting up / blinking capacitive buttons for notifications would be truly awesome!
hey there i wanted to ask if your screen wakes upon notifications, or it stays off, but only notification sound comes through (just like my nokia 8 does)
is there a way to wake screen upon notifications (kinda like ambient display), without me having to double tap?
thanks
Unfortunately the screen doesn't wake up on notif. It was a big issue for me, as there is no led either, and the glance is just useless in its current state (really need an update to be as good as lumias)
I'm a heavy SMS and Whatsapp sender. I solved the issue with Textra for SMS (you can enable the screen wake-up in the app settings, and it works perfectly) and Whatsapp automatically wake-up the screen too.
Use glimpse notifications app, it's a great app.
Stock android, from 6.0 ver (I mean) , doesn't have that option anymore.

Hi there.
I don't know if it is normal, or not...
I bought a calendar app.
I was not able to receive any notification (bubble + sound). I could receive them if I clicked on the app to run it tho...
So I tried everything and now, it works !
Through, I need your help to see if everything good and seems normal for you.
I had hold my calendar app and "app info". And then, I had go to each permission and enable what I have colored in orange circle :
Battery saver https://imgur.com/OPoSxPL
Notifications https://imgur.com/uyP3axZ
Other permissions https://imgur.com/ssLgM0N
Enable auto start https://imgur.com/mEIyeZn
And then, enable two settings https://imgur.com/2lHHy29
And now, I'm able to receive all notification (bubble + sound) when I kill app.
Also it works if I restart the smartphone and unlock it to go to the home screen. But it doesn't work if I disable "autostart"
I have to do the same with messenger, reddit app.
Please, let me know if everything seems normal for you.
Should I do it with all social app ? Like facebook, whatsapp, snapchat, instagram ?
How about the drain battery ?
Thanks very much (excuse my english)
I had the same problem with yours when my first time using miui. I did the same steps with messanger apps (etc whatsapp & telegram). Plus I locked the apps in the recent app tray. It definitely helps with receiving notification on time in those apps.
I find, that I have to enable more or less all the options to be sure I will get notifications.
What you show on the pictures is OK.
My battery lasts 2 days if I use it normally with some Candy Crush, email, Instagram,... 5-6 hours of screen time
Android 10 broke my Amazfit and Mi Fit notifications. It only works if I uninstall and install again.
