[Q] Video acceleration? - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

cm11.0_golden.maclaw.20140126.ODIN_TWRP, android version 4.4.2 -- none of the video players (e.g. diceplayer) I tried work then acceleration is enabled in settings. Is there a specific option somewhere in android settings or am I out of luck?

MX Player is working fine for me with normal hardware decoding on. I would also recommend you to update your ROM, since you are running almost 2 months behind on updates. It may have been fixed in one of those updates, but I'm not sure.

Updated to cm11.0_golden.maclaw.20140314.ODIN_TWRP and every video player still crashes if acceleration is enabled. Is there more info on this topic somewhere? My google-fu fails me.
edit: reverted back to official rom -- I8190_I8190XXAMG4_I8190XXAMG4_I8190OXXAMH1-PreRooted.zip

Video acceleration is now working in diceplayer.

[Q] Overcome ROM and stagefright

OK what the ---- is this stagefright business people keep talking about.
I've followed a number of threads where people argue about the correct settings, then claim that it either fixes or doesn't fix various video playback issues. Now I see the overcome 2.1 changelog has stagefright tweaks integrated.
I've never touched those settings outside of a stock overcome install, and I've never had any video playback issues including x264 in mp4 containers encoded at at least normal profile (I know its not baseline, as the files won't play on my atrix lol but it does play on my tab).
What gives?
Stagefright is the new media framework by google. They started it in Froyo and apparently they haven't even finished it in Gingerbread lol ;P. They are supposed to enhance playback of media files but due to the fact that it is still an unfinished products enabling all stagefright settings tend to break playback for some video formats. I have been conducting some serious testing to see which settings work and which are still broken. I reached a conclusion that stagefright-http (enabled by default in stock ROM as well) and that stagefright rtsp are the best working settings that smoothens video playback in streaming websites. Other settings are still unfinished and activating them tend to break video playback for some file formats.
I hope that answers your questions.
OK cheers. I guess I'm just lucky then. Looking forwards to the next overcome. thanks again
Will the new Overcome roms have the optimum setting already?
Yes they will as per changelog.
How can I change the settings in oc 2.0.1 hermes?
Tried blade buddy and saw a stagefright http setting but no rtmp one.

[Q] best custom rom

What is the best custom rom for galaxy tab p1000 beside milestone 5
I like MIUI-XJ-SGT and Overcome because almost everything that is important to me seems to work. But I think It depends on your criteria.
I've been trying every ROM I can get my hands on for the last two days, as well as multiple versions of each.
I've been looking for a rom that supports NTFS on the external SD. (MIUI and Overcome lack NTFS support)
For me the perfect ROM would have:
NTFS support on external SD
Video and Audio HW support functional in stock and installed video players.
Working YouTube app.
Working Flash support in browser.
So far I have yet to find one that satisfies all criteria.
Boca comes close, but lacks HW video in stock and most installed players except dice.
okay thanks......,..........is cynogenmod 9 still beta
I tried the latest build as of yesterday. When I try a ROM I am usually looking for the criteria I listed above, because I wish to use the tab as an effective media player.
So I found the following:
Suprisingly HW acceleration works in installed video players BUT
Hardware Audio did not.
NTFS access was very spotty, with a few apps able to see files but most unable.
Youtube force closed for me every time.
So, unless a lot has changed since yesterday, I would call that very much a beta.
LOL I just realized I may be mixing up my findings with Milestone 5. Will try CM9 again this afternoon and correct this if I find something different.
LOL I just realized I may be mixing up the findings for Milestone 5 with CM9, will try CM9 again today and update if I find something different. So many ROMs so little time!
LOL hope I am not mixing up the findings for Milestone 5 - going to try CM9 again today and will update this if I find something different
Didn't try flash in browser, because at that time I had already dismissed the ROM for my needs. Will try again on a later build.
Tested slightly newer CM9 today. Here are the findings:
I have the following build of CM9 on my tab now:
cm-9-20120511-NIGHTLY-p1-signed
Installed: gapps-ics-20120429-signed
This is most recent version posted to the CM9 nightly builds as of May 13. This was installed on a Tmobile GSM tab.
1. Wifi - Working fine
2. Market: Working fine
3. Stock Video player DOES see files on NTFS formatted sd card.
4. In Settings under Storage, NTFS formatted card is seen and correct size is stated.
5. Hardware video acceleration works in stock video player. This is using a 720p MKV file.
6. Hardware sound does not work in stock video player - at least I haven't been able to find a way to get it to work.
7. Dice Player can't see files on external SD formatted to NTFS.
8. Dice Player from files on internal storage: has HW acceleration and functioning audio - works very well.
9.. Youtube videos play very well from stock browser.
10. Stand alone Youtube app works well.
11. Observation: Copying files to internal storage via USB is slower than in the GB ROMs such as BOCA.
12. MX Player Pro Plays HW video fine (720p MKV) but has no hardware audio. Can see files on external NTFS formatted SD. Will play with sound only if software sound deconding is used. Then it works reasonably well.
13. Flash video in stock browser works.
All in all a pretty decent ROM. Only big issue is the lack of HW audio in video players, and if you want to use NTFS on your external SD, support is poor.
thank ...man this info is the best

Thanks for your great Info!
Have you tried the latest update-cm-9-20120525-NIGHTLY-p1-signed.zip?
The reason I ask is that a friend of mine has just bought one off eBay but has Froyo.
Knowing it's already rooted, is it worth moving straight to CM9 now? From your description you gave, it appears almost good to go?
Cheers

I've been using the nightly from the 23rd and now the 25th. Both fantastic roms. I would have no concerns recommending either as a daily usage rom.

For me everything works great, except the auto backlight level that stopped working since the 25th... same with 26th.
And I can't find a place to report this...

Dude, there isnt such a thing like a best rom, its ****ing rude to compare the great jobs of our devs. All ics 4.0.4 roms r working better as the stock firmware by samsung and we got better support. Just try them by yourself but dont blame others by asking such stupid questions. I tried all ics 4.0.4 roms, ****ing great job, but somehow i prefer aokp. Maybe because of more features but i think switch soon. They all r freakin good. Chheers

[Q] Video playback issues

I've been using MX player to watch my videos on the One, and I've got some issues with it. The video occassionally freezes (audio continues) and I have to either wait a couple of seconds for it to catch up, or I have to rewind/forward to get it moving again. This happens on every single video I've tried (at least ones that I've copied over via USB) and I can't seem to figure it out. Already tried using the custom ARM7 neon codec too as suggested from MXplayer but it didn't make a difference. HW+, or software renderer does not make a difference either. Anybody else having these problems ? If so, were you able to fix it, or find a workaround ?
Forgot to add that I'm still using the stock ROM.
Try uninstalling the codec pack, you don't need it unless MX Player specifically asks for it. I can't say I've had video go out of sync before though.

Thanks! I installed it just yesterday to see if it makes any difference. Until then I was using the default codec that comes with the player. I'm using the free version of MX player if that makes any difference.

No one else having this problem ?
Maybe try a factory rest and see if that fixes it?

Yep - also have this problem sometimes - not tried uninstalling the codecs yet so will give that a try.
You could try VLC Player for android - works great for me with no lag or O/S problems.
Im Rooted, Tampered and running Android Revolution 9.2, with custom 1.29 Audio files(tfa) and PureXaudio 4.0

[Q] 4.3 - No longer plays video files

Hi guys,
I updated my Nexus 7 to 4.3 today and I'm now no longer able to play my previously working video files. I've used both VLC and AVP, the file plays but I get sound only and no picture.
The thumbnails for the files are displaying correctly. These are movies in .mkv and .avi format which used to work with no problems.
Has anyone else experienced this and do you think it may be a 4.3 issue or perhaps an app compatibility problem with the new Android version?
Thanks.

It isn't just you. A number of video players are not functional with 4.3. All you can do is review them in the play store and tell them. I am sure most of the App Devs are probably aware of this, but who knows...
This also happened from 4.1.2 to 4.2, just wait a day and it will be fixed by app updates

This is true, but most were a couple of weeks to be re-coded, including MX Player. What is funny is that right after I installed 4.3, MX player and a couple of others worked for a few hours then I got the Unsupported Android Version. I thought that was rather odd...
Cheers guys, I figured as much. Just wanted to make sure nothing got botched along the way!
Thanks for the replies.

Vplayer now supports 4.3
Videos in some games are tiny for me too, meh.
The stock video player still works of course, even for mkv files. Except no subtitles and it can't play hi10p.
Just found out I now prefer Vplayer to MX Player.
Ive always looked no further than MX cause I thought it was the best, now that Vplayer has had an update for 4.3 I tried it and like it very much. Very similar to MX but much more appealing.

YouTube Problems on 6.0.1

Anyone experiencing YouTube issues with the 6.0.1 update? When I scroll while watching a video the video lags. I googled some solutions and turned on disable hw overlay in the dev settings and that helped.
But now the video freezes while watching it in landscape. So I'm not really sure what to do.
Tried uninstalling the app and clearing data, cache, reinstalling etc. Any ideas?
Bump
Youtube for me is ok , i am un 6.0.1
I get lag while scrolling too
I have no issue with youtube. I use it daily and never see a bit of lag. Mind you I use an aosp based rom that is 6.0.1.
Damn. I might have to do a full wipe.
I enabled 'disable hw overlay' and all is ok, both portrait and landscape mode.

This solution for me worked for Youtube and Twitch, but totally broke Netflix (no image on videos, just sound) and I had to reverse the change to be able to watch on it again.

Probably won't work, because even twitch has the same issue, so this seems more general in stock 6.0.1 ROM.

Yes, I said in a previous post. This fixes the YouTube problem (and Twitch as I saw with the same issue), but it breaks other video apps. After switching this option in developer settings I couldn't see videos in Netflix anymore (you can hear it, but no image).

Lol now I remember where I saw it. Well I don't use Netflix so I'm good for now. Hope an update fix the issue
I'll do a clean install later on next week. Upgrading computer currently. But hw overlay does fix the YouTube problem for now at least. I have to pause and press play on the video to get it to not freeze so that's still annoying
Any updates from anyone? Just upgraded to the newest update and the problem persists. Hw overlay still fixes the problem however my other video apps like Netflix and Google play movies just give a black screen until I disable it.
(Was a clean install)
