OTA update after rooting - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So.. I was on 14.2.A.1.136 (4.3) stock firmware.. I wanted to root and I had to downgrade to 4.2.2 then root then flashing 14.2.A.0.290 (4.3) firmware.. Thanks to @shem2409 and @[NUT] for this method.
Anyway.. After rooting and flashing and all of that.. I received an OTA update for the stock 14.2.A.1.136 firmware.. And I was really surprised because what I know is that you lose the OTA updates and pc companion updates capabilities after you root your phone.
So my Question is.. If I updated the firmware OTA will I lose thr root? I can't afford to root it again for at least 3 weeks because my laptop is on the maintenance right now ..and I need the root privileges.

[Q] Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and new 257 updates to keep root?

does voodoo ota rootkeeper work in preserving root if we update from 254 to 257 via the sony official ota update and not via FTF files? just curious

I'm not 100% that the .257 update is available via ota, you have to get via SEUS or PC Companion, and i dont think rootkeeper will work, as the .257 firmware patches the exploit previously used.

The update is available via Sony update Centre, and it will obliterate ROOT. Hopefully a new exploit can be found
There are prorroted stock .257 roms in the development section
I didn't use any OTA root keeper and updated to 257 via OTA, and root was kept.

You are referring to the 257 update via Sony Update Centre app? It will not remove root when you update.

My apologies, I installed the .257 via Sony Update Service, which treated it like a new phone. For some reason the OTA update won't install on my phone, it always fails. I rooted with vRoot, so not sure if that helps or hinders :/
hi guys, I heard from many Chinese users on Gfan bbs, that they actually have a ROOTED 534 and just did an update via OTA (yes via the phone, NOT PCC or US) and their ROOT STAYED!! hearing around 4,5 people already who confirms it.
I gonna try it soon with my wife's white Z1~I thnk

If you have read the numerous threads before updating, you'll find out that the old methods no longer work as Sony closed the root exploit in the new update.
The "longer" way of rooting the 257 firmware can be found here:

This thread is super old... Only .534 can be rooted, then you can OTA update to .257

Downgrade to .534, root and then upgrade OTA.
Download the file here: https://mega.co.nz/#!K1QD1bSK!JkgNvz3Tqb6lq4brVUEyZGraOjMQuTuzn8IaEFhQhUI (ftf file for .534 firmware)
Use flashtool to downgrade it ( untick wipe data/cache/appslogs )
Then root it with vroot or something else.
Then it will prompt you to download .257, doing do it OTA not through your PC

It will tell you to update to 290.
However, if your bootloader is unlock-able, backup TA partition then unlock it, then install a recovery and flash Supersu flashable zip, then flash stock kernel and then restore TA partition.

by than 4.4 is out..
Gettin abit confused now with all this root, bootloader, 4.3 stuff.
am still on 257 (rooted), i have the 4.3 OTA notice but i know if i update ill lose root (maybe partial root). ive heard that 4.3 can be rooted but requires unlocking the bootloader. when i go into the service menu it says: Bootloader unlock allowed: NO.
does this mean its not possible for me to root 4.3 at the moment.
if not then whats the limitation on Partial root, i dont do anything particular advance with root, just get certian apps (greenify, ad-away, autohide softkeys) can these apps still function properly on Partial root?
sorry i know these questions have been asked elsewhere but its pain trying to look through the many many threads or looking through about 60 pages on 1 thread.

Bootloader unlock allowed: NO means you can't unlock bootloader.
Partial root doesn't allow you to edit anything in the /system or in the root /.
Anything that edits system won't work (Probably autohide softkeys probably won't work. But it might work if you installed it before updating).

so is the no hack to force bootloader to unlock?
sorry if some questions seem stupid. was an iOS person until i got the z1. use to think jailbreaking was a nightmare but its a blessing in comparison to rooting Android or more specifically the z1.

Yes, and the solution is simple, flash stock 534 and root it with kingo root or vroot or whatever way you may want to use. Then backup TA easily.

[Q] Updating to 4.3

Hi guys,
I have just rooted my new Sony Xperia Z (Android 4.2.2) and I would like to upgrade to Android 4.3.
I was wondering if there was anyway to get the update without loosing my root access?
I am pretty unexperienced at all this stuff. I've heard that "flashing" the 4.3 firmware keeps the root access?
Thanks,
-Lambo
Just flash a prerooted 4.3 through cwm and your root is preserved, just like that

If your bootloader is locked just update it over the air. If your bootloader is unlocked flash a prerooted Rom via Cwm or twrp.
Just flashing a ftf file via flashtool wI'll make you lose root

But I guess some regions haven't even received the 4.4.2 update yet.

No need to unroot. You will get the update even if rooted.
But if you have unlocked the bootloader, you will have to relock it.

Is this ZR's last update?
Since this update is released 18 months after ZR entered the market, is it the final firmware?
