Maybe depends on the stereo track playing?

Noticed that too..
Maybe because the top speaker doubles as an earpiece for phone calls HTC reduced the sound to not blow it or hurt your ears when you turn up the volume

Simple enough question. Several sites say it does (see for example this) while several other sites say it doesn't (e.g. this). Why the conflicting information?

Under the grid at the bottom there is 1 speaker. You hear sound from right side because it's made like that.

I would assume that's to do with the positioning of the microphone. It's like the iPhone 4 and 4s, two 'speakers' at the bottom but one was really a mic.

No not at all, I noticed a while ago that if you cover the left hand side of the speaker it affects the sound, covering the right side doesn't. So it could well be there is a microphone under the mesh, one sides a speaker, one sides a mic.
Or it could be my speaker is buggered like the OP.

so it seems big grid is for design and also protection of both speaker and mic.

I just bought a second hand HTC one and only the bottom loudspeaker is working. Does it only have one buttom loudspeaker or the top one is also the same as the bottom one?

Both speakers should be working. I would recommend taking it back.

Is there any modification we can make that will allow the top speaker to work with music and videos aswell?

Doubtful. It's not a loudspeaker. If a simple mod would turn it into one, surely Motorola just would have made it that way from the start.
It's not a speaker. It's just a grille covering the ear piece to give the phone symmetry.
The speaker is really loud anyway, much better than the Nexus 5.
Thanks for the replies guys, the speaker is amazing but just wished that this phone could have stereo sound. I just can't believe that the 2nd gen moto g does and this doesn't. Don't know if it's just me but I can really notice hearing audio more from one ear while watching things or playing games.

And to keep the screen of touching ground when face down
Is anyone else having an issue with no sound coming from the bottom left speaker? I tried a sound test on Youtube and the top and bottom right speakers work. When something that should be playing out of the left, it just plays through the other two speakers. I also went into accessibility settings and set audio to play only from the left and it still only plays out the right and top speakers.
Try an audio track where you know where a particular sound should be.. left or right speaker...
Not a you tube track tho..

The other hole is a mic.

I was hoping for a reply like this and not that the device was faulty. Thank you for the quick answer. I'm coming from the Note 8 so I'm use to the design of the speaker/mic being different. Thanks again :good:

Sad to hear this, as initially it was reported that both of those would be speakers. Kind of disappointed, now.

I didn't see anywhere that it was reported?
I saw plenty of speculation that it might be, but nothing with any proof.

yeah, no proof. I believe it was just initials speculation, since you don't need that many holes just for a microphone.

On the other hand those make it look very symmetric on the bottom.

I agree with this. At least the other holes are being used for something. Not like another certain OEM ,cough cough, OP...
Sounds pretty darn good to me.

Hi,
There are two speaker grills in the bottom of the device. Do they both works or only the right one works and the left one dummy ?
For my device right one is working, is it natural or my device is faulty ?

One of those "speaker grills" is actually a microphone, not a speaker. So you're good...

@Lakino, this is why!
Me and Lakino was discussing this as we were figuring out that no sound was coming out of one...
Also we discussed how great the Pixel 2 XL's speakers were and how much I miss them...

That makes sense. Guess we do need a mic somewhere down there.
Ok, next question. @Lughnasadh
There is a tiny pin prick hole on the top left hand side edge -- as you look at the phone. What is that hole for then? I thought that might have been the input mic.

If I'm thinking of the hole you are describing, that's a microphone. There are 3 microphones. A top one, a bottom one and a rear-facing one.

The heck? 3 mics? What the heck does the phone need 3 mics for? That's crazy.

The one you are describing might have to do with noise cancellation, but I'm not sure. Just a guess. The rear-facing one may have to do with video audio.
