HTC One Stock HD Netflix not working - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there, everyone. Please excuse me if this thread is in the wrong section.
I have an Sprint HTC One running the stock 4.3 rom. As I understand it, Android 4.3 supports Netflix DRM for HD/1080P Streaming.
For whatever reason I have been completely unable to watch HD Netflix on my phone, and the quality of anything HD is just horrible, also when I talked to Netflix support about it, they claimed it was a "Build Restriction" I assume on HTC's part? Netflix support also said my phone should be playing in HD just fine, and is a supported model on their end or whatnot.
I have contacted HTC Support over a week ago, and they haven't responded.
Anyway, I don't think upgrading to 4.4 OTA will resolve this. I see that there is another thread about someone's AT&T HTC One running 4.3, with the same problem.
I would try to bug Sprint about this on the Sprint forums, but for some reason it requires a phone number now, and wouldn't let me log in.
Has anyone else had the same problem? Any ideas/tips? Does anyone have a modded Netflix app for streaming in HD?
Edit: 4/6/14. I chatted with Netflix again, and got the same result. It looks like HTC only allows the phone to play up to 480p in the Netflix app. Maybe the phone isn't capable of playing a higher bitrate? The picture attached is what I was told by Netflix support.

Many possible causes for this.
could be the carrier blocking streaming, could be lack of bandwidth. You dont mention if you are using cellular, lte or wifi.
Have you tried other data connections such as known good wifi? HD streaming does take a meg or two down to be able to stream it, and lets face it, sprint isnt know for having the best data network. But thats a discussion for another thread. LOL
Follow up with us as to how you have tried to use the service.

Sorry I should have stated this in my original post.
It definitely isn't a bandwidth problem. I have a 50/5 connection, and Netflix works fine on everything else. I have also tried with LTE, and it gives the same result.
All Speedtests on my phone give great results, so once again it isn't a connection issue.

Bump!

Crap, i should have caught you were on Sprint.
they have some odd settings (or used to back when i was with them and had EVO LTE) that use some weird severs for them
You will need to get your MSL code.
Also this worked for me back when i had Sprint so not sure if this will help or not.

1. Get your MSL, by calling Sprint or by using CDMA workshop like i explain below
2. After you have your MSL go to your phone and type ##3282#
3. Click Edit Mode

I get the same results from Netflix with WiFi and LTE. And LTE seems fast enough. Will changing these settings somehow make a difference even with WiFi?
Thanks.

Extra Settings on Chrome

I found some extra settings on the Chromecast extension for Chrome.
So I went to my Chrome extensions window and clicked "Options" for the Google Cast extension.
In the tab, I right clicked > Inspect Element.
I noticed that a section of the page had a "display: none;" so I removed that and got this:

Needs Reciever app?
Man I thought i was onto something with the whole URL for Flinging Command.
Apparently some have seen in the SDK that an example video using the big buck bunny video url could be casted. http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2332706&page=2
USER: vshah
the sample code, for example, simply passes this URL to chromecast to play "big buck bunny"
http://clips.vorwaerts-gmbh.de/VfE_html5.mp4
if smb shares are supported by chromecast, then i see no reason why it shouldn't work.

Also a great idea by user blackdogdeek
Forgive my possible ignorance, but couldn't you just run a web server on your smb box and give the URL of your local vid stash?
ie - pass http://192.168.1.10/public_html/vids/movie.mp4 to chromecast

So we need to figure out how to initiate the fling command? Is there a receiver app in the SDK kit or something?
I'm a total noob when it comes to this but this has my jimmies rustled and i'm excited about the possibilities.
I posted about this 2 days ago:

Google SDK
Whitelisting Chrome apps
To permit your Chrome sender application to use the SDK, you must register the application's domain in the Google Cast extension for Chrome.
Be sure you are running Chrome version 28 or later.
If you haven't restarted Chrome in a while you may be running an older version; restarting will update Chrome automatically.
In the Chrome omnibox, enter chrome://extensions, and check the Developer mode checkbox to enable developer mode.
Install the Chrome extension for Google Cast.
On the Cast icon in Chrome's upper right corner, click four (4) times.
In the Cast extension, scroll to the Developer options.
In the Cast SDK additional domains field, click Add and enter the domain of your application, for example, "www.mydomain.com."
Code your application's HTML tag as follows:
<html data-cast-api-enabled=”true”>
Click to collapse
I couldnt get the above to work but I found it in the options by removing the display:none from <section ng-show="doubleClicks > 1" style="">
So someone who gets "White Listed" could try sending a URL to the ChromeCast?
Edit: So someone can start making a webpage that uses this correctly and just add that domain to the Chromecast extensions whitelist?
see https://developers.google.com/cast/chrome_sender

Adding the domain is just a way of telling your extension that the domain is serving a chromecast receiver. They haven't opened the floodgates for developers so they are keep everything controlled, hence the whitelist process. You do "send" a URL to the chromecast but it's really just for the chrome extension to know that a websocket can be opened for the receiver site and the client (the chrome extension).
Someone else found the same thing and posted it on Reddit. Here's the link
Also note that the user Ranek520 said: "Unfortunately, none of those advanced options are actually hooked up. The JavaScript to store or load the values is removed for the release version of the extension. That's why the values are all blank.
Source: I wrote the max frame rate option."
So currently these options do nothing.
Nice find! Thanks!

Still, they are for a reason. I guess they are waiting for a future update to activate them, or may be some dormant hardware like LTE in Nexus 4.
Anyway, it opens the door to many possibilities...
Ugh I wish I could get this on Android. With certain variations of these settings, the connection is so much better on my Chromebook than it is on any of my android devices.
Thanks, very good

Using Plex without a phone?

It is pretty annoying that a phone is required to use the Chromecast's Plex. I have Plex set up fine, and it plays all nice, but I don't want to use my phone as a remote, if I have a laptop or desktop I can use.
I want to stream from my desktop to the Chromecast with Plex. It works fine, but my phone has to be used as a "middleman".
Any way around this? Like using the interface in the Plex web server?

Try using plex.tv, log in and you should be able to cast from there just fine, you will need to setup your Plex server to be seen over the internet correctly within Plex/Web.

You have to set it up in your Plex Media Server/MyPlex settings.
http://127.0.0.1:32400/manage/index.html#!/settings
You have to fill out your login, and connect, if done right you should have 2 green checkmarks, you may have to click Show Advanced Settings to manually set the port, then you will have to port forward that port on your router (I did so because I disable UPnP as a matter of habit).

Yes, and open up Advanced and check the box, "Manually specify port" leaving 32400 filled in, I found it would not work for me otherwise.
I forwarded port 32400 and canyouseeme.org says:
I can see your service on 80.xx.92.xx on port (32400)
Your ISP is not blocking port 32400
When I open the page: http://plex.tv/web/app it's not there though. Still says "You don't have any media servers yet."

I got it to work! I logged in (it shows I logged in on the right side -.-), but whenever I play a movie, it just stucks there with a gray screen..
When I pick "Local" (my PC obviously) it works fine, but Chromecast is just gray screen.

:\...dunno, when it worked for me the other day (even though I'm not a subscriber) it worked fine (now it no longer works for me, (since i'm not subscribed), so I cannot test it again).
Maybe it needs time to sync? Try restarting your PC and or the Plex server...try it in an incognito chrome browser window (this will make sure you do not have some plugin interfering)...if worse comes to worse, you may have to contact Plex.

Rom Dedicated to Hotspot

Has anyone come across a ROM that's dedicated to HotSpoting?
My thoughts are this:
1) Is there anything for this phone like a SafeStrap where you can change roms just by rebooting?
2) Could a rom be written to disable pretty much everything except hotspot (cannot receive text messages or phone calls, no apks are trying to use the internet in the background, etc...)?
I don't know how to make roms, so I am not going to say it sounds easy, but it does sound much simpler than a lot of the full OS roms I see.
Thanks guys!
I mean, there're 3G router for 30 dollars that can do that, and you want to use a fully featured phone that costs 150 USD$ o more for that?
Mmmmm.....

yeah but there's already ROMs that have the ability to do Wifi hotspot. so why wouldnt you just flash one of those and call it a day.
not like you're really going to see any better battery life by only having it as a hotspot. that **** kills the battery

My phone already does hotspot. I just changed permissions and have been good to go.
I can't get internet out at my house, so I use my phone's hotspot (and an antenna and amplifier I put together) so I can still game. When I get a phone call, or a picture message, it will lag like crazy, or dump my game.
This is why I would like a very simple ROM that would not allow for anything but a hotspot, or even just the ability to turn everything else off. I also noticed that if I can keep my unused RAM above 1gb, it hotspot's better.

I have looked into 3G routers, but then I'd have to pay for another phone line, and I'm not looking to do that. Then there's companies that sell internet service that is unlimited and 3G, but they are about a $500 start up fee, and about $125 a month after that. That is CRAZY!
Unless I've got it wrong, and I can somehow clone my SIM Card for the 3G router? I'm definitely no 3G router expert. Thoughts?
In that case, you can install Android Firewall and block everything except tethering and there's an app for blocking all calls. I think (my opinion) that's easier than a full hotspot rom having to switch back and forth. You can also make an script for enabling both or use tasker.

Yup, that's what I got. Also I got another apk that blocks startup apks (BootManager), and with both of them I got better signal.
Thanks for the help.
I have also noticed that my battery life has increased a lot. I was 40% more efficient since doing this yesterday, and about 40% more efficient this morning too. I'm assuming it's because of the BootManager.
Does anyone know the programs to allow through the firewall in order to get the hotspot to work?
I tried allowing everything (by clicking the check boxes) and that didn't work unless I clicked the box that says 'all apps'. I'm assuming what I need is not populating and so the only was to get it is to click 'all apps' which defeats the purpose. :-/
And does anyone know if the hotspot is a stand alone or if it uses other applications in order to work?
Thanks again!
If you go to settings, there's an option "Tethering support". You have to enable that in order to tether to works.
Just a thing: If you modify your traffic or DNS or whatever with another program (example, AdFree that blocks ads) the adds will be blocked also to anyone that connects to the hotspot.

I didn't find a 'settings' on it or a 'Tethering Support'. I only see when hitting menu: Firewall Disabled/Enabled, Log Disabled/Enabled, Save Rules, Exit, Help, and More.
Then under 'More', I see: Show Log, Show Rules, Clear Log, Set Password, Set Custom Script.
There is also the Mode in the top left that lets me do White/Black list.
I would love to go into 'Tethering Support if you can guide me there!
I don't know if we are seeing the same app but this one has that option

Droidwall hasn't been updated in ages and doesn't have toggles for tethering.
I use AFWall+, which built off the concept of Droidwall. It has an entry you can whitelist for Tether & DNS.

Ahhh. Yeah, this program looks much much better. I'm out for work all week, but when I get back home this weekend, I'll give it a try.

EDIT: I don't have tethering in the options like you, but it's just another application on the list so I checked it. Is there anything else I need to check to make it only hotspot? Like the phone and text one, or the DLNA?

Sprint Hotspot Mod Working!!!

I just received my Note 9 and have been playing around with things. After doing a little research and piecing together a couple of different posts, I can confirm that I have Sprint Hotspot working. The steps are as follows:
1. Download Shortcut Master Lite from the Play Store.
2. Open Dialer
3. Dial ##brand# (##27263#)
4. Say yes/accept everything - phone reboots
5. Open Shortcut Master Lite and select the Menu (three vertical dots in the upper right).
6. Select App Explorer, and then All Apps
7. Navigate (scroll down) to com.test.LTEfunctionality and select.
8. Select the first item labled "LTEFunctionalityTest" and select launch.
9. Scroll down to LTE APN Setting and select.
10. Select APN2 LTE/EHRPD internet
11. Scroll down to APN type and select.
12. Add "DUN" to the setting (it should read "default, mms,DUN") without quotations. Also make sure there is no space between the comma and DUN.
13. Select Menu and save your settings
14. Reboot
Congratulations, your device now has Sprint Native Hotspot!
Update : You must reapply if you update profile!
Disable automatic updates so that profile updates do not remove!

Nope, I have the Sprint version. Ordered directly through Sprint
Didnt work for me. Anything else you tried that might of made it worked for you?
edit: wth? So earlier I was messing with another method through adb shell and I was afraid maybe I had messed something up so I wanted to undo it all. The guide said to use this commands
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_required 1
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_apn null
then I removed the DUN from apn setting on shortcut master and now the hotspot works? makes no sense but I'll take it lol
Edit 2: Apparently my plan comes with 10gb of hotspot which is why it was working after removing all custom settings. I just went past the 10gb and it has now slowed down to 2g speeds (text from sprint)

Didn't work for me either. I get a you are not subscribed to hotspot. Are you sure you don't need root access for this?

Thank you kindly
If you believe this worked for you, check your sprint account usage because I'm pretty sure all new sprint unlimited plans come with 10gb hotspot so you might be using that up thinking this worked. That's what happened to me lol

If you believe this worked for you, check your sprint account usage because I'm pretty sure all new sprint unlimited plans come with 10gb hotspot so you might be using that up thinking this worked. That's what happened to me lol

I am on an old Sprint Unlimited Plan it has 15 Gig of Mobile Hotspot for $10/mo. It's not activated.

Didn't work for me either. I get a you are not subscribed to hotspot. Are you sure you don't need root access for this?[/QUOTE

There is no root even available for Sprint Note 9 so..... no I am not rooted. That comment makes me wonder if it's not operator error on your part.

I followed the steps and set up the password and poof it works solid
I've had Sprint forever now and am on that old unlimited plan as well so I don't have the 10 gb hotspot a month extra option

Awesome!
Worked perfect for me. Older plan and do not pay for hotspot.
So it seems to only work for people with no hotspot plan then. Can any of you guys with it working enable it and then dial ##33284# and look under active apn connections and see what comes up? You should hide your ip tho if you post a screenshot. Mainly looking at what is under Active APN 1 and 2

With mine turned on and my laptop connected it says "There are no Active APN Connections"
I've been messing around with this for the last couple of days and I figured I would post here everything I have tried and my findings in case someone with more knoledge in this wants to try and figure out a working fix
I had an s8+ previous to this note 9 that had hotspot enable by this two adb shell commands
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_apn "APNDUN,n.ispsn,,,,,,http://mms.sprintpcs.com,68.28.31.7,80,310,120,,default,dun,mms,supl"
while the hotspot is on, I dialed ##DEBUG# and can see TWO separate active APN connections to n.ispsn and I have internet on my phone and my laptop that is connected to the hotspot.
Now on the note 9, I tried those exact commands and got "couldn't connect to APN" followed by hotspot not enabled in account. Looking a bit closer I noticed that through Shortcut Master edit thing, the note 9 only has one APN instead of the two that all other galaxy phones have had to this point. Instead of
Code:
APN2 LTE Internet
&
Code:
APN2 EHRPD Internet
there is now only one called
Code:
APN2 LTE|EHRPD Internet
. This also has x.ispsn instead of n.ispsn like on the previous galaxy devices so it seem the are now using Sprints new APN. I swapped those in the command above and entered this on adb shell
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_apn "APNDUN,x.ispsn,,,,,,http://mms.sprintpcs.com,68.28.31.7,80,310,120,,default,dun,mms,supl"
This allowed me to enable hotspot but after connecting my laptop to it I got no internet. I checked again under ##DEBUG# and Active APN Connections shows just one Active APN to x.ispns. I tried different ways of enabling the hotspot including date off->hotspot on->data on. data off->hotspot on->connect laptop->data on. But still no internet. It seems that the hotspot is not setting up a connection to the APN x.ispns at all which is why I get no internet.
In the mean time, the app EasyTether Pro does work to set up a wired connection to a PC so that's what I'll be using until a fix is found for this. Sorry for long post lol

I am sorry you are having so many problems. Are you on an unlocked version? Mine is Sprint branded bought directly from Sprint. This may be the difference. I came over from the Pixel XL and the steps there involved editing the build.prop file and an ADB command similar to your steps.

Yeah so is mine. I can't think of why it would work with someone but not others. Can you check on shortcut master again to see if you have n.ispsns or x.ispns. Also what plan do you have with sprint

Question Android 12 & VPN Restrictions (L2TP/IPSec PSK)

Work for a local insurance company and because of the COVID restrictions / work from home requirements in place in the UK...
...just noticed that Android 12 now blocks connections to VPN connections setup to use L2TP/IPSec PSK
Whilst its not a massive issue, as the majority of VPN connections are done from Windows and macOS devices, its still a pain in the ass!
A quick google reveals a lot of people are moaning about this, but no clear workarounds to speak of.
Obviously the fix would be to change the authentication requirements on the VPN server side of things, but with a couple of hundred employees working from home, that's a no go!
Anyone managed to find a workaround?

While I usually don't use the company's VPN on my phone (there's no real reason for me to), I feel your pain.
Maybe a VPN application from PlayStore can fix this for you? While this config that you use is the native VPN from the device I believe a custom application can fix this for you.
I use Expressvpn, but that is a paid one, there is also ProtonVpn, and it's free.

These are VPN services not a standalone VPN client
I have run into the Android 12 issue where it doesn't support PPTP or L2PT. Does anyone know of and Android client (Not a VPN service) that I can use to connect to my home Ubiquiti network?

OpenVPN is generally the most secure protocol you can find

is there any solution?
Any solution? I was use VPN L2TP/IPSEC. Some days ago I bought S22 Ultra, thereis IKEv2 only.
Have created L2TP VPN server in my mikrotik router.
any solution for pptp client on Android 12?
Wireguard.
with wireguard i can connect to pptp servers?
i had created a connection L2TP in my android 10 when I bought my phone last year, this year during updates and in Android 12 my L2TP profile is still there and even i can change it to pptp and it works. But when I want add a new VPN it only has IKEv2 protocol.
My phone is Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G
can we add vsomehow some L2tp and Pptp connections with Adb?
Does anyone know if there's a way to change my Unifi VPN settings to work with Android 12?
You can go for surfshark. It is the best and many of my friends use it too. Must try.

I see the same red "update" suggestion, but I can still create an L2TP/IPsec PSK profile and successfully connect. Are you not even able to create and save one?
Mera phone Vivo t1 pro hai aur isme vpn connect nahi ho rha Adar server me
For L2TP there is no solution
For IPSec Xauth PSK you can use VpnCilla client on the playstore
