So I ordered this phone yesterday and I want to try some custom roms on it but I don't know if rooting while on Next would be a safe idea. I'm positive i can root and flash a rom with no problems but if i wanna switch phones in 18 months will I still be able to?
If it just needs to be the way they shipped it, will flashing a stock rom and un-rooting do the trick?
Thank you all in advance, and keep up the great work. Happy rooting. :highfive:
I would assume you would be in the clear as long as you dont trip the Knox counter. It would be a safe bet to un-root it and such when you take it back in to trade for a new phone.

So Froyo is supposed to come out in September.
I'm debating rooting my phone now but keeping the stock rom.
Will there be issues upgrading to Froyo when Samsung makes it available?
Will I have unroot, etc?
Thanks.

Anything we tell you would be a guess...
I guess better questions would be:
Does anyone plan on doing anything special when the update comes out?
Do they expect things to work smoothly?
Do you plan to unroot, upgrade and re-root?
Thanks.
As far as I'm aware, rooting 2.1 on the Galaxy S is as simple as installing a few files which allow you to run things as root, no horrible kernel hacks or such necessary. This means that unrooting is just a matter of deleting those files.
So that, combined with the way that installing 2.2 would wipe the device anyway, means I'm really not worried about installing anything new on a rooted device. It's easy to unroot 2.1 if you want to, anyway.
Hello, i have a few question regarding rooting and unrooting and if i wanted to get the official froyo update would i have to unroot? I am currently completely stock but kind of want to root so i can install nonmarket applications and do the lagfix. Okay so first off if i were to root my phone would the oclf + root be the best way to go? And if i were to unroot would i still have the factory warranty? And also would i still be able to get the froyo update if it ever comes? Haha any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

first and foremost.....no one has any real knowledge of the official FroYo (how its going to be released, how we are going to update, ie; kies or OTA) nor does anyone have any idea when its really going to be released....so that question is impossible to answer truthfully. you will have someone undoubtedly come in here and say you must stay stock and never root and then you will have someone else come in here and say that you can go back to stock and it will let you update, blah blah blah....
why are questions like this asked every few days? READ. SEARCH. all this has been debated before and there is no clear answer. if you dont like it, go get an iphone.
rooting is technically voiding the warranty, but if you can get back to stock it doesnt matter.
Been a long time iPhone user and have been really curious about Android. Then I came across a deal for a refurb SGHi987 for $199 and the time and price was right so I picked one up. I can jailbreak iOS with my eyes closed but am a complete noob when it comes to android.
A few questions.
1. What is the best tool to root?
2. Can rooting be undone in case I want to exercise my warranty?
3. Flashing custom ROM such as Overcome ROM v2.0.0 BETA 2, will I be able to revert back to AT&T's original firmware?
in my opinion, rooting can be undone if you backed up your tab before doing something screwy with it. not sure though if it would work. never tried it myself.
Superoneclick using the rageagainstthecage option has a root and unroot process that many reported success with on some na p1000 tabs.
It seems getting back to stock after flashing can be easy, complicated or impossible,
depends on if you have a proper backup of your original tab, the stock rom, etc.
Rotobackup would backup and recover basic flashes but I dont think he is making roto roms anymore. The newer roms and kernals seem more complex.
Im interested in reading replies here as well about clockwork etc.

Hello, first off, I'm new to the android OS, especially flashing ROMs. I did however have some prior experience in flashing other mobiles such as the Symbian platform on my previous Nokia phones.
I would like to try the new Firmware XXLA1 as of now Im using an OTA update kernel version of 2.6.35.7-N7000DXKL3[email protected]#2.
Btw, im from the Philippines and I bought this handset on this country.
So going back to my question, what are the repercussions and implications if I flash the LA1 official ROM from Samsung knowing that its a ROM for "Open Europe"?
if your phone is unlocked (No carrier restriction) you can flash any Stock ROM
Yes, i bought it unlocked. Will the app availability in the market change?
Also, since its an official ROM, would it break my warranty?
I Live in Indonesia, yes samsung Indonesia say it will break our warranty but you can flash it back to KL3 whenever you want to claim it..
Bump. I would also like to know of any important differences between stock roms if any. I live in the US and will be getting my Note in the next day or so and think I will root it but keep it stock and just uninstall any bloatware I deem unnecessary.
I recommend using it for a week before you try any (potentially) warranty breaking mods on it. Get used to it. learn how things work. Then when you start modding you will have a far better idea if the mod has broken something or not.
You can generally flash a ROM from any region, as long as you understand the language. You can flash RADIO seperately, and you would choose one that will work well with your local provider. Lastly, you can manually set the APN settings to lock onto your chosen provider.
Be aware that some new devices have a "binary counter" which will sometimes increase when you flash something. Your warranty may be affected. Spend time reading the forums learning about the issues before you flash.
Thanks! Sounds like a plan

Looking at the kernel version you have, it is safe to assume that we possess the same unit, and yes we have the same roots (oy, kapatid!) as well.
I started rooting my unit after a few weeks of getting familiar with it. Don't worry too much, since i was able to successfully flash root my unit and install CWM (clockworkmod), using the zergrush exploit.
Once CWM was installed, the 1st thing i did was a nandroid backup, just to keep a backup on my stock settings.
After that, i tried flashing custom ROMs, and it worked flawlessly, albeit with bugs. Just follow the steps outlined on each ROM thread and you should do fine.
Managed to encounter boot loops, phone not booting up, etc., but nothing too critical that made my unit useless.
As for your question, the obvious implication is that by flashing custom ROMs, you void your warranty. So, unless you have qualms in losing your warranty, then go ahead and flash a custom ROM.
Hi there, was curious is there's a downgrade path that could take me back to a root-able build?
I know I can't go back to the point of loading a custom rom again, but I would just love to have some ability to debloat my phone. Been running terrible.
Thanks!
I would like to know the same thing?
I used to be a FLASH-aholic, but after moving to Sprint S7E a few years ago I sadly lost that hobby, thus locked boot-loaders...
My kid has a ATT s5 and is begging to install a custom ROM... But its been upgraded to QC1, So could someone confirm that there has been no exploit to revert back?
I tried a few threads directions, flashed a ROM, and got a notice to return the phone to ATT on boot.....
Am I beating a dead horse trying to FLASH?
