Could this be ported to work on the gear? - Samsung Galaxy Gear

I came to this form for the exact question. It does look like android wear is just Google now.

As soon as I heard about it the first thing I did was to search if anyone had given it consideration.
I just ordered a Gear for the Modding ability (and one to sell) and this would be very cool.

Seeing as how they are aready planning on releasing the SDK to developers, I dont see why this wouldn't be possible. Google wants this on as many devices as they can get to expand the ecosystem of custom apps, to include thier own AWD Google Play.

I would love to try this out. I love the gear with null but would be awesome

This would be awesome

Alright, well first this is running Android 4.4.2 not 4.2.2 like the gear. If that issue was gone it would be possible.
I already have the "watchface" app running on a Nexus 5. http://i.imgur.com/waaU8Y1.png
Other than the API issue it seems like it would be fairly easy.

Would it be classed as aosp?

This I am interested in, is there enough source and resources to port Android Wear to the Galaxy Gear and bring it up to 4.4.2?

Hope so But doesn't that depend on whether they release a sort of Nexus watch too?
Btw Google announced that they are working with Samsung too. Makes you wonder why Samsung is also releasing a Tizen Watch...

Well it are two different ecosystems in this case. If they knew about this new Android ecosystem they must have realized that they were going to compete with a pretty large ecosystem in the end. I truly doubt that Tizen is going to get much developers love now.

I kinda agree, Tizen was primarily developed as a contingency plan agaist Google.
As you make know, Google and Samsung had a big squabble that now seems to have smoothed out with them coming to agreements on market territory related to patented manufacturing technologies and licensings. This all came to head with Google agreeing to sell off Motorola and loosing a ton of money in the process.
I cant imagine a 100% Touchwiz smartphone running Tizen but that was the worst case scenario plan, if Google and Samsung temporarily parted ways. I think Samsung is just sticking a toe in the water with Tizen since they already spent the money developing it and if successful, can be rolled out on cheaper tablets and handsets likely destined for emerging markets.

I thought, maybe the Android Wear "os" isn't really a specialized firmware, but just a core android os + a "Google Now watch launcher".
Like the new launcher on Nexus Smartphones, that first was Google Experience Launcher on Nexus 5, then become Google Now Launcher for all Nexus.
Maybe we just need to retrieve the launcher apk and install it on Gear, and then run it as any other launcher, as we can still run "Touchwiz Home" with Null_Rom on Gear ?

Gonna see what this looks like on the gear.

It's cause the gear is running API 17 (4.2.2) while this has a minimum API of 19 (4.4.2).
The app, for example, runs perfectly fine, even unedited, on a phone running 4.4.2 (nexus 5 for me).

A Fine OS Google... a Fine OS

Amidst all the threads with 4.2 bashing and complaining and websites calling 4.2 the worst since Honeycomb, I wanted to just say that 4.2 is the best version of the OS to date. I've been sole on Android since 2009 with the Droid release and had experience since eclair. A major gripe I've always had with Android is that regular reboots were required to keep the system running efficiently. Custom Roms were required to have good features. But Android has matured to the point of greatness.
I have a De-Odexed version of 4.2 with not one reboot in over 100 hours on my Nexus 7 and Ive been draining the battery to at least 10% each day. (I use it a lot Lol). This is something I would never have been able to do on any other version of the OS. It is fast, stable and very efficient.
Way to go Google... Can't wait for the next one
Don't worry, it's always the same handful of whingers. Besides them, there are millions of satisfied owners...
If there were a company in the market who had changed their business model from innovation to litigation,
and they had more cash than any other company on earth,
you would think they might be spending some of that cash throwing up FUD for their competitors.
No one says they have to play fair.
Same here, really like and enjoy 4.2.
Of course there's a couple of bugs, esp. with new features, but that's nothing unusual and they will be fixed.
On another note: would you mind telling me how and what you used to deodex 4.2?
Wanna mess around again the ROM but the tools I got barely worked on 4.0 so can't even think of using them on 4.1 or even 4.2.... :-/
Appreciated

Whingers you say, funnily enough in the years I've been on XDA I've not come across as many people complaining about an Android update as I have about 4.2 but if you say everyone one of these people are *whingers* then it must be true eh

I just prefer 4.1.2. I just haven't been whining about it all over the forum.
The only feature that I actually used on 4.2 was the keyboard. So I downgraded back to 4.1.2 and just flashed the keyboard. And 4.1.2 performs better on my device.

I love it. Chrome seems light years faster.
As much as I would love to give my thanks to google for this update I can not. I've been using android since cupcake and one of the biggest fans. Eleven different devices running android over the years. I am always one of the lucky ones and don't have the issues others complain about, untill now.
I've had my n7 since launch and it is the only android I never bothered to root as it was perfect from the start and I had little use for my rooted apps. After the ota I had constant hot reboots and a somewhat flawed ui (not that's a real complaint as much of that was supposed to happen) not to mention worse battery life and slower charges.
I was forced to root, and am happy I did, alrdeay running three different custom roms and pretty impresses, much more so than googles official 4.2 update
This is the first time that in my opinon the update was worse than the previous.
So I guess I like it as it finally made me root my n7!

I quite like 4.2 the only thing I would like added is a restart option on the power button. Have had some random reboots but its nothing major for me and as apps get updated they are getting less frequent.
I don't think I have ever bashed a release version in over 3 years of solely using droid os.
Cursed a few custom ROMs tho

Did you perform a full wipe after updating to 4.2. If not it might have been some incompatible apps making your n7 do the reboots and other things. By the way do you have an 8 or 16 GB n7? I have 16, and haven't had a single problem after updating.

I dont feel like saying thanks google because its their job. and on one side am happy on the other i wait for 4.2.1 to fix all the bugs ..so its balanced
I haven't had an issue with performance at all did a clean install from a image and been great.
The only thing that I find useless are the " quick settings" cause they are not quick making a five step process into a four step process is not quick

A full wipe doesn't help. I did one before installing 4.2. I haven't had a reboot since I uninstalled HD Widgets, but it hasn't been that long. It may not be causing the problem, but it certainly does seem to make the problem come to the forefront.
Well I have noticed that HD widgets are fine until you use a lock screen widget then all hell breaks loose.

Google "X" Tablet

According to this article, Google is working on an X phone to compete againist Apple and Samsung, that will be released next year. And, also is working on an X tablet with a significant marketing budget. Looks like I'll have to hold off on the nexus 10. I doubt they will keep that name but I wouldn't mind owning an X tablet.

More like "quickest at shoveling a crappy update out the door". Take any Samsung update for a major Android OS, and add at LEAST 3-6 months before it's even remotely stable.
ICS on the I9100 was an utter and total ****fest of epic proportions... It didn't stop being a ****fest until many other manufacturers started deploying ICS.

Miracast ? That should work via DLNA right ? Sony's mirroring doesn't !
Sony's Miracast works exactly like Google's. DLNA doesn't do live streaming, it only streams existing files.
There is almost nothing new in 4.2 for Xperia users, Sony did the most important things before Google even announced them.

I wouldn't cry too much to get Android 4.2.1 or 4.2.2 because that bug ridden piece of junk introduces bugs of it's own, including the infamous and absolutely infuriating Wifi bug where Wifi stops working when you turn the screen off and notifications for GMAIL WHATSAPP etc stop working until you turn the screen back on.
No fix in sight for that either, it's the main reason I ditched my Nexus 4.

Well of course "apple are the best". They never even let you know a new OS is coming so why would you say they are slow, right? Plus they give you features that other phones had for years then put an advertising spin on it that make you so "happy" you finally got a feature others have had for years.

Apps (or lack of)

Are any fellow Gear users slightly disappointed by the lack of new apps appearing in the official Samsung store? Like, I'd love a Spotify app that showed the name of the track/album art etc...

Considering how powerful the hardware is, Sammy should be really pushing this with an SDK. Unless they are planning to load the gear up with missile blasting codes, they should cut the secrecy and get everyone to start developing, or hang around while iWatch or Pebble 2 or Google Watch or whatever comes and takes away the advantage.
